6 2006 utah outlook Utah head coach Greg Marsden s approach to the coming season did a complete flip in a span of six months... Ashley Postell won All-America honors on every event and in the all-around as a freshman in WATCH FOR THESE UTES AND MORE IN 2006 ALL-AROUND Ashley Postell Nicolle Ford Kristina Baskett Nina Kim First-team All-American could win it all after placing third last year as a freshman second-team All-American has first-team potential. VAULT Ashley Postell First-team All-American as a freshman in Kristina Baskett Freshman was the 2005 USA J.O. champion. BARS Ashley Postell Rachel Tidd Nicolle Ford Nina Kim BEAM Ashley Postell Nicolle Ford Kristen Riffanacht Nina Kim Tied for third at the 2005 NCAA Championships. First-team All-American in 2005; 2002 World Champion 2004 first-team All-American suffered rare mistake at last year s NCAA s second-team All-American is rock solid. Freshman was the 2004 American Classic champ. FLOOR Ashley Postell Second-team All-American as a freshman in Gritt Hofmann First-team All-American in Nicolle Ford This should be her year to make NCAA event finals. Kristina Baskett Freshman was the 2005 USA J.O. champion. but his goal remains unchanged: To extend the nation s longest-string of NCAA Gymnastics Championship appearances and to contend for the national title. With all but one contributing gymnast returning from last year s NCAA bronze medallist team, and an impressive freshman recruiting class, a fast start and strong finish seemed inevitable. But then injuries began striking his returning All-Americans and Marsden s strategy changed. I think we ll be a good team at the beginning of the season, but have the potential to be a great team by the end, says Marsden. Getting back to the top three last year was important, but now we d like to take that up a couple of notches. Of course we ll miss (graduated All-American) Annabeth Eberle, who was one of the best college gymnasts in the country, but we anticipated her loss. What we didn t anticipate was losing Rachel Tidd, who has been unable to train since the (2005) NCAA Championships due to a back injury. He also didn t plan on losing over a month of training time for sophomore Ashley Postell, a five-time All-American as a freshman last year, who injured her elbow in mid-november and won t resume full training until after Christmas. Nor was the high ankle sprain to senior All-American Kristen Riffanacht one that could keep her out of the first couple of meets in his calculations. The injuries to our returners puts a lot of pressure on our freshmen, says Marsden. I am confident that they are capable of making huge contributions this year, and ultimately will do so, but I just can t predict that will happen from day one. As they get comfortable competing in the college environment, and once Ashley and Kristen are healthy, we ll become a better team. The Utes will have plenty of opportunity to prepare for what will face them should they qualify for a record 25thconsecutive NCAA Championship (31ststraight national championship). Ten of Utah s 2006 opponents were ranked in the preseason top 25, including No. 1 ranked and defending NCAA champion Georgia, which visits the Huntsman Center on Mar. 6. The Utes, voted No. 2 in the preseason poll, will open their season at No. 3 UCLA on Jan. 7. Their first home meet is on Jan. 20 against No. 8 Nebraska. Utah s other ranked opponents are No. 5 Michigan, No. 6 Florida, No. 13 Oregon State, No. 14 Arizona State, No. 18 Washington, No. 19 Brigham Young and No. 24 Minnesota. Here s a look at the 2006 Utes: Freshman Kristina Baskett (Normandy Park, Wash.), the 2005 USA Junior Olympic champion in the allaround, floor exercise and vault, appears custom-fit for the Utes and their famous home crowds. Powerful and artistic, she loves to perform. I think Kristina will be one of the new stars coming into NCAA gymnastics this year and could contend for the all-around title, says Marsden. She does not have a weak event and is an especially strong tumbler and vaulter. While she accomplished a lot in her USA Gymnastics career, I think that may pale in comparison to what Kristina could potentially do in college. Senior Dominique D Oliveira (Johannesburg, South Africa) led off Utah s set her first two years before time national champion
7 2006 utah outlook losing her spot last season. Marsden blames her fall on flagging interest, rather than a lack of talent, and sees a different D Oliveira in the gym these days. I think Dominique s struggles as a junior were because she was a little burned out on the sport. She seems much more enthused this year and has worked hard to make herself competitive on s, beam and floor. She could help us significantly with our depth and consistency. It took Jessica Duke (Sandy, Utah) nearly a month to break into the lineup as a freshman in 2005 a scenario she won t repeat. After going the entire season without a fall on her two events (vault and s), Duke s dependability and power could translate into more floor time this year. Jessica has an incredible work ethic and she gained a lot of confidence last season, says Marsden. She s had a remarkable preseason I think Jess is our most improved athlete and she will be in contention for a starting spot on all four events. Junior co-captain Nicolle Ford (Binghamton, N.Y.) owns four All-America citations from her first two seasons, but has her sights set higher. A rare fall on beam (one of just two falls all season) in the first round of last April s NCAA Championships cost her a shot at the allaround championship and did not sit well with the gymnast dubbed the Queen by her teammates. An angry Ford bounced back the next night and posted the highest beam score of the Super Six and a all-around mark. Queenie is a fierce competitor, extremely dependable and a beautiful gymnast to watch, says Marsden. She was slowed some by an ankle injury in the preseason, but still began upgrading all of her routines. Without question, Nicolle is one of our team leaders, on and off the floor. As exceptional as her first two seasons were, I think her best is still ahead, he adds. Gritt Hofmann (Berlin, Germany) thought her floor exercise routine during event finals at the NCAA Championships was the last of her career. So when the NCAA granted her a one-year medical extension (a back injury ended her freshman campaign early), she ed at the chance for a second senior season. At Junior four-time All-American and team co-captain Nicolle Ford ranks among the nation s best all-arounders. age 25, ancient for a gymnast, Hofmann plans to not only add to her All-America portfolio on the floor, but to earn a fulltime post on vault and beam. Just when I thought she d given us everything she had, Gritt came back ready to do even more for the team this season, says Marsden. Her floor routine has been a crowd favorite for years and she seems more confident and comfortable on vault and beam. I think getting another chance to compete really lit a fire under Gritt. Gritt Hofmann won All-America honors on the floor in 2005 and then received an extension from the NCAA. Nina Kim (Houston, Texas), a fouryear USA National Team member with a world-class reputation, nonetheless enters her freshman year as a bit of an unknown. That s because Kim took last season off reintroducing herself to the sport when she came to campus in late August. She ll introduce herself to the all-around field at the NCAA Championships if all goes as planned. Nina has the most international experience of our freshmen, however I was concerned since she didn t compete last year, says Marsden. I have been pleasantly surprised with how quickly she s been able to work her way back. I think she ll make a big contribution right from the beginning, but this is definitely someone who will get stronger as the season progresses. Sophomore Katie Kivisto (Boca Raton, Fla.) was phenomenal as Utah s leadoff competitor on s last season and filled an alternate role on beam and floor. Her steady work played a huge role, particularly at the NCAA Championships, where she was Utah s very first competitor in both team qualifying competition and in the Super Six. Ute fans hope she makes the beam lineup this year, where she performs the wildly popular Kivisto move. Katie became invaluable to us last year in her leadoff position on s, remarks Marsden. She also demonstrated her ability on beam and floor, but our depth on those two events didn t allow 10-time national champion 17
8 2006 utah outlook her a consistent opportunity to compete. We ll need those contributions this year and she seems prepared for the added responsibility. Senior Natalie Nicoloff (Hermitage, Pa.) lost her leadoff spot on the balance beam last year after injuring her elbow. She hopes to not only regain a starting job on the event where she s gone without a fall in her last 18 competitions but to also crack the lineup on s. Says Marsden, Last year, Natalie was held back by an untimely elbow injury. She worked very hard in the off-season and came back better prepared than ever before. She looks especially good on beam and s and has a great chance to make the lineup on both of those events. Gabriella Onodi (Budapest, Hungary) seemed to come out of nowhere as a junior last year to become one of the best leadoff beam workers in the nation. She also made an impact on the vault and floor lineups and showed none of the inconsistency that characterized her sophomore season. Gabi was our most improved athlete last year and seems determined to continue that process, says Marsden. She is capable of competing on all four events. Her vaulting is greatly improved and we are also excited about her new floor routine. As expected, 2002 World Balance Beam champion and seven-year USA National Team member Ashley Postell took the collegiate gymnastics world by storm as a freshman last year. She won the all-around in the opening session of the NCAA Championships and finished third overall after the higher-scoring evening session was figured in. She also earned All-America honors on every apparatus and qualified for individual event finals on the vault, s and beam. Unfortunately, a foot injury suffered during warm-ups for team finals forced her to withdraw from the individual event championships, with the exception of s, where she placed third. Extremely consistent, Postell went 43 routines before her first miss, and led the team with 23 victories. Ashley Postell had just an incredible freshman season and the only disappointment was her heel injury in team finals, says Marsden. I know her expectation is to compete for an NCAA championship on every event and she possesses the skills, drive, poise and personality to do just that. She is one determined, talented young woman. Overachieving senior All-American and co-captain Kristen Riffanacht (Cheshire, Conn.) entrenched herself in the beam and floor lineups a year ago despite hamstring and shoulder injuries. Senior All-American and co-captain Kristen Riffanacht has her eye on an all-around berth this season. She spent the preseason readying herself for an all-around position this season, only to suffer a high ankle sprain on Nov. 30 that will take weeks to heal. Fortunately for Utah, Riffanacht s competitive input is only a part of the equation. Kristen is such an important part of our team, not only in terms of what she does for us in meets, but also because she is the glue that holds everyone together, praises Marsden. No one works harder than Riffy and she quietly works behind the scenes to keep a cohesive team atmosphere. She never fully receives the recognition she deserves. Especially with this young team, Kristen s experience and leadership are invaluable. Freshman Beth Rizzo (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) walked on to the Ute team in hopes of eventually competing for a national championship contender. Eventually changed to now when injuries hit the team. Rizzo s response has been positive and her strengths include some nice skills (when she becomes more consistent in practice, she ll open her floor routine with a double layout). Beth has been a very pleasant surprise, says Marsden. As a walk-on, I wasn t initially convinced she would be able to help our team, but she has done a great job showing me that she can. Beth has put herself in a position to compete for a spot on vault, beam and floor. Coming off a sophomore season that saw her win All-America honors in the all-around and on s and vault, the sky was the limit for Rachel Tidd (Fallbrook, Calif.). But since tying for third on the uneven s (with teammate Postell) on the final night of the NCAA Championships last April, Tidd has been unable to do gymnastics, or much of any physical activity, due to back problems. After considering retiring from the sport, she decided to hold off in hopes that her back might improve enough to return to the team. With the season approaching, I m not especially optimistic about Rachel, but if she can compete on even one event, her contribution would be extremely valuable, says Marsden. If she is able to return, it will likely be on s, where she challenged for a national title last year. No doubt, she would really strengthen our lineup time national champion
