6 utah gymnastics 2010 season preview Six-time senior All-American Daria Bijak, a 2008 German Olympian, will vie for NCAA all-around honors. After losing two phenomenal senior leaders to graduation, the first offseason assignment for the 2010 Ute gymnasts was to transition from followers to leaders. They needed to look no farther than their own coaching staff for guidance. In July, longtime Ute associate coach Megan Marsden was appointed co-head coach with husband Greg Marsden giving a formal title to a professional relationship forged over a quarter of a century ago. Says Greg Marsden, who has coached the program since its inception, about Megan s promotion: This has been a partnership for many years and this was the next logical step. In many ways, Megan is the face of this program. Both Marsdens hope that the role adjustment for their gymnasts is equally as seamless. It is impossible to replace Kristina Baskett and Nina Kim, both with regard to their gymnastics and their leadership style, admit the Marsdens. However, we have a very strong senior class that has learned under Kristina and Nina for the past three years. This team has a different personality, but it is capable of being just as competitive. That statement says a lot, since Utah has been one of the dominant teams in the land during the tenure of its current senior class, which has earned two NCAA team runner-up finishes and a bronze. Junior All-American Kyndal Robarts. The departure of 12-time All-American and NCAA uneven bar champion Baskett, and fellow All-American Kim, opened eight positions in the lineup. Senior Annie DiLuzio, and juniors Gael Mackie and Kyndal Robarts, hope to claim five of those vacancies by earning all-around positions. DiLuzio and Mackie were full-time starters on two events a year ago, while Robarts competed on three events. If successful, they will join returning all-around seniors Daria Bijak (a two-time All-America all-arounder) and Jamie Deetscreek (the school record-holder for the mostconsecutive hit routines). Back from an ankle injury is All-America floor specialist Beth Rizzo. Sophomore Stephanie McAllister, a starter on bars last year, is prepared for increased duties. A freshman with high expectations is senior international elite Katelyn Mohr, who will vie for an all-around spot once she is fully recovered from a pre-existing back condition. The usual difficult schedule awaits the 2010 Utes, who will meet perennial NCAA Championships qualifiers UCLA, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon State, Iowa State and Penn State, among others. The Utes open their campaign on Jan. 9 at UCLA and follow with back-to-back home meets against Iowa State and Georgia on Jan. 15 and Jan. 22. Returning to the Huntsman Center after a four-year absence is the NCAA Regional Championship on April 10. Here s what to look for from the 2010 Utes: Ute Seniors The entire four-member senior class has won All-America honors, led by six-time All-American Daria Bijak. Combining for three All-America awards are Jamie Deetscreek, Annie DiLuzio and Beth Rizzo. Bijak (Cologne, Germany), who competed in the Beijing Olympics in August of 2008, concluded a packed gymnastics schedule last April by winning All-America honors in the all-around, floor and bars at the NCAA Championships. Bijak s powerful leaps and tumbling, combined with her unusual skills and high degree of difficulty, set her apart at virtually every level of the sport. Daria finally had a summer off from doing gymnastics, which was great for her body. She comes into the season probably as healthy as she s ever been, say the Marsdens. Daria had a great preseason and should definitely be a contender in the all-around at nationals. Deetscreek (Hatboro, Pa.), Utah s 2009 Most Improved Gymnast, has made one of the most dramatic transformations ever by a Ute gymnast. A role player-turned All-American, she set the school record for most consecutive routines without a fall (64), while competing in the all-around in every meet as a junior t i m e n a t i o n a l c h a m p i o n s
7 Jamie is developing into a leader and has really taken the freshmen under her wing. We expect another good year out of Jamie on the competition floor and her emergence as a leader will help the team as well, say the Marsdens. DiLuzio (Folsom, Calif.) hopes to add all-arounder to her title in her final season. The 2007 NCAA vault runner-up is a 9.95 scorer on vault and floor, and also has considerable experience competing on the beam. Hard work on upgrades in the offseason could be her ticket to a spot in the bar lineup in Annie has really committed to make this her best year, the Marsdens assert. She is determined to conquer her fear of the uneven bars in order to become an allarounder this year. Rizzo (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) is back in the mix on vault and floor after recovering from the ankle injury that sidelined her last season. Her best event is the floor, where she won first-team All-America accolades in Beth had a really frustrating year last year, but seems in a much better place now, say the Marsdens. She is driven to re-establish herself as a contributor on this team. Ute Juniors Jacquelyn Jacq Johnson (West Chester, Ohio), an alternate a year ago, is working on a promotion. She laid the groundwork for a starting job by showing poise under pressure at the NCAA Regional utah gymnastics 2010 season preview a year ago, when she nailed her first-ever college bar set as a lastminute replacement. Jacq was having her best preseason until an appendectomy slowed her progress, relay the Marsdens. We are hoping she ll be ready at the start of the season, but she will definitely contribute as the season goes on. All indications point to Gael Mackie (Vancouver, B.C.) living up to the hype she enjoyed as a 2004 Canadian Olympian. Mackie s intense approach to her offseason preparation, combined with high marks in difficulty and execution, could land her a spot in the allaround lineup and on the NCAA podium. Gael gets better every year, and if her preseason is any indication, that trend should continue. We need her to fill some big shoes and I think she is ready to do that, say her coaches. Nationally competitive on vault, beam and floor, Kyndal Robarts (San Marcos, Texas) wants a shot on bars now that she Senior All-American Annie DiLuzio wants to finish her career as an all-arounder. Senior All-Ameican Jamie Deetscreek has become a team leader. has recovered from a shoulder injury. She competes deep in the lineup on vault and floor, but her high scores on beam come from the lead-off position, where she may be the best in the nation. After a shoulder injury limited her to three events last year, Kyndal has come back even more determined to return to the all-around lineup, say the Marsdens. A brand new bar routine should allow her to do that. She is one of the most dependable athletes on the team. Ute Sophomores Cortni Beers (Tulsa, Okla.) has the makings of a great college gymnast if she can regain the skill set that earned her a spot on the U.S. National Team. She has had her fill of watching others perform and has been training with a vengeance. Cortni is heading in the right direction and did a great job in the preseason, especially bars and beam, say the coaches. She will definitely play an important role for us on those two events as she continues to move closer to her potential. Stephanie McAllister (Indianapolis, Ind.) made the starting lineup in every meet as a freshman last year and established w w w. u t a h u t e s. c o m 19
8 utah gymnastics 2010 season preview Sophomore Stephanie McAllister. herself as a steady scorer. Floor and bars are her best events, and she performs her signature McAllister move on the latter. Stephanie really could have competed more for us last year except there was so much experience ahead of her in the lineup. This is someone whose going to a long way to replacing Kristina and Nina s scores, the Marsdens predict. Ute Freshmen A late addition who wants to help out early is Fumina Kobayashi (Salt Lake City). She initially planned to walk on to the team next fall, but instead moved her high school graduation date up a semester and accepted a scholarship that will start in January. I think our fans will really enjoy having a local gymnast on our team again. Since she is joining us at the semester, we re not sure what to expect, but she will definitely help us with depth on some events, say the coaches. Katelyn Mohr (Carmichael, Calif.), a senior international elite and three-time USA National Championships qualifier, is an athletic gymnast with great technique. Like former club teammate and current Ute senior Annie DiLuzio, Mohr s best events are vault and floor. Kate came in with two stress fractures in her back so she has been pretty limited in the preseason. However, she is exceptionally talented, and with very little training, she already seems ready to make huge contributions. This is someone who An Insider s Guide to the Utes All-Around Daria Bijak...
