President s Page Fellow Members, This month, we welcome onto the General Committee, Sabrina Kee-Kitney and Shyam Nainani who have been elected as the Hockey and Football Representatives respectively, by their sport sections. A reminder about certain car park bye-laws was included in last month s magazine and Members should be aware that action is now being taken against a very small number who continually and flagrantly abuse the rules. Unfortunately, this is also seen in a number of other areas of the Club and, again, Members will be reminded of the relevant Club bye-laws following which, more concrete action will be taken if the problem persists. Please remember that the bye-laws are for the benefit of all Members and your cooperation in abiding by these, is requested. Meanwhile, the Constitution Committee continues to work on revising and updating the current set of bye-laws. As a means of obtaining feedback on the Club, particularly regarding our facilities and programmes, the General Committee will be inviting all recently joined Members to meet them to hear their views. At the same time, all other Members and Subscribers are encouraged to let the General Committee or the Management team have their feedback on any aspect of the Club. Finally, the Club will be holding its Centenary Children s Sports Day on 1 January 2014 yes, 100 years of Members crawling out of bed on New Year's Day and coming to the Club at lunchtime often for a bloody mary! KCC intends to make this a very special event and an organising committee, led by former President, Mike Kennedy, is already hard at work. If you would like to help by donating your time, money (either for general sponsorship or to sponsor a particular event or side-show on the day) or company products as prizes that would be most welcome and would be acknowledged by the Club and in the event programme. Please contact me, Mike Kennedy or the General Manager if you can assist. Enjoy your Club! Robin Gill 4

GM s Column Dear Members, What an incredible wet summer we have experienced in May and June! Do you remember the Black Rain warning that occurred on 22 May? We record the rainfall here at KCC and in those 24 hours on 22 May we recorded 289 mm of rain. That s right, in 24 hours! The rainfall total in the month of May was an incredible 558mm now that s a lot of water! While I m on the topic of rain, it is a good time to remind all Members of the Club policy during Typhoon and Thunderstorm. Typhoon and Thunderstorm policy Members are advised to follow the instructions from the pool guards in regards to either Thunderstorm or Typhoon warnings. The guards are acting on instructions from me to clear the pool and not allow anyone back into the pool until it s safe to do so. This also applies to the grounds as well. Please remember, this is for your own safety. Live Music in the Bar By Members' request we have decided to continue with the every other Friday Night entertainment at the Bar! The response from you the Members has been overwhelmingly in favour of continuing with the entertainment. We will be providing you with different themes of entertainment on the Fridays that they play in the Bar. So mark your calendars for 5 and 19 July and come down to the Bar and sing and dance along. Reservation in the Grill Room and Chinese Restaurant Members, please note that the policy on holding a reserved table has changed. The Club will hold a table that is reserved for only 15 minutes past the time of the reservation. We have found that there are times when Members reserve a table but do not show up and there are other Members who are waiting for a table are hence denied access to that outlet. Speaking of food and beverage Dim Sum now the last Wednesday of each month As reported before, we have secured the services of a Dim Sum chef who will be preparing a delicious Dim Sum buffet lunch on the last Wednesday of every month. We will remind you all in the usual ways so you won t have to remember! 70s Night! Remember, last year we held a very successful 60s night? Well, the time has come to hold the next one the 70s are rolling into KCC on Saturday, 27 July. Mark this date on your social calendar and get ready to boogie on down to KCC for a fun evening reminiscing to Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd! Celtic Connection I am pleased to report that we have arranged for a choir named the Celtic Connection to perform in the Coffee Shop on Saturday, 5 October. The format will be dinner followed by a one-to-one in a half-hour programme on Celtic/Irish music. There will be approximately 25 members of this choir performing so please make a note of this date as this will be a very unique opportunity to experience the wonderful sounds of Celtic/Irish music. More details will be announced in WOK and my column closer to the date. Towels We have implemented a new bath mat in the men s and ladies' changing rooms. These bath mats are obviously to be used to stand on outside the shower. Please do not use a bath towel for this purpose. Our staff will be asked to report any Members who use a bath towel as a bath mat. Also, note that the towels are to remain inside the changing rooms at the main clubhouse and inside the pool complex and not brought outside onto the grounds. Please follow the staff s instructions in this regard. Let s hope that July and August are hot and dry which will entice you to come down to the Club and jump into the refreshing water at the pool and you can enjoy our new food menu and summer special drinks as well! Enjoy the summer! Greg Hartigan, CCM General Manager Comments are always welcome. Please send your comments to comments@kcc.org.hk 5

Youth Cup 9-a-side Tournament KCC Youth Cup Champion 2012/13 Congratulations to the 14 boys: Jasper (Team Captain), Leslie (GK), Philip, Michael, Felix, Darius, George, Abhishek, Ben, Henry, Rohit, Curtis, Jeremy and Joshua. Mini and Youth End of Season Party and Prize Presentation 25 May saw the annual mini and youth prize presentation, a chance to reward star performers and performances of our future KCC hockey stars. The event was well supported, with parents, adult KCC players and coaches all present. The awards ceremony was accompanied by a buffet dinner and followed by bowling for the older youth and a movie for the youngsters. The boys youth team all went to bed early in preparation for the youth team cup final, played the following day (which of course they won!). To end this season, for me being the mini s convenor, I do indeed want to thank Virginia Fung and Helena Heung as this is the busiest season in mini hockey history with eight tournaments in 10 months, some even with only 10 days notice. They handled everything without pain. Thanks also go to my team of ladies, Carmen Wong, Mabel Lin, Shirley Leung and Jocylyn Khan, who worked tirelessly throughout the season during difficult circumstances. It is of course always an honour and privilege for me to address KCC but it is especially true in the circumstances of the current season. To see how selflessly and creatively the committee members dealt with the challenges of various issues, should make all of you proud to be associated with this remarkable Club. Great effort and commitment of the boys, the coaches and THANK YOU to the parents who allowed the boys to play during the exam study period all the way from the preliminary rounds, through to the tough play in the semifinals and the final. The 1-0 victory against Shaheen ended the season on a high note. Shirley McNeil Mini and Youth Convenor 10

The KCC Hockey Ball 4 May 2013 at the Coffee Shop The Winter Season ended perfectly with a night to remember at the KCC Hockey Section Masquerade ball. Sunday, 5 May proved to be a day of rest and recovery for most who were at the ball on 4 May. As always, the Club provided a great venue, decorated perfectly to the theme, and amazing food, and more importantly to many, drinks! We were delighted to have the company of President Robin Gill and his wife Gayle Gill on the evening as well as many KCC Members who usually are not part of the hockey section but fitted right in on the evening. Two of the KCC bands provided the music, but the real entertainment was watching the men s and women s KCC teams on the AstroTurf trying their hands on singing and dancing. The women s B team were already quite the centre of attention after all of them turned up in matching Marge Simpson masks tonight and Hey there Kristy, what you doing on the left, You should be on the right, and Leigh lightning, go leigh lightning were just some of the lyrics involved... No KCC ball would not have been complete without a boat race, and this was surprisingly encouraged by Kelson Wong. The race saw the men s A team going head to head with the women s A team. Obviously this was an easy win from the ladies, although recognition should be given to Jackie Chan for his sterling effort. All this narrated by our great MCs for the evening Phil Smyth and Sam Bieske. The evening proved a treat that was well deserved by the KCC hockey section but would not have been possible without the generosity of Kelson Wong of Sports Depot and Arshad Mahmood of Punjab House for their raffle prizes, the amazing work of the Hockey Ball Committee comprising of many players from the men s and women s section, and of course the staff at KCC. Looking forward to many more balls to come! Gabby Kitney Women s Convenor courtesy of Sabrina Kee-Kitney. They partnered with the women s C team for a short song written about the KCC hockey section. This singing was then followed by the men s D team taking over, especifically Carl Modder who decided to entertain the Coffee Shop crowd by trying to balance a hockey stick on his finger for 30 seconds or down a pitcher of beer, predictably ending with Carl quite impressively consuming the pitcher in record time. The next act made it imperatively clear that the women s A team should stick to hockey as they tried their hand at song writing and then singing. Tell me Ahmed how many people did you dribble 11

FOOTBALL Football Section Committee In with the New Guard The management of the KCC Football Section has a new and very cosmopolitan look about it with the retirement of stalwart Tony Smith from active duty and Andrew Lordy Laxton, Dharam Mirpuri and Chris Pickles stepping down from their posts as Football Section Convenor, KCC Knights Manager and Tours and Events Manager respectively to make way for new blood. At the section AGM on 7 June, Shyam Nainani was duly elected as the new Convenor, and just to make sure that he has enough to do to keep himself occupied, he will remain the Manager of the KCC Dragons for another season. The financial world was rocked when Smithee finally stood down as Treasurer, and although he has a more than capable replacement in young Keith Boomer Miu, this didn t stop the Hang Seng Index crashing by nearly 0.1% when trading resumed. Some stability is maintained at the senior levels, as Paul McGunnigle will remain as Secretary and Dave Christmas will continue to oversee the KCC Royals ascendancy to the heights of the Legal League. Jon McKinley is staying on in a Marketing capacity, and Luca Il Capo will carry on as Captain of Football. Anthony Garreau steps in for Pickler on Tours and Events, and Mike Tyrell is taking over from Dharam as Knights supremo. With an Englishman a Scotsman, a Frenchman and an Italian on the committee we are in for some long meetings. The KCC junior programme now has nearly three times as many players as the three senior sides put together, and the time has come to ensure that the juniors get fair representation on the committee. With Smithee vacating the Head of Junior Football position, Ravi Panjabi will run the Colts teams playing in the HKFA leagues (Under-14 Under-18), Gary Luttrell the junior age groups (5 to 13 years) and Peta Lee the growing girls and ladies teams. The Annual Dinner following the AGM was as usual one of the highlights of the Hong Kong social calendar, and saw extended and emotional tributes to our outgoing comrades for their hard work in helping to make this the best section anywhere in the world. 12

Men s A Team Report The last time I reported, we had just come from an 8-0 drubbing by KBGC B away from home. I maintained confidence in the same twelve players in our next game away to Filipino Club where the green was abysmal. There were reasons to believe that the greens had not been cut or rolled beforehand and, with the wet weather, this was not an enjoyable experience. Nevertheless, we came away with a creditable 4-4 draw and seeing the reaction of the whole team when Chadwick Chen played his rink winning shot in the last end to finish gave me the distinct impression that there was still a lot of spirit left in this side. The after dinner drinks and team camaraderie in the bar in the KCC afterwards reinforced this view. What subsequently transpired was a total of 20 points from our next 3 games by beating HKFC A 8-0 away, Police 6-2 at home and ILBC 6-2, also at home. This has resulted in us going top of the league by 1 point over HKFC B. Still early days with two more games (home to CCC and away to KBGC A) before the first half of the season comes to a close. Mike Dowie A Team Captain CONVENOR'S COLUMN By the time you read this article, the first half of 2013 Premier League should have already been completed. The weather in the last two months was really bad, that caused frequent closure of the greens and inevitably many games were postponed, some as many as four times. In order to improve the quality of our top green for our 2nd half League Games and the HK Classics International competitions, the top green will be closed from 17 June till end of September for the re-surfacing project, while the bottom green will also be closed from 15 July till 19 August for maintenance and resting purposes. The top layer was removed as can be seen from the photo Peter, Ricky's assistant, working hard on the tractor. The lawn bowl storeroom has gone through the cleanup process, with the abandoned woods and relevant accessories to be dispatched to Thailand on 18 June as donation. Now the storeroom looks great with more space available for equipment storage. Recently the lawn bowl kiosk looks nicer with the addition of few bar chairs and a table. It will even be better as speaker system will be in place soon for music appreciation and announcement purpose. Have a great summer, and surely it will be more enjoyable by the second half of the premier league with the improved greens and environment! Kishu Lalchandani Re-surfacing Top Green Project Objective s To re-establish bowling green levels to meet world bowls specifications. (+/- 3mm over a 3m straight edge). Improve drainage rate by removing excessive grass organic matter which has built up over the years. Using the only laser leveling machine in Hong Kong especially designed for bowling greens we can guarantee the green will be level. Allow the player to enjoy his/her bowls knowing the surface will be flat and true. Shots can be played with confidence which will increase skill level and the overall enjoyment of the game. 14

Scope of Works Excavate a nominal 60mm below the highest point of the greens surface to remove all thatch and root matter. Add additional bowling green sand as required, rotary hoe green twice to a nominal 200mm depth to break up compaction and improve drainage. Laser level surface in preparation to fertilizing. Apply gypsum, organic s and fertilizer as per soil report recommendations. Amendments are rotary hoed twice to a nominal depth of 200mm. Laser grade surface in conjunction with static rolling. Rolling will consolidate the surface and ensure levels remain consistent after rotary hoeing. Final laser grade surface to meet world bowls specifications. Plant green with carpet grass. (Wide leaf grass) Install new ditch plinth to replace rotten wooden plinth prior to the green opening. Clean out ditches to meet world bowls standards prior to the green opening. Re-surfacing Outcome The greens surface will be free from runs, dips and hollows and the surface levels will be within World Bowls Specifications (+/- 3mm over a 3m straight edge). LADIES' A REPORT Summer is officially here and what a rainy one! Women s Premier League 2013 The first half of the summer league began on 27 April and Ladies' A had a blistering start at home winning full 8 points against a formidable Sea Bird A. Sadly, a week later, we had a reversal of fortune against HKFC A at their home green and returned without a single point. Although our home green has improved somewhat, we could only manage two points against FC A at home. Thereafter, the weather started to play havoc and we had to re-schedule the game against CCC A FOUR times! More times than the number of games actually played!! Hopefully, we will be successful on 19 June a night game. In the match against HKFC B at home, the 2013 HKLBA Annual Dinner greens were prepared at lightning speed even faster than other carpet greens in Hong Kong. This was a rather silly situation to be in considering our opponents HKFC B play on carpet and prefer that speed of green. So much for home advantage! The next day against KBGC A, just across the fence, our ladies avenged themselves and came back with six points. Now with only three games remaining to be played in the first half, KCC A are lying in the middle of the 1st Division table. We hope the second half will yield more points. The second half of the 2013 Premier League begins on 31 August. Ladies' A had a busy night on 31 May collecting awards for the 2012 season and national Competitions. Congratulations to all our winners: The new carpet grass surface has no thatch build up with will improve surface drainage. Bowlers now have the opportunity to improve their consistency due to playing on a perfectly grassed and level green Triples League Champion Rink: Mercredi Yeung and Pinky Chan. (Skip Mona Li not in picture) 2012 National Fours 1st Runners-up: Elizabeth Cormack, Mercredi Yeung, Daphne Gohel and Pinky Chan 2012 Triples League 1st Runners-up: Daphne Gohel, Elizabeth Cormack, Sonia Chan, Pinky Chan, Mercredi Yeung, Linda Robertson and Stella Lo with HKLBA Mike Worth. 17 KCC Wimbledon Grass Court Mini Tennis & Junior Tournament Recently on 9 June, Advanced Tennis Performance team ran the Hong Kong's first ever mini tennis grass court tournament at Kowloon Cricket Club. It was followed by the annual grass court tournament for the Juniors. It was a great tournament and we would like to thank all players, parents and members for their support. We would also like to express sincere thanks to all sponsors for the generous prizes and other items.

SQUASH Division 15 It is an exciting season! Since there was lack of lady teams joining and Ladies' Division was closed, our team decided to play on Main League Division 15A joined with Kelvin Law and Mark Chow in this season. The KCC Squash Section is proud to be sponsored by: These two guys shoulder an important duty in the team who sit at the Rank 1 position in order to let our lady squad play at rank 2 to 5 position in the match with more ease and confidence. In the first half of the season, our team took the leading position and never was beaten in a match. However, good things never come easy. We immediately tasted two consecutive failures just at the beginning of second half season and lost the No. 1 position. We at once rallied our force and lined up the strongest team to play the remaining games. Our team did exceptionally well with high spirits and great determination to win. We finally got the Champion on Div. 15A and eligible to play the Final Series of knock-out. Our efforts were paid off. We played against USRC in Final series. USRC was a strong team that we were running neck and neck and none of us could predict which team would win in the knockout finally. Dorothy s match was crucial factor to determine the winner. She lost the first two games initially but immediately she made up her mind and calmed down to retrieve two games back by support from cheerleaders of squash section. In the 5th game, Dorothy s opponent was leading by 12-7 but she fought relentlessly to score 7 points consecutively, bringing the score to By that time, during the season. Of course, special thanks to our teammates in the squash section for supporting us on the final series of knockout. We would not otherwise have won our second championship so dramatically as it was beyond of our expectation. Double Champion in Division 15A Yeah! Cecilia Siu tension was high as hearts skipped with every ball hit. Finally, Dorothy did a fantastic job and beat her opponent by We are the knockout champion as well, having beaten USRC by 3-2. I would like to express my deepest thanks and gratitude to all my teammates (Kelvin, Mark, Pauline, Dorothy, Deona, Natalie, Coco, Kat and Justin) for their contribution and effort on every match Division 4 League and Play Off Champion 18

Annual Match vs. Hong Kong Cricket Club 19 KCC players crossed over to the dark side on Saturday, 8 June, and ventured into unchartered territory (aka the HKCC squash courts) in order to play for and defend the coveted Cox s Road Cup. We were victorious last year and were determined to keep the trophy in its rightful place in the KCC. The team consisted of some of KCC s finest and most agile players: Evan, Gerald, Phoebe, Aaron, Victor, David B, Elise, Kat, Bosco, Kelvin (Yoona!), Anthony, Fung, Ronnie, Alex, Neal, Jon V, Pinky, Norman and Yeung Ho Wai. By the end of the first hour, both teams were tied with two games all. It looked like all stops had to be pulled out in order to get a leg up and bring the trophy back home. The two final matches of the day were by far the most intense. KCC s cream of the crop Neal Soo and Yeung Ho Wai (reigning national junior champion ) played against HKCC s elite Dick Lau (former national champion) and Patrick Choy. The first match saw Neal play against Patrick. Despite there being such a huge difference in size between these two, they managed to keep the crowd on the edge of their seats with a host of clever shot selections and strategies. The rallies were long, there were plenty of trick shots and the ball placement was spectacular. It was clear that both players were not going to back down without a fight. After the third game, Neal stepped up the pace, managed to edge away from Patrick to clinch the game and emerged with a 3-1 victory. Neal was also victorious a few hours prior to this match as he won the 2013 Hong Kong Crocodile Championship. Well done, Neal! If that wasn t enough to keep everyone buzzing for the next few hours, the final match of the day definitely did. KCC s young Division 1 player, Yeung Ho Wai faced one of Hong Kong s best squash players, Dick Lau. It was clear from the very beginning that this was going to be a long and arduous match as the rallies seemed to last for minutes and both players were able to return each other s shots with ease. There were fantastic drop shots, lobs that seemed to float in a perfect arc and plop in an impossible to reach corner and drives that were so powerful, you d expect there to be a hole in the receiver s racket from the impact. But no, every shot that was thrown at the other was returned with an equally, if not more precise stroke. After the fourth, it was a level pegging game. Both players had streams of sweat dripping down their faces and it was clear that their legs were getting tired from the huge distance they had covered so far on court but that didn t stop them from putting on a brilliant fifth and final game. Right up until the end, Dick and Yeung Ho Wai were neck and neck. Much to our disappointment, Yeung Ho Wai lost, but only by two points. It was a treat for us all to experience and learn from such an amazing squash match. Well done, Yeung Ho Wai! A special mention must also be given to Bosco, the youngest player who participated in the tournament. Even though his opponent was twice his size, he still put up a fight and showed the HKCC what the younger members of our section are capable of. In a few years time, I am sure he will be able to take on players like Neal, Patrick, Dick and Yeung Ho Wai. Thanks for coming and being part of the team, Bosco! We were treated to a buffet dinner afterwards where we ate till we wouldn t move and nursed our aching bodies. At the end of the day, the KCC were victorious with a hard fought 12-7 victory. A big thank you and congratulations must be given to all KCC players who participated and for making it such a fun afternoon. Thanks also to the HKCC for being such fantastic hosts and for being such good sports. It was a thoroughly entertaining day and I am sure we are all looking forward to the rematch next year. We have three more friendly competitions lined up for the rest of the year. These are against the LRC, HKFC and USRC. If you d like any more information about these games or would like to participate, head over to the squash courts for more details. Until next time! Kat Labrum 19

SQUASH New achievement in the Squash Section In Hong Kong Squash Championships 2013, defending champion, KCC Junior Subscriber Au Chun Ming Leo, beat Max Lee Ho Yin (world no.34) in the final 3-1 (11-9, 3-11, 11-9, 11-1) and won the title for the second consecutive year. Congratulations and well done, Leo! In the Milo All Star Junior Squash Championships 2013 held in Malaysia, KCC Junior Subscriber/National Junior Champion Yeung Ho Wai, upset the top seed Ryosei Kobayashi from Japan in the Boys' U19 final by 3-1 and took the title. KCC Junior Subscriber Chan Ho Ching, was the 2nd runnerup in the Girls' U17 group. Aaron Yip CORRECTION Dear Members, Please note the following typos in the June 2013 issue of the KCC Magazine: Cover: The correct title for the Squash Division 3 photo should be: Squash Division 3 League and Play Off Champions Page 24: The first line of the caption of the top photo should be: Division 3 League and Play Off Champions Page 31: Squash "Division 5" should be read as "Division 15A" We are sorry about these errors and any embarrassment these may have caused. Club Management KCC Squash host the Korean National Team On the 14th June the KCC hosted the Korean National Squash Team. The Korean bought there top 5 men and lady players to face a KCC select team. The Club team was lead by KCC member and former world number 13 Rebecca Chiu, KCC ladies team captain and former professional Elise Ng, and current sporting subscriber Neal Soo, who provided both leadership and inspiration to our excellent junior members. A close fought match ended with the KCC girls proving too strong for their Korean opponents, but the Korean men showing their match experience and impressive on-court speed to pull away winners in some close fought games. This is the second time the KCC has hosted the Korean National Team in the last 2 years, and it was very good to see some of our players play familiar opponents, and to note how their respective games had developed. Most pleasing though was to see sport brings so many young people together in friendship. After all this is really what sport is about, and also what it means to be part of a sports club like the KCC. Also in attendance to watch the games were HK National Coach Tony Choi and HK Squash Chief Executive Karl Mak. We were also pleased that David Mui, the chairman of HK Squash, was able to join us for an excellent after match dinner. It was very satisfying to hear so much praise not only for our young players, who conducted themselves well both on and off court, but also for the Club food, which we are all glad to say presented a perfect end to the evening. The singles matches were very close, but we won all the doubles, which means we won overall. They were more impressed with the famous lamb raan and apple crumble at the Coffee Shop than our snooker skills. More players We are happy to see many new-comers and youngsters down in the snooker room since it got renovated. Recently Harris Dad Detta made a high break 52! 33 FITNESS MARCEL ROBERT Fitness Centre Supervisor Qualification: KCC vs. HKFC 12 November International Certificate in Bronze Professional Personal Fitness Trainer Certified by The International Personal Trainers & Fitness Academy (IPTFA) Hong Kong Bronze Medallion Life Saving Certificate Certified by The Hong Kong Life Saving Society Certificate of Proficiency in First-Aid Treatment Recognised by Malaysian Ministry of Health Certificate of First Responder Life Support (FRLS) and CPR skills Recognised by Malaysian Ministry of Health Certified in Via Ferrata Guiding by UIAGM/IFMGA Certified by International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations Seated Dumbbell Biceps Curl Step 1: Starting Position Pick up a pair of dumbbells and sit on a bench (with a short, straight back) or a regular incline bench adjusted so the back is as straight up as possible. Your back flat firmly against the backrest, and your feet flat on the floor, hold the dumbbells with each hands and relax your shoulder, your elbows in and close to your body, and palms facing forwards. Step 2: Arms Workout (Biceps) Now, with a nice controlled motion, lock your elbows and slowly curl your biceps until it reach the point where your palms are facing your shoulders and try to squeeze your biceps as much as you may at the end. Do NOT swing and do NOT move your elbows. Slowly bring back the dumbbell to the starting point by reversing the motion. You may perform this exercise by alternating one hand at a time or both hands at the same time. Be sure to use both hands equally. Step 3: Breathing and Ending Position Exhale at the point you curl your biceps, and begin inhaling slowly as you bring the weight back down to the neutral position. After you finish your last rep, slowly lower the dumbbells to the starting position. Well done! You ve just done a really good exercise for your arms. Step 4: Good Tips It takes BRAIN and BRAWN to SPAWN the best in life! Perform 3 sets of this exercise with 10 to 16 repetitions each set, and take at least 2 minutes break in between each set. Perform the particular exercise at least 2 times per week alternately. Never attempt to hold your breath. Drink plenty of water. Remember, we can always eat and drink happily as long as we never skip exercising and enjoy the workout just like how we enjoy our foods and drinks. Have a healthy lifestyle! 34 GOLF Ferry Across Diyin Lake Our first ever trip to Diyin Lake Golf Club brought an unusual experience as after the 12th hole our carts were driven onto a ferry and we traveled around the lake to a long island section for the next three holes before hitting to the 16th hole, an island green. All three of us landed on the green in good positions and we then took our putters on a passenger ferry to the green and proceeded to putt out. All our birdie putts narrowly missed but we were rewarded with pars. We then got back on the small ferry to take us back to our carts which had been taken over to a jetty near the clubhouse and we drove to the 17th tee. The final hole is also an island green which we navigated with varying degrees of success and then made our way to a welcome shower and refreshments. As the name suggests there is some water around but not on every hole, only 16 of them, so careful shot placement and good course management were needed. The best gross score was Philip Chan with 91 with Mal Hammersley, Michael Tse and Sanjay Nainani all recording 94 but this is a stableford competition, the 5th event in our 2013 Stableford League, and the Champion was Sanjay Nainani with 36pts followed by David Brettell with 34pts and Michael Tse with 33pts. Results: Nearest the Pin: Hole 2: Richard Tinlin Hole 5: Eva Yu Hole 16: Barry Melbourne Hole 18: Sanjay Nainani Longest Drive: Michael Tse. Stableford: 1st: Sanjay Nainani 2nd: David Brettell 3rd: Michael Tse 36pts 34pts 33pts It is good to see David Brettell moving up the order, he has recently returned to playing golf after a very long absence but his talent for ball striking and his hand-eye coordination from a long career in Cricket and Squash will see him improving rapidly. Our next event will be held on Monday, 24 June on the interesting Phoenix Hill Golf Club courses B and C. The July event will now be held on Monday, 22 July at a new venue for the Society, a course which is highly rated for its design, scenery, customer service and the area for its food; we will be playing the Shunde Junan Garden course. It should be a great trip. We played the A and B courses but there is also a C course and the overall impression was of an excellent club with a well maintained courses and very good, knowledgeable caddies. Diyin Lake Club is a very new club and is about 20minutes on the highway beyond the Nansha exit but the extra journey was justified as we were looked after very well and the package was competitive and the food well presented. All players praised the trip and the facilities so this is likely to be a regular feature in coming years. August will see us going to Mission Hills on Monday, 12 August to play the Ozaki course, usually a very well supported event. In September, we are planning to play another new course, the Harbour Plaza in Dongguan which is a private course with a very good reputation. In the 2013 Stableford League, after 5 events Malcolm Hammersley is the leader on 159pts with Mark Eames on 151pts and Richard Tinlin third on 140pts. Barry Melbourne on 131pts is fourth and Vincent Lee on 116pts fifth. 34

With 6 more events to go and the best 5 performances to count, there is still a long way to go and some great courses to play so many players have the opportunity to move into contention. Pace of Play This is an important subject which can be a cause of great frustration for many players. Many courses advertise a target time for each round and on Kau Sai Chau (East and South) each buggy has the target time for each hole. Slow play affects everyone s enjoyment of the game. Players should make a real effort to play at a good pace. Priority on the course is determined by a group s pace of play. It is a group s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. In order to keep up a good pace the following tips are essential: Avoid excessive practice swings. Be ready to play as soon as it is your turn, for example have your glove on. Proceed to your ball as soon as it is safe to do so. If you want to determine yardages, do so while walking to your ball. At the putting green, leave bags/carts in a position that will allow quick and easy movement off the green to the next tee. Study your line of putt while others are putting, avoiding any distraction to the other players.when the hole is finished, leave the putting green immediately. Mark scores on the way to the next tee. If there is any chance of your ball being lost outside a water hazard or out of bounds, play a provisional ball. To some these hints may sound like a list of restrictions designed to take all of the fun out of playing golf. If you follow them you will find that the enjoyment factor will be increased even if all that happens is that you don t get abused by your committee or course marshals at certain courses. If you are going off on holidays to golf locations, have fun. We hope that if you are around on any of the monthly golf days that you will come along and enjoy the camaraderie of the Golf Society.
