AMATEUR MANAGER S MESSAGE As we come to the end of yet another season I would like to thank everyone for their contribution during the past season from groundsman, scorers, parents who supported their kids, wives who supported their husbands, officials who run clubs your efforts do not go unnoticed. We are very grateful to you guys. It has been another season of so near but so far for the Hollywood bets Dolphins as we had a chance of winning both the Sunfoil Series and the Momentum Cup going into the backend of both the competitions. It is unfortunate that we did not cross the line in both occasion, winning is a habit and I have seen the right signs that we are going in the right direction. It will be very wrong of me not to thank our wonderful sponsors Hollywood Bets for all the support and energy they have brought to our team and the staff at the Sahara Stadium Kingsmead. To our staff that have worked tirelessly throughout the year and the season at large a very big thank you to you too. Please enjoy the off season and time with your families. 6 KWAZULU-NATAL CRICKET UNION SCHOOLS REPORT Glenwood High School were red hot during the 2016/17 season, having sailed past Clifton College during the group stages and the semi-finals of the Coca Cola T20 Schools Challenge resulting in them winning the Provincial finals of the Coca Cola Schools Twenty 20 Challenge by beating St Charles in the Provincial final at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead. In a school match in Amanzimtoti Kingsway High School managed to score a mammoth total of 435 for 5 in their allotted 50 overs with Blu Belluigi scoring a record 248 not out (28x4) (11x6) against Reddam Umhlanga College during the first term fixtures. The Local schools league structure is strong and the administrators are constantly striving to find strategies to expand the base of schools playing in these leagues. We currently have 124 High Schools and 226 Primary Schools playing Cricket. KwaZulu Natal and KwaZulu Natal Inland now report to the same union which is the KZNCU led by the acting CEO Rajesh Behari but during schools and Provincial competition they stand alone, inter school s rivalry between the regions cricketing schools remains strong. Our traditional schools have adopted the declaration game for all 1st teams. Glenwood Old Boy Okuhle Cele and Northwood Old Boy Senuran Muthusamy were invited to be part of the CSA National Academy which starts from 22nd May till the end of July 2017, we wish them both the best of luck as they fly the flag of KZNCU. We currently have 4 Girls schools playing in a league format and we have 2 Primary Girls U13 festivals. The winter Programme caters for squads to be selected to represent KwaZulu Natal in the various National Weeks. Cricketers are put through a Programme including fitness, coaching and match situation awareness. We currently have 540 schools participating in our KFC Mini Cricket Programme with over Kids and 1419 coaches involved. Our Township Development Programme is growing stronger every year. We currently have 56 coaches, 144 Primary Schools and 73 High School in the Programme as well as 71 club teams that play in our Local league structures. Our Township Development Programme is getting stronger and stronger and is also preparing for the 10th Annual Sunfoil Township Tournament hosted at Hilton College from the 30th of June till the 5th July 2017.

Level 1 and 2 coaching courses for coaches were conducted during the season at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead. During our last financial year, KZN Cricket Union has produced over 40 level 1 and 25 level 2 coaches. The KZN Cricket Scorers Association currently has 25 members, all of whom have had either international or provincial scoring experience. The KZNCSA is committed to the transformation and development of scorers in this province and the Association s transformation figures remained above 50% for the 2016/17 season. The KZNCSA will be running Level I training courses at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Saturday 8th April 2017 in the morning and the Level 2 course will be on the same day in the afternoon. The courses are available to interested scorers from KZN Inland and Coastal schools and clubs. The dates of these courses will be circulated to the media and clubs as soon as they have been confirmed. Trainee scorers are also offered hands-on training and mentoring at every opportunity throughout the season. A detailed survey of linear scoring in local schools was undertaken by the Trainers during the 2015/16 season. The KZN Dolphins Academy began in February with an intake of 18 Boys. The team has already begun their rigorous training and preparation for the Franchise Academy Week in Potchefstroom. We currently have a total of 39 umpires that umpire in our local Premier League to the Women s League. Umpires also appointed for other matches as requested by the KZNCU - Franchise, Provincial, Academy & Schools: Friendlies, Warm up, other fixtured matches outside of the KZNCU League. 8 TOWNSHIP DEVELOPMENT Overview Initiated in 2007, the KZNCU Township and Rural Development Programme was borne out of the need to introduce cricket to townships and rural areas in Kwazulu-Natal where it was non-existent, and virtually unheard of. The programme currently works with close to 8000 children in 36 townships and rural areas across the province, as far afield as KwaMashu, Gamalakhe and Mtubatuba, affording them both an opportunity to play cricket, as well as creating platforms whereby they can change their set of circumstances (for example, through facilitating bursaries at top schools for talented cricketers). Our History In 1987, Linda Zondi, an 11-year-old boy growing up in KwaMashu, was introduced to cricket through what was then known as Bakers mini-cricket. He later made it in to the KZN under-12, under-15, under-17 and under-19 sides, and completed his secondary schooling on a bursary at Glenwood High. He also played alongside former Proteas Mark Boucher and Makhaya Ntini for South Africa under-19 and the Dolphins B team. But that s where his dream ended. Zondi always felt that he and his peers weren t given a fair opportunity to further their ambitions, so when he was asked to head KZNCU s development programme, he didn t hesitate and left his post as director of cricket at Glenwood high. Zondi sold his vision of cricket development to fellow players, coaches and educators at school, successfully enlisting their assistance. Under his management the programme grew to the extent, where within a highly organised structure 57 coaches work with 7630 children in 36 townships and rural areas across the province. In 2015, Zondi became Cricket South Africa s first black national convener of selectors and had to resign as manager of the programme. His shoes were filled by Sanelisiwe Kuzwayo, who is familiar with the workings of the programme, having worked as a personal assistant to Zondi from 2009 to 2013, and then as assistant manager of the programme. Under her management, the programme continues to thrive, and tap into previously untapped areas in the province.

How we work The programme operates as per structured system, creating a pipeline via which its cricketers can develop their potential and talent and attain specific goals. Step 1 Introducing cricket to schools Firstly, capacity building workshops are held at schools in the respective areas within which the programme aims to work. Here, educators are introduced to the elementary aspects of cricket. Step 2 School coaching clinics Coaching clinics involving both, coaches from the programme, kids as well as teachers, are held at the schools. Step 3 Dedicated area coaches The programme hires a coach who resides in the relevant township or rural area. This is because firstly, it is crucial that the coach understands the culture of the area within which he s working as well as the schools there. Secondly, it s important that the children can relate to a familiar face from within their area. The coach embarks on a coaching programme at specific primary schools and high schools in that area, under our supervision. At this stage, a fixture structure is also formed within that area, so that schools can play matches against each other. Step 4 Cricket fixtures and club cricket School and zonal fixtures for example, between UMlazi and KwaMashu are then held, and if there s wide interest within the community (amongst both boys and girls) a club is formed, which then plays Sunday fixtures within the Durban and District Cricket Union (DDCU) club structure. Currently fifty teams from the programme (extending across the u-11, u-13, u-15, u-19 and open divisions) play DDCU fixtures, namely: INK (made up of Inanda, Ntuzuma KwaMashu and Lindelani) UMlazi (includes Ngonyameni) Asande (made up of KwaNdengezi and St. Wendolins) Mpumalanga UMgababa FAM (Folweni, KwaMakutha and Adams Mission) UMbumbulu Lamontville Kwangcolosi Chesterville Hambanathi (plays in Tongaat League) KwaDabeka Molweni Thandanani (plays in UThungulu Cricket League) Esikhawini (plays in UThungulu Cricket League) Mbali (plays in PMB League) Sweetwater s (plays in PMB League) Osizweni (plays in Newcastle League Step 5 Annual Township Schools Tournament During the various fixtures (club, zonal, schools) talented cricketers are identified and invited to try out for the annual KZNCU, DSR, Sunfoil Township Schools Tournament, the programme s main platform for talent identification in the under-15 and under-19 age divisions. Step 6 Annual Township Schools Tournament At the Annual Township Schools Tournament, the talent is narrowed down and a group of cricketers is selected to form part of the elite squad. Cricketers in the under-11, under-13 and under-17 divisions are also selected at other platforms - for the elite squad which totals 72. The elite squad which includes both males and females - benefits from high performance training which takes place weekly at the Sahara Kingsmead Stadium and engages the cricketers in a holistic programme incorporating cricket coaching, fitness, body conditioning and mentorship. The age divisions making up the elite squad, also play Saturday fixtures against traditional cricketing schools like Glenwood High, Durban High School, Clifton, Maritzburg College, etc.

Our People Sanelisiwe Kuzwayo Programme Manager Sanelisiwe Kuzwayo, better known as Sane among her peers, holds a National Diploma in Sports Management from the Durban University of Technology. She also completed a post graduate diploma in project management via MANCOSA. Sane joined the KZNCU as an intern in In 2009 she became the personal assistant to Linda Zondi, who was then the manager of the Township and Rural Development Programme. In 2014, she was promoted to assistant manager of the programme, and in 2015 she became the manager after Linda Zondi became the Cricket South Africa national convener of selectors. I see myself as changing the African child s challenges into opportunities. You can see a person who is faced with so many challenges prospering through this programme like a dying flower; when you water it, you start to see the beauty within the flower. Kwazi Mdluli Assistant Manager Growing up, Kwazi Mdluli loved watching cricket on television. So, when at 14, he was given an opportunity to play the game for Lamontville High School, he didn t hesitate and was an opening batsman for both the school, as well as the township s cricket club. As an adult Mdluli joined the KZNCU Township and Rural Development Programme as a session coach, and worked his way up to a position as supervisor for the Lamontville, Chesterville, KwaNyuswa and Maphephethweni regions. In September, this year, Mdluli was promoted to assistant manager for the programme, a position which sees him liaising with the supervisors on a regular basis, as well as undertaking various other hands-on tasks. I m a person who is passionate about cricket and I ve noticed so much of talent. There s a lot of potential as kids are coming through and making it to KZN. This shows that work is going on and the kids can make the junior teams and the Proteas someday. Thobeka Ntuli Programme Administrator Thobeka Ntuli studied sports management via Varsity College. She began working as an intern at KZNCU in 2013, after which she worked as the personal assistant to Jesse Chellan, the then CEO of KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union. In 2015 she became the administrator for the Township and Rural Development Programme. I ve got to work with a lot of different people, and I ve got to work for the community that s the main reason I chose to work for this department.

SUPERVISORS Supervisors play a key role in ensuring the success of the programme. They visit the respective areas under their supervision at least once a week to empower the coaches with further knowledge and skills and address any issues they may face. Supervisors are also responsible for creating KFC Centres of Mini Cricket in their areas, as well as organising the KZN Mini Cricket Festival. Importantly, they also structure mini-elite programmes within their areas, thereby assisting in identifying additional talent. Four supervisors currently serve the programme. Xolani Gasa: Supervisor for UMlazi, KwaMakutha, Ngonyameni, Adams Mission, UMgababa, Folweni Cricket to me is life. Everything to me is cricket. I m a groundsman at Umlazi Comtech. I like the fact that the most of these kids are coming from poor families, now they have an opportunity to feel happy. Siyabonga Gumede: Supervisor for Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu and Lindelani (INK), Verulam and Tongaat My passion is coaching cricket. I like to make sure that cricketers who have talent are given an opportunity. Linda Nkibane: Supervisor for Verulam, Ngcolosi, KwaDabeka, Claremont and Molweni Where I come from in KwaMashu, you see kids smoking it s not okay, it s a bad environment. When you take kids to play cricket, you change them for the better. Bheki Nyathikazi: Supervisor for KwaNdengezi, KwaSanti, Mpumalanga and KwaXimba This for me is an opportunity to give back to my community with the talent that I have. COACHES About sixty coaches from various townships and rural areas run, maintain and monitor the programme. They constitute the backbone of the programme, and serve as a link between the programme s office and the community. They are not paid very well, and are driven by passion and love for the children they serve.

KZNCU, DSR, Sunfoil Township Schools Tournament The Sunfoil Township Schools Tournament takes place annually at Hilton College during the winter school holidays. Hundreds of boys from various townships and rural areas across the progress converge on UMlazi Comtech ahead of the tournament for trials. A total of 154 cricketers (six under-15 and six under-19 teams) from the province participate together with invited teams from other provinces like Gauteng, Northern Cape, Border and Western Cape. The tournament is of paramount importance as it is here that cricketers are identified for potential bursaries and scholarships at top cricketing schools. The under-15 and under-19 components of the programme s elite squad is also selected here, as are those cricketers who will be sent for KZN trials. But it isn t just the cricket which the boys look forward to. It should be remembered that most of these youngsters come from very poor backgrounds. Some go to bed without having anything to eat. For them, staying at Hilton College is like being in a hotel they get three meals a day, they get to have hot water showers and sleep in comfortable beds. The programme is therefore eternally grateful to the Willowton Group for making this tournament possible for the last eight years. Department of Sports and Recreation KZN The department of sports and recreation is a major supporter of the programme at various levels. Its contributions include: Capacity building workshops for educators and communities Paying the salaries of coaches Mass participation programmes geared towards promoting and transforming sport in rural and township communities Covering the cost of transporting club teams to their respective fixtures High performance programme Erecting cricket nets in some of the areas Willowton Group The Willowton Group makes the highlight of our calendar they have been part of the programme from the time we started the Sunfoil Township Schools Tournament possible by funding key aspects including accommodation, meals and clothing for the participants. Sports Development Trust The Sports Development Trust has regularly provided quality equipment to cricketers within the programme. This has ranged from cricket spikes to full cricket kits, as well as prizes and vouchers for the best players at the Sunfoil Township Schools Tournament. Department of Sports and Recreation KZN The department of sports and recreation is a major supporter of the programme at various levels. Its contributions include: Providing breakfast packs for the high-performance squad, each Saturday Providing much-needed food assistance for the impoverished families of cricketers within the programme Providing kit support through donating new and second hand kits to the programme Co-hosting an end of the year party for 500 of the children within the programme. KZNCU provides the venue and ILM-SA provides food, treats, entertainment and transport money for the children. Providing partial bursaries for our cricketers

Success Stories BURSARIES Over the years, several boys from within our programme have received bursaries from some of the province s premier cricketing schools thanks to their cricketing ability. In addition to developing their cricketing skills, this presents them with the opportunity to access high quality education which is not readily available in their townships/rural areas, where most schools are severely under-resourced. Initially, this initiative would involve only high schools, but when we realised that it was a huge adjustment for a boy growing up in a township/rural area to suddenly be introduced to an entirely different surrounding and culture in grade eight, we began considering expanding the bursaries to include the senior primary school phase. Schools which have provided our cricketers with bursaries to date are: Glenwood Preparatory School Banele Cele and Makabongwe Ngcobo (from grade 4 to grade 7) Murchiston Preparatory School Luyanda Gasa (grade 7) Glenwood High School Lindokuhle Hlongwane (matric), Thamsanqa Khumalo (grade 11), Thabiso Shangase (grade 9), Mhlengi Ndaba (grade 9) and Nhlanhla Mbese (grade 8) Maritzburg College Bayanda Gumbi (grade 9), Mondli Khumalo (grade 9), Nqobile Msomi (grade 8) and Sanele Mbatha (grade 8) Northwood School Samkelo Gasa (grade 9), Wonder Mtolo (grade 9) and Andile Mogakane (grade 9) KZN Selection Thanks to the cricketing foundation laid by the programme, on an annual basis, over the years several boys and girls have been selected to represent KZN in its various age divisions: 2010/11 Thulani Goqo (boys under 13) 2012/13 Samke Mkhize, Nomzamo Shabane, Nondumiso Shangase, Samkelisiwe Vilakaze, Nhlebela Langelihle (girls under 19) Nduduzo Mfoza, Mlungiseleli Gcado, Mluleki Vilakazi (boys under 17), Thamsanqa Khumalo (boys under 15) 2014/15 Nondumiso Shangase and Lungi Khwela (women s national squad) Makhosazane Kunene, Samkelisiwe Mkhize, Sabathile Madlala, Nomzamo Shabane, Samkelisiwe Vilakazi (girls under 19), Nduduzo Mfoza (boys under 17/19), Sthabiso Zungu, Lindokuhle Hlongwane (boys under 17), Sbusiso Ngqengelele, Sandiso Mkhize (rural), Thamsanqa Khumalo, Wanda Mtolo (boys under 15), Kwanele Cele, Mondli Khumalo, Sanele Mnqayi (boys under 13) 2015/16 Lutendi Tsanwani, Minenhle Ntombela, Sfundo Zuma, Sbongakonke Mchunu, Khulekani Mseleku (boys under 11) Asamkele Kawu, Nandipha Njapha, Nobuhle Xaba, Zesizwe Mngadi, Amahle Shoba (girls under 13) Makabongwe Ngcobo, Sanele Mbatha, Luyanda Gasa, Nqobile Msomi, Banele Cele, Thulani Chiliza (boys under 13) Wonder Mtolo, Mhlengi Ndaba, Thabiso Shangase (boys under 15), Thamsanqa Khumalo, Thabiso Gadini (boys under 17) Sandiso Mkhize, Thulani Mtolo, Sbusiso Nqengelele, Tholinhlanhla Zungu (boys under 17 rural), Nduduzo Mfoza, Sthabiso Zungu (boys under 19), Sabathile Madlala, Nomzamo Shabane, Yolanda Khanyile, Samukelisiwe Vilakazi, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Makhoazane Kunene (girls under 19)

A message from our manager The KZNCU Township and Rural Development programme is more about touching lives, as remember, we are dealing mostly with underprivileged children. More than just teaching them cricket, we pride ourselves on changing the lives of African children and transforming their challenges into opportunities. Historically, cricket has always been a sport for the privileged the equipment is expensive, there are field specifications to consider, and a formal active support structure is required on the part of parents whose children are playing cricket. None of these is easily accessible for the children we are working with, but we persevere because the result is worth it. Often, it s like we are watering a dead flower, with the aim of reviving it, because most our children have lost hope in life because of their upbringing or background. Thanks to the perseverance of our staff, and the passion our children have for cricket, as well as the support of the KZNCU and our sponsors, the programme has risen against all odds to bring forth many a success story since its inception in Sane Kuzwayo Township Dev.
