5 VIEW FROM THE CHAIR When we raised our new flag on our new flagpole* last April, the usual atmosphere of optimism and excitement heralded the new season. At the same time we said farewell to a number of players who, for various reasons, had decided to retire or leave the club. At this point the close season work of the captains, coaches and committee had to be re-assessed. It is a credit to the club, and something I am very proud of, that we were able to take stock and get back on to the front foot! A number of our Academy products stepped up, the 2nd and 4th XIs gained promotion, charitable status was secured on 13 June, our cricket week was successfully re-instated and we held a variety of lunches including our usual highly successful VP lunches. We also began what has become a mutually beneficial relationship with Gray Palmers as our kit stockists and began to work much more closely with our neighbours, the Golf Club. Although not without its teething problems, Club Buzz was introduced as an online membership and payment system. We launched an appeal for our net cage extension and have raised 13,000 towards our target of 28,000 - DONATIONS STILL WELCOME and they can, of course, now be Gift -aided. A real highlight of the season came at the end with our first formal presentation evening in many years. Over 70 players and supporters attended. Our pre-season dinner attracted almost 100 guests In 2015 we welcome a number of new players including our first Club Coach, Matt Gouldstone. With Joe Barrs as 1st XI skipper the emphasis will be on youth. Along with Pellys, LPA and HCL, we also welcome a range of new sponsors who want to be associated with this great club. My thanks go to our dedicated army of volunteers both on and off the field who make this club work. I want many to do a bit rather than a few do a lot and, with over 80 volunteers, I think we can claim some success with regard to this. Thank you! Now let s raise the flag on David Barrs Chairman * With thanks to the generosity of Paul Fairhurst 5

7 A VIEW FROM THE SCOREBOX In a sense, the 2014 season began in February when it was announced that Clacton had withdrawn from the East Anglian Premier League and that it was too late to replace them for the new season. It was agreed that no one would be relegated from the EAPL but that the team finishing bottom should forfeit 100 of its ECB grant to a well-known cricket charity of which I happen to be Hon Secretary. The 1st XI thus had two weekends off, the first of them on the second Saturday of the EAPL season. Ever the optimist, I thought this might do wonders for availability for the ECB KO cup game the following day against Granta but, if anything, it seemed to have the opposite effect and we were well beaten. In each of the other two cups we were unable to raise a side for midweek fixtures and the matches were conceded. Availability was an issue for the 1st XI throughout the season. A number of players moved clubs early in 2014 and work precluded regular appearances from two more. Of the top nine wicket-takers in 2013, only Jack Sneath appeared regularly in Our new overseas player, Andrew Winton (an opening bowler rather than an all-rounder), with 41 wickets, more than replaced Glen Batticciotto s 31 wickets but not his 885 runs. He took six wickets at Bury St Edmunds (and Simon Parmenter, on a rare day off from work at Sunningdale Golf Club, six catches) to record the second of only four wins all season. The first had come at home to Woolpit when a partnership of 181 between Lloyd Parmenter (129) and Jason Gallian (69*) enabled us to chase down 223. Another large partnership at the AAPF, this time 246* between Charlie Knightley (165*) and Gallian (73*) meant that scoreboard pressure saw us home against Burwell. New recruit Cameron Taylor was second to Winton in wickets taken with 12, half of them as we completed the double against Woolpit when an amazing innings from Chris Wisbey (91*) saw us home. These, however, were isolated high points in a batting line-up that relied heavily on skipper Giles Ecclestone, batting for most of the season with one fit arm but still managing to average 42. The batsmen could not have wished for better conditions in which to bat, at least at home, where Sniper s record in the EAPL Ground of the Year award in the last three seasons now reads like the STD code for Birmingham. There was happier news from the 2nd-5th XIs. The 2nd XI, led once again by Adrian Grinonneau and owing much to 45 wickets for the returning Niraj Odedra, overcame its disappointment at narrowly missing out on promotion in 2013 and made sure by winning 11 of its last 19 games, the other 8 being drawn or called off for rain. Grinners is stepping down this year (it is rumoured he has been recalled to the MoD to plot the invasion of South Thanet should UKIP hold the balance of power after May 7th) and Ray Mordini, once he recovers from a broken wrist, will skipper in The 3rd XI, playing in a league containing the 1st XIs of six other clubs, did just enough to stay up whilst the 4th XI gained promotion for the second time in four years. Long-serving skipper (and Hon Treasurer) Peter Hill thought this was a good time to retire and John Southgate takes over this year. Simon Cooke steps up to lead the 5th XI. The Man in the Box 7

31 SAFFRON WALDEN ACADEMY 2014 The Academy continues to go from strength to strength. In 2014 we had our ECB Clubmark status renewed for another 3 years and this is in no small measure due to the work of a band of volunteer coaches and managers who all do their bit to make cricket available, in the right spirit, to over 300 young members. It is 10 years since the Academy was established and in 2014 we achieved an ambition which we had worked towards throughout that time - our u16s became Essex champions by beating Loughton convincingly in the Essex Matchplay competition - for the first time in our history. There was also silverware in the leagues for under 9s (WEDCB), Under 10s (CYCA and WEDCB), Under 12s (CYCA and Hugh Craig Cup), Under 13s (CYCA) and Under 15s (WEDCB). The girls section has grown in numbers and now regularly win matches against boys who are up to 2 years younger. The Crocus section is a force to be reckoned with too. We also introduced a senior and a junior Emerging Player (EP) squad to make sure our best players at any given time are encouraged to take their game to further heights.
