1 BOWLING NEWS Page 1 Thursday May 31st, 2012 California Bowling News P.O. Box 4160, Downey, CA Online: news@californiabowlingnews.com Office: (562) Fax: (562) Sean Rash Wins PBA Player of the Year Award Belmonte 2nd Fagan 3rd in closest voting contest in years CHICAGO Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., was named as Professional Bowlers Association Chris Schenkel Player of the Year Monday, concluding one of the most competitive Player of the Year contests in years. Rash, who made a record five-consecutive television finals during the 2011 PBA World Series of Bowling and concluded his season with a victory in the PBA Tournament of Champions, was elected over a field of 11 eligible candidates in balloting conducted among his fellow PBA Tour competitors and veteran members of the bowling news media. In the end, Rash received percent of the Player of the Year votes, Australia s Jason Belmonte percent and Mike Fagan of Dallas percent in the closest voting contest in years. Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., received percent and Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., percent to round out the top five vote-getters. The announcement was made live on PBA s Xtra Frame online bowling channel as a special kickoff to the made-for-television PBA Summer Shootout special event at 10pin bowling lounge in Chicago. During the PBA Tour season, Rash, a 29-yearold right-hander, won the season-ending PBA Tournament of Champions for his only title, but had six championship round finishes, including third place in the PBA World Championship. Qualifying for a record five consecutive TV finals during the World Series of Bowling helped the Alaska native dominate PBA Tour stats where he finish first in average, points and earnings. We all had great seasons, but I think winning the TOC put a stamp on it, Rash said. I m a stats guy. When I voted in the past, I voted by the numbers. They don t lie. If one of those guys had won the TOC, he would have got my vote. I felt a big sign of relief, he said of the moment PBA Bowling News Honor Roll Name Score Date Center sharon weger canoga park bowl david foster fountain bowl lance hodgin Empire bowl william doc Taylor victor bowl steve lea deer creek lanes joshua tajiri keystone lanes mike chapman premier lanes ernie fenton Trevi lanes mike mellick la habra 300 bowl micah papalia chaparral lanes emerson wafer CAL bowl cookie armenta del rio lanes Ubuild Lenon jewel city bowl fred smith linbrook bowl ATTENTION ALL BOWLERS: bowl an honor score THIS WEEK & by Tuesday Noon YOUR NAME, SCORE, DATE & CENTER & you will be on the front page to: news@californiabowlingnews.com men: & 7-10 s Women: 298,299,300, 700+ & 7-10 s 6 Gamer - $ st Place check-in SUNDAY, June 3rd at 5PM 4:30 Entry Fee: $50 Optional - Sidepots $6 - Blocks $4 Call Jon at (949) for more info. No matter, he already has scored a 724. His previous high game was a 278. I was there to see Ernie reach perfection and am happy to see another good guy have his dream come true. I didn t notice any hesitation in Ernie s step or swing, during his momentous tenth frame, but he told me afterward that he was very nervous. Who hasn t been nervous in the tenth frame of their first perfecto?ernie is retired and never had time to bowl while he was still working. Hence, he has only been bowling the last fifteen years. During Ernie s latter days he has gone from a 150 bowler to a high book of 199 this past spring. Who knows what great things lie ahead for Ernie? Ernie would like to thank FRANK MAZIEKES of Strike Zone Pro Shop for doing a great job drilling his bowling balls, especially the Columbia Full Swing he used to reach perfection. He is grateful to BOB URBAN for being a great friend, and is especially grateful to his wife HELEN for supporting his tenpin journey. Michigan Deaf Bowling League s 75th Anniversary Banquet drew 75 people and many of the older living bowlers regretted not being able to attend. The chairperson Vicki Clark introduced some older bowlers (Lombardi as one of them) in attendance and the League President Deborah Petersmatck presented clock plague awards to Lombardi and some of the long time bowlers. Tributes were paid the late long time officers of the league Harry Petrowske, Jr. and Roger Adams. Then dinner was served. In the historical part of the program book it said the league was founded by a group of deaf men in as Detroit Deaf Bowling League. The league had moved around a lot but has been at Universal Lanes in Warren, MI the longest. Over the years the name has changed to Tri-County Silent Bowling League for few years, then to Motor City Deaf Bowling League. Since 1975 it has been known as Michigan Deaf Bowling League. At that time there were separate leagues for both men and women until when Mary Beth Tromley became the first lady to join the men s league. Then in 1999 the league became an official mixed league as it continues today. Over the years, many different officers had served the league. It is recognized that Harry Petrowske, Jr. and Roger Adams had served the longest. Currently Michigan Deaf Bowling League is open to all deaf men and women at Universal Lanes. We also welcome CODA (Children Of Deaf Adults), ASL (American Sign Language) students and interpreters to bowl with us. The league bowls on Tuesdays mext Fall at 6:30 PM. It ends with: Finally we are hoping this league will continue to grow stronger for another 75 years! PETE KACZMARCZYK ROLLS 300 TO HELP TEAM WIN THIRD PART OF ALL-STARS CLASSIC DETROIT Lombardi also included a clipping of May 2nd Detroit s bowling publication BOWLER s Digest which mentioned deaf Pete Kaczmarczyk, a former PBA touring pro, rolling a 300. In BOWLER s Digest Tom Strobl wrote about the powerful leading Romulus Auto Supply five some which had rolled back to back 3600 series in the strong Ebonite Thunderbowl All-Star Classic League. On the league s third round final position night, Romulus was matched against 2nd place Kaczmarczyk s Northridge Insurance, which turned out to be an exciting battle. Romulus came out of the gate with a 1252 against Northridge s 1156 in first game for a 96 pins lead. In the 2nd game Kaczmarczyk fired a 300 help Northridge to a 1271 while Romulus slumped to 1121 giving Northridge a lead of 54 pins. In third game Northridge kept on swinging to thoroughly whip the bedraggled Romulus as they tied with 1141 games. Northridge won the 3rd part of the season while Romulus fell into tie for 2nd with two other teams. Strobl wrote, on that final night the league averaged 223 to bring the league average 211 for the season with the top average of 228 by two bowlers. Kaczmarczyk s 300 is one of the league s s for the season along with three 800 series. Congrats to Pete Kaczmarczyk on his 300 and it came at a great time.. The Modern Edge Personal Trainer averaged 229 in qualifying, 218 during match play, and 247 for two stepladder matches. The second Women s Bowling Alliance National title holder takes home $4,000 and a beautiful trophy for her efforts. Stefanie Nation led all qualifiers by averaging 236 for 6 games (+219), but it took her 3 squads of separate qualifying to get it right. Low to qualify was Tina Balser averaging 209 (+55). Two 300 games were rolled by Clara Guerrero and Christa Jordan. Highlights include 16 year old phenom Makayla Douglas, Sandy, OR making her second WBA event, senior bowler Linda Kelly of Kettering, OH making match play finals along with her daughter Megan, and 11 finalists were former collegiate bowlers. Cassandra is no stranger to bowling, but because there are only 2 Major tournaments for women to bowl, many of the outstanding college standouts have yet to be seen. The Perfect Game by Steve Felege Carol: Welcome back, Steve. If I recall correctly, two weeks ago we were about to deal with a violent criminal s question about making a particular spare which he finds to be...annoying. You seemed to be pretty shook up after we read Sing-Sing Cecil s question. Steve: That was more than a question, Carol! That was a threat! Carol: So, do you want to call it quits? Steve: Of course not! I m not afraid of an ex-con. He s loves his mom and he s paid his debt to society. He s probably one of the nicest... Carol:...he s 6 4, 280 lbs, covered in tattoos, loves reptiles and bats, and if you don t give him some good advice for making the seven pin spare, he s going to hunt you down, rip your arms off and beat you with them - his words, not mine. Steve: How could you possibly know all that? Carol: I had Dean Google him...want to see his picture? Steve: You got his picture? Carol: Well, mug-shot. Here, take a look. Steve: Man! That s one mean looking son-of-a-... we need to renegotiate my contract!!! Carol: Nothing would make me happier, Steve. But first we need to finish this week s column so Dean can get it into the paper. Agreed? Steve: Agreed! Carol: So, last week we were discussing Cecil s inability to make the seven pin spare. You claimed to have a number of different solutions. Steve: That s correct, so let s get to it. First, I have to assume that, like many lefties, his shots hook a lot. Excessive hook does make it hard to convert corner-pin spares. This is true whether you are right, or lefthanded. It s important for Cecil to understand that his problem is not physical, it s mental. Oh, that didn t come out right! let s just say that he lacks confidence. Making a corner pin spare requires aiming his shot toward the channel. Subconsciously that s a big no-no. The natural tendency is to pull the ball away from any danger zone. Now, while the problem is mental, the solution is physical. He needs to change the ball s path so that he can deliver it more directly to its destination. Here are some tips to accomplish that: - Begin with your stance as far to the right as possible and use a deep inside line. If there s extra oil in the center of the lane, it will reduce the ball s hook. - Keep your wrist positioned so that the thumb is at 12 o clock during the release. This rolls the ball straight off your hand and keeps it on a tighter line as it travels down the lane. - Loft the ball farther out onto the lane. This shortens the distance that the ball is in contact with the lane. A shorter lane means less time for the ball to hook. - Use one finger instead of two when you grip the ball. This will reduce the lift you give to the ball when you release it. Less lift means less roll. Less roll means less hook. Personally, I hate this tip but former pro bowler Gary Dickenson employed it successfully. - My personal favorite is to use a house ball. Find an old rubber or plastic ball on the racks; all bowling centers have them. Find one with extra large thumb and finger holes. A conventional grip is best. These clinkers just don t hook! With such a ball, you may find that there s no need to modify your technique at all. That s ideal! If you can t find one that suits you, pick one up at a garage sale and have it re-drilled by your favorite pro shop. - Ball manufacturers are very creative these days. I m sure it s just a matter of time until they develop a ball made strictly for corner pin shots. It will be very hard with a slick surface that will make it slide like a hockey puck. Cecil, my advice is that when such a ball becomes available, be the first in line to get one. There you have it, Cecil. Any one of these tips should solve your problem. If not, combine two or more until you achieve success. If you still can t make a seven pin, you know where to find me. I ll be right here in northern Minnesota waiting for you. Carol: Northern Minn... Dean: Hey! Carol! There s some guy here named Cecil! Says he s looking for Steve...is he still here? Carol: He was here just a second ago... Lillian, have you seen Steve? Lillian: He just ran out the back door! He s fast for such an old guy! Carol: Whew, that was close. Nice job Dean for photo-shopping up Cecil. The spiky purple hair was a nice touch. Dean: Thanks. I feel sorry for Steve, though. You re never going to renegotiate, are you. Carol: Why, Dean! Whatever do you mean? Dean: You re evil. Carol: I prefer to say, creative and frugal. 5 BOWLING NEWS Page 5 American Bowlers Tournament Association P.O. Box 3721, Santa Fe Springs, CA Cell: Catamisan Wins Memorial ABTA at West Covina Lanes Seven Hit Match Game of $2,960 John Samson Bags a $2,018 Match series ABTA Returns to Westminster Lanes Saturday is $1,700 at Westminster Match Game est $1,100 Match Series $350 WEST COVINA We returned to West Covina Lanes this past weekend for our four day Memorial Tournament with a nice turnout of 514 entries. Again, we thank all the members of the ABTA for their support each week. We had a tough shot for the tournament each qualifying daily. Our cut score on Thursday was +75 for the men and +78 for the women. On Friday we had cut scores of +54 for the men and +43 for the women. Saturday was +74 for the men and +59 for the women. On Sunday it was +67 for the men and +43 for the women. Re-Entry squad on Sunday it was +49 for the men and +20 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (3 men and 2 women) were Mark Anthony, Javier Avila and Bob Ricketts, Women Janice Meloon and Bobbie McCollum. Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 100 bowlers making it to the semi-finals for the chance at the Big Bucks! The top Qualifiers for this event for the Men was Michael Kong +145 and for the women it was Sarah Magno Each will get paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. Each week the top seed draws the Match Series, and this time it was worth $2,018. Kong drew a 624. We had one bowler who matched the score and it is affable John Samson who was quite happy to say the least. He is very deserving! This week we will estimate the Match Series at $350. For the Roll off, Eugene Big Cat Haynes was the last one to go for the $1,600 pot, but missed on his second shot and received $100 for consolation. The 3/6/9 will be $1,700 at Westminster. In our optional doubles, finishing in first were The Kongs Samson and Michael with a 1417 for $180. Finishing second was Michael Kong and Vic Fabian 1414 for $160. There was a total of $2,050 paid out in doubles and 30 paid spots with low to cash of We will now see 99 bowlers advance to the Semifinals to Cash checks. In the Semis we saw Steve Brode lead the field with a +157 to sit out and bowl for the title and the runner-up was Joevin Bolanos with a +154 to sit out the first round. It took a +60 for the men and +36 for the women to make our top 32. Our top seed Brode had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $2,960. He drew a 202. Round 3 Emilio Flores, Rey Montalvan, Aileen Cheunga, Sol Cericos and they cashed for $325 each. We are now down to the final five bowlers. We saw Freddie Catamisan edge Tim Tran and Joevin Bolanos smashed a win over Dennis Kelsey. Dennis and Tim get $600 each in 4th and 5th places with Joevin and Freddie meet for the right to bowl Brode for the coveted title. In this match Freddie s 170/194 to Joevin 162/193 ( a nail biter for sure). Joevin was 3rd and $1.250 and Mr. Catamisan off to the title game vs Steve Brode and for those lucky investors that had him as a horse, he paid $75. The title game was set and bowled on Lanes 11 and 12. We would see two of our nicest regulars Steve Brode and Freddie Catamisan for the crown. Steve being the top seed elected to have Freddie lead off the match. Freddie spared in the first two frames while Brode was having a nightmare with 2 big splits. Fred Doubled in frames 3-4 and Brode struck spare back to back Freddie again doubled in the 6-7 then another open by Brode, Freddie led by 42 pins. Brode doubled the 8-9th but on this night it is Fred for the win as he doubled frames 9-10 in a to 50/189 margin. This would be hid 2nd ABTA Title, and he would take home $5,000 for 1st place, $900 for the 29 Squad Bonus, $100 ABTA shirt, $150 for Bowling Las Vegas January, and $300 for qualifying on Saturday, $150 for wearing an ABTA Shirt, and $150 for having 3 Event Bonus of April 28-May19, giving him a total of $6,600 for the win. POWERHOUSE VIDEO floored the Fab Four Harry Wong, Reggie Brown, Bruce Williams and Vernon Adams. HEINEKEN U.S.A. the All American Team played their only four regulars, Ramon Torres, Bruce Colbert, Larry Gray and Leonard Ruiz. Was it roll-off gitters? Equipment choice? Lane reading by Helen Keller? The scores were just not impressive. It was a rollercoaster ride. It was either strike, split, gutter or miss. Spares were scarce. There were 13 splits alone in the first game! Vernon Adams was his where Team Kegel was waiting. Kurt Arakaki, Kevin Yamauchi, Mark Curtis and Rick Easley had fought their way into a round and were READY. Maybe too ready! Let s take a look. Game One Kevin rolled a nice 232 for the Keglers. But Reggie and Vernon had an impressive 224/243. Final count? Kegel 767 Powerhouse Video 818. Game Two The come back kids for Kegel showed some previously hidden talent. Kurt 202, Mark 222 and Kevin 227 for a 809/705 victory. Game Three The moving game. MOVE UP or MOVE TO THE CAR! At last the pins were being mastered no splits for usual quiet, confident machine turning up a series. Game One went to POWERHOUSE VIDEO 725 to 665. Game Two was a turn around for the HEINEKEN U.S.A. henchmen winning 833 to s by Ramon 235, Bruce 222 and Leonard 202. So, they re 1 to 1. Game Three, the teams moved on to the third pre-dressed pair. Head pins hula d away from the balls leaving tough spares and impossible splits. POWERHOUSE VIDEO moved on to the next challenging team after defeating HEINEKEN U.S.A. 831 to 670. Powerhouse Video moved to lanes 23/24 POWERHOUSE VIDEO and even small strings of strikes for everybody. Kudos to Kegel s third game. The foursome had only 4 opens; (3 splits and a single pin miss) for an 805 team game. Powerhouse Video was punctured by 6 opens but the strings of strikes were longer. Twas the best match of the evening! Kegel s 805 was 40 pins short of the 845 touted by the Powerhouse Video four. Kegel ended up in 5th for $6,000. Jim was only 56 years old. Jim worked our phone order parts and supplies desk and almost every single bowling center mechanic, manager and owner throughout Southern California has spoken to Jim over the 25 years he was with Murrey International. Jim started at Murrey International back in 1987 and had quite the phone routine. Local centers would call Jim to place an order and end up with a side ache from laughing at his jokes and his impressions. Jim was also a master of voices as well. In recent years, Jim was working with Ken Del Conte of the Southern California based Del Conte bowling family doing voice overs and acting in Ken s plays and movies. With Jim you called to place an order but got the comedy show for free. He would take your order as Richard Nixon, John Wayne or some 90 year old man and keep a straight face during the entire phone conversation. 11 BOWLING NEWS CosmicBowling3.25X8.BowlNews 5/24/12 2:00 PM Page 1 11 WEST COVINA Here we are to update you on the last regular tournament of the JAT Farm Club. This tournament was held at Brunswick West Covina Lanes with 24 bowlers in attendance. These bowlers were met with a BWC custom oil pattern, called the DQ and luckily the bowlers kept their composure and I didn t have to apply that name to their scores. Also, I was quite surprised at the low turnout, given that this tournament was for double-jat points and the importance of those points for getting into the Invitational tournament this coming Sunday. For that reason, we decided to take the top 16 bowlers in to the second round, anyway. We thank the staff and management of Brunswick West Covina Lanes for the accommodations and the shot, letting the bowlers know that there is still more to learn. In our qualifying round we did muster up a few reportable scores. Bianca Taylor found a way to post in her five-game mix. Brittany Kolatzny posted a 231 game and Heather Morkes rounds out the qualifying high scores at 220. The leader after five games was Terrence Robinson, staying constant and ending at minus 56. Last to advance came in at minus 227. In our match play round the oil was the story, staying strong and consistent. Reportable scores during this round gave us Frank Aldrete with a 234, Taylor 232, Kolatzny 227, Michael Ma 226, and Treven Goldsmith 223. The big movements came from deep in the pack with Ashley Dunn making a three position jump, Matthew Zweig four positions and Ma a five position jump. Very good runs for these three bowlers, just coming up a little short of making the top five. A lot of JAT points though! The finals then started off with the 5th seed Morkes (-66) meeting 4th seed Taylor (-64). Morkes handily took this game , to advance on to meet the 3rd seed Spencer Van Rijsbergen (-63). In a close match, the veteran SVR (I like that) captured this game Now SVR had to meet another finals veteran in the 2nd seed position. Robinson (+36) started his move towards a second title with a win. Now Robinson faced off with Kolatzny (+44), who not only found herself for the first time as tournament leader, but was also making her first top appearance. Now one thing I can t teach the young bowlers (nor should I), is chivalry. Robinson jumped all over the first game and made a strong statement with the tournament high game He kept that thought in the mind of the rookie leader as she pressed to find the line that got her to this point. Robinson didn t let up and took the second match as well, Congratulations Terrence on your second JAT Farm Club title. You finally got your star. And Brittany, there will be plenty of more opportunities to come, don t despair you did everyone proud! Now before we get to the all important JAT point standings, did you read between the lines. All reportable qualifying scores, female. Females in match play, and three of the top five finalists. Ladies, JAT Farm Club is the place to be. In fact, there were nine ladies in attendance and they just love beating up on the gentlemen every once in awhile. Food for next year s thought. So now (including this tournament) here are the point standings: Robinson (5215), Goldsmith (4545), Tyler Salverda (4393), SVR (3715), Dunn 3700, BJ Harlan (3630), Kyle Duster (3560), John Struckman (3145), Aldrete (3090), Taylor (3050), Kolatzny (2490), Danny Martinez (2280), Zweig (2255), Karlie Loop (2110), Ma (1495), Stephanie Zavala (1410), James Knapp (1380), Matt Miller (1165), Chelsea Houston (1130), and Marguerite Evans (1098). Bowlers you have qualified and officially invited to attend the JAT Farm Club Invitational Tournament, this Sunday (6/3/2012), at Yorba Linda Bowl. If you have not already confirmed, please do so (YES or NO) as soon as possible. I can be reached at 310) , 626) , or via at David.Gordon@am.sony.com. Just as important, are the following alternates just waiting for that phone call to say they re in: Eric Mandzuch (1000), Morkes (980), Eric Torrence (960), Bert Dominick (915), Lareece Chambers (768), Jonnathein Chambers (743), Javier Zavala (715), Matthew Green (670), and Joseph Velick (670). Bowlers, you too can contact me and let me know your availability. The cost for the Invitational is a slightly higher $45. The format will be at minimum 10 games of match play (no qualifying round). A finals round and/or increase in the number of match play games is still being considered. Remember, this is also the last chance for someone to capture their first title and the last spot into our Tournament of Champions, being held the following week (6/10) at Keystone Lanes. Come on bowlers, talk to me. Hope to see all there. We welcomed back a lot of our college bowlers- it was great to see those familiar faces back home! A field of 17 took the lanes on a undetermined tournament shot that proved to be very low scoring. After qualifying, Gabriella Mayfield jumped right back into JAT action by leading the field at +0 while Bobby Hornacek was close on her heels at -32 trailed far by Jerome Jordan Jr. at -95. Low to qualify for the top-10 was Valerie Riggin at In the play-in round, Mark Curtis Jr. (8) swept past super-lefty Wesley Low Jr. (9) and while on the other side of the bracket Joshua Taylor (7) needed 3 games to eliminate Valerie Riggin (10) , , and In the quarterfinals, top-seeded Gabriella Mayfield lost her look and her match to Mark Curtis Jr , while Joseph Grondin (5) continued his good bowling knocking off Parker Brooks (4) , On the other side of the bracket, Bobby Hornacek (2) needed three to dismiss Joshua Taylor , , and Brian Hernandez (6) swept past the higher-seeded Jerome Jordan Jr. (3) , In the semifinals, Mark Curtis Jr. stayed lined up taking out Joseph Grondin , while Bobby Hornacek eliminated Brian Hernandez in two , In the championship match, the fresher oil condition seemed problematic for Mark Curtis Jr. as Bobby Hornacek struck his way to his first JAT Open Division title and Congratulations to Bobby on joining the ranks of JAT Champion! Note: The following bowlers are eligible for the Invitational this Sunday- Wesley Low Jr., Bobby Hornacek, Parker Brooks, Adam Dubia, Jerome Jordan Jr., Oscar Chan, Mark Curtis Jr., Luke Holley, Joshua Taylor, and Steven Mainer. Our alternates in order are Brian Hernandez (11), Joseph Grondin (12), and Josh Tajiri (13). In the event that one or more of the top-10 do not show up to bowl we will take available alternates in that order at 9:00 a.m.- if you are an alternate you are welcome to show up however you may/may not get a spot in the event! Our 2012 JAT Invitational will be this Sunday, June 3 rd - Top-20 Farm Club and Top-10 Open Division point leaders.
