1 July 19, 2012 BOWLING NEWS Page 1 Thursday July 19, 2012 California Bowling News P.O. Box 4160, Downey, CA Online: news@californiabowlingnews.com Office: (562) Fax: (562) Charlie Kinstler Named California U.S.B.C. Proprietor of the Year NORWALK Meet Charles Kinstler, the California Bowling Ass n. Proprietor of the Year, better known as Charlie. Born into a bowling family, he learned the game early. Started bowling at age 6 and keeping score for his parents Charlie Sr. and Shirley at age 10. He liked the way numbers added up as well as his bank account! After graduation from U.S.C. in the early 1980 s, it was time to get a real job. A chance conversation revealed that Del Rio Lanes in Downey was available. So in 1984 Charlie became a proprietor of 32 lanes. Automatic scoring was just becoming reliable and since Charlie loves tech-no innovations, Del Rio leaped into the electronic age. Soon to follow was a complete renovation from roof to artificial lanes. The bowlers loved it the senior scorekeepers were retired, and Downey had a new bowling home, meeting place and Tax Payer! He loved the challenge. In 1994, Keystone Lanes in nearly Norwalk, was sinking fast. Charlie rescued the 48 lane center and once again Charlie Kinstler dragged a dying center back to life was the year A.M.F. decided to close Forest Lanes. A midnight agreement added another link to a growing chain. Only 4 years passed before he made the next REALLY BIG decision. Cal Bowl in Lakewood and Bowlium in Montclair were added to the chain. Both needing complete over-hauls! In all cases, the employees kept their jobs, and the bowlers received a safe, clean, honest, bowling home to be proud of. He has contributed his time to the industry, such as President of the Southern Califorcontinued on page 4 Bowling News Honor Roll Name Score Date Center charles kenny canoga park bowl mike belair forest lanes bob lairsey harleys simi bowl william scott morris valley view lanes suzanne smith SANDS bowl sobeck banuelos mission hills bowl jason carrillo 817/ nancy carrillo chris groom SANDS bowl mike hollowell forest lanes alan mojado cal oaks bowl andrew stewart linbrook bowl corey willis tustin lanes cookie armenta keystone lanes donna trolinger keystone lanes nick williamson forest lanes laine curtis harleys simi bowl larry gray bowl-o-drome chris keating mission hills bowl karen reardon SANDS bowl don yingling SANDS bowl angel lutt harleys simi bowl ATTENTION ALL BOWLERS: bowl an honor score THIS WEEK & by Tuesday Noon YOUR NAME, SCORE, DATE & CENTER & you will be on the front page to: news@californiabowlingnews.com men: & 7-10 s Women: 298,299,300, 700+ & 7-10 s CHICAGO (July 15, 2012) Reigning U.S. Open champ Pete Weber and teammate Jason Belmonte started the championship match with six strikes and held on to edge Brunswick s Chris Loschetter and Sean Rash, , to win the Professional Bowlers Association Manufacturers Cup to conclude the GEICO PBA Summer Shootout at 10pin bowling lounge. The Baker doubles finals of the sixth annual PBA summer series aired Sunday on ESPN. Weber, Belmonte and teammate Osku Palermaa shared a $45,000 first prize. Despite their perfect start in the title match, Weber and Belmonte couldn t break away from the Brunswick duo. Rash and and Loschetter followed Rash s first-frame spare with their own string of five strikes to stay within 10 pins. After both teams converted singlepin spares in the seventh frame, Loschetter and Rash took the lead with back-toback strikes while Weber and Belmonte posted back-to-back single-pin spares. Doyle, a Junior Team USA member who became the youngest casher in U.S. Open history earlier this year at age 14, won 13 of his 16 matches and posted a 34-game total of 7,303 pins, including match play bonus pins, to lead qualifying in the High School Boys division of the Teen Masters at Freeway Lanes in suburban Cleveland. The other four boys who will advance to the Grand Championship finals along with Doyle are Jacob Ettinger, Lafaytee, Colo.; Greg Young, Viera, Fla., and Aaron Yuratovich, Olathe, Kan. Dunn, won U in Reno, U in New York Pete Weber, Jason Belmonte & Osku Palermaa Weber s seven-count spare in the 10th frame left the door open for Brunswick to lock up the title, but Loschetter left the split on his first shot in the final frame and failed to convert the spare. As soon as I let it go, I knew it was bad, Weber said of his shot in the 10th frame. The main thing I had to do was forget about it, concentrate on making the spare and then fill the frame with a strike. As I m getting older, I m getting better at putting bad shots behind me and not dwelling on them as much as I used to. I had to keep in the back of my mind that anything can happen, that it wasn t over, Weber added. (Loschetter) threw a bad shot but it was a split he could have picked up. Sometimes you d rather be lucky than good, and this was one of those days. The cruel but beautiful thing about being the top qualifier is that it can be a curse or a blessing because it s only one game that determines your fate, Belmonte said. You don t have the benefit of experiencing competition on the TV pair. Our strategy throughout the tournament was to pick the lane that we felt comfortable with and stick with it, and that s what helped us match up our equipment with this surface. Loschetter was understandably distraught over his 10th frame misfortune, but Rash refused to let his teammate take the blame. We made one bad shot as a group and it wasn t Chris that did it, Rash said. It was a team effort. We bowled great. We had a chance to win, but we were one shot short. After qualifying third for the finals, Rash and Loschetter Kamron Doyle & Ashley Dunn Pace Teen Masters Grand Championships Finalists New York City s Grand Central Terminal Hosts Finals Aug. 5-8 and now through 6 games on long pattern, 6 games on short patter, 6 games on mixed pairs, and 16 match play games on mixed pairs she is the leader headed back to New York to attempt a 3 peat! Dave won the $15,000 top prize by defeating two former Mini-Eliminator champions; senior bowler Cliff Connors and Alex Aguiar the 45 & under champion. The final shootout scores were Dave 210-Cliff 204 ($7,500) and Alex 195 ($5,000.) The final shootout was one of the most exciting in Mini- Eliminator history. Going into the final frame all 3 bowlers had a chance at the title. Dave, who averages 170, needed a strike in the tenth frame to secure the title and he came through by throwing a Brooklyn strike. Dave was the first handicap bowler ever to win the Mini in its 20 year history. The 2012 Summer Firecracker Classic attracted a crowd of over 500 entries. Over $60,000 in prize money was distributed to 125 bowlers. Darwin Wimer, Mesquite, NV hit the Strikes for Cash jackpot early in the week worth $2,300. Brunswick gave out their latest Nexus and C System high end balls which scored very well throughout the week. Scoring was moderate as Kegel maintained the lanes using their Abbey Road pattern. The week prior to the Firecracker Classic was the first annual Senior Mini-Eliminator at Texas Station. Pete Thomas, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, won the $10,000 top prize as he defeated 300 other senior bowlers. Finishing second was Bob Godden, Las Vegas, NV who earned $5,000 and third place went to super senior bowler Darwin Wimer, Mesquite, NV taking home $2,500. For complete results of the 2012 Senior Mini-Eliminator and Firecracker Classic please visit Dates for the winter Mini-Eliminators will be announced shortly. Nick Smith, Brunswick Rep, Alex Aguiar, Dave McIntyre, & Cliff Connors. PETE THOMAS WINS $10,000 AT THE SENIOR MINI-ELIMINATOR Las Vegas Pete Thomas, who resides in Oklahoma, won the 2012 Summer Senior Mini-Eliminator at Texas Station in Las Vegas. Pete shot a 209 to defeat second place finisher, Bob Godden, Las Vegas, NV by 5 pins. Pete earned $10,000 for his victory while Bob earned $5,000. Finishing third was Darwin Wimer, Mesquite, NV who shot 200 worth $2,500. The final shootout was exciting as the three division champions competed in a 1 game shootout to determine the $10,000 winner. Bob, who won the handicap division, was getting 30 pins in handicap but missed three 10 pins in the first 5 frames to eliminate his advantage. Pete, the division champion, bowled a clean game which was enough for the victory. Darwin, who won the super senior division, was always a double away from taking the lead and winning the title. The match kept all of the spectators in suspense the entire match. The first annual Senior Mini was a resounding success as over 300 entries were recorded with bowlers traveling as far as Australia and Germany to compete. More than 60 bowlers received a check from the $40,000 prize fund. Brunswick also distributed their latest high end balls and ran their famous Practice Range throughout the tournament. Two sweepers were run with both champions earning $1,000. Tony Pascua, from the division, won the Sunday sweeper and Henry Murphy, a handicap bowler from Henderson, NV won the Monday sweeper. Over 100 entries were recorded in the two sweepers which paid out almost $5,000. Plans are already underway for a winter version of the Senior Mini-Eliminator. Special thanks to our sponsors; Brunswick Bowling and Texas Station for their financial support. For complete results of the 5-day event please visit com. JIMMY SCHMITZER Just Misses Another 900! by Frank Weiler NORCO Déjà vu all over again, nearly. On April 20, 2012, Jimmy Schmitzer bowled 900. Just days ago he nearly did it again. Yes, Jimmy came within four strikes of another triperfecto. While subbing in Patty s Match Point League at Classic Lanes, Jimmy bowled 846 ( ). But for four nine counts, Mr. Schmitzer would have had another 900. But for three ten pins and an eight pin, Mr. Schmitzer would have had another 900. Guess what? I believe Jimmy Schmitzer will roll another 900, and soon. Move over Robert Mushtare. I believe Jimmy will score 900 again for two reasons. First, his two handed release generates astonishing revolutions. Second, his approach to the foul line is picture perfect. While most good two handers possess the revolutionary edge, I know of no other two hander besides Jimmy with an approach smooth enough to threaten for 900, everytime out of the gate. His approach is the smoothest of any two hander I ve seen, including Belmo and Osku. While Belmo, Osku and every other two hander I ve seen expend a great deal of effort and energy to deliver a bowling ball, Jimmy doesn t. They are herky-jerky to the line while he is smooth. I believe Jimmy s flowing motion to the line make him more consistent. This consistency means more good shots, more strikes and higher scores. Jimmy s combination of accuracy and revolutions make him a strike threat on every shot. With the odds in his favor on every shot, Jimmy is a serious threat for 900 every time out of the gate. When I watch Jimmy bowl I think of quicksilver. He flows to the line. He is even, uniform and consistent to the line. Jimmy s steps are evenly spaced, uniformly placed and consistently paced. Everything is the where it ought to be, the way it ought to be and when it ought to be. Style plus substance equals results. Jimmy used his 900 ball, the Storm Virtual Gravity Nano, to roll his 846. Like most of his bowling balls, the Nano is drilled neutral. That is, the pin and center of gravity (CG) are in a straight line, with the pin between the fingers. Sometimes the pin is above the fingers, sometimes below. Jimmy and his family would like to thank everyone who has been supportive since he bowled 900. He is especially thankful to Classic Lanes, Storm Bowling Products, the Citrus Belt Association and the BOWLING NEWS. Last Weeks Solution

3 July 19, 2012 BOWLING NEWS Page 3 NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWS DEAF TRAVEL LEAGUE MEETS AT NOON AUG. 26 AT KEYSTONE by Connie Marchione NORWALK Got this notification from So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League Secretary treasurer Bob Taylor about the date, time and place of the deaf traveling league s 53rd season kick-off meeting. For all present and past members and also deaf newcomers interested to bowl in a scratch traveling league, get ready to mark your calendar. Taylor and Traveling league President Ed Abakumoff had agreed on the date of the 53rd season meeting to be Sunday August 26 and the time to be at Noon. The place is the same as past meetings, Keystone Lanes in Norwalk. Traveling League Vice President Sharon Caldwell is proceeding to contact all members about this meeting by s and mailing. So watch for that. Also Taylor and Abakumoff said, the number of bowlers present at this August 26 meeting will determine the number of teams to start the 53rd season at noon Sunday September 9 at Keystone Lanes. The league had 8 teams of trios in its 52nd year. It is hopeful that more than 24 bowlers will show up at the meeting to make up 8 teams. So it is important if any of the members for any reason, could not make the all-important August 26th meeting and still want to bowl in this Traveling league, must let any of the three officers, Abakumoff, Caldwell or Taylor know in advance before Aug. 26 to assure you of a spot on a team. This also applies to newcomers and returnees too. So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League had a long history as being the first ever in ABC history as all deaf bowlers traveling League established and the oldest deaf league out in West Coast still running for its 53rd year. Rash became the fans choice in the bowling category thanks to a Tour season in which the 29-year-old right-hander won the season-ending PBA Tournament of Champions for his only title, but had six championship round finishes, including third place in the PBA World Championship. Qualifying for a record five consecutive TV finals during the World Series of Bowling helped the Alaska native dominate PBA Tour stats where he finished first in average, points and earnings. His Tournament of Champions win was the fifth Tour title of his career. This is very special because it s an award voted on by the fans bowling fans and sports fans, said Rash, who now makes his home in the Chicago suburb of Montgomery, Ill. The fans are why we do what we do they re why I get up in the morning. Winning the Tournament of Champions, Player of the Year, getting married (to wife Sara) and winning the ESPY has made it just an unbelievable year, Rash added. Even though I had a frustrating start to the season, I had a lot of support from my family, fans, friends and Brunswick and without them I couldn t have done it. Joining Rash at the ceremonies were fellow ESPY candidates Jason Belmonte and Mike Fagan who also were finalists for the PBA Player of the Year crown which was announced on pba.com s Xtra Frame online bowling channel in May. During the season Belmonte, who won the ESPY in 2011, won three titles and had seven top five finishes. Fagan qualified for TV shows in all four majors winning the USBC Masters, finished second in the U.S. Open, fourth in the Tournament of Champions and 12th in the PBA World Championship. He also won an international PBA Tour title. ESPY Award candidates are selected by ESPN staff for a variety of sports categories and special moments in athletic competition. In the second round, eliminated were Marife Catalasan, Danny Eguilos, Otabek Umarov, Cezar Marcella, Amy Galsim, Art Windsor, Chontida Athiprayon, and Lucia Collier. They received checks of $270 each. In the 3rd round of match play eliminated were Vuong Do, Fred Go, Gerry Manalo, and Cary Fishman. They received checks of $400 each. This would get us down to the final five bowlers. The weekly horses are paying a low of $50 (Victor Fabian) to a high of $194 (Jamescart Alarcio). In this round we saw Victor Fabian (20th seed) bowling Don Quitangon (13th seed). We would see another match where it was close to the end as both bowlers bowled decent but it was Victor who held on to win with a 225 to 218 and advance another round. In the other match we saw Ted Villaroman (8th seed) bowling Jamescart Alarcio (9th seed). In this match it was another battle but Ted would win 222 to James 191 and advance to the next round. Jamescart and Don finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $800 each. Our semi-final match was set, and would pit the 20 and 8 seeds against each other. In the weekly horses we would see Teddy paying $91 and Victor paying $50 if they would win their match. This was another close match during the semis. Each bowler started out with opens to begin the match. It was Victor who got the first double in the 2nd and 3rd frames but Teddy came back with his double in the 5th and 6th frames. Neither bowler was able to jump out to a big lead. It was Teddy who would finish first and he would finish the 10th frame with a solid 10 pin costing him a double. He got a spare and strike to finish with a 240. Up came Victor, and he was up by 5 pins going into the 10th frame and only needed good count and a spare, but he start out with a 6 count, and thus needed the spare and a strike to win the match. He got his spare and came up needing a strike and that he did to finish with a 188/241 to 196/240 and advance to the championship match. Finishing in third place was Ted Villaroman this week for $2,000. For those lucky investors that had Victor as a horse, he paid $50. Ted surely could have won that exciting match. Great Bowling! The title game is set and it would be Victor Fabian against the top qualifier Matt Garcia. Matt elected to have Victor start the match first. Victor would start out with a spare, while Matt started out with an open and then got a double. While Victor would continue to get marks, it was Matt who had back-to-back opens in the 4th and 5th frames and thus Victor was up by 50 pins at that point. An open by Victor in the 6th and a 4 bagger by Matt in the 6th thru 9th frames brought us to a close match entering the 10th frame. Matt came up in the 10th frame needing the first strike to force Victor into getting a strike on his first ball. But he left the 10 pin and that meant all Victor would need was a mark in the 10th frame. Matt finished out with a spare and nine count in the 10th. Victor came up and left the 5 pin on his first ball, which meant if he picked it up he would take home the title. He got the spare and 8 count to finish with a 182/235 to 203/229 and take home $8,000 for first place, $4,400 for Cash and Carry, $100 for wearing an ABTA shirt, $400 in pre-pay, and $900 in squad bonus for a total of $13,800. Finishing in 2nd place for $4,000 was Matt Garcia, who bowled so well Champion Victor Fabian is from Long Beach and used a Roto Grip Cell drilled at Cal Bowl. ABT THe Release by Robert Ellison SAN DIEGO This weeks tip is one of the most crucial aspects of the bowling game. It s important to have the right release of the ball for successful and high scores. The ball should be released consistently - shot after shot. A release point is a technique that a bowler needs to incorporate into their shot. What is a release point? This is when the thumb comes out of the ball, followed by the fingers- onto the lanes. There are many thumbless bowlers such as Belomante and Suski, the top two PBA bowlers who use this technique. Top bowlers can control balls by changing the position of the hand, ie. maximum hook, medium hook, or less hook. By utilizing the hand position on various lane patterns- this will increase your versitility on the lanes. PBA bowlers use speed (walking slow or fast), spin (amount of hook generated on ball), and change of hand position (to get the ball to react when and how they want it. One of the top PBA bowlers who utilizes hand position control is Norm Duke. He can create maximum hook, or roll endover-end which creates a straighter shot. What is an ideal release? The release of the ball is delivered when the bowling ball is under the hand, and fingers are in 6 to 7 o clock position. The thumb immediately comes out of the ball, and the fingers hold the ball until it is released. The fingers upon holding the ball remain in 6 to 7 o clock and turns to 3 o clock position (at same time thumb is at the 12 o clock position). If the fingers go beyond the 3 o clock and turn into the noon or eleven position- this creates more spin than roll on the ball. One of the techniques John Jowdy uses is the ring-finger lead drill. This is a method where one stays under the ball and still maintains free armswing. John states all movement is intiated from the hand during the lowest and heaviest part of the swing, thus requiring no muscle tension. Once you get your ball on the top of the armswing- then the ring finger will precede the middle finger on the down swing (until the release point). Once the ball reaches the release point - ring finger is at the 9 or 10 o clock position. The thumb immediately comes out of the ball, and the weight of ball is onto the fingers. The fingers then rotate from bottom to 3 o clock position. Its important to focus and practice the release of the ball. Practice is key to consistency in the game; and once you work on making your bowling release as smooth as can be, your scores will improve. Until next time- high scoring and good bowling!

ENTRY BLANK FOR EITHER MEN OR WOMEN California Bowling Writers Approve Changes Two Men Join the Board by Mary Lynly NORWALK President Joan Romeo presided over the California Bowling Writers board meeting held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on June 8, Her report to the board began with, It s time for change; change is inevitable; change may be challenging but change is good. She challenged us to motivate our members, set a good example and give them a reason to be a part of this great organization. Among reports given, Jackie Wyckoff presented the legislation containing sweeping changes to the CBW bylaws aimed at seeking 501 C3 status. Of note: Terms of office will now be three years; Membership categories were defined; Life Members will be allowed Voice and a vote at board meetings with the permission of the president; The Executive Secretary will be a hired position and she will serve one year, renewable yearly and have full voice and vote at all meetings. Directors, officers and other authorized volunteers, employees or agents shall be indemnified against claims for personal and individual liability arising in connection with their positions or service on behalf of the association to the full extent permitted by law. Secretary Donna Dillard announced that we gained 14 new members this year bringing our total to 92 and our membership drive garnered additional members during the weekend. New this past year was a specially designed Happy Birthday card sent to members. Jane Bailey chaired this special committee and sent 62 greetings to members. Great accolades went to our CBW website redesigned by our webmaster Kathy Watson. This was a BIG task and a great job hats off to Kathy. Check it out. Debbie Haggerty appealed to those present to answer the call for youth support. Think about giving some time to coach or help with a youth program. Debbie has started a new program in her center in Rocklin and another one in has been started in Elk Grove by Kris Netherton. She says it is up to each one of us to donate some time either coaching or mentoring youth. Mary Lynly reported on the successful 2011 Phone Card charity and raising over $8,000 for phone cards. With the help of the ladies at YMCA 29 Palms, California and TREA The Retired Enlisted Association, they sent 685 cards to all branches of the service. Most gratifying about our charity this year is the heart warming letters we have received from wives and service men and women thanking us for this wonderful little card. The total raised for this effort since inception..$41,250.35! Barbara Metzinger noted our continued maintenance of the California WBA display at the National Bowling Stadium and with the 20 Million dollar renovation of the stadium we may have some concern. Barbara and Mary Lynly among many friends of Joan Feinblum went to Arlington, TX to be a part of her induction into the National Bowling Hall of Fame a special evening. CBW will be keeping a calendar of events with dates and places and will be distributed through the Connection, our website and our Facebook site. It was felt that there are many dates for many events but we rarely see them in one place! Paula Vidad will chair this. Jackie Wyckoff, Editor of our award-winning InfoLink reported on our outstanding publication and plans to expand and collaborate with CUSBC in the future. Look for change! Frank Weiler of San Bernardino and Dennis Ganduglia of Rohnert Park will join the California Bowling Writers board of directors. 9 July 19, 2012 BOWLING NEWS Page 9 CAL BOWL BOWLING REPORT 2500 E. Carson St., Lakewood, CA (562) Rare Bowling Memorabilia Collection to be Auctioned on EBay August 7-11 DALLAS Sports Memorabilia Auctions are common; but one featuring exclusively Bowling items is rare. August 7-11, 2012, one of the best collections in the world will go up for bid on EBay. Former pro bowler, bowling proprietor, and Dallas Entrepreneur Chuck Lande is the organizer of this historical event. The user ID on EBay will be: BowlingCollection. More than 100 items will be sold to the highest bidders. The auction items come from a variety of sources, and include several vintage, one of a kind pieces that are owned by Mr. Lande. The energetic Lande has been collecting vintage bowling memorabilia as a hobby for over 20 years; and for the first time, he has decided to sell part of his extensive collection that includes some of the rarest items in the sport s storied history. Several of the rare pieces were on display in my office at the Bowlarama, but now that I no longer own a bowling center, I just thought it was time to put the key pieces up for bid so that other collectors can add to their private collections. But I also wanted to do something nice for the bowling industry, so I have decided to donate 10% of the proceeds from the auction to the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame in Arlington, Texas, said Lande. Among the collection are items dating back more than 100 years. Some are one-of-a-kind museum quality; like a circa 1890 wooden bowling ball and Brunswick leather Carry Case; a very rare 10k gold ABC 300 game award given to Hall of Famer Frank Caruana for his back-to-back 300 games in 1924; one of only 12 issued that year by the American Bowling Congress; and an autographed bowling pin and souvenir program from the 1949 BPAA All Star Tournament. Another item that may pique interest from baseball collectors is a one-of-a-kind autographed photo of Bowling Legend Don Carter with Baseball Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Stan Musial what did they have in common? They all owned bowling centers when the photo was taken in Auctions of other sports items are quite common; but bowling memorabilia is more difficult to acquire compared to sports items in Football or Baseball, making them a great long term investment and a tremendous value. Similar auctions in those sports with equal items would easily net six figures. This auction has rare items that may bring big bucks, but it also contains items anyone can afford; like bowling magazines dating from 1930 s to the 1960 s. There are no minimum opening bids or reserved prices in the Bowling Auction; some items may go for a few dollars, and others for thousands; but ALL items will go to the respective high bidders regardless of the selling price. Anyone interested in consigning additional vintage bowling items to this auction; or if you would like an ed Auction Catalog containing descriptions and high resolution photos, please contact chucklande300@hotmail.com. Chuck Pezzano Dean of Bowling Writers, PBA & USBC Hall of Fame All sports have long seasons. Bowling has had almost endless schedules, and for more than a hundred years league players rolled 36 weeks or more, then usually followed up with short circuits of 10 to 12 weeks. That is a long time to tie up a person s time and the responsibility for participation fees whether you roll or not. A larger problem was to keep competitive interest for such a long stretch. What started as standard, five persons to a team, three games, wins or losses to determine the standings. But sometimes the leagues were runaways, and needed some spicing. Bowling met the challenges, establishing two, three and four player teams, split schedules with two half schedule winners meeting for the title, and dozens of point systems, with various bonus awards for team game and team series totals and all sorts of points for individual against individual and also bonus scores. They all helped change the game but the most innovative change came with the adoption of position round competitiion, also known as bumper rounds. Adopted more than 50 years ago the format became a standard part of bowling and most major tournaments. Position rounds are simple, instead of a set schedule with predetermined opponents, the teams or individuals are going against each other based on standings. First place team meets second, third faces fourth and so on down the line. The bumper meetings can be scheduled as many times as desired and some leagues run their entire schedules based on position pairings. It keeps many leagues and tournaments as competitive as possible. Every match means something most of the time and since each higher position receives a larger prize, there usually is something at stake. Every sport would benefit from position rounds whether it is a battle for a title or a clash for a playoff spot. There wouldn t be scoreboard watching because your nearest opponent would be your opponent. Sure, there would be some hasty scheduling at times as the standings change and there also would have to be awards as the lower teams have extra incentive to play well for their pride, their fans and a little bonus cash. Position rounds have helped speed up the game and properly applied could enhance the competitive conclusion of any sport. Just apply the position round to two of the world s greatest sports, baseball and football in the past five years, and it is easy to see the benefits. TV has caused great changes in bowling. For instance, in a major tourney in Steve Nagy and Graz Castellano tied for the 16th and last finalist spot. They rolled a six game rolloff. Now, because of TV that rolloff would be a mere two frames or even a single ball. All sports seem to be making the long slates longer and longer. In order to maintain as much interest as possible as long as possible, position rounds should be studied. They helped make bowling a year round sport. TEEN MASTERS continued from page 1 match in the Boys 14-Under division. Adel Wahner of Las Cruces, N.Y., won the Girls 14-Under title, defeating Bailey Palmer of Ottumwa, Iowa, , The Teen Masters, originated by Killer B Promotions founder Gary Beck, is a unique youth tournament, testing player skills on a combination of long- and short-oiled lane conditions as well as bowling equipment limitations which require players to make adjustments in their techniques rather than relying on ball technology. Each competitor will be allowed to use two Ebonite bowling balls. Bailey Palmer, Ottumwa, Iowa, , Phone Cards for the Troops Reminder There is a lot of hype about the Wounded Warriors and the tremendous support they are getting here at home - and this is a good thing but our Phone Cards for the Troops benefit the warriors who are still fighting to preserve our freedom and that of people in countries dominated by tyrants and terrorists. The California Bowling Writers will embark on their 8 th year of raising funds for phone cards that are sent to the men and women in the military in Afghanistan and Iraq. We have raised nearly $50,000 to provide this luxury for our troops who endure tremendous heat, none of the comforts of home and a shower only now and then if they re lucky. They spend each day wondering if it will be their last, keeping an eye out for a snipers or roadside bombs, and enduring the loss of friends they have bonded with in their home away from home. Once again, we ask for your support. Help us take care of those men and women who are still in harms way. You can donate in honor of, or in memory of someone and you can also send us the address of someone you know overseas and we will send a care package with phone card directly to them. This last year we received wonderful letters from the wives of men serving and they told us how important it was to be able to call and talk to their wives and children and how the kids looked forward to talking to mom or dad. Send donations to: California Bowling Writers Tina Martin, Treasurer 57 Shields Lane Novato, California For more information check out our website
