Oil Pattern Used Mini Eliminator Office: Fax: Mika Koivuniemi Voted Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year SEATTLE (May 5, 2011) Finland s Mika Koivuniemi, who won the richest first prize in Professional Bowlers Association history and became the first player ever to reach the television finals in all four PBA major championships in a single season, has been selected as PBA Player of the Year. Koivuniemi, who won the $250,000 first prize in the $1 million PBA Tournament of Champions, also finished second in the U.S. Open, third in the Bayer USBC Masters and sixth in the PBA World SEATTLE Jurek, who also won the Steve Nagy Sportsmanship Award in 2006, also was an overwhelming choice. His most visible act of sportsmanship came during the title match of the Bayer USBC Masters where he was top qualifier, and was on the verge of losing to first-time champion Tom Hess of Urbandale, Iowa. Jurek approached Hess, who had broken down in Scott Norton Wins Harry Golden Rookie of the Year Award California attorney wins first Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour title in Pepsi Chameleon Championship SEATTLE Scott Norton, a 29-year-old practicing attorney from Costa Mesa, Calif., has been selected as Professional Bowlers Association Harry Golden Rookie of the Year at the conclusion of the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season Winning his first career PBA Tour title in the fourth tournament of the season helped Norton win the honor. The son of Professional Women s Bowling Association Hall of Famer Virginia Norton defeated Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., , to win his title during the PBA World Series of Bowling at South Point Lanes in Las Vegas. I didn t know what to expect heading into the season, said the former youth and collegiate bowling star. Just competing on the Tour was the realization of a dream I have had since I started bowling. My first goal was to be competitive, but to win so soon was beyond my expectations. Norton s other top finishes during the season were 10th in GEICO Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship, 11th in the Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open and 16th in the Dick Weber PBA Playoffs. He earned an exemption to bowl full-time on the PBA Tour in by winning the 2009 PBA Regional Players Invitational. He finished 18th on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour competition points list and 33rd on the average list with a averaged for 221 games. Norton was a runaway choice for Rookie of the Year honors. In voting among his peers, he received 445 votes. No other player received more than 15 votes. Other vote-getters included Andy Patterson, Tyler, Texas; John Szczerbinski, North Tonawanda, N.Y.; Mika Koivuniemi Jack Jurek Wins Steve Nagy Sportsmanship Award Jack Jurek tears under the emotion of his victory, and helped him calm down enough to finish the match. Sportsmanship is one of the most important aspects of sports. The Steve Nagy PBA Sportsmanship Award, named after the bowler of the same name, is voted on by the PBA Tour pros, and most winners comment on the honor they feel to receive this award from their peers. Championship on his way to winning the PBA Tour earnings title with $330,040 the third-highest total in PBA Tour history. The 44-year-old righthander, who also won Player of the Year honors for , was the Tour s average leader with a average for 292 games bowled. Koivuniemi, who lives in Hartland, Mich., and Venezuela s Amleto Monacelli (1989 and 1990) are the only international players who have won PBA Player of the Year honors. Koivuniemi received 334 votes from his peers, easily out-distancing runner-up Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas (63) and Bill O Neill of Southampton, Pa. (61). It s really a great honor, Koivuniemi said. There are only 10 players who had won Player of the Year more than once, and to be the 11th member of that group is really special. It was an almost perfect season for me, he added. Qualifying for TV for all four majors is a huge deal. No one had ever done that before, and to win the Tournament of Champions? NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWS by Connie Marchione DEAF FRANK GALLO ROLLED 300 IN PBA SENIOR SUN BOWL IN THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA THE VILLAGES, FL Frank Gallo, JR a deaf member of PBA for more than 3 decades, quickly made up for his prior poor showing in the opening event of 2011 PBA Senior Tour, PBA Don Carter Open at Carter Family Bowl in Winter Gardens, FL. There in the sold out 120 seniors event, he did poorly at the beginning 1st round qualifying 6 game on April 18. In his next 6 games he improved a bit up 6 places and finally caught on with 1230 on his final 6 games. Gallo, Newport News, VA finished in 92nd place with 3412 (189 ave.) for 18 games. The last 6 games bolstered Gallo s confidence for the following week s event on the 2001 PBA Senior Tour, PBA Senior Sun Bowl in the Villages at Spanish Springs Lanes. There on April 24 with 148 other seniors, Gallo started well with 1753 for his first 8 games (219 ave,) placing in 24th tied with two other seniors. On the next morning final qualifying 8 games Gallo started perfectly with a 300 game and finished with a 1773 for the day. His 16 games total of 3526 (220 ave.) put him up to 9th place. That was good for one bye for the 9th to 16th placers in the best 3 of 5 match plays. The 1st to 8th place qualifiers got two byes in the match plays. The 1st round match plays started off with the 17th to 32nd places qualifiers and Gallo with his bye to start in the 2nd round, had to wait for his opponent, one of the 8 winners from this 1st round. Gallo faced Brian Brazeau, Ocala, FL who is fully warmed up from his 3-0 in his first round matches. In the first match game Gallo struggled with a 172 losing to Brazeau s 211. Gallo bounced back in game 2 with a 256 to Brazeau s 216 but struggled again in game 3 with 177 losing to Brazeau s 225. Game 4 made it 2-2 tie when Gallo again bounced back with a win In final game 5, Brazeau with a string of strikes ended Gallo s hopes with a win. The tournament was won by Harry Sullins, Chesterfield, MI who beat Hall of Famer Walter R. Williams JR for the title and $7,500. Frank Gallo, JR. got $1,100 for his 2nd round loss. It was not known if Gallo got a $100 bonus for his 300 game. This writer texted Congratulations on the 300 to his friend, Frank who responded by . Gallo said, finally a long time his 8th 300 in PBA since the last one in Also a surprise he had 814 last year in March. Good luck to Frank Gallo, Jr. in the May 1 PBA Senior Miller High Life Classic at George Pappas Victory Bowl in Mooresville, NC. But in there Gallo could not keep in pace with other high scoring seniors placing 62nd with 1695 in his first 6 qualifying games. Walter R. Williams, Jr. led first round with 2025 (253 average for 8 games). In the next day s 8 games Gallo could not do better with his 1687 and dropped to 63rd place with 3392 total (212 ave.). Williams, Jr. led with 3899 total (243 ave. for 16 games) and it took 3565 (222 ave.) for 32nd place to make the match plays. The 148 entries event paid down to $900 for 49th place but Gallo was as one of the 8 super-seniors (age 60 and over) who collected $700 each. MARK FISSER HITS 300 & 802 IN EBONITE INVITATIONAL AT DEL RIO DOWNEY CONGRATULATIONS to Mark Fisser who got two honor scores last April 25 when he rolled for 802 in the tough Ebonite Invitational League at Del Rio Lanes. This is good for Mark to bowl in a tough league like this one. This writer is happy for him to finally hit two honor scores because the last ones he hit was a heartbreaker being in an unsanctioned league. That was a long time ago and as this writer knew they were supposed to be his 20th career 300 and 4th 800. Since that time none was reported to me till I read in the last week s Bowling News. I d like to add a couple and also comment. El Monte Recreation was a 10 lane center on Garvey, just west of Rosemead Blvd. The proprietors were a very nice family by the last name of Kistler. Russ the father, Don the son, and their spouses worked the center which also had a small bar and a snack bar with about 6 stools. I started keeping score for my father in the early 50 s and used to make a dime a bowler. A buck for three hours of sitting. Open play cost 35 cents, so I almost earned enough to bowl a series. There was one great guy named Ted Devine who always tipped me a dollar. How could I ever forget his name? There were no automatic pinsetters and the bowlers used to tip the guys setting pins by throwing quarters down the gutters or putting a dollar in the thumb hole and rolling it down the gutter. The ball returns were all above ground and the ball racks were a nuisance. There were no hand driers, only a big mound of white chalk and a towel attached to the ball return. But there were alot of great people who treated a youngster with respect. I think that s what got me involved so much with bowling. I bowled my first league there in 1956 and averaged 153. I m not sure when it closed, but I went back later and still couldn t score there. The last time I went by there the building was used as a paint store. La Puente Lanes was one of the new modern 32 lane centers to open in 1959 and eventually close in It was there that got to meet my idol from the 1950 s championship bowling show from Chicago: Billy Myers. He was a lefty like me and I ll never forget asking him about using a fingertip. In about 1961 he asked me if I wanted to work the desk and except for a couple of years in the Army, I have been working part or full time ever since. I currently work at Brunswick West Covina Lanes. Thank you Billy. I also made many friends there, but too many to list. I met my wife Charlene there and we have been married for 37 years. One of the leagues bowling at West Covina (Flamingo Vikings) started there in the 70 s. and was named by merging two drinking leagues the Flamingos (a bar in La Puente) and the Vegas Vikings (the bar at La Puente Lanes was the Viking Room). Losing a bowling center is like losing an old friend. Things may change, but the memories are always there. We named her Amanda. She was feisty, and strong, and continues to be so. She prominently displayed her lefthandness at an early age, and became quite interested in sports. Her step-father, Jack Graves and I ( Jo Ann Graves) bowled weekly in what was known as Blue Chip Stamp bowling. So, every week, she and her siblings were at the lanes. She took no interest in bowling at that time. She excelled in soccer, field hockey, softball, and volleyball. I finally talked her into bowling with Mom on a league, and the spirit grew. Her natural ability took over. She became a real super charger on the lanes. She continues to break the 600 series, has rolled a 299, and 719 series. Her bowling grandmothers would have been proud of her, but as her Mother, I am super proud. So, I guess it was no real surprise to know that she captured 1st place in the Annual Friendship Tournament at AMF Eagle Lanes, San Marcos, for the San Diego 600 Club October 3, 2010, with scores of 224, 235, 189 and 189 with a scratch series of 837, and a handicap series of 945. Her closest competitor was Char Shenefield with a 672 scratch and 888 handicap series. Only 20 pins away was 3rd place finisher, Adrienne Rodriguez. It was a great tournament, and we re looking forward to holding this annual tournament once again on October, 2, 2011, at Parkway Bowl in El Cajon, CA. We had a decent shot for the tournament making the cut scores of +87 for the men and +61 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (2 men and 1 female) were Pablo Castro (+75) and Lonzell Burnett (+72) and for the women it was Susan Ebilane (+42). Remember Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 60 bowlers making it to the semi-finals. For all qualifying squads, our top qualifier for the Men was Minh Dang with a +223, and for the women it was Brenda Pugh with a Each of them will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed overall draws the Match Series, and this time it was worth $1330. The top seed Dang, drew a 457. We had two bowlers that bowled this score during qualifying, they were BhethAlcayde, and Christina Chueng, each will get $665. At our next event we will estimate the Match Series at $350. For the qualifying we had Dillon Vargas outlast the field and go for the pot of $1,10. He missed on the first shot and received consolation of $50. We will have a carry-over of $1,200 at Valley View. We had a total of $1,590 paid out in doubles and 23 paid spots with low to cash of In the semis we saw Brad LeCount, lead the field with a +149 to sit out and bowl for the title this week. Coming in second was Minh Dang with a +109 to sit out the first round. It took a +66 for the men and for the women it took a +19, with Cezar Marcella and Mark O Donnel tying at +66 and had a 9th and 10th frame roll-off to determine who would advance into our Match Play finals. It was Cezar who would win that roll-off. Our top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $1,610, and our top seed drew a 151. After a review of all the scores bowled, we had no bowlers who shot that score. We will estimate the new pot at $3,300 next week at Valley View. This week we had six new bowlers join us. Let us welcome these new bowlers to the club; Jeff Wu, Christy Abshire, Brandon Directo, Joseph Riggs, Art Bustamonte, and Epraim Corpus. This would bring us to our Match Play finals. In the first round the seven losers were Susan Ebilane, Vuong Do, Fel Garcia, Roger Vasquez, Deborah Sanders, Cezar Marcella, and Allen Gutierrez. They received checks of $115 each. In the second round, the losers Anthony Dancel, Brandon Directo, Arnold Trias, and Minh Dang received checks of $125 each. This would get us down to the final five bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $31 (Andrew Lung) to a high of $114 (Sonia Coronado) depending on who would win. In this round we saw Andrew Lung (3rd seed) bowling Sonia Coronado (15th seed). In this match, Andrew with his big cheering section would get the better of Sonia in a 273 to 181 finish. In the other match we saw Alpine Tran (5th seed) bowling Holden Au (12th seed). In this match, Alpine outdo Holden and finish with a 206 to 195 and take the victory. Holden and Sonia finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $135 each. Our semi-final match was all set now, and it would be bowled on Lanes 29 and 30 this week and pit our 5th seed against our 3rd seed. In our horses this week we would see Andrew paying $31 and Alpine paying $50 if they win their match. In a close match that would go down to the tenth frame. We would see Andrew finish with a 203/241 to a 192/231 to advance. That would give Andrew the victory and for those lucky investors that had him as a horse, he paid $31. Alpine finished 3rd and received $225. The title game was set and bowled on Lanes 27 and 28 this week. Brad being the top seed elected to lead off the match. Brad would open up in the first frame while we would Lung is the Man at Linbrook with 3rd ABTA Title (L R) Giang Huynh, Alpine Tran 3rd, Brandon Directo 4th, Andrew Lung (champ) $2,900, his #1 fan and ABTA Member Linda Seto, Brad Le Count (runner up), Brian Moore ABTA Director, Henry Hoang, along with the Champs sisters Angela and Cecilia (all are ABTA regulars). see Andrew start out with three strikes to jump out to a big lead. Andrew would have enough, and esp that Brad could not carry in the hole~~ and never look back on this match as he would go on to finish with a 215/253 to 191/225 to take home his third ABTA title. Andrew would take home $1,000 for 1st place, $1,700 Cash and Carry, $100 for wearing an ABTA Shirt, and $100 for using an 900 Global ball giving him a total of $2,900 for the win. Have a great week and remember it s Summer League sign-up time. BRENT BRINGS DOWN THE CURTAIN IN THE 590 by Roberta McNaught Terry Brent must have thought it was sweeps instead of final day of league play in the 590 Classic. He posted games of 224, 233, 270, and 256 for a fabulous 983 series. He needed all of those pins for his team to move from 4th place to 3rd. The real nail biter was between 1st and 2nd place teams. The match came down to the 10th frame of the last game on the last ball. Norm Walker left the tricky 2, 4, 5 and had to convert it in order to win the 2 points for the game. Convert it he did and, along with team mates, Marie Barbush and Alan Bloom, won the league by a mere 1 1/2 points. You should have been there folks. The 900 Club consisted of Willy Bordenave 267/963, Shawn StAndre 245/916, Norm Walker 255/905, and Alan Bloom 236/900.
