(May 24, 2011) Professional Bowlers Association legend Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., won the PBA Senior Mark Roth Allentown Open Tuesday for his first tour win in more than a year. Williams defeated 2009 Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, , in the championship match at Playdrome Rose Bowl for his first senior title of the season and second of his Senior Tour career. Williams left little doubt of the outcome by opening the championship match with eight consecutive strikes before leaving a 10 pin in the ninth frame. Mohr, trying for his second consecutive win this season having won the Senior Miller High Life Classic in Mooresville, N.C., three weeks ago, could never get anything going. I got off to a good start and Ron just couldn t get lined up, especially on the right lane, said the 51-year-old Williams. I was able to play between the first and second arrow and just had a nice angle to the pocket and great ball reaction from there. In his Senior Tour debut, Williams won his first Senior Tour title in the Senior Miller High Life Classic in early May of 2010, shortly after earning a record seventh PBA Player of the Year crown at the conclusion of the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season. After also going on to earn PBA Senior Rookie of the Year honors last year, it has been quite a dry spell for Williams, however. He experienced the worst PBA Tour season of his 28-year career in where his best finish was sixth. It ended a record streak of 17 seasons with at least one Tour win. I m feeling very comfortable being able to make the adjustments I need to make and just bowling very well in general. You re going to have your good times and bad times but I m very encouraged and confident going May 25 the last day, squads will start again at 12:00 PM with squads following at 1:00-2:30 & 4:00 PM is last regular qualifying squad. I wish it was next week, Williams said of the U.S. Open. But, it gives me a couple weeks to get back to work on my game and relax a little bit. 4 Page 4 BOWLING NEWS NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWS by Connie Marchione ONLY 22 TEAMS FOR 70TH PACIFIC COAST DEAF MAY TOURNEY IN LAS VEGAS HENDERSON The 70th annual Pacific Coast Deaf Bowling Association tournament sponsored by Las Vegas Deaf Bowling Association drew only 22 (4 men) teams for this Memorial Day week-end at Strike Zone Center in Sunset Station Hotel & Casino. Blame this small entry on bad economy, which also affected the deaf women s bowling part as they drew only 6 teams. Although this writer had disappointing advance notice of 21 entries, his mail of the two pages tournament schedule received last May 16 did not mention the number of team, doubles, singles and Pacific Coast Deaf Masters entries. One had to count the number of teams, doubles teams and singles and Masters bowlers to get 22 teams, 45 doubles, 90 singles and 49 Masters entries as the totals for the events. There is ample room on the schedule sheet to have these numbers of entries on it but the only written words of information on it was the regrets that the third squad of doubles and singles had to be moved from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning at 8 AM. Also missing is the bowlers entering averages, which are newsworthy. Furthermore this low entry had been going on for the past 6 years, failing to reach the number of 30 twice after the last high of just 44 in 2004 at San Diego. Also this present low entry number tied the then record 22 (5 men) teams set 50 years ago in 1960 PCDBA s 20th anniversary tournament at Portland, OR. So lets have some history to refresh some people s minds. Since PCDBA s birth at Portland as Northwest Deaf Bowling Association in 1938, it was changed to PCDBA in 1939 when California sent up teams to compete. The rules had been for the host in the following year to be the deaf club that won the competitive bid in the captains and club delegates meeting. Also the said winner club should nominate its slate of officers in this meeting to meet captains and club delegates approval to run the tournament. In short, each bid winning club run the tournament according to PCDBA rules. So this writer was elected President in the 1952 tournament at Portland when Los Angeles Club for the Deaf won the bid for the 1953 tournament and nominated my name. We held the event at the fabulous 52 lanes Sunset Bowl (the largest in US at that time) in Hollywood. Transportation was bad that time but the tournament was a success with 16-team entries. But when as President, I told in the meeting that if PCDBA wanted to grow, it must change its rules to be like other bigger deaf bowling organizations in East with a membership base, open competitive officers elections and have money in its treasury. After that I left and nothing was done. Then in that 1960 Portland 20th anniversary tournament Valley Silent Club of Glendale, CA won the 1961 bid to be held in the 60 lanes Grand Central Bowl. VSC wanted me back as secretarytreasurer to run the tournament. The turning point came when I got all the PCDBA records stuff from last year s secretary. Just like in 1953, nothing had changed, also nothing in the treasury and some of the 20 years records lost or kept by the past years secretaries. Next I went to our officers and told them that I would stay only if we change the PCDBC rules and tell the clubs to come and vote for the changes or not. So we made up the new rules and the PCDBA clubs came to the 1961 meeting and approved the changes. The changes were to have membership dues, President and Vice-President to be elected one-year terms, Secretary treasurer for 3 years terms and clubs to bid for each year for up to 3 years and one after that. Also Host club to pay for Secretary-Treasurer s transportation and lodgings. Good start to be like other deaf groups East. And more, we broke the entry record with 24 teams. My baby, the 1961 Pacific Coast Deaf Masters, a scratch event was run on trail basis after the tournament. It was well liked and in the 1962 PCDBA meeting at Spokane, WA it was voted to be part of PCDBA tournament. Enough for the history lesson and back to the low entries, now for long as in the beginning PCDBA had the entry deadline rule as 30 days before the start of tournament and prize money to be mailed 30 days after end of tournament. This writer in his 8 years as the PCDBA secretary-treasurer had no problem with that rule as the entries grew from 24 to 40 teams in 8 years. He used his trusting old typewriter and mimeograph machine listing all the bowlers names both times. When the entries grew and computers replaced typewriters, bleeding hearts asked for extra time to have the deadline extended further back like 45 days to April 10th. Now for the last 6 years with less than 40 entries, there is no excuse for the extension and PCDBA should set the deadline back to 30 days. Look at the Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association in its 74 years existence had used 30 days deadline continuously all the years and it drew far more teams than PCDBA. He is the sixteenth kegler this season to bowl a perfect game in this league. I believe this league holds the Citrus Belt record for the most perfect games (16) bowled in one league, in one season. By the way, there are six weeks left in the league s season to bowl a few more perfect games. No one in the league has bowled multiple 300s, and all the perfectos have been bowled by men. DENISE BLACK- MON S 299 is the high game bowled by a woman. While MARK DYER leads the league with a 235 average, his high league game is 298. Has your league bowled more perfect games in a season? DeYAGER, GULLEY & HOUSTON Are Perfect by Frank Weiler MURRIETA The summer scratch season got off to a rip roaring start at CAL OAKS BOWL Thursday night, with three perfect games. Dave Gulley started the night with a 300 and 794 ( ) in his first series. His teammate TONY BOW- MAN fired a 277 and 716. Their second three game sets, in the two set, six game format were a bit lower. In their second series of the night, Jerry DeYager and Rowdy Houston both rolled perfectos. After rolling a 710 his first set, DeYager finished the night with a 719 ( ). Houston started with a 644 and capped off his night with the first 300 of his career, and 718 ( ). The Cal Oak s Summer Scratch 430 Doubles League features a six game format, with teams bowling two three game matches each night. Each team rolls a series on one pair of lanes, then moves to another pair for another series against another team. Six games for the price of three! Other big scores were rolled by RYNE CUNNINGHAM (774), JAMES HAWKINS (760), JOHN SOWELL (290), and DWAINE STREATER (287). Super sub PAUL NILSEN bowled 742 and 763 (250 average). KRISTA DELGADO RECORDS HER THIRD 300 GAME AT CUSBC WOMEN S CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT by Phyl Knoll Simi-Valley It was the icing on the cake for the CUSBC Women s Championship Tournament when on May 21 Krista (Moerschbaecher) Delgado, a 225 average bowler who calls Buena Lanes, MY HOUSE opened up her Team Event with 234, added a 256 game and finished up with her third career 300 Game, for a 790 series. This was the third 300 game bowled at this year s tournament. Krista began her bowling career at age 5 and was possessed by the game she loved so much. Her high game as a youth bowler was 298. At age 18, she gave up bowling and moved to Florida. Krista returned to her game here in California in 2009 and joined her first Adult League at Mission Bowl with Brian Leseberg. She remembers how all while a youth bowler; she envisioned her first 300 game. It finally happened. July 2010, in the Ball of Choice League at Buena Lanes while bowling with her coach Art Leseberg and wife Diane. Exactly 4 weeks later, she bowled another first an 825 series in that same league. The very next night, Krista recorded her second 300 game at Wagon Wheel Bowl. With her 825 series, Krista currently holds the record for the women in Ventura County. In this tournament, Krista threw her 300, using her Total NV by Ebonite, a gift from Mark French, a great bowler and personal friend. She says I originally told Mark that I hated the ball and it didn t work for me, but I was wrong, I have thrown all three 300 games with this ball and I think I am going to stick with it! Scott and Carol Moerschbaecher recognized Krista s natural talent for the game and as Krista says, If it weren t for my parents putting all their time, money, and support when I was a youth bowler, I would not be where I am today with my passion for bowling. It s also due to the support from Art Leseberg, my bowling coach, my amazing sons Andrew 7 yr and TJ, 3 yr, who are certified youth bowlers and of course, my dear boyfriend. I hope to grow old with bowling and continue to reach my goals. CBW Meeting Date Change ONTARIO The date for the California Bowling Writers Annual Meeting has changed please pass the word. We thank all the members of the ABTA for their support each week. We had a good shot for the tournament making the cut scores of +92 for the men and +63 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (4 men and 1 female) were Howard Smith (+88), Ed Shipley (+79), Don Eide (+79), Manny Loria (+79) and Mary Andruczyk (+47). Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 78 bowlers making it to the semi-finals this week. During our 4 pm squad we would see Kimo Borja string the first 11 strikes, come up for number 12 but leave the 3-10 baby split to finish with a nice 298 game. Finishing second was Marvin Crowder and Leo Tartamella with 1478 for $130. Coming in second was Steven Au with a +145 to sit out the first round. It took a +89 for the men and +30 for the women. Our top seed Chea had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500. The pot is maxed out and we have a back-up pot started. Our top seed drew a 268. We had no bowlers who shot that score. We will have $3,500 next week at West Covina Lanes, and continue to build on the back-up pot, which is $1,435. This week we had nine new bowlers join us. Let us welcome these new bowlers to the club, Derrick Willis II, Andrew Fredericks, Prentis Williams, Brysen Borja, Emily Daracan-Pielki, Andrew Mullins, Richard Becker, Cecilia Aquino, Christian Aquino Sr, and David Cunningham. This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven losers were Sonia Coronado, Eric Bruno, Beth Borci, Sun Sundara, Gina Velarde, Kimo Borja and Jerry Chang. They received checks of $ each. In the second round, the losers were Bryan Moore, Korng Ngow, Cezar Marcella and Steven Au, they received checks of $110 each. This would get us down to the final four bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $36 (Gino Mansilungan) to a high of $61 (Chris Kelly) depending on who would win. In this match, it was close all the way down to the 10th frame; And it would be BK who would take this match with a 207 to 202 finish. Chris and Gino finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $120 each. Our semi-final match was all set now. It would be bowled on Lanes 7 and 8 this week and pit our 6th seed against our 3rd seed. In the weekly horses we would see Mike paying $45 and Bk paying $36 if they would win their match. In a match that was close through the first 5 frames saw the tide change when Bk left the and only picked up the 2-4. That would prove to be enough for Mike as he would get 4 strikes in a row from the 7th frame on to finish with a 247/271 to 181/226 to advance to our title match. That would give Mike the victory and for those lucky investors that had him as a horse, he paid $45. Bk finished 3rd and received $205. The title game was set and bowled on Lanes 5 and 6. We would see two house favorites bowling each other this week. Pengsean being the top seed elected to lead off the match. Pengsean would open in the first frame while we would see Mike start off with a strike. This match would stay close and after six frames the difference was only 2 pins as neither bowler could find the strikes. They kept sparing early on. In the 7th frame, Mike came up on lane 5 and would leave the 6-7 split. This would allow Pengsean to take a small lead with marks in the 8th and 9th frames. Mike would come up in the 9th frame again on lane 5 and leave an pocket 8-10 split. Bowling Community Japan Relief Funds Are Distributed by B.A. Campbell JAPAN On May 9th, the Bowling Proprietors of Japan (BPAJ) distributed funds sent by the bowling community in the USA and other countries. Mr. Hero Noda relays to us that BPAJ distributed 80% of the funds to the Tōhoku region in the northeastern portion of Japan s main island, Honshu. There, the hard-hit prefectures of Miyagi (capital city: Sendai), Fukushima and Iwate all received funds from BPAJ. The other 20% of the funds were distributed to bowling community members in the Kanto region (on the central eastern coast), primarily in the Ibaraki prefecture. The BPAJ extends its appreciation for the generous support from the bowling community in North America and around the world. 11 BOWLING NEWS Page 11 Norton Advocate for Gay Athletes COSTA MESA Phoenix Suns President and CEO Rick Welts public acknowledgement that he is gay has encouraged Professional Bowlers Association Rookie of the Year Scott Norton to also take a public stand on behalf of gay athletes. Mr. Welts public acknowledgement had a great personal impact on me because someone who is still actively involved in professional sports has come out, Norton said in a statement posted Thursday on pba.com, the PBA s official website. Many athletes wait until they retire to officially come out, and the fact is, (Welts) had the courage to do so while still actively involved with the NBA. It is extremely important for me to show other gay athletes, current and future, that it s important to come out to send a message that being gay is only a small part of who we are. Being gay doesn t define who I am as a person or as a professional athlete. I am a professional bowler, a lawyer, a caring, compassionate and strong individual, and many other things, Norton said. It s important to explain to people that being gay has nothing to do with one s ability to do anything as a man, least of all compete at the highest level of sports. Norton, the son of United States Bowling Congress and Professional Women s Bowling Hall of Famer Virginia Norton, grew up as one of the most successful youth bowlers in California history. He was a collegiate All-American at two schools Cal State-Fresno and Utah. He was 1999 Junior National Champion and 2000 United States Amateur Champion, earning berths on Junior Team USA 2000 and adult Team USA He decided to delay his dream of bowling professionally until he secured a backup career as a lawyer. After passing the California bar exam, Norton entered and won the 2009 PBA Regional Players Invitational, which earned him an exemption to bowl full-time on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour during the season. At age 29, he then won the third event of the PBA Tour season, the Chameleon Championship, for his first title. He went on to lead all PBA Tour rookies in earnings, average and competition points and was elected Rookie of the Year by his fellow competitors. I encountered a number of obstacles due to my sexuality as a younger man, Norton said, but I had no wish then, nor any wish now, to cause turmoil within the sport. The issues that were in the past remain in the past. There were some serious impediments to my progression to becoming a professional bowler, but they only made me stronger and made me the person I am today. What I faced in the past only strengthened my belief that knowledge is vital in our path to acceptance, he continued. I will say that my experience on the PBA Tour last season surpassed everything I could have hoped for in terms of acceptance. The vast majority of bowlers on Tour have been accepting and welcoming, as the entire PBA staff has been, and that acceptance touched me deeply. I m very proud and happy with who I am and who I have become as a person, Norton said. I would hope that the public acknowledgement of my sexuality will empower other gay athletes past, present, or future to come to terms with the truth about who they are and love themselves for who they are. For my part, I have always tried to conduct myself in a professional manner at all times and put forth a good reputation both for my community, my family and for the PBA and sport of bowling. In addition to his bowling activities and his work for his own law firm, Norton is working as an advisor with Compete Sports, a gay sports network involving publications, radio and television that will hopefully generate more exposure for bowling within the gay community, as well as more tolerance and acceptance within the sports community. The first league session is always a little stressful with various forms of paperwork to fill out, greeting new members, finding your lanes and new team numbers, paying league fees and, getting down to the business of bowling! Sub Missy Parkin was fearless as she showed her style and smile, stroking for 778 and added another 279 for good measure to rack up a fabulous 1,057 set. And, you ask, Who IS that woman? Well, none other than the newly crowned 2011 USBC Queen, THAT S who! You wear the crown well Missy; just fantastic bowling. Sub Rick Sargent had all his ducks in a row and his aim was right on target as he shot for an even 700 and added a nice 256 finale to score 956. Nice shooting Rick! The very consistent and very dapper, Terry Brent certainly had his game face on stroking (slight adjustment)-208 and 279 to post a very fine 912. Incidentally, in his final game Terry HAD to strike on his final ball just to TIE his opponent (Queen Missy) for 279. What a match!!
