2 From the Desk of Kim Ninabuck MS/HS Principal Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I hope you have had a relaxing, joyful winter break spending time with family and friends. I cannot believe that the end of the first semester is right around the corner. The semester ends on January 20th. There will be no school on Monday, January 23 rd, teachers and staff will be having inservice. During the first or second week of January, I will be meeting with 8 th through 11 th grade students to start picking classes for school year. We would like students to start thinking about their career goals beyond high school when looking at classes. Once the students get their packet (Bowler High School Course Descriptions and ERVING Classes Booklet ) they will be planning out their classes for next year. The packets will also be available to you on our school web page (if you have internet access) so that parents may look at them prior to their son/daughter registering for classes. We hope to have them posted before or shortly after Winter Break so you can start having discussions with your son/daughter about the electives they would be interested in. We will also put a blank planning sheet on the web as well so that you know what the required courses will be at each grade level. The preregistration will be due no later than January 16th. This will help us to start looking at what classes we will be offering and to get a schedule in place for the school year. On another note, in regard to the ERVING Course catalog, we are surveying the students at this time to see what classes we may offer to them. If the course is already offered in our school, then they must take it with our instructor at school. There are also some criteria that must be met in order to take classes through ERVING. Students must have good grades and be independent and trustworthy students. These classes are usually upper level classes, some entail some blended learning and an ability to be independent as the instructor teaches from a different school through distance learning. ERVING classes are not recommended for freshman or sophomores. Attention parents of Juniors, testing dates have been set for the ACT and the ACT WorkKeys. This is two days of testing for our Juniors, we are given specific times that students are to be tested. Please help us by keeping your students in school on the days of testing. The test date is set for ACT Tuesday, February 28 and the ACT WorkKeys Wednesday, March 1. The only make-up day is set for ACT, Tuesday, March 21 and ACT WorkKeys, Wednesday, March 22. This is a great opportunity for our students as they can take this the ACT for no charge and if they do well on it, the student can use their score for entrance into college or technical school. We hope see many of you in the New Year. May your 2017-year bring you much joy and happiness!

The Bowler FFA Alumni is forming a committee to help decide on an appropriate memorial to honor Mr. A. When we achieve this great goal, we will be taking them to The Ronald McDonald House in Milwaukee. The tabs will be turned into cash at a recycling center which will provide a home away from home for families whose lives have been disrupted as a result of their child s illness or injury. Thank you to all who have contributed tops. Looking forward to getting many more tops, so keep collecting. Tops can be dropped off at the High School Office. So please save those pop-tops for a great cause!

9 GRANT MONEY AWARDED Middle School/High School Principal, Kim Ninabuck, left, recently proudly accepted a $ check from Janet Miller at Bowler School. Miller, a contracts and grants manager for the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, presented the check on behalf of Exxon Mobil and their Educational Alliance program. As a wholesaler of its product, Little Star Convenience Store, submitted the grant application on behalf of Bowler School District. The grant funds are to be used in the maintenance and support of the school in the area of math and/or science. I was very excited and appreciative of the grant as new curriculum in those areas have been implemented this school year, said Ninabuck.

10 NATIONAL UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATER DAY On Friday, December 16 th, Bowler School celebrated National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. Pictured above are elementary participants. The staff also joined in the fun with 2 nd grade teacher, Mr. Ferrero taking top honors with the ugliest sweater, followed by Physical Education teacher, Mrs. Siedschlag and high school Science teacher, Ms. Hansen. What a good way to get the holiday season off to a great start.

11 NOVEMBER STUDENT OF THE MONTH Student of the Month candidates were nominated by their classroom teachers based on the theme of integrity. 12 SPECIAL PERSON BREAKFAST A Special Person Breakfast (formerly Grandparent Breakfast) was held just before Thanksgiving at Bowler Elementary. Nearly 130 friends and family members attended the event in the school s cafeteria. The event was coordinated by food service manager Vicky Jolitz.

16 Nearly 125 people attended the Bowler School District family night held on December 7 th at the Stockbridge-Munsee Family Center. Billed as a Mini Pow Wow: Traditions Explained, people were treated to a night of great food (chili and fry bread), fellowship and culminating with the mini-pow wow and dance teachings, highlighted by the Medicine Bear dancers and drummers. Everyone was also able to pick out a free book to take home and was also able to sign up for a family night raffle that will take place near the end of the school year. The event was coordinated by Jeff DePerry and Harold Katchenago, who also served as emcee for the event. The event was sponsored by Bowler Schools and the Stockbridge- Munsee Family Services Program.

17 ELEMENTARY WINTER CONCERT The Elementary Winter Concert was held Monday, December 12 th. The different age groups performed to a full house, spreading holiday cheer to all. The Ukulele Club preformed for the crowd, and even Santa was at the concert to add to the festivities. All of the students worked hard and put on a wonderful program. The concert was directed by elementary teacher Ms. Amanda Hein.

19 NATIVE AMERICAN MONTH CELEBRATED AT BOWLER ELEMENTARY Bowler Elementary observed Native American Heritage Month by celebrating the history and culture of 11 tribal nations in the state of Wisconsin. A brief history of each nation was presented during morning announcements at the school. The histories of the Bad River, Lac Courte Oreilles, St. Croix, Mole Lake, Red Cliff, Lac du Flambeau, Chippewa, Potawatomi, Oneida and Ho-Chunk were chronicled each day. Two guests also gave brief histories of two local tribes. Bowler MS/HS Native American counselor Harold Katchenago gave a talk regarding the history of the Menominee Nation. Stockbridge-Munsee Tribal Council member Jeremy Mohawk also gave a talk on the history of the Stockbridge-Munsee band of the Mohican Indians. Fourth-grader teacher Lori Muelller coordinated the event. I was very appreciative that Mr. Katchenago and Mr. Mohawk shared their knowledge of the history and culture of the native people in Wisconsin, said Mueller. It is very much appreciated and will benefit the students and community of Bowler. 21 Santa s Workshop The Bowler Elementary annual Santa s Workshop was held on December 8 th in the elementary library. All elementary students were able to shop. Parent, grandparent, and community volunteers, along with the National Honor Society members helped staff the workshop and wrapped gifts for the students. People donated items and others were purchased by the event sponsor, the Bowler PTCO. Items were sold for $1.00 for students to give to family and friends. More pictures on next page

Take some time to understand the risks and implement a few safeguards so that you can help your child use smartphones safely. THE RISKS CYBERBULLYING With the constant connectivity of smartphones, your child may be more susceptible to cyberbullying or have more opportunities to cyberbully others. GEOLOCATION A GPS-enabled smartphone can reveal your child s location through online posts and uploaded photos. INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT With smartphones, your child has mobile access to content you may consider inappropriate, such as pornography or violent videos. SEXTING Your child may use the Internet and social apps to send, receive, or forward revealing photos. VIRUSES & MALWARE Just like a computer, a smartphone is vulnerable to security attacks if your child accesses unsecured websites and apps. 5WAYS TO BE SMARTER THAN THE SMARTPHONE! 1. Be a parent and a resource. Establish clear guidelines, including time limits and consequences for inappropriate behavior, but be open so your child will come to you with any problems. 2. Set up password protection. This will keep everyone but you and your child from accessing personal information stored on the phone. 3. Update the operating system. New versions often contain important security fixes. 4. Approve apps before they are downloaded. Make sure you understand their capabilities and approve their content. 5. Understand location services. GPS features are useful when using maps, but you ll want to disable location-tagging when your child posts anything online. 25 bowler area historical society news: the historical society will continue its hours for the winter to be available for tours and/or drop off donations on the 1 st tuesday of each month from 9am until noon. in the event of bad weather, there might be a need to cancel the hours. other visits can be made by appointment by calling or donations of photos, memorabilia and family heirlooms continue to be welcomed at the museum and in creation of research documents for studying the history of the village of bowler and townships of almon, bartleme, morris and seneca. items of special interest to the society at the present time would include telephones to show the progression from early years with the wooden wall phones to the present technology. our best wishes for everyone in 2017!

26 ALPHA, BRAVO, CHARLIE, DELTA On Thursday, December 1, 2016, Sgt. Shane Beegle of the Wisconsin National Guard came into Mr. Igl and Mrs. Siedschlag s Physical Education classes. Activities included calisthenics, a team building arms locked scavenger hunt, and a tic tac toe eagle/flag relay race. The Wisconsin National Guard promotes living a healthy lifestyle and is always ready, always there. We salute you sir. It was such a success the last 2 years with the fans supporting our student athletes that we wanted to do it again! 32 MINUTES, BOWLER BOARD OF EDUCATION, Monday, November 21, 2016 Board Approved December 19, 2016 Call to order: The meeting was called to order by Board President, Deb Roth at 6:00 p.m. It was certified that the meeting was given proper notice. Roll call was taken with the following board members present: Fuerst, Maves, Schultz, Grosskopf, Roth and Smith. Miller was excused absent. Also present were Faith Gagnon, District Administrator; Wade Turner, Elementary Principal; Kim Ninabuck, 7-12 Principal and Bonnie Matz, District Secretary. Approval of agenda: Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Maves for approval of meeting agenda. Motion carried. Approval of minutes of prior meetings: Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Grosskopf to approve the minutes of the October 17, 2016 board meeting and the minutes from the annual budget hearing, annual meeting and special meeting that followed on October 24, Motion carried. Approval of payment of vouchers: Motion by Schultz, seconded by Fuerst to approve vouchers through 67410, thirteen (13) manual checks and three (3) voided checks. Motion carried. Public Recognition: None Old Business: None Committee Reports:The policy committee rescheduled their meeting for December 1, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. to go through the old policy manual to prepare it for redaction. New Business: Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Schultz to approve the resignation of Janice Batterman as kitchen staff person and to post the position. Motion carried. Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Maves to approve the resignation of Curtis Vele as Boys Assistant Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball coach and to post the position. Motion carried. Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Roth to approve the purchase of two (2) new District Network Security/Firewall appliances including the necessary subscription licenses and a block of service support at a cost not to exceed $35, Motion was defeated. Motion by Fuerst, seconded by Roth to approve the purchase of one (1) new District Network Security/Firewall appliance including the necessary subscription licenses and a block of service support at a cost not to exceed $19, Motion carried. Discussion was held regarding contracting with CESA #8 to assist in filling the high school special education teacher vacancy. Mrs. Gagnon explained the shortage of special education teachers. The shortage of substitutes and the process for the current sub to be hired by CESA #8 for the rest of this school year. The Bowler School District will then contract with CESA #8 for her services. After a contract with CESA #8 is drawn up, it will be presented to the board for approval. The administration will continue to search for a licensed special education teacher. Discussion was held regarding the state School Report Cards. Mrs. Gagnon presented a power point with an overview of the results. Mrs. Gagnon explained the different categories and other information that is weighted in on the report cards. Questions from the Board were answered. Discussion was held regarding School Board election and Board vacancy procedures. Mrs. Debra Roth submitted a letter of resignation from her position on the School Board as representative of the Township of Seneca. The vacancy must be posted and a candidate appointed within sixty (60) days. Mrs. Gagnon passed out a pamphlet on Board Governance to the Board members. Superintendent requested a special board meeting for December 1, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. to address Board business that needs attention. Administrative Reports: Mrs. Gagnon s had no report due to covering her information during the meeting. Mrs. Ninabuck s report included: ERVING assembly in Marion for ERVING students to meet with their teachers 4 students went to the National FFA Convention On 10/21 the National Honor Society held a blood drive and will hold another one on Tilleda Town Hall Thanks to John Miller and staff who came to assist Mrs. Siedschlag with an archery unit Live total knee replacement surgery for the Body Structure and Function class was cancelled and rescheduled

33 Ms. Herrman, Ag teacher went with some students to the Jim and Jane Schultz farm 27 of 47 middle school students were eligible for the incentive movie for 1 st quarter 66 of 130 MS/HS students were on Honor Roll, 103 had no disciplines, 79 had no tardies, 91 had no failed classes Parent/Teacher conferences were held on 11/10 and 11/15 During conferences a financial aid help night was held and a Health fair was also held 11/15 and 11/17 STAR testing was done Bullying lesson #3 was implemented for all 7-12 students MS/HS Winter Holiday Concert will be held Sun. Dec. 11 th at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Turners report included: Math Family Night on October 27 th with about 100 people in attendance Next family night is Wed. Dec. 7 th at the Stockbridge-Munsee Family Center Field trips held: Kindergarten attended Schairer s Autumn Acres pumpkin patch, 4 th grade went to Heritage Hill, 3 rd grade visited Packer stadium 3 rd and 4 th grade classes are scheduled to attend the play A Christmas Carol at the Grand Theatre in Wausau PTCO walkathon fundraiser was held with one student walking/running 24 laps, equating to 6 miles On 10/31 a Halloween dance was held for grades 3-6 also many classes went trick or treating throughout the building 11/1 was picture retake day 1 st quarter incentive for students with 1 or 0 detentions was held on 11/3 The Scholastic Book Fair was held in conjunction with parent conferences 11/11-Veteran s Day ceremony was held Grades K-4 finished their 6 week session of Nutrition classes through Shawano County UW-Extension Special person breakfast was held on 11/17 with 124 special guests in attendance Santa s Workshop will be held on Thurs. Dec. 8 th. Elementary Winter concert will be on Mon.
