3 MESSAGES FROM THE ADMINISTRATION A Message from Faith M. Gagnon ~District Administrator~ On behalf of the Bowler Administrative team, the Bowler School Board, and staff and students of the Bowler School District, I would like to send out a profound and heartfelt Thank You to the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. On February 18, 2016, the Stockbridge-Munsee Community provided the Bowler School District with a check for $20,000 from their Aid to Local Government Fund. Through this funding, the school is looking to expand student access to technology primarily at the elementary level through the purchase of Ipad devices as well as possibly looking at the purchase of a utility trailer which will assist our high school Super Mileage Vehicle (SMV) class in getting their cars to the various competitions that are hosted throughout the state. If you get a chance, please stop by the high school library trophy window to view an enlarged poster sized replica of the check. As noted at the bottom of the check poster, this generous award truly reflects, Partnering with our neighbors to build bridges. THANK YOU!! Be the change you want to see in the world. ~Mohandas Karamachand Mahatma Gandhi From the Desk of Kim Ninabuck MS/HS Principal It is hard to believe we are half way through the 3 rd quarter. Time is really zooming by. The state testing is upon us. The junior class will be taking the ACT on Tuesday, March 1 st and the ACT WorkKeys on Wednesday, March 2 nd. In March we can start the Forward Exam with the 7 th, 8 th and 10 th grades. It will be a busy month. We have completed the district STAR assessment for quarter 3. Teachers will be getting those results shortly and parents should be receiving those with your son/daughter s progress reports when you come in for parent-teacher conference on February 25 or February 26. Please pick up your progress reports in the high school office. Parents I am asking for your assistance with your son/daughter. We are having many issues with cell phones-texting, Facebook, etc., with our students that are causing major disruptions to our learning environment here at school. The teachers are being asked to enforce this policy with no exceptions. This includes not using the cell phones as calculators or playing music. You will be getting a letter in the mail shortly. The expectation is that no cell phones will be used during the school day; this includes high school noon hour. If you need to get a message or speak to your son or daughter during the school day, please call the high school office. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

5 An Open Door The Value of Integrity Timothy Homp, 7-12 Counselor Much of what we strive to do with our children at home and in school-- is to instill character in particular, integrity--that will stand the tests of time and temptations to take the easy way out. True success in life has a lot to do with this little word, integrity. I d like to share with you two stories both have something very interesting in common. Story One A number of years ago Al Capone owned virtually all of Chicago. He wasn t famous for anything heroic, instead he was known for leading an organized group in illegal bootlegging, prostitution and murder. Capone had a lawyer nicknamed Easy Eddie. He was his lawyer because he was very good. Eddie s skills had kept Al Capone out of prison for a long time. Capone showed his appreciation for Easy Eddie by showering him with every luxury in life that could be enjoyed, including a gated mansion with servants. The estate he lived in was so big it filled an entire Chicago city block. Eddie lived the high life and gave little thought to the evils that went on around him. But he had one soft spot in his heart. He had a son he loved completely, and he ensured he had everything in life to help him get ahead. Despite Eddie s involvement in organized crime, he tried to teach his son right from wrong. He wanted his son to be a better man than he was. Yet with all of his wealth and influence there were two things Eddie could not pass on to his son his good name and example. It was later that Easy Eddie decided to try to right all his wrongs. He went to law enforcement and told the truth about Al Capone in hopes that it would clean up his tarnished name and offer some semblance of integrity to his son. In order to do this he knew he would have to testify against Al Scarface Capone and the mob and that it would most likely cost him dearly. He testified and within a year Easy Eddie s life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago street. In his eyes he had given the greatest gift he could to his son. Police pulled from his pocket a rosary, a crucifix, a religious medallion and poem he had clipped from a magazine. The poem read: The clock of life is wound but once, And no man has the power To tell just when the hands will stop At late or early hour. Now is the only time you own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in time. For the clock may soon be still.

6 Story Two World War II had created many heroes. One such hero was Lieutenant Butch O Hare, a fighter pilot. One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After being airborne, he looked down at his fuel gauge and to his surprise realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank! As a result he would not have enough to complete his mission and get back to the ship. He was told by his commander to return to the ship immediately. He did so reluctantly and dropped out of formation. As he was returning he saw something that turned his blood cold; a Japanese squadron was speeding towards the American fleet. With the American fleet gone on a sortie the ship was defenseless. He had no time to bring back his squadron and he had no way of warning the fleet of approaching danger. There was only one thing he could do and that was to divert them from the fleet. Not taking into account his own personal safety he dove into the formation of Japanese planes with his wing mounted guns blazing as he surprised one enemy plane after another. When his ammunition ran out he dove at enemy planes with the hope of clipping a wing and sending them in a downward spiral. Finally, the surprised and frustrated Japanese squadron took off in another direction. Butch O Hare and his battled fighter limped back to the carrier. Once he landed he told of his adventure. The film from the gun-camera mounted on this plane told the entire tale and showed the extent of Butch s heroism. He had destroyed five enemy aircraft. Because of his actions he became the Navy s first Ace of World War II and the first Naval Aviator to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. A year later at age 29 Butch was killed in aerial combat. His hometown would not allow his memory to fade and today the O Hare Airport in Chicago is named after his bravery. So what do these two stories have in common? Butch O Hare was Easy Eddie s son. If I can provide any help or answer any questions (whether academic, social, behavioral or post-secondary) please contact me at Ext or at timhomp@bowler.k12.wi.us.

7 January Elementary Counseling News By: Mrs. Carlson, PK-6 Counselor I am so happy to be back from maternity leave! This school year I am rotating through themes on a weekly basis, focusing on monthly lessons about bullying and careers at each grade level. I am currently doing a college unit with both groups of sixth graders. The fifth grade is working on study skills. The 4 th grade is working on communication skills. Grades K-3 are working on a variety of different topics, including tattling vs. telling, holding themselves accountable, reading body language to tell someone s mood, and teamwork. Students in first and second grades received bullying lessons through the Superflex Curriculum. This curriculum uses a superhero theme to teach students about different distractions (called unthinkables ) that can invade our brains and keep us from learning and being safe, respectful, and responsible. Superflex also gives students the tools they need to fight off the unthinkable in order to be successful! The curriculum is ongoing and has even spilled into some classrooms! Please join us on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 10:45 a.m. at Mohican North Star Casino for a showing of the Paper Tigers documentary. The documentary focuses on an alternative school geared towards working with students who have experienced trauma at a young age. Trauma effects many people everyday and can interfere with their ability to live happy lives. Go to and click on See the Movie and scroll down to our event on March 12 th and reserve your seats now! Starting in April, the Shawano County UW-Extension in partnership with Headstart will be offering Raising a Thinking Child, a course to help parents overcome everyday problems they see with their child, such as tempter tantrums, not listening, etc. Please fill out the registration form. Cost is $15 and will be refunded upon completion. If your child could benefit from certain classroom topics or individual help, please contact me. I am very open to suggestions. I can be reached at , ext. 1 or at kellycarlson@bowler.k12.wi.us. Think Spring! Kelly Carlson
