2 From the Desk of Kim Ninabuck MS/HS Principal I am amazed that it has been such an easy winter for us this year. I have quite a few cousins on the coast that have gotten hit hard with winter and tease them relentlessly that they should have stayed in Wisconsin. We are half way through the school year already with seeing the first semester coming to an end on January 22 nd. I have met with the 8 th through 11 th grades to discuss and pre-register for the school year. I have an ERVING scheduling meeting in February to secure spots for our students. I will be starting to work on next year s schedule shortly as well. Keep in mind, students taking ERVING courses need to meet the criteria to be enrolled. Students must have good grades and be independent and trustworthy. These classes are usually upper level classes, some entail some blended learning and an ability to be independent as the instructor teaches from a different school through distance learning. We will be having Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday, February 25 th from 3:30-7:15 and Friday, February 26 th from 8:15-Noon. Please come in and talk with your son/daughter s teachers to see how things are going. Just a reminder the 3 rd Quarter STAR testing (District Test) will be happening on or around February 10 th. Attention parents of juniors, testing dates have been set for the ACT and the ACT WorkKeys. This is two days of testing for our Juniors, we are given specific times that students are to be tested. Please help us by keeping your students in school on the days of testing. The test date is set for ACT Tuesday, March 1 and the ACT WorkKeys Wednesday, March 2. The only make-up day is set for ACT, Tuesday, March 15 and ACT WorkKeys, Wednesday, March 16. This is a great opportunity for our students as they can take the ACT for no charge and if they do well on it, the student can use their score for entrance into college or many technical colleges. Attention parents of freshman and sophomore students, the ACT Aspire are the state required test for them. The testing window will open in April. I will follow up with dates for their tests as soon as we get a schedule together. Please make sure your son/daughter is present when their testing is going on. The PBIS team had teachers do a mini booster for expectations on some behaviors that we are seeing slip with our students. Students were reminded about not using cell phones during the day, getting to class on time, and how to appropriately use passes and sign out of classrooms. We are going to be focusing on these behaviors so that we don t disrupt the learning environment. I just want to remind parents to make sure our students are dressed appropriately for the weather. I see many older students coming to school in shorts and no jackets. If the bus would break down or their cars go in the ditch, I am concerned they will not be dressed warm enough. Please remind them to dress accordingly for the weather. Let s hope the weather stays reasonable for us. Stay warm.

6 Bowler 7-12 Guidance & Counseling Newsletter February 2016 Timothy Homp, Counselor It s Scholarship Season! Yep! Scholarship Season. For soon to be graduating Seniors planning to continue their education at a college, university or trade school, NOW is the time to apply for scholarships from any available sources (I ll say more about this later) and federal financial aid from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Free is the key word here. The FAFSA application is free. Do not use any application for federal financial aid if a fee of any kind is charged. Go to to complete the FAFSA application form to qualify for grant and loan money. Grants do not have to be repaid. The more financial need is shown, the more grant money students qualify to receive. Financial and tax information can wait to be added until your 2015 Federal taxes are completed. Once the FAFSA is begun, applicants may return any time to make any changes or add information as it becomes available. Completing the FAFSA application is important also because other Federal grant programs, such as the Talent Incentive Program or TIP Grant, require that the FAFSA application to be completed. Assistance with FAFSA and other grant applications is available. Contact me with questions. Scholarship PowerBall? Not quite, but there is a significant amount of scholarship money available from many sources, both national and local. There certainly are national scholarships worth applying for if the student meets the achievement and/or financial need criteria. Students and parents have limited time and energy to give to the application process, so it is important to choose scholarships with the greatest chance for success versus time + energy expended. Colleges and universities offer a wide-variety of scholarships to higher achieving and/or financially needy students. Some of the best bets for returns are with local scholarship opportunities whether offered by community organizations or local businesses. Parent or student association with a scholarship-offering business or organization increases the chances for a scholarship award. Of course, the application itself should be completed as professionally as possible following all directions carefully and submitted on time. This newsletter is aimed particularly at Seniors and their parents but is for all students and parents benefit. Preparation for graduation, post-high school success, including scholarship awards to help pay for college, begins long before the students Senior year. Students best ensure their future success through diligence and achievement in grades K-11. As in sports, few athletes excel, regardless of talent, on the court or field of play without commitment to long hours of practice. Excellence in the classroom and academic success are products of commitment and hard work. Commitment, self-discipline, integrity, effort, achievement, involvement, teamwork, and service to others will always be valued and rewarded when it comes to scholarships. Yep! It s scholarship season, all right! In fact, it s always scholarship season! If I can be of assistance to you or your son or daughter during this time, please feel free to contact me at ext or at timhomp@bowler.k12.wi.us +th

17 Dear Parent/Guardian; During the week of Valentine s (Feb. 8-12), the 3 rd 6 th grade classes will be participating in Jump Rope/ Hoops for Heart during their Physical Education class. The proceeds will go to the American Heart Association. Your child may have brought home a flyer with some prizes on it. This is all voluntary and they do not have to do the fundraiser. During their Physical Education time the students will be jumping rope & or playing basketball. They will be doing this even if they are not going to do the fundraiser. The students have been told that they need to ask their parents/guardians if they can participate in the fundraising. They were also told if they collect any money, it needs to be turned in. If your child earns $5.00, they can get a voucher for 1 Gamblers game and also earn a lanyard and super pup. Money can be collected, or if you want to do on-line donation that is another option. Please note the flyer on the next page. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at school. Again, this fundraiser is voluntary, but I hope you will consider letting your child raise some money for those that have heart issues. Every little bit helps. Deb Siedschlag P.E. teacher
