May 2014 Bowler School District News... Graduation May 30, 2014 Bowler High School Gymnasium 7:30 p.m. Congratulations BHS Class of 2014 Live life to the fullest with no regrets

From the Desk of Kim Ninabuck 7-12 Principal It looks like spring may have arrived, and our spring athletes are getting some games and meets in at last. Our seventy-five 3 rd quarter honor roll students celebrated their success on May 11 with ice cream sundaes. We ve seen some nice successes on our WKCE this year and will be celebrating with those students later this month. The Financial Challenge team coached by Mr. Hahn again was extremely successful. We have a lot of successes this year, but we still are not done improving what we are doing at Bowler. We are getting ready for graduation and the seniors have started counting down the days. The seniors last day of classes will be Wednesday, May 28 and graduation is Friday, May 30, 2014 followed by the Chem-Free celebration for the seniors. We ve been so busy looking at curriculum this year and have a lot more to work on. Our MS/HS science department has met and will continue to meet to look at new textbooks for some of the classes. The Physical Education Department will also be meeting shortly to start looking at their curriculum. The math and science along with agriculture and shop departments are meeting to look at some ways we can infuse science and math into our electives. We continue to look at getting classes at Bowler that are dual credit (both high school and tech/college credit) to give our students a head start for the world beyond high school. Currently we offer 5 of these types of classes at Bowler. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has made a change to the graduation requirements for our students starting with the current freshman class. All classes starting with the graduating class of 2017 will be required to have 3 years of Science and 3 years of Math (it has been 2 years of math and 2 years of science in the past.) Many changes are coming; we may be a small school but we want our students to have every advantage possible to be successful as adults. As the weather warms up, we need to work together to keep our students in school and on track. Keep in mind that the Bowler School District has a dress code (in the Student Handbook) that is board approved and needs to be followed. Remind students to please dress appropriately for school. The 4 th quarter is one of the hardest quarters to complete as the weather gets nice and students want to be outside. Skyward access is available to all parents if they have internet access. Please do not hesitate calling teachers about how your son/daughter is doing in school. We need to work as a team for the benefit of all our children. Please call the High School office if your son/daughter is going to be absent. Summer School information/class offerings are included in this Chalkdust. Make sure you get your son/daughter registered for classes as soon as possible. Remember Homework Club is available Tuesdays and Thursdays if students need assistance in keeping up with assignments or just need a quiet place to study. We have many good things going on in Bowler, let s continue to strive for excellence with our students! Happy Spring!

Teachers' Chris Fuller (left) and Brittany Knueppel help students and their parents construct catapults as Jack Samuelson (end of table), who coordinated the event, keeps a watchful eye on the activities. The event was also made possible through the support of the College of Menominee Nation in Keshena. Nearly 60 people attended the event. Jack Samuelson, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) educator from the Milwaukee area taught lessons to students at all grade levels in the elementary school. Samuelson travels around the Midwest promoting hands-on science and engineering.

Farm Safety A farm safety presentation was recently held at Bowler Elementary by Keith Wilson, a farm safety expert from Antigo who travels around the state promoting this crucial message. Wilson was brought in to speak to fourth- through sixth-graders as a culmination to a fourth-grade Dairyland unit. Jack Samuelson (right), who is one of the leading STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) educators in the state, demonstrated to fifth-grade students at Bowler Elementary about Lego robotics. Samuelson also taught lessons at other elementary grade levels and conducted a Science Family Night during his three-day stay at the school. A map showing where people have died from farming accidents. Bowler Student Competes at State Level, Ohhh. So Proud! Pick your poison: Fifth-grader Kaitlyn Pingel chooses between a toxic and non-toxic substance from two jars which look virtually identical, illustrating how easy it can be for people to accidentally drink a dangerous substance. Jazmyne Brown, a seventh-grader at Bowler Middle School competed very well in the state Geography Bee recently in Madison. She was one of only 100 middle-schoolers in the state who earned a right to compete in the state competition. Wilson demonstrates how easy it is for a tractor to be flipped over.

MISSISSIPPI BOUND Christine Fuller, a veteran teacher at Bowler Elementary School, has been selected from a national applicant pool to participate in a workshop entitled The Most Southern Place on Earth: the Music, Culture, and History in the Mississippi Delta. The program will be held on the campus of Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. The workshop is one of twenty summer study opportunities supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Endowment is a federal agency that supports Landmarks of American History and Culture workshops so that teachers can study with experts in humanities disciplines. The teachers selected to participate will receive a stipend to help cover their travel, study, and living expenses. The Most Southern Place on Earth: Music, Culture, and History in the Mississippi Delta will allow participants to explore the heritage of the Mississippi Delta. The Delta is a vast floodplain formed by the Mississippi River. It was still largely wilderness during the Civil War, and was rapidly cleared to support cotton plantations based on sharecropping. It is the birthplace of the Blues and also Rock n Roll. It has been the scene of many civil rights activities and it has produced many political leaders, authors and artists. Workshop participants will travel throughout the Delta, visiting places where important events transpired and listening to lectures presented by historians and other experts.

Duct Tape Follies 2nd-grade teacher Joe Ferrero and guidance counselor Alexandria Kuchinski are being duct taped to the wall by a group of willing students, who earned the right to tape their teachers by showing positive behavior throughout the quarter. Assisting were teachers Lori Lecheler (with Ferrero) and Brittany Knueppel, assisting Kuchinski. Do you have a stash of aluminum cans? Would you like to donate them to a worthy cause? The Panther Pack Booster Club is now accepting donations of aluminum cans. Whether you have 1 bag or 10 bags, we will accept them all! Please drop off your donation by the school shed, south of the elementary, on School House Rd. Your donations are greatly appreciated! Our Mission Statement: Provide support and develop interest for all programs and activities that promote athletic excellence, sportsmanship, school spirit, scholastic achievement, and the opportunity of higher education in the Bowler School District.

BHS Trophy remains at BHS FICB teams advance to State level On April 9th, at the College of Menominee Nation, the 7th annual Finance and Investment Challenge Bowl was held. The FICB is knowledge contest about personal finance, business, economics, the stock market, etc. The competition between two teams consists of three rounds. In the 1st round, each team is asked three questions worth 5 points each. Only the team asked can answer. In round two, the questions are toss-up questions. The team answering correct receives 10 points, and if you answer incorrectly you lose 5 points. Also, if you answer incorrectly the opposing team has the opportunity to answer. The 3rd round works the same as round two except that correct answers are worth 20 points and incorrect answers are deducted 10 points. This year s competition was battled out amongst six teams from three local schools (Gresham, Menominee Indian, and Bowler--4 teams). For the 6th year in a row, a team from Bowler (Kanum Vele, Craig Chroge, Walker Miller, and Quentin Rondeau) took home the title. Taking 2nd was also a team from Bowler (Blake Backes, Jay Onesti, Beau Brady, and Aaron Bestul). The 3rd place team was also from Bowler (Trace Miller, Blade Cameron, and LaKeisha Williams). The Bowler team of Opal Sisk, Melanie Everson, Chelsea Shields, and Amber Miller took sixth. The team from Gresham took fourth and Menominee Indian placed fifth by winning the Consolation Bracket. Bowler is coached by Bill Hahn. Gresham is advised by Brenda Hoffman and Menominee Indian by Marie Raasch. 17 Three Bowler High School Students Honored Three Bowler High School students were honored at a ceremony called Celebrating Success at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus in late March. Kanum Vele, Cody Montez, and Trae Opper were among forty-nine students in the state chosen for this prestigious event, which is geared toward minority students who are going above and beyond in grades and community involvement. Kanum, accompanied by his father, Jeff Vele, was the only student who could make it to the awards ceremony and dinner. All three students were nominated because they are the top three Native American students in the junior class in regards to academics. Cody ranks second in his class, with Kanum as a close third. All students have at least a 3.0 GPA and are actively involved in both athletic and academic organizations. It was a genuine pleasure to witness Kanum being honored alongside of his peers from much bigger districts, said 7-12 Guidance Counselor, Kelly Carlson. All three of our students nominated have the potential to go places in this world and represent our little community!
