Rogers TV Cup The Kickoff Seventy-three bowlers participated in the Rogers Cup Kickoff Tournament on Good Friday. A 4-game qualifier, the first event was successful! Thanks to our sponsors: J&K Bowling Products & Supplies, Fox s Bakery & Deli and Quinte Bowl for your generous donations to the event. Top qualifiers in the youth divisions each earned $ Congratulations Mykalea Mitchell (Youth A), Steven Bas (Youth B) & Nick Ciccolini (Youth C). Winning the tournament and $ scholarship award each was Wesley Shaw (Youth A), Steven Bas (Youth B) & Dawson Sears (Youth C). At the end of the tournament, tickets were drawn for the Cheer for a Strike Challenge. Congratulations to Nick Porter for rolling a strike to win the $50.00 YDOUGH. Gallant sisters win Scholarship awards at the Rogers Cup Kickoff Tournament Athletes Were Greeted... Hollywood Style! Bowlers walked the red carpet while being drummed in by Earth drum. And greeting them at the door was none other than IRONMAN. Opening ceremonies began with Earth drum followed by speeches from MPP, Ann Hogarth, MP Representative, Alex Nutall & Acting Mayor, John Brassard. BEYOND HAVEN sang their rendition of O Canada. Closing the ceremonies was the inaugural rolling of the opening shot by John Brassard & Alex Nutall. Alex didn t fair too well with an early hook into the channel, but John managed to find the Brooklyn to throw a weak strike. Let the competition begin!
The Competition Fourteen teams from Southern Ontario & four teams from Quebec began the 18-baker game format to determine the top 8 for scholarship awards. Teams were sponsored by a company and were coached by either a Team Canada member (past or current), a sponsor or a certified coach. Athletes received grab bags filled with goodies from the community of Barrie, Ontario. Raffle prizes, door prizes, magazines and merchandise items were available throughout the day. What a great weekend. One of the best bowling weekends I have had. Every player I have spoke to is anxious for next year's Rogers TV Cup! -- Mario Turcotte The competition was fierce but FUN! Friendly rivalry between coaches and sponsors began while parents cheered and supported their favorite teams. Team Boon Burger Café, rolled their way to success. Coached by (former) Team Canada member and 2014 reigning champ, Melissa Legault, the team of Jake Bowden, Nicholas Prychitko, Reegan Wormington, Olivia Papa & Carter Bailey earned their triumph over Team R&R Auto by a measly 18 pins. The outcome was determined by a two-game total pinfall match. Team R&R Auto had a lead on Team Boon Burger by 38 pins, however, game 2 was a different story. Down to the last frame, Jake Bowden needed a mark to secure Boon Burger s victory. Two-hander, Bowden, did not disappoint - a strike in the 10th secured the win.
Team Boon Burger Café Runners-up each received $ with the Champions receiving $ each in scholarship awards. The 2016 ROGERS TV CUP CHAMPIONSHIPS is booked for March 26 and exciting NEW adventures are being planned. Thanks for a successful 2nd Annual! 4 CTF CONNECTION Hot on the heels of the Rogers TV Cup, the inaugural YBT Grand Prix featured 40 players competing for $2,150 in CTF-SAFE scholarship funds. With almost equal representation from Southern Ontario (18 players) and Quebec (22 players), the field looked ready for battle. The average cut fell at 160, leaving 28 players in the A Division and 12 players in the B Division. Qualifications consisted of 4 games, followed by an elimination of the lowest scoring players in each Division. Play continued the same way through the Quarter-finals (2 games) and the Semi-finals (1 game). With so much money up for grabs, the atmosphere of the Finals (1 game) was intense. Scoring was modest, and a mere 4 pins separated 1st from 5th in the A Division. In fact, a one-game tie-breaker was required to determine 4th and 5th places in the A Division!
In terms of what this tournament brought to the players, and to the experience of the Rogers Cup weekend, it was the perfect opportunity for each province's best players to face off head-to-head against each other. The player bonds and new friendships that began at the Rogers Cup were strengthened at the Grand Prix. Having a second tournament -- with an impressive prize fund -- gave the weekend extra value for all of the players who attended, especially those who drove 4 or 6 or 8 hours to get there! The YBT Grand Prix could not have happened without valuable contributions from its sponsors: the QYBT, Kennedy Bowl, and of course Buffa Bowling. Your support of the community is greatly appreciated. Division A Division B Charles Olivier-LaRoche $ Blake Foster $ Courtney Troli $ Reese John $ Kenny Ho $ Oliver Tang $ Dakota Faichnie $ Jake Bowden $ May your adventures bring you closer together, even as they bring you far from home. --Karen Wilson ************ Koo On Bowling (by James Koo) Rogers TV Cup The Ball, the Pins, the Team On Saturday April 4th, over 100 bowlers and coaches across Quebec and Southern Ontario bowled in the second annual Rogers TV Cup. This was no ordinary tournament; the TV cameras were on, at least 18 games were bowled in Baker format, and there was a ton of cheering a ton. It seemed like everyone was busy during the tournament; several booths were set up for raffles and promotions, coaches developed strategies for the team, and the bowlers were bowling! As I reflect back on the day s events, I realized that I learned a lot about myself and bowling as a team. successful. What is really unique about the Rogers TV Cup is the format of play. In the Baker style format, each bowler on the team bowls 2 frames for each game bowled. As a result, every bowler makes a direct contribution to the total score for each game, and the team must coordinate their efforts in order to be With my team, we started off poorly, being in second last place after the first 4 games. Although the lane conditions were not too difficult at the beginning, our team found it difficult to communicate effectively and make the right adjustments to be successful. After a quick regroup from our coach, John Fallis, we started
making spares and linking strikes together. We quickly jumped 10 places and found ourselves in the semi-finals at the end of the 18-game qualifying block. What I experienced that day was not a miracle, as some bowlers claimed. It was the extraordinary effects of great teamwork and a solid foundation of respect between teammates. Knowing that my team had my back when I threw each shot gave me the confidence to bowl well, especially when we needed it most. As an individual, I also learned a lot about oil pattern breakdown that day. At the beginning of the tournament, the lanes were relatively simple to work with; bowlers could send the ball out (despite the long pattern length) and there was plenty of error room in the middle of the lane. In the later half of qualifying, the lanes began to seriously transition into a disaster. The front part of the lane started to dry up, and bowling balls were unable to clear the fronts for a consistent ball reaction. Many bowlers resorted to speeding up or changing balls to adjust for the transition, but I decided to loft the ball and keep everything else consistent. Eventually, spares became nearly impossible for some as their bowling balls hooked unpredictably, even for 7 and 10 pins. Bowling at the Rogers TV Cup tournament has been an exciting experience for me, and I am definitely going to be back next year. The question is, will you? P.S. Many many thanks to the YBOWL committee for organizing an awesome tournament, and a HUGE thanks go to all the sponsors that have furthered the progress of youth bowling in Canada. YBT Invitational The season has come to an end. And what a way to end the 25th season. An average of 91 bowlers per event & a total scholarship payout of $21,360.00, including the ROGERS TV Cup. YBOWL would like to personally thank the staff at YBT for all their hard work and dedication to this strong program. Gus & Laurie, Ian & Dru, if it were not for the 4 of you, where would youth bowling be? We salute you! Be proud and relish in your Silver Jubilee Celebrations!
