We are grateful for the several pro-active suggestions that have come in. Please remember that some of the suggestions, though good, may not be implemented because it may not fit into the `scheme of things'. One has to consider and constantly keep in mind, the overall interest of the Club. Please do remember that while Committee members and Office Bearers have chosen to serve the members, they are still entitled to their privacy and personal space. The Pongal/ Baisakhi/ Sankaranti (take your pick) event for Pongal, was outstanding- showcasing the best of Tamil culture and arts. The performance by Kalaimamani.was a special treat to watch. His sense of balance and poise was outstanding. The I Bar tingled with another special event - the `Pub Quiz'* and a Special Performance by the All Girls Music Band "MISSFits", on Saturday, January 19th, Republic Day - 26th January starts with the traditional flag hoisting at the Club. A day to celebrate the liberation of the country and to remember the sacrifices of the freedom fighters that made it possible. 2 26th January 1950 is one of the most important days in Indian history as it was on this day the constitution of India came into force and India became a truly sovereign state. In this day India became a totally republican unit. The country finally realized the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous freedom fighters who, fought for and sacrificed their lives for the Independence of their country. So, the 26th of January was declared as national holiday and has been recognized and celebrated as the Republic Day of India, ever since. Today, the Republic Day is celebrated with much enthusiasm all over the country and especially in the capital, New Delhi where the celebrations start with the Presidential address to the nation. The beginning of the occasion is always a solemn reminder of the sacrifices of the martyrs who died for the country in the freedom movement and the succeeding wars for the defense of sovereignty of their country. Then, the President comes forward to award the medals of bravery to the people from the armed forces for their exceptional courage in the field and also the civilians, who have distinguished themselves by their different acts of valour in different situations. To mark the importance of this occasion, every year a grand parade is held in the capital, from the Rajghat, along the Vijaypath. 3 march past in all their finery and official decorations even the horses of the cavalry are attractively caparisoned to suit the occasion. The crème of N.C.C cadets, selected from all over the country consider it an honour to participate in this event, as do the school children from various schools in the capital. They spend many days preparing for the event and no expense is spared to see that every detail is taken care of, from their practice for the drills, the essential props and their uniforms. that particular state accompany each display. Each display brings out the diversity and richness of the culture of India and the whole show lends a festive air to the occasion. The parade and the ensuing pageantry are telecast by the National Television and are watched by millions of viewers in every corner of the country. The parade is followed by a pageant of spectacular displays from the different states of the country. These moving exhibits depict scenes of activities of people in those states and the music and songs of The patriotic fervor of the people on this day brings the whole country together even in her essential diversity. Every part of the country is represented on this occasion, which makes the Republic Day the most popular of all the national holidays of India. Republic Day is also recognised, remembered and celebrated in our Club with the hoisting of the national flag in the morning. On 13th of February, Wednesday, eve of Valentines Day, from 8 pm at the Pool side. Be with your loved ones to win prizes for Movie on 16th February at 7 pm. 5 The I Bar p r e s e n t s MARS Vs. VENUS Saturday, February 23rd, 2008, 8pm onwards This Valentines season when Love is in the air, The I Bar presents a twisted event! An Anthakshari Contest pitting Men against Women!Who will rule? What is Anthakshari? If you dont know there where have you been? It is extremelly popular with shows on almost all TV channels! Antakshari ( ) or more correctly Anthyaakshari is a musical game played in South Asia, particularly in India and Pakistan. The word is derived from two Hindi (with Sanskrit origins) roots: Ant ( ) meaning End Akshar ( ) meaning letter of the alphabet The idea of the game is to start singing the first two lines of a Hindi film song (usually from Bollywood movies).the classic style is where two or more teams sing songs which start with last consonant letter of the song sung by previous team. When a team sings a song they earn points. Example: (aa chal ke tujhe, mai.n le ke chaluu.n ik aise gagan ke tale jahaa.n Gam bhii na ho, aa. Nsuu bhii na ho bas pyaar hii pyaar pale) ends with (le). Thus can be followed by (lag jaa gale ki phir ye hasiin raat ho na ho shaayad phir is janam me.n mulaaqaat ho na ho) Typical rules: The songs have to be started from the beginning. Only songs from Indian movies are allowed (default). Songs from other languages can be allowed with prior agreement if most people in the group know that language. At least the first two lines of the song, have to be sung. No song can be repeated again in the same round. Some flexibility may be allowed allowed for unusual endings. The above are just guidelines and we may not follow exactly whats mentioned in this article. We can guarantee you, one thing though. The format will be simple and great fun! So will it be the BoyPower or GirlPower that will rule?! 6 The traditional harvest festival of Pongal was celebrated in great style at the Club The entire lawn was redecorated with traditional Sugarcane and Mavilai Thoranam. The entertainment was uniquely traditional with Karagattam and PoiKaal kudirai and special performance by the world famous Kalaimamani. Thiru Madurai Muthu. 8 THE PUB QUIZ Lata Kumarasamy MIC The I Bar & Library The first ever Pub Quiz to be held at any pub in Chennai was held at The I Bar, PC! The evening was sweet and charming. Dr. Navven was lively and had members present fully engrossed in the Quiz. Participation while fun and taken in good humor was also surprisingly serious!! Winners got Gift Vouchers from Odyssey and Bottles of Wine. Besides the Quiz, there was a classy music performance by the Girls Band Missfits! Its was a fantastic acoustic jam and a treat to listen too. We hope to see more of the Missfits soon! Special mention as always to the Bar & Catering Staff, sponsors UB, Kingfisher, Odyssey & members Mr. Ganesan. Special thanks to member Mr. Vivish George for his inputs. First Match on 22 Dec 2007 The Presidency Club 173 for 3 in 20 Overs beat The Madras Boat Club 44 all out in 13 Overs. Gaurav Jain 55 in 40 balls retired. 13 Tarun Kumar Bagga MIC Badminton, Squash, Swimming pool & SnackBar Members will be happy to know that the squash court has been given a fresh look (you can see it for Yourself from the photographs). The court has been given a fresh coat of paint and the court is ready for play. From the Badminton side, we are planning to have a friendly intra club tournament called CHOSEN PARTNERS, where in we are planning to have a mix and match between the morning and evening regulars. It is going to be a best of 3 s match. In case you are not a regular, give your name to the shuttle markers at the club and we will pair you up. We are planning to have the matches in the first or second week of February. From the snack bar side talks are going on with Kwality Walls to put up a small little ice cream parlour and it should be through in the month of February. On the new year eve we had a small event in the snack bar, a game to guess the weight of a I POD NANO Totally we received 233 entries and out of that there were 14 correct ones ( thanks to the use of GPRS on mobile phones). The correct weight of the I POD NANO was It is a 4 GB and can store upto 4 full movies or 800 songs. The i pod was sponsored by Music & Mobile Zone in Fountain Plaza. We had a lucky dip for these 14 members and the lucky winner of the i pod along with a full set of speakers is Mr. P. SREEDHARAN (R 1087). Congratulations. All is well from the swimming pool side.
