Dear Members, Head of The Adyar On 11th March, Saturday we had a mile event, Head of The Adyar, with about 80 participants and many members who had turned out to cheer them.

3 Dear Members, Head of The Adyar On 11th March, Saturday we had a mile event, Head of The Adyar, with about 80 participants and many members who had turned out to cheer them. Head competitions are different from the regattas that we are used to. In Head events, participants do not start together, instead they start one at a time and only after the start and finish times for everyone is recorded, can the winner be identified. This is an event where each crew needs to be very motivated and focussed to push themselves throughout the event. In addition, the distance covered is a mile, not the usual 500 or 800m! We had enthusiastic rowing members, PUCs and student members take out sculls, double sculls, coxless pairs, coxed fours, eights and the quadruple sculls to participate. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of participants who ranged from age 12 to 80! In particular, I must mention the seniors Dr. Acharya, S Radhakrishnan, P Venkatram, and Revi Thomas. Thank you for your support and participation. I must also thank the past Presidents, past Captains and Club Colors who helped make the event a success. It was wonderful to have our senior oarsperson, Pervez Mulla, join us as the chief guest for the event. We plan to have such Head events regularly and have instituted rolling trophies in memory of senior members and oarspersons. The trophies are M. Kesavan Trophy for Single Scull; Arvind C. Bhagat Trophy for Double Scull; Ketan M. Adhia Trophy for Coxless Pair; and Ajaz Sikkander Bakth Trophy for Coxed Fours. No doubt in future editions, we will be able to refine the handicap. Unfortunately, due to the lack of clarity in entries till the last minute, we were unable to implement any of the several methods of calculating handicap. National Erg Competition I am happy to share with you that MBC s Siddharth Sunil recently won the Bronze in the Open Men's individual 2000m event at the Second National Indoor Rowing Championships with a timing of 6:38:00. The Gold and Silver were taken by the Army with timings of and The Championship saw more than 200 participants from 18 states. Congratulations Siddharth! New boats have arrived Six new sculls 3 maiden sculls and 3 junior sculls for the youngsters - arrived recently. I am sure this will reduce the waiting time for a scull for everyone as it will free up the current boats for our PUCs and rowing members. Rowing Calendar Summer has started and it is, of course, almost time for our Annual Rowing Summer Camp. The Camp will be held from 25th April to 27th May. We encourage members children (between 12 and 20 years) to sign up for the camp and share the information with their friends. Please remember there is limited space in the Camp and so I encourage interested youngsters to sign up at the earliest to avoid disappointment. The details can be found in this issue of Oarspeak. In the Club s 150th Year, I am happy to announce that we are reviving the Merchants & Bankers Regatta. This year, clubs are also invited to form teams and hence the Regatta has been rechristened Merchants, Bankers & Clubs Regatta. I call upon our lawn members to form a team and join us on the waters for the Regatta. Training for the Regatta has already started and will continue till June middle. The finals of the Regatta are scheduled for June 24th. As you probably know our Club was originally founded on the banks of the Ennore Creek in the year 1867.

As you probably know our Club was originally founded on the banks of the Ennore Creek in the year The Sesquicentennial committee and the Club committee have decided to hold an event at the Ennore Creek to commemorate our 150th year. We have also decided to join hands with the Save Ennore Creek Campaign to help create awareness for the same. In this connection a free concert by TM Krishna organised by the fishing villages for Ennore was held on the 18th of March. Photo credit: M.K.
