PRESIDENT S REPORT It is with great pleasure that I present my fifth President s Report. The 2012/13 season saw the Association take the next steps to ensure the longevity of the game of cricket in the St George area. Thanks to everyone who helped make the season a success, with the introduction of a T30 program for senior players who have trouble with availability on a weekly basis due to family and work commitments in particular. In the lower 10 and 12 Grades we changed rules to allow for more equitable participation. This is an area where in the past teams had one or two players who dominated. By ensuring equitable participation, we are allowing all players the chance to perform. For cricket to survive some traditions do have to make way for modern day thinking and these measures are the first of many for the association. I know that next season further refinements are planned for all competitions. On a sad note, the start of the season saw the passing of long term Patron and former Georges River Penshurst President Fred McKinnon. Fred had been a member of the association since the 50 s as a player before moving onto the Presidency, a position where he contributed with passion to establishing a strong Association. As a player, he was a strong wicket keeper and batsman who enjoyed local success with his Penshurst Club. He also played in the first winning Martin Shield team for Georges River Penshurst. He had been a Patron for 20 seasons and was about to start his 21 st with his untimely death. The Association Executive took sometime before appointing two new Patrons. We welcome former President Kevin Greene and long term Life Member John Yates to the role. January saw the passing of former Umpire and Junior Committee member, Neville Ebsworth. Neville simply oozed cricket, taking on responsibilities of helping his sons as they played juniors for St Joseph s Riverwood and De La Salle Kingsgrove, even taking on the role of secretary of both clubs. He was a member of the Junior committee before he took up umpiring, first with the Association and then moving through the Grade ranks to First Grade. His best umpiring experience was no-balling Geoff Lawson 5 times in an over! Our sympathies are extended to both families on their loss in the season and to all other families who had a loved one pass away. For this season completed, I would like to acknowledge the contributions of Secretary, Janelle Carew, and Treasurer, Rick Francis. These two committee members have worked tirelessly for the Association and without their support, the Association would not be in the great shape it is today. I would like to thank the other Executive Committee members for their support and tireless work throughout the season. First, Junior Competition Secretary, Danny Williams and Ron Ryan as Senior Competition Secretary who both kept a good watch over the progress of the Competitions. Matt Boland as Junior Registrar and Senior Registrar Ken Tildsley supported both competitions with their expertise. Assistant Secretary, Peter Smith, Vice President Graeme Fleming, Mick Able, and Michael Venn, my thanks as well for your contributions to the Association. Thanks to Rick Francis, Rep Team Coordinator, for organising the Representative Teams for the season. Our Representative program started in August with the Junior Development squads. These squads, thanks to the support of St George DCC and Kingsgrove Sports Academy, have been vital in preparing our elite cricketers for the rigours of the Representative Program. On the field, we were not successful in winning any competitions but was pleasing to note that the Watson Shield team competed in the playoffs. This was the first time this team has competed in this level since the Foster Shield so well done. At the other end of the scale, it was also pleasing to see that that our tradition of having competitive teams in the Foster Shield continued with this team also making the playoffs. Well done to the Cawsey Shield team who also made the playoffs, just falling short to eventual premiers Sutherland in the semi-final. This was this teams first ever loss in a play off series after 6 previous games. Congratulations must go to Colin D arcy who achieved the NSWDCA Weblin Shield Player of the Year Award and the Weblin Shield Batting Award. I would like to express my thanks to the coaches and managers of all our Representative Teams but even bigger thanks to the players and families for representing the Association in such an outstanding manner. The Martin Shield team, although losing three close games, were outstanding representatives of the association. We do look forward to next year where the Committee has decided to put more effort in the senior representative competitions. The Association thanks go to the NSWDCA for providing opportunity for all the representative competitions, especially to the Executive Officer Eric Myatt for his outstanding organisation. Locally, all competitions were close. In the juniors, with Blast and increased flexible arrangements in how some of the lower junior grades were organised, offered some exciting chases for semi final spots. I must give my personal congratulations to winners of our Benchmark Competitions: Penshurst West for winning the 16A Premiership and Illawarra Catholic Club for securing the First Grade trophy for the ninth time in eleven seasons. More thanks must go Tom Davies, who in his role of Publicity Officer, ensured that the web page was kept up to date in terms of the points score and publicity results. This season, both Tom and myself, continued to work hard on the website and we must thank all the clubs who took on the challenge of putting the results on the website every week. This year we established a Facebook page to help disseminate information and we are looking at establishing a Twitter account for the upcoming season.

While we were unsuccessful at a representative level this season, this could not be the case of our cricket partners, St George DCC. The Club managed three flags, including the Club Championship, 1 st Grade and 4 th Grade, while runners up in 5 th Grade. What is pleasing is the large number of local juniors who contributed to all these successes. This was also seen with the Green Shield team where every player was a local junior from our Association. This team made the playoffs for the second year in a row. We offer our congratulations to Executive Officer, Jon Jobson and President, Kevin Greene, for their continued support and interest. Thanks must also go to the Umpires League and their executive. While our umpire numbers on a weekly basis are not strong, the support provided to us during the representative season is outstanding. I thank President Roger Spindler, Secretary Roger Ridway, Appointments Officer Ron Ryan and Delegate Graeme Fleming for their work. Again this season, we partnered with the Sydney 6 ers in BBL2. With former juniors Moises Henriques and Kurtis Patterson in their team, it was a good fit for us. While they won the World Championship it wasn t a good local season for the team in Mengenta. Thanks go to their administration for their support, which included a little monetary value and tickets to home games. Finally, the Association thanks our sponsors: Kingsgrove Sports Store, A.G. Thompson s (Kookaburra), Club Rivers, The Maso s Club, Club Central, Oatley Hotel, Punchbowl Bus Company, Veolia Transport, Bresnahan s Butchers and the St George Bank. Without their support we would not be able to provide a representative program that is of no cost to the participants as well as manageable registration, playing and administration costs. Please support our sponsors as much as they support us. Of course, the three major sponsors of the Association are the councils: Hurstville City Council, Kogarah City Council and Rockdale City Council. Without their support in providing the grounds and maintenance, we would not be able to run the many opportunities for cricket that we provide. We thank the Mayors and Officers of the councils for their continued support. The 2013/14 season will see a continuation of change and direction for the Association as we look to build and strengthen cricket in the St George area. See you all there. Jeff Evans PRESIDENT SECRETARY S REPORT As I write this, my last report, I look back on my time as Association Secretary with good memories, from allowing helicopters to land at Gannons Park to allow an elderly neighbour to celebrate a special birthday present from his family to attending what I hope will be the first of a regular road show by Cricket Australia touching base with the grass roots of the game. This season has been no different with the successful T30 competition on Sundays, the joint 1 st and 2 nd grade in the senior competition to provide a variety of game play because of the low numbers of graded teams and a highly competitive junior competition. As has been my experience over the past few years the committee has worked hard at ensuring all competitions have run smoothly and fairly and over the past few weeks the current outgoing committee have been working hard on competition rule changes. I d like to thank the committee of the 2012/2013 season Jeff Evans, Graeme Fleming, Rick Francis, Peter Smith, Tom Davies, Ron Ryan, Ken Tildsley, Danny Williams, Michael Venn and Mick Abel. Over my time I have worked closely with our Councils, Hurstville (Christine Irwin), Kogarah (Judith Howes) and Rockdale (Hayley Suwistra). These ladies have always appreciated the information about damage or use issues provided by you to me and then passed on to them. As they have said to me, Council does have eyes out there, being Council Rangers, but they can t be at every ground every minute of the day. Your continued reporting to me of damages to the pitches, damage to run ups, issues with drainage or toilet facilities helps the Association work closely with our Councils. All Councils have continued to tell me over the years that they love it when Summer season starts as we provide information on Council grounds to Council rather than complaining. I wish the incoming Secretary the best of luck, I will be happy to answer any questions that arise as did my predecessors, Richard Cheney and Mark Keene who were a great help to me when I started out. I wish the incoming Committee the best of luck. The rule changes that have been worked on will ensure a greater competition for our Association. Finally, I wish all our players, Coaches, Managers, Scorers, and Clubs the best of luck for the upcoming season. Janelle Carew Association Secretary

We were also able to ensure that all NSWDCA Inter-Association matches were provided with an official umpire. This was achieved with the assistance of NSWCU&SA members Daniel Brightwell and Steve Starks who were able to re-schedule their work commitments to help us out. I sincerely thank my fellow committee members and officers for their efforts throughout the season, as well as those members who regularly attended our monthly General Meetings. To all teams and players in our district, thanks for the respect and sportsmanship that was shown to officiating umpires and your opposition teams throughout the season. On behalf of myself and all our Members, I thank Roger Ridgway our Secretary and Ron Ryan our Appointments Officer for their great work throughout the season.

We look forward to continuing our good relationship with the Executive Committee of GRSGDCA and to another successful season again next year. Roger Spindler President VALE FRED McKINNON It is with great sadness that the start of the season saw the passing of our Patron, Mr Fred McKinnon. Fred had a long history with the Association: first as a player, then an administrator. Fred played most of his cricket with The Penshurst Cricket Club in the Georges River Penshurst Competition in the 50 s through to the 70 s. He was the Captain of the first ever side from Georges River Penshurst to win the Martin Shield in 1968/69. Fred was a well-accomplished batsman and keeper throughout his time as a park cricketer. When Fred stopped playing, he turned to administration becoming president of the Georges River Penshurst Association in 1969/70 and served in that position until 1986/87. He had a great wit and many of us remember the way he controlled meetings with good speed and authority, though this was more to allow him time to play the pokies with his friend Ron Gee. He was duly appointed Patron in 1987/88 until his passing this season. It has been in recent years that Fred s health has deteriorated but he still managed to attend a couple of our presentations and AGM s. As a mark of respect, all teams observed a minutes silence prior to the commencement of all games on Saturday, 1 September He will be missed dearly.

KEITH COMPTON SPIRIT OF CRICKET MEDAL In 2010, the Management Committee agreed to institute a Spirit of Cricket award to commemorate the many years of service given by the late Keith Compton as an administrator and Patron of our Association. It was the express wish of the Compton family that the award be known as the Keith Compton Spirit of Cricket Award. After discussions with Life Members and fellow club administrators who had known and worked with Keith over many years, to determine an appropriate recipient and applicable criteria for such an award, the unanimous conclusion was that: (1) players are already more than adequately catered for with various individual performance and team awards and that the addition of another player award would not lend the Keith Compton Spirit of Cricket award the prestige that it deserves; (2) the Spirit of Cricket represents an overall belief based on a number of traditional values associated with the game, and is not just performance related; and (3) the award should recognize the efforts of a volunteer club coach or manager who is primarily responsible for fostering the values associated with the Spirit of the Game each Saturday morning with the young players under their control. Volunteer coaches are the lifeblood of junior cricket and their efforts, essentially, go unrecognized. The Award: To be eligible for the award the following criteria must be met: The nominee must be a volunteer coach, manager or official involved with Junior cricket. Years of service may be considered appropriate. The nominee has demonstrated appropriate codes of behaviour on the field and encouraged their players to do the same. The nominee has displayed control and shown respect for other coaches and players. The nominee operates within the rules and Spirit of the game and teaches their players to do the same. The nominee avoids overplaying talented or favourite players and ensures that all players receive equal opportunity to bat, bowl and field. The nominee is considered by their opposition equivalents to be a worthy recipient of the award. Past Recipients: Roger Ridgway Matt Boland Graeme Fleming Michael Abel

UNDER 16A GRADE COMPETITION RESULTS 6 teams participated in the 16A competition this season. Penshurst West and South Hurstville Carss Park were 14A finalists and appeared to be the main contenders for the Premiership. Ramsgate RSL was a very competitive team although somewhat hampered by player availability. Kingsgrove CC had picked up players from St George Leagues and Beverly Hills, and had a very strong bowling attack. ICC was made up of mainly first year players and will be a strong team next season. Lugarno Sports made up the 6 th team after assistance from Mortdale Hts. Lugarno struggled but was competitive. In the Qualifying semi-final Penshurst West easily accounted for SHCP. In the Elimination semi-final Kingsgrove s bowling attack restricted Ramsgate to a moderate total which was chased down for the loss of only 4 wickets. SHCP scored a very defendable 150 on a very slow Olds Park 1. Kingsgrove s scoring was restricted by tight bowling in the first 30 overs and never really threatened to overtake SHCP. The Final saw a repeat of the 14A Final. Aggressive batting resulted Penshurst West scoring an imposing 220 on a somewhat faster Olds Park 1. On this occasion SHCP found the task too difficult and fell some 70 runs short. This reversed the result from the corresponding match 2 seasons before. Kingsgrove, Penshurst West, Ramsgate RSL and Illawarra Catholic Club made up the 6, with Kingsgrove and Penshurst West presenting the greatest threat to Minor Premiers Beverly Hills (Blue). A high scoring Qualifying semi-final saw BHE (blue) defeat Kingsgrove CC to go through to the Final. The elimination semi-final was a more lop-sided affair as the points table suggested, with Penshurst West easily defeating Ramsgate RSL. The Preliminary Final was a very close match with only 7 runs separating the 2 teams. Penshurst West was victorious and went on to the Final. The strong batting of the Beverly Hills (blue) allowed them to post a total that proved just beyond Penshurst West. They proved to be worthy premiers. 21 UNDER 14A GRADE COMPETITION RESULTS While Kingsgrove CC went through the preliminary rounds undefeated to finish as minor premiers, there was a three way battle at the top of the ladder between them, Penshurst West and Ramsgate RSL Youth. In two low scoring semi-finals, Kingsgrove (aided by an amazing hat-trick from Caleb Bartier) defeated Penshurst West, and Ramsgate RSL Youth accounted for South Hurstville RSL. Ramsgate continued its strong form to record a Preliminary Final win over Penshurst West then managed to overcome Kingsgrove to win the Premiership. 25 COMPETITION RESULTS Matt Boland Recorder KINGSGROVE CC (Green) U14B PREMIERSHIP 2012/2013 UNDER 14C GRADE Six teams competed in 14C competition. Two teams from the same club, Mortdale Heights (Blue and White), lead from the start and battled it out for minor premiership. Additional interest in the competition structure came from South Hurstville RSL Ramsgate RSL Youth fielding a combined team while Kingsgrove fielded a combined team after St George Leagues merged into that club. Mortdale Heights (Blue) went through the preliminary competition undefeated, but a strong performance from the Mortdale Heights (Whites) in the major semi-final reversed two earlier season losses. After winning against the South Hurstville/Ramsgate side, the Mortdale Heights (Blues) again met with the (Whites) to decide the title. The (Whites) however proved that the semi-final result was no fluke as they again won through to win the Premiership. Despite the dominance of two teams, there were some closely fought games and the competition was played with great spirits and a high level of sportsmanship. Each team had two byes. Kingsgrove (Blue) went through the preliminary rounds undefeated. The battle for the places went down to the last round. The semi-finals went according to place on ladder. Kingsgrove (Blue) and Beverly Hills Eagles won their respective games. Then in the preliminary final Mortdale Heights played well and won the right to play in the final. In the final, Mortdale Heights inflicted Kingsgrove (Blue) their only loss of the season by restricting their score through good bowling. Despite the dominance of Kingsgrove (Blue) there were close games and all teams had a chance of winning. Games were played with great spirit and a high level of sportsmanship. Congratulations to all players and coaches. 34 COMPETITION RESULTS MORTDALE HEIGHTS U12C PREMIERSHIP 2012/2013 UNDER 10A GRADE Following the regrading of Illawarra Catholic Club team to 10Bs after round 3, there remained three teams in the 10A competition Kingsgrove, Penshurst West and South Hurstville RSL Carss Park. Despite this small number of participants, the competition was of high interest throughout, with no team being able to dominate and several close results being recorded. With insufficient numbers to allow for semi-finals, the eventual 10A premier was decided after the two top teams, South Hurstville RSL Carss Park and Penshurst West played off in the Grand Final. In a game typical of the season, a hard fought match resulted in a win to the South Hurstville RSL Carss Park. Congratulations to all teams on the high standard of play throughout the season, and to Premiers South Hurstville RSL Carss Park.
