5 PRESIDENT S REPORT The season in review provided a number of challenges for Clubs most notably in maintaining playing strength. While competition numbers remained stable there is no doubt junior clubs have to work hard to attract players while senior clubs struggle with players ability to commit each Saturday due to work and other activities. With these thoughts in mind I congratulate the management of all Clubs on their dedication to providing the environment where players of all ages can enjoy their cricket, maintaining and building friendships and most importantly engage in healthy physical and social activity. The Association Committee continue to look at ways to promote our great game and it was encouraging to see a strong increase in U/8 registrations and also the number of junior players continuing into the senior ranks. A number of new In2Cricket centres were started during the season and we hope to see many of these young players joining clubs next season. Again this year I d like to thank the many external organisations who provide assistance to cricket in our District. Our sponsors many of whom are very long term, are extremely generous with their financial contributions, while our local Councils, Hurstville, Kogarah and Rockdale continue to provide the grounds and training facilities. We are also indebted to our Umpires League, NSW Districts and Cricket NSW for their assistance. As you read through this report you will note many outstanding individual and team achievements and I congratulate all winning teams and individual award winners on their success and thank coaches, managers, scorers and team officials for their contributions. You will also note the reports of our representative teams. Two sides, Watson and Creak, made the finals series in what are always tough competitions. I m sure our players learnt a lot from the experience of playing with the best against the best. I thank our managers and coaches for their hard work with the players and also our Rep Team Co-ordinator, Rick Francis for his oversight of the representative program. After 13 years in the role our Auditor, Geoff Thoroughgood has decided to stand down. Prior to this position Geoff was the Senior Association Treasurer for 12 seasons. We are fortunate to have benefitted from his outstanding knowledge and ability and sincerely thank Geoff for his outstanding contribution. In conclusion I would like to thank club delegates and the Committee for their support and work throughout the season. Our secretarial responsibilities were in the hands of the St George DCC CEO, Jon Jobson and we thank Jon and the Club for this assistance. Competition Secretaries, Ron Ryan and Danny Williams with the support of Registrars Ken Tildsley and Matt Boland ensured the competitions ran smoothly. Assistant Secretary, Peter Smith, Treasurer, Rick Francis and Publicity Officer, Tom Davies handled their roles efficiently. Mick Abel and Michael Venn again served on the committee and were strong contributors. Jeff Evans PRESIDENT

This number includes 3 active Life Members and 19 members who are joint members of our League and NSWCU&SA. The number of members available to actively officiate each week averaged 4-6, generally permitting coverage of one grade each round, with each grade receiving official umpires at least 3 times, in some cases 4 times, throughout the competition rounds. We were also able to ensure that all NSWDCA Inter-Association matches in which our Association participated were provided with an official umpire. I sincerely thank my fellow executive committee members and other officers for their efforts in maintaining the smooth running of our League throughout the season, as well as those members who regularly attended our monthly General Meetings. At the end of the season we were able to provide all Semi Final matches with 1 official umpire and all Preliminary Final matches with 2 official umpires. This was achieved with the assistance of Greg Stubbings from Mortdale Heights CC and we sincerely thank Greg and his Club for their contribution. 8 Within the local competition congratulations go to Ziad Abbas from Arncliffe Banksia Sports Club for winning the Jim Mitchell Trophy for Best and Fairest player in 1 st Grade competition. This trophy is awarded on a points basis each game as determined by the Umpires League. Finally, our gratitude is extended to NSWCUSA for their continued support of our League, particularly through their Administration Manager Troy Penman and Liaison Officer Neil Findlay. We look forward to continuing our good relationship with the Executive Committee of GRSGDCA and to another successful season again next year. Roger Spindler President VALE LIFE MEMBER JACK STANTON In April this year Jack Stanton, one of our Life Members, lost his battle with illness. He was just short of his 87 th birthday. Jack was awarded Life Membership of the Georges River Penshurst Boys Competition in 1981, having served nine years on the Association Executive including six years as Competition Secretary. As the father of three boys Jack managed numerous junior sides for ICC (where he was also a Life Member and Patron), continuing this commitment after his sons had graduated to the senior ranks. He was also appointed by the Association to select and manage various representative teams. Jack s involvement in local cricket continued to the Grade Club where he served on the Management Committee for many years and was also awarded Life Membership. In the fledgling years of the GRP Juniors and indeed ICC Jack Stanton worked tirelessly to promote cricket, helping to build the strong foundations of both organisations. His priority was always the welfare of the players and maintaining their love of the game. Jack Stanton was a wonderful servant of cricket within the St George District and the Association extends its heartfelt sympathy to his wife Irene, three sons Phil, Anthony and Chris and their families.

9 KEITH COMPTON SPIRIT OF CRICKET MEDAL In 2010, the Management Committee agreed to institute a Spirit of Cricket award to commemorate the many years of service given by the late Keith Compton as an administrator and Patron of our Association. It was the express wish of the Compton family that the award be known as the Keith Compton Spirit of Cricket Award. After discussions with Life Members and fellow club administrators who had known and worked with Keith over many years, to determine an appropriate recipient and applicable criteria for such an award, the unanimous conclusion was that: (1) players are already more than adequately catered for with various individual performance and team awards and that the addition of another player award would not lend the Keith Compton Spirit of Cricket award the prestige that it deserves; (2) the Spirit of Cricket represents an overall belief based on a number of traditional values associated with the game, and is not just performance related; and (3) the award should recognize the efforts of a volunteer club coach or manager who is primarily responsible for fostering the values associated with the Spirit of the Game each Saturday morning with the young players under their control. Volunteer coaches are the lifeblood of junior cricket and their efforts, essentially, go unrecognized. The Award: To be eligible for the award the following criteria must be met: The nominee must be a volunteer coach, manager or official involved with Junior cricket. Years of service may be considered appropriate. The nominee has demonstrated appropriate codes of behaviour on the field and encouraged their players to do the same. The nominee has displayed control and shown respect for other coaches and players. The nominee operates within the rules and Spirit of the game and teaches their players to do the same. The nominee avoids overplaying talented or favourite players and ensures that all players receive equal opportunity to bat, bowl and field. The nominee is considered by their opposition equivalents to be a worthy recipient of the award. Past Recipients: Roger Ridgway Matt Boland Graeme Fleming Michael Abel Rick Francis

18 JUNIOR COMPETITION RESULTS UNDER 16A GRADE 7 teams participated in the 16A competition this season. Consequently there were a number of byes and one-day matches in this competition. The competition was evenly balanced with any of the top teams capable of beating the other on their day. Penshurst West were the 16A premiers in 2012/13 and had a well-balanced side. ICC had a very strong bowling attack, particularly spinners. ICC s batting was solid but not their strength. Lugarno had a strong team but only played with a full team on one occasion. This proved to be their undoing in the semi-final. They were, however, the only team to defeat Penshurst West. Ramsgate RSL featured some outstanding batting and a solid bowling attack. Beverly Hills Eagles were 16B premiers and went close to making the semi-finals. The two Kingsgrove teams struggled, player availability at times being an issue. With talented players spread across the two teams, they might have performed better if one combined team had entered the competition. Each match in the finals series was a nail-biter, reflecting the closeness of the competition. In the qualifying semi-final Penshurst West defended a moderate total against ICC, having also defeated ICC in the last round of the competition. In the elimination semi-final, excellent Ramsgate RSL bowling only allowed two Lugarno batsmen to make any impression on the scorers. After being 1/34, Lugarno had RRSL 6/63. A dropped catch, and fielding initially with 7 players, proved too difficult for Lugarno. In the preliminary final ICC scored what seemed a very attainable 119. Some excellent bowling and fielding proved too much for RSL and ICC advanced to the grand final. This would be the fourth match between these two teams. The grand final proved to be an agonisingly close affair for both teams. ICC batted first and was dismissed for 114. Penshurst West received bonus overs which proved to be crucial to the final result. Penshurst West lost wickets in the middle order to be 9/95. A last wicket partnership of 22- with the only 4 of the match struck off the second last ball of the match- saw the minor premiers home. This was probably a fitting result as Penshurst West had defeated ICC in their three previous encounters. 21 UNDER 16B GRADE A 5 team competition, with consequent byes, saw South Hurstville RSL/Carss Park (SHRSLCP) go through the preliminary rounds undefeated. Kingsgrove Cricket Club and Beverly Hills Eagles (K/BHE) provided a combined team that was the main threat to SHRSLCP, with Ramsgate RSL and Penshurst West making up the semi-finalists. Illawarra Catholic Club struggled, but without their participation the 16Bs would have been a 4 team competition, so their contribution was valuable to all teams. The semi-finals saw K/BHE inflict the only defeat on the previously undefeated SHRSLCP. The minor semi-final featured some outstanding batting performances. Penshurst West advanced to the preliminary final. As form suggested, SHRSLCP proved too strong and easily defeated Penshurst West. The grand final was played between the 2 highest ranked teams and was a replay of the major semi-final. On this occasion SHRSLCP were far too strong for K/BHE. 23 SOUTH HURSTVILLE RSL CARSS PARK U16B PREMIERS 2013/2014

24 UNDER 14A GRADE Following the re-grading of the second Kingsgrove team to B Grade, five teams competed for the A grade premiership. Despite Kingsgrove going through undefeated, they were involved in a few close results, while remaining teams had some great games in mostly very even contests - highlighted by a dramatic semi-final tied result between Illawarra Catholic Club and Penshurst West which resulted in the latter going through to the preliminary final. The grand final also provided much drama when Kingsgrove staged an 18 run last wicket partnership to nudge out Penshurst West with four balls remaining. 27 UNDER 14B GRADE The 14B's season involved a couple of radical changes to the 'traditional' past. Firstly, as at start of season only nine teams comprised the lower grades and the competition was played as one grade, B. Secondly, significantly the format of play was changed to '4 Quarter'. Following the re-grade of the (subsequent) Kingsgrove White team from A Grade, the competition expanded to 10 sides. Competition remained competitive throughout, with no one or two teams dominating, especially at the top of the ladder. In an exciting grand final, South Hurstville RSL / Carss Park managed to defeat Ramsgate RSL Blue by the barest of margins to win the pennant. 30 UNDER 12A GRADE The 12A competition featured some excellent games, and although dominated by the Kingsgrove Green team which went through the preliminary rounds undefeated, there were some close and high quality games played. The battle for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th spots were not decided until the completion of the final rounds, with South Hurstville RSL/Carss Park and Illawarra Catholic Club having to be separated by quotient points for 2nd position on the ladder. Penshurst West and Illawarra Catholic Club staged an exciting semi-final before Illawarra won through to play Kingsgrove Green in the grand final, with the latter going on to a deserved win to take the title. 36 UNDER 10A GRADE Six teams competed in the 10A season. The competition provide a deal of excitement with four teams battling it out for 3rd and 4th spots behind Kingsgrove Green and Penshurst West in the preliminary rounds. Three teams finished on equal points and the play-off positions required quotient points to determine the semi-final draw. All teams remained competitive throughout, with several close battles fought out to the last few overs for results. Kingsgrove Green and Penshurst West met in the grand final in which the loss of early wickets cost Penshurst West and despite a middle order fight back, and taking some late wickets themselves, went down to a strong Kingsgrove team.
