Woolam Dean Lee Research and Extension Center 8105 Tom Bowman Drive Alexandria, Louisiana Much of the research reported herein is preliminary. Many of the herbicides discussed have been evaluated in a limited number of field experiments and will require further evaluation and/or registration before their usefulness to producers can be accurately determined. Reproduction of any portion of this report should contain the complete source of information. Louisiana State University Agricultural Center Dr. William B. 6 Introduction This report summarizes the 2012 corn, cotton, grain sorghum, soybean, wheat, and burndown research experiments conducted in the Red River Valley of Louisiana. All experiments were conducted at the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center (LSU AgCenter) Dean Lee Research and Extension Center in Alexandria. This information is prepared for the use of industry cooperators, colleagues at other universities, and other interested persons. The interpretation of these data may change after additional experimentation. The information presented is not an endorsement or recommendation, is intended for personal use, and may not be reproduced without permission. For additional information and specific recommendations for weed control in crops, refer to the current issue of the Louisiana Suggested Chemical Weed Control Guide, Publication 1565, produced by the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service. Spraying methods are outlined for each individual experiment. Abbreviations, Bayer weed codes, rainfall data, and a list of all chemicals used in this research are listed in the Appendices. Trade names were used throughout this report for clarity. Where trade names were not available, the pesticides are listed by experimental number. Application rates are expressed as units of active ingredient (ai), acid equivalent (ae), or product amount. We express our sincere appreciation to the following for their assistance in this research: Dr. Guy B. Padgett (Central Region Director) Dr. Ronnie Levy (Soybean Extension Specialist) Darrell Franks (Farm Manager Dean Lee Research and Extension Center) Staff of the LSU AgCenter Dean Lee Research and Extension Center The Louisiana Soybean and Feed Grains Research and Promotion Board funded substantial portions of the research reported in this publication. Members are: Raymond Schexnayder, Jr., Ventress (Chairman) J. K. Bordelon, Moreauville (Vice Chairman) Charles Cannatella, Melville (Secretary-Treasurer) Leo Franchebois, Opelousas Jerry Hunter, Delhi Joey Olivier, Arnaudville Carlos Polotzola, Melville Robert Thevis, Simmesport i
7 Darrell Vandeven, St. Joseph Thomas Ater, Ferriday The following organizations provided support and/or supplied pesticides or seed for establishment and maintenance of this research: AMVAC Chem. Corp. BASF Corporation Bayer CropScience Cheminova Cotton Incorporated Dow AgroSciences LLC DuPont Crop Protection FMC Corporation Loveland Products, Inc. Makhteshim Agan of North America, Inc. Monsanto Corporation Nichino America, Inc. Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. SePRO Corporation Syngenta Crop Protection, Inc. Valent U.S.A. Corporation Their support of the Weed Science Project at the Dean Lee Research and Extension Center is greatly appreciated. ii
8 METHODS FOR 2012 WEED SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS Unless otherwise noted, experiments in this report were arranged as a randomized complete block with four replications. Plots were four, 38-inch rows were all four rows were treated. Herbicides were applied with a tractormounted compressed-air spraying system traveling at 3.5 mph. Nozzle tips used in preemergence and postemergence over-the-top applications were DG11002, two nozzles per row, using a spraying pressure of 37 psi and diluent of 15 gpa. Post-directed and layby applications were sprayed with a backpack sprayer using Double-Outlet Flat spray tip using a spraying pressure of 40 psi and diluent of 15 gpa. Crop injury and herbicide efficacy were visually estimated on a scale of 0 to 100% where 0 indicates no crop injury or weed control and 100 is equal to crop death or complete weed control. The ratings were tabulated and means computed for each crop and weed species having sufficient density and distribution in the experimental area. Crop yields were determined by harvesting the center two rows of each four row plot. Corn and grain sorghum grain weights were adjusted to 15% moisture content. Soybean weights were adjusted to 13% moisture content. Data presented in this report are summarized and statistically analyzed with the Agricultural Research Manager software program (v.8.5.0) by Gylling Data Management, Inc., Brookings, South Dakota. iii
