Dear Educator: The is pleased to announce our new Educational Programming series for grades Beginning in January 2016, we will offer school field trips which have been designed to educate students on the unique history Llano del Rio Co-operative Colony, located here, in the highlands of western Louisiana from Each program will feature an interactive learning activity designed for a specific age group and will last approximately 2 hours, followed by a tour museum. Admission to the museum is free, and to make your visit even easier, the Vernon Parish Tourism Commission will offer bus grants for the school year which we hope will help offset any financial burdens you may encounter when planning your trip. Sincerely, Mary Ann Fussell Manager
About the Museum The is a joint venture Vernon Parish Tourism Commission and the Town of New Llano. Admission: FREE Hours: Tuesday-Friday 10 AM 4 PM Tours outside these hours may be arranged by calling during office hours. 4 Museum Mission Statement The is committed to preserving the legacy Llano del Rio Co-operative Colony, created by former Labor lawyer and Socialist politician, Job Harriman. The museum aims to share the untold stories colonists and their efforts to prove that a co-operative lifestyle was superior to that of a capitalistic society early twentieth century. To enhance this experience, the museum may, at times, offer historical programs that are of national or international interest. The subject for these programs will always connect to the colony/colonists in some way and must serve to heighten understanding times in which they existed.
A Brief History Job Harriman Llano Co-operative Store The Llano del Rio Co-operative Colony was created in California by Job Harriman, a successful Labor lawyer and popular Socialist speaker/politician. It worked like this everyone purchased their membership and then became an equal owner in the colony. They owned all the industries which they ran themselves, all the homes where they provided water and electricity for themselves, even all the entertainments which they produced themselves. Everyone worked together to provide whatever the members needed. Although Harriman and many colonists were Socialist, it was not a requirement for membership. Members did have to agree to live co-operatively and abide by the Golden Rule, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Two newspapers were printed weekly The colony moved to Louisiana in 1917 and lasted until 1937 when a variety of problems combined to force them into bankruptcy. All their land, along with the town and more than sixty businesses were sold for pennies on the dollar. Group of Colonists Museum
Reader s Theater R e c o m m e n d e d fo r G ra d e s 7-12 Time Allowance: Approximately 2 hours Inside the tells the story New Llano Co-operative Colony using actual quotes from books and newspapers time. Teachers will assign the few named parts; all remaining students will be part Chorus and will simply take turns reading the script. Students will then be allowed to tour the museum where they will see artifacts from the colony and explore the interactive map. In addition, as part our field trip program, students will be able to pose for one photo in front of our GoodEye green screen. We ll send them in for processing and when they re returned, we ll print one souvenir photo for each member class. We are located across the street from the New Llano Community Park which has a covered pavilion and would be a great location for a picnic lunch, weather permitting. During inclement weather, bag lunches could be eaten in the meeting room at the museum.
GoodEye Photo Station Take a picture in front of our green screen of your friends with any digital camera or smart phone.
