BILL BOEHLERT, PRESIDENT Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year to everyone! Hopefully your holiday season went well, and you are ready to face Most of us have a long list of personal goals for 2012, but for those of you whose list of resolutions is woefully short, I have a great addition volunteer! The success of our club, like that of so many organizations, depends on the hard work and high spirits of its members. The more people involved, the more successful and enjoyable the enterprise. Luckily, we have dozens of spots for everyone, no matter how little time or expertise you think you have. Several events are coming up that require volunteers. In February the LBCC will be hosting its annual Southwestern Tournament. This is a great opportunity to see some of the greatest casters on the West Coast Steve Rajeff, Chris Korich, Henry Mittel, as well as many of our own stars. We need judges, scorekeepers, people to set up and decorate, and many other folks to run the tourney as professionally as we always have. Talk to our Captain, Jeff Gross, to secure a position. In March we have two opportunities to show the flag the Pasadena Flyfishing Show and the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach. In our booth we will need people to explain our club s activities, to tie flies, extol the merits of fly fishing, and to generally put on a good face for the public. Additionally, you get to see all the other exhibits and stay abreast of events in the world of fly fishing. Talk to John Stine and Rick Long about volunteering. In March we also have our Casting Instructors Clinic, which trains club members to be instructors in the Beginning Casting Clinic in April. An obvious collateral benefit is that this clinic will improve your casting as well. Gary Charles is the chairman. For those who would like to commit for a longer term, we have several on-going efforts. Carole Katz heads up Project Healing Waters, and always welcomes volunteers to help our wounded veterans with fly tying, casting, rod-building, and fishing. Chuck Moore conducts a monthly trip to the West Fork of the San Gabriel that includes conservation work and fishing on that beautiful stream. Steve Blair is putting together a conservation committee to monitor the challenges to our environment and especially our fisheries. Leader s Line continues on page 2

2 TARGET TALK JANUARY 2012 Leader s Line continued from page 1 If you are interested in the wider world of fly fishing, we are looking for a representative to the Southwest Council of the Fly Fishing Federation. This organization emphasizes the conservation and restoration of our fisheries. It also has an educational role in promoting our sport. Eddie Madrid, our 2 nd Vice President, is always looking for people to lead the monthly fishing trips. If you have a favorite fishing hole that you would like to share with club members, volunteer to take charge of a trip. If you are ready for a real challenge, the nominating committee is scouting around for potential new board members. This is somewhat more demanding in terms of time and commitment, but the rewards are proportionally great. Believe me, you will get to work with wonderful folks and really find out what a outstanding organization we have. So, get involved in Join us on our trips, start casting on Sundays, come to the meetings, and volunteer! See you at the pond. OFFICERS PRESIDENT Bill Boehlert (714) ST VICE PRESIDENT Jim Thomason (626) ND VICE PRESIDENT Eddie Madrid (562) RECORDING SECRETARY Joseph Austin (310) CORRESPONDING SECRETARY Howard Uller (310) CAPTAIN Jeff Gross (562) TREASURER Joseph Gustaff (562) Irvine Lake Trip Report EDDIE MADRID, 2 ND VICE PRESIDENT The Club's Irvine Lake trip was attended by Bill Boehlert, Cecil Odell, Gary Sr. and Jr. Runnells, Eddie Madrid and Keith. The weather was great, but fishing was slow at best. About half a dozen fish were landed between the entire LBCC team. Maybe we need to better understand stillwater fishing. In our own defense the entire lake was fishing very slow. 4 4 TARGET TALK JANUARY 2012 Conservation Update: Proposed Fishing Closures on Regional Waters TIM BARTLEY, SWCFFF CONSERVATION CHAIRMAN Access to fishing on several regional streams may receive a temporary reprieve. However, based on opinions expressed by California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) officials, some streams face potential closures to fishing in the future. In 2005, the federal government granted endangered status to all anadromous Southern California steelhead located below impassable barriers to migration (all fish with access to the ocean). In order to protect the endangered steelhead, fishing is banned in these waters. Resident trout above impassable barriers (dams) are not considered endangered. Thus, fishing has been allowed on upper sections of the Ventura River and Santa Clara River watersheds. Earlier this year, the Environmental Defense Center (EDC), a Santa Barbara legal firm and long-term advocates for steelhead, submitted a Request for Emergency Closure on the Sisquoc River (Santa Barbara County), Sespe Creek above Alder Creek (Ventura County), and the North Fork of Matilija Creek (Ventura County). EDC argued that catch and release fishing is take of under the Endangered Species Act, and is a direct threat to the endangered Southern California steelhead in these streams. The Sisquoc River is a tributary of the Santa Maria River. The Environmental Defense Center argued that there are no impassable barriers within Steelhead caught on the Sespe River, circa 1912 the river. DFG officials confirm that the Sisquoc River had been improperly categorized during a survey in Although lower portions of the river are susceptible to seasonal intermittent halts in flow, the river has no impassible barriers to ocean migration. The agency will recommend that the Sisquoc River be closed to all fishing in compliance with the Endangered Species Act. Sespe Creek is a tributary of the Santa Clara River in Ventura County. Prior to recommending any changes in fishing regulations, DFG intends to review all barriers in the Santa Clara River watershed with respect to fish passage. It seems unlikely that any immediate action will be taken. However, as the result of a recent legal settlement, a new fish passage device will be constructed at the Vern Freeman Diversion, a major barrier on the lower section of the Santa Clara River. If the new fish passage device is certified, waters above the Vern Freeman Diversion could be closed to fishing in compliance with the Endangered Species Act. The North Fork of Matilija Creek is a main tributary of the Ventura River. Most consider barriers in this watershed to be impassable, and a fishing closure would seem unlikely. However, fishing regulations currently allow a five fish take on the NF Matilija. DFG will review the barriers in this watershed, and consider changing the regulation to zero limit, barbless hook, artificial only. DFG indicated that the Request for Emergency Closure, submitted by EDC, does not warrant emergency consideration and immediate changes will not be recommended. However, DFG will recommend closure of the Sisquoc River as part of the agency s triennial

TARGET TALK JANUARY review process. Pending reviews of barriers, Sespe Creek and N(orth) F(ork) Matilija Creek could remain open to fishing. However, as barriers are removed or bypassed, fishing regulations will be reassessed in the Ventura and Santa Clara River watersheds. The EDC Request for Emergency Closure will be officially reviewed at the Fish and Game Commission meetings in Santa Barbara on November 16, We believe that the information presented in this article is accurate. However, discussions are continuing among the stakeholders. We ll keep you posted. Welcome Our New Members NANI BLYLEVEN, MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY The Board of Directors on December 5, 2011 unanimously accepted the following applications for membership: Robert Cruz, Pico Rivera Gary DeArmon, Huntington Beach Don Lee, Seal Beach Joe Lupica, Huntington Beach Julio Nuno, Huntington Beach Ed Rands, Huntington Beach Please welcome all our new members at LBCC functions. Encourage them to volunteer with many of our activities throughout the year. Please note that, in order to receive your Membership Packet with your Badge, Roster and other LBCC items; you must attend a monthly meeting. Venison Stag 2012 JIM THOMASON, 1 ST VICE PRESIDENT The Venison Stag was held and if you were not able to attend, you missed a great time. More than fifty people showed up to enjoy the delicious meal prepared by John and Thea Lincoln as well as share in the holiday spirit. There were trivia questions galore with coveted prizes, including a fish counter and a fly retriever. By all accounts it was a wonderful time. Special thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the party a success. George Siewerd had the clubhouse in fine shape and obtained the beverages. Al and Judy Ross headed up the decorating team that had the clubhouse decked out in holiday cheer. Mick Woodbury led the kitchen assistance crew that served the food with class and expediency. Thanks to everyone that joined in the post party cleanup making tidy work of the task. And of course Bill Boehlert for passing on his hard earned experience to me.i encourage everyone to set aside this evening next year to spend some time with your LBCC friends. Maggie Merriman's Entomology Workshop JOHN VAN DERHOOF, EDITOR On Saturday, March 24, 2011 join Maggie Merriman from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Long Beach Casting Club for her 15 th Annual Basic Entomology Workshop for fly fishers. 6 6 TARGET TALK JANUARY 2012 Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing CAROLE KATZ, NATIONAL TRUSTEE PHWFF We ended 2011 with some advanced classes. Knot and rigging classes were taught by Al Ross and Jeff Gross, and the Royal Wulff was instructed by Jeff Sadler. We tied the Prince Nymph and copper john, both of which were taught by John Woodling. John has tied and donated more than 4,000 flies to PHWFF over the last two years and we are thrilled to have him help with our program. Dennis Martinez led two weeks of tying using red and green materials for woolly buggers and other flies that were hung inside clear plastic ball holiday ornaments. in preparation for the national Rod Building Contest, Joe Richter spent a couple of weeks showing advanced rod wrapping and rod weaving techniques. One of his demonstrations was weaving the PHWFF logo, which turned out beautifully. Some of our experienced vets will be making rods utilizing these techniques. We re all looking forward to the beginning of the national Rod Building Contest in January. The last class of 2011 was November 28, followed by a final San Gabriel River fishing outing on December 9, before taking off the month of December to enjoy the holidays. We had a potluck holiday party during which two vets got Participant of the Year awards in the form of Orvis Access rod and reel sets that had been donated by Orvis. Congratulations to Bill Boyce and Jerry Ramirez for their hard work and efforts to give back to PHWFF. The veterans gave plaques to each of the volunteers to express their gratitude in a moving ceremony. Several volunteers and veterans staffed a booth at the Veterans Day Event at Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base, where we signed up eight new participants. This means we will have 23 disabled veterans in our program starting in January, veterans who have served in Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq. Three of our volunteers pooled their talents to create a holiday card for PHWFF National. David Lloyd donned his Santa garb and posed for photographer Alan Ross while fishing the San Gabriel. Alan then delivered the photos to John Van Derhoof, who expertly designed a greeting card, which was then printed for just the cost of paper and envelopes by a local printer to whom I was referred by Mark Tsunawaki. Nine hundred great cards were printed and distributed nationwide, thanks to our club member PHWFF volunteers. We re very proud of veteran Jesse Garza who helped as an instructor during the club s rod building classes this year. Plans are underway for next year s trips and other activities, as well as fundraising. If you would like to help with classes or make a donation to support our program, please contact me at Katzhogan@gmail. com. Thank you for your support.

8 TARGET TALK JANUARY 2012 Fly of the Month: Mayfly Emerger JOHN VAN DERHOOF, EDITOR Have you figured it out yet? Yeah, I know it s not that obvious but I really want you all to have fun this winter. Last month s fly this month s fly; all are a great way to fish the Lower Owens this winter. Last month I presented midge; you will absolutely need a midge pattern to successfully fish on this piece of water. It will probably account for 80% to 90% of your fishing there but what about the rest of the time? Well, you need something for those periods that the fish are on the surface. When trout are feeding on Blue-Winged Olives in the film this month s fly is a great way to go. This fly is tied to represent a mayfly in one of its most vulnerable stages: an emerging adult. Many mayfly species (including BWOs) have difficulty emerging from their nymphal shuck and spend a longer than normal period of time in the surface film while they emerge and pump fluid into their wings. Since they can t fly they are classed as a different type of mayfly: edible! The fly should rest in the water s surface film with its abdomen dipping below the surface. It is very simple to tie (a bonus) and should be fished dead drift with a long fine tippet. I have also fished as the top fly of a two-fly rig with either a Halo or a WD-40 below. The weight used should be only enough to counter the current and should at the bottom of the rig. The length of your set-up should be adjusted to match the depth of the run. Give it a try this winter when the trout are looking up. Materials for tying the Mayfly Emerger: Hook: Thread: Abdomen: Thorax: Tiemco, #2457, scud/emerger hook or equivalent, in size #18-#20 or as needed to match the hatch 8/0 olive Zelon fibers, olive or a color to match the hatch Olive dubbing to match the hatch Wing Case: A c u l - d e - c u nard (CDC) feather, dark gray or a color to match the hatch Hackle: Gray soft hackle or a color to match the hatch

TARGET TALK JANUARY Instructions for tying the Mayfly Emerger: 1. Attach the thread to the hook, wind down to the bend and tie in the Zelon that will comprise the abdomen. The Zelon should be about the length of the hook shank and comprised of ten to twenty fibers depending on the size of the fly. Don t make it to thick as it needs to appear light and almost translucent and it won t allow this section to sink quickly. 2. Next, tie in the CDC fibers by the tips. These feathers are from the preening gland on a duck and are naturally impregnated with oil, helping them to float. Here's a tip do not wash them and when you are fishing with CDC do not apply any floatant; only dry the fly with a chamois or your shirt to help maintain its flotation. Dub in the thorax to the head space. Optional: Sometimes I like to add a short wing to this fly which I think actually makes trout take it more consistently and even more aggressively. I feel that the fish sees the short wing and reacts quickly before the mayfly fills it and flies away. To add the wing simply tie in the CDC feather over the abdomen and angling slightly upwards but do not cut off the butt ends as they will still be used for the thorax. The length of the wing should be about half the length of the abdomen. 3. Tie in the hackle the hackle should be very sparse so tie in the hackle by the tip and wind one to two turns. Pull the CDC feathers forward over the thorax and hackle using a slight twist (to help keep the fibers together) and tie them down. Wind the head, whip finish and head on down to the river and go fishing.
