1 Montana s Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Volunteer Newsletter MONTANA BULL SHEET December 2014 Greetings and Merry Christmas From Your State Leadership Team! As I take a look back on 2014, I can t help but burst with pride over this State Leadership Team (SLT) and what they have accomplished this year. Once again, Montana is a million dollar state and we have all of you to thank for that. Without all of our wonderful volunteer s hard work, we certainly could not achieve this goal year after year. If you missed the annual Rendezvous held in June, you missed a ton of fun! We held a work project taking down jack fence, had the popular wild game potluck and started a new tradition of decorating your camp and being awarded the prize for best decorations. Many new friendships were made and old ones renewed. We would love it if you would join us on June 26-28, 2015 for Rendezvous. Save the Date on your 2015 calendars. I promise you and your family will have a wonderful time! In August we said happy retirement to longtime volunteer, Regional Director and all around good guy, Scott Westphal. We wish him all the best of luck in retirement and know that we will be seeing him in Elk Country! Photo courtesy of Jared Wold With Scott s retirement we welcomed a new Regional Director. Matt Ashley was hired and is getting in the swing of things for this upcoming banquet season. I think Matt will do an outstanding job for the RMEF and for all of the volunteers. If you get a chance say hi and welcome Matt to the family! I think the thing that I am most proud of this SLT accomplishing, is the planning and execution of a Wounded Warrior Hunt. We partnered with the Montana Wounded Warrior Project and two Marines were chosen to join us in hunting camp. We set up camp out of Wisdom, Montana and had the absolute best week. Dustin, who had never harvested an elk before shot a nice little bull on the first morning and Casey, got a cow a day later. It makes me so very proud to be able to give back something to these brave heroes, who have fought for our freedom and put their lives at risk for all of us. A 2015 hunt is already in the planning stages! As 2014 and the Year of the Volunteer comes to a close, I would like to thank the wonderful folks on our SLT for all of their hard work and dedication to the RMEF. We work hard and play harder and I am so proud to call them friends and be a part of what they are accomplishing. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We hope that 2015 will bring peace, love and prosperity to each one of you. Jamie Freed, MT State Chair

Planning for this RMEF Montana Wounded Warrior Hunt began at the December 2013 State Leadership Team meeting in Helena. The idea was that within two years, the SLT would like to sponsor a hunt for Wounded Warriors or Outdoor Dream for a youth. This hunt started to become a reality after I attended the Wounded Warrior Shoot that the local trap club holds every July. To see how these young men interact with each other was amazing. The phone calls begin. The easiest call was to Neil Baumann, member on the board of directors of Montana Wounded Warriors. There is no shortage of people that want to hunt elk. Next, where to hunt? After a few failed attempts to gain access on the east side of Montana, I called Heidi Hirschy in Wisdom, MT. She was interested but needed more information as to what we were all about. A few weeks after I sent her the information about the RMEF and Wounded Warriors, I got the call we were waiting for. The Hirschy s would close off the north end of their ranch so that only Wounded Warriors would be hunting. We arrived in the Big Hole Valley to set up our camp on October 28th. All went well and by 5:00 p.m. everything was looking good. We went into Wisdom to meet the first Marine to join us. KC Sivumaki, from Great Falls, chose to stay with us at Camp Tenderloin. After having pizza at the Antlers Saloon, we went back to camp. Early Wednesday morning, our second Marine, Dustin Andersen from Kalispell, came into camp. At breakfast and on the way out to hunt, these two Marines got to know each other, finding out that they had served in the same areas. Matt Ashely would be hunting with Dustin, and I (Mike Zaragoza) would be hunting with KC. The plan was to split up to cover more area and meet up at a fence in the southwest corner of the ranch. Around 9:30 a.m., Dustin got a shot at a nice rag horn, his first elk. Continued on page 3

With the Hirschy s permission to drive on the ranch, we were able to get the elk into the pick up whole. On Thursday the hunting was slow and animals were scarce. The highlight of the day, was supper that evening. We welcomed to our camp, Heidi Hirschy and her husband Dan and Jerri Kuntz, were our special guests for the evening. Good food and good people, it just doesn t get any better than that. At breakfast on Friday, there was a great amount of excitement. The night before, Tim Freed saw elk in one of the fields on the ranch. The plan was for Matt and KC to be in position at first light. By 10:00 a.m., KC had his cow elk on the ground. After congratulatory handshakes and photos, the work began again. With two elk in camp, and racing a long drive, KC and Dustin decided that it was time to head for home. The rest of us in camp started to take down wall tents and cleanup for an early morning departure. Dustin Anderson and KC Sivumaki, thank you. It was our pleasure, privilege and honor to have you share camp and to hunt with you on your first RMEF Montana Wounded Warrior Hunt. Thanks to all who took the time to help with this hunt and make it possible: Heidi, Dan and Jerri from the Hirschy Ranch. 4 Page 4 of 12 Page 3 of 8 Reflections Photo courtesy of Matt Ashley I joined the Marines in July 2003 and I was in Iraq by February On August 12, 2004 while I was on a foot patrol in Al Ramadi, a RPG was fired at our squad and I was hit with shrapnel. I completed two more tours and left the Marines in I moved to Kalispell in 2008 and in 2012 my VA Counselor informed about the Montana Wounded Warriors Organization. In October 2014, Neil Baumann, Montana Wounded Warrior Board Member, called me up and asked me if I would be interested in going on an elk hunt? Of course I said, Yes! Neil informed me that RMEF would be running the hunt, I had no idea it was going to be at that big of a level. I was blown away when I arrived at elk camp the first morning. The camp was like what you read about in hunting magazines, and even better than the set up of the camp, was the people. I don t think, I have ever met such a generous group of people! I m very bad at remembering anything...let alone remembering a name and I can actually remember everyone who was there! The fact that this was my first elk would be enough of a memory, but the fact I was surrounded with so many great people and I got to know them, will easily be one of the best times of my life. I really can t put into words how grateful I am to be a part of this, Thank you! Dustin Andersen, Kalispell Photo courtesy of Matt Ashley I enlisted into the Marines in 2002 and served until I was deployed to Iraq in I spent six months there the first time. We took contact multiple times and suffered two- KIAs. I deployed a second time in September We were in charge of policing the city of Al Ramadi and for securing our supply route. On November 4, 2004 we were on a night movement, our sniper team was hit by an IED. We lost two lives and four were medivaced. Our patrol moved forward, as we prepared to mount our vehicles, a RPG detonated right behind me. I received multiple shrapnel wounds, and I was medivaced. My final year of enlistment was spent at medical appointments. After I left the Marines, I decided to move back to Great Falls to raise my children. This hunting trip was the ten year anniversary of that intense November night. To discover another Marine at elk camp, who went through the same experiences and served in the same area of Iraq meant a lot to me. I can t begin to tell you how much I appreciate all that you guys did for me. There is nothing better than having a good time with good people. I would like to help in any way with the next hunt. I got to enjoy a hunt, now I want to help a fellow vet next time. Thanks for everything! KC Sivumaki, Great Falls

5 Page 5 of 12 MT SLT presenting MONTANA SLT Spotlight On... Hello Montana RMEF members! We ve had an outstanding year in 2014 and we can t thank you enough for your support of elk and elk habitat. We ve had some fun and raised a lot of money for the cause. We all have our reasons for supporting the RMEF mission and for me, it s because there is nothing better than an elk bugle on a cold morning in September. Though I ve never been lucky enough to harvest an elk with a bow, as long as I get out among them, I consider my time afield a success. Courtesy of RMEF Jared Wold, Regional Director Western Montana As a Regional Director, the best part of my job is being able to work with such dedicated and passionate volunteers. If you ve ever thought about joining a local committee, please take the time to reach out to a RMEF staff member or volunteer on how you can help. RMEF volunteers help raise critical funds for elk habitat, which is the easiest way to earn good elk hunting karma! Like many staff, my first involvement with RMEF started as a volunteer when I joined the Flathead Chapter in Kalispell. I really enjoyed my time as a volunteer and spent multiple years also on the Blackfoot-Clearwater Chapter in Seeley Lake and as a District Chair on the State Leadership Team. I m privileged to be in a staff position with RMEF where I m able to continue to work with volunteers on a daily basis. We have a lot of fun working for a great cause and becoming a volunteer will put you elbow to elbow with some of the greatest people in the State of Montana. Thanks for your support of Elk and Elk Country, I hope to see you involved with a committee near you! Jared Wold Show Your Bull? 6 Page 6 of 12 Ray creek-partnership in action Mike Mueller lets out an elk bugle call Photo courtesy Thom Bridge/Independent Record Ray Creek Project -Everything RMEF Stands For & More Mike Mueller, Lands Program Mgr On a crisp October 21 st morning overlooking the Missouri River Valley and Canyon Ferry Lake and looking across to the Elkhorn Mtns, Joe Cohenour, Chapter Chair for Elkhorn Chapter in Helena, thanked the four Neild Family Sisters; Barbara, Phyllis, Marsha and Edwina for trusting the RMEF with the purchase and future of their land that has been in the family for generations. Joe told everyone at the Ray Creek Dedication that on behalf of all the RMEF members and volunteers in Montana this is why we do what we do, hold events, gather donations, and raise money to conserve the best elk country Montana has to offer, and provide more access for hunting, fishing and the public. Well said Joe! On that Dedication day Edwina Hankinson, of Hankinson Outfitting, Dillon, told everyone that their family has been trailing cattle up here, picking berries, picnicking with their family and enjoying this property from as long back as she can remember, and now the best thing about seeing their family lands conserved is that she and her family can still use it since it will be part of the Helena National Forest and open to the public. She could not have said it better! Archie Harper, USFS Fish Biologist, said Ray Creek is the most important cold water stream left in the area since it has one of the last natural sources of pure-strain Westslope cut throat trout populations. Archie went on to say it was one of the happiest days he has had as a fisheries biologist knowing this stream will be protected and now open to the public. Archie said the importance of the stream can not be overstated since fish biologist have taken small fry of the genetically pure strain fish and use them to supplement or start new populations of the threatened fish in other streams in Montana. It does not get any better for him and it was moving to hear him talk about it. Ray Creek is nearly 1000 acres of some of the best elk and wildlife habitat, fish habitat and open space MT has to offer. What makes it so valuable is the diversity of habitat types consisting of aspen, conifer forests, meadows, riparian Continued on page 7

Its location within the Helena National Forest and next to other conserved private lands also makes it important to protect. Its value to elk was evident when a bull answered the earlier bugle call from down below, kind of in a way that said the big guy approved and was relieved he could continue living there with the rest of the herd. I am not sure what it was like on opening day of general elk and deer season four days later since the new land open to the public was featured on the front page of the Helena Independent newspaper the next day and there were news releases and blogs hitting the web, but one thing is for sure, there were nearly 6,000 acres of new and enhanced public access open to the public for the first time. I sure hope it was not a traffic jam up there but I can only imagine the hunter orange clad youth and their parent s excitement to get to hunt in this pristine area together for the first time. Let s hope a kid was able to bag an elk and some family was able to fill the freezer thanks to all the RMEF volunteer s hard work that made this project possible. So thanks to the RMEF Volunteers and members for making this great project possible! This is what we are all about, conserving elk country, providing more public access to private and public lands, protecting beautiful views, celebrating our successes with dedications and at the RMEF events, and working with partners like the Neild Family to conserve their family lands forever. This project and funding for this project came from working with partners such as the Helena National Forest, MT Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Trust, Cinnabar Foundation, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and funding from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation that you make possible. We also celebrated this project completion at the Helena Elkhorn Chapter Million Dollar Banquet October 4 th by listening to Bill Avey, Helena National Forest Supervisor, tell the banquet attendees and volunteers thank you for making this project possible and that the USFS could not have done it without the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. That is what we are about, making a difference and getting results, right? So another piece of Montana elk country conserved forever for all of us. RMEF President and CEO M David Allen shared, This projects hits at the heart of the mission of the Rocky Mountain Elk foundation. It s an incredible project that permanently protects almost a thousand acres of prime elk habitat while also providing a new access point for sportsmen and women AND making it happen alongside a great group of conservation partners who understand and appreciate its importance. This project celebrates many winners. We express our sincere thanks to all who made this day possible. Again, we thank our partners, our volunteers and members, and each of you for your support of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

RMEF worked with the BLM, and MTFWP, and other sportsmen groups to improve access to 41,344 acres of public land west of Dillon. RMEF funding assisted in the purchase of a 30 - foot wide permanent road easement to cross 0.66 miles, in three separate road segments, of a private ranch through two drainages in the Medicine Lodge area approximately 35 miles southwest of Dillion in Beaverhead County. The project improves access to both the Tendoy and Beaverhead Mountains. RMEF also partnered with the BLM Dillon Field Office in 2013 to complete construction on a road project that re-opened and improved public access to more than 9,355 additional acres at Cow Creek in the Medicine Lodge drainage. Improving public access to encourage the public s responsible use and enjoyment of their land and resources continues to be a high priority for BLM, both locally and nationally, said Cornie Hudson, BLM Dillon Field Office Manager. The partnerships that made this project possible could be a model for future access projects of this nature. Thank you partners! When you combine our work from last year with these two new projects, RMEF has now improved access to more than 50,000 acres of public lands in this drainage over the last two years alone, said Blake Henning, RMEF Vice President of Lands and Conservation. RMEF completed Phase 8 of the Tenderfoot Acquisition and now hope to get $2 million of Land and Conservation Funding in 2015 to complete this 8,200 acre habitat project, finally. BY the time you read this newsletter RMEF will most likely have purchased another 631 acres adjacent to the Wall Creek Wildlife Management Area near Ennis that will be now secured winter elk range there. So thanks to all of you for all you do to make all this possible, can you imagine Montana without the Elk Foundation, it is a better place today due to you and your families. Well, here is how you can do just that. The RMEF District Chair program is specifically designed to provide an avenue where you can get involved with other volunteers to make RMEF more successful than it already is. District Chair volunteers are frequently used as a source for ideas and think tanks for staff in Headquarters. We also do our own share of think tanking to come up with new and innovative ideas and ways to do more than we did last year. These ideas usually come from various committee members from around the state and are brought to this meeting by the District Chairs. You can get involved in helping structure the Summer Rendezvous, newsletters, statewide raffles, special projects and mentoring volunteers. It will be one of the most rewarding experiences you will undertake. Just let any of the current District Chairs, State Chair or Regional Directors know and we ll get an application to you. Consider sharing your time and talents. You should not pass up this opportunity! Become a RMEF Volunteer for Montana!
