1 Susquehanna Ripples Newsletter of the Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited #044 July th Anniversary Dinner Recap Everyone who attended the Anniversary Celebration Dinner at 33 East Restaurant had a great time and left with many memories and new friendships. We were very fortunate to have had three of our founding members present as well as many long time members. It was a great night meeting new friends, sharing stories, and in sharing a great night with everyone. There was a large memorabilia display highlighting some of the Chapter events and activities over the last 50 years; and a silent auction was held with items donated by Tom Finkbiner of the Slate Run Tackle Shop, Orvis, LL Bean, Steven Shaner, Ken Hunter, Dave Craig, Mike O Brien, Truman McMullen, and Mark Susinno. We were very fortunate to have had many distinguished guests attend: Bryan Moore, Vice President of Volunteer Operations for National Trout Unlimited; Brian Celebrating 50 Years Three of the founding members of the Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited. We were entertained by Ken Hunter who gave us a very insightful and fun look into the life of an artist. He had many slides to show and a great story behind each one. He shared where his inspiration comes from to do the paintings he does and how his love of the outdoors allows him to do what he does. The entire evening was fun and memorable and I made many new friends and am looking forward to the future where We all hope your summer is enjoyable and safe and that you are doing lots of fishing. Please send us your stories and photo s so that we can share them with others. We welcome items on all aspects of fishing and not just trout fishing.

2 Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited Election Results H. Scott Rupert It is with great sadness that we have to say that we have lost a great friend and member of our family, Scott Rupert. Scott died at his home in May and will be sadly missed by all. He was a member of the Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited and served as a Director since 2013 and was active with the Chapter always lending a hand when needed. Our Prayers and thoughts go out to his family and friends and he will be missed by all. Scott s obituary can be found on our webpage. Scott Rupert Estate Donates to Chapter Our chapter is delighted to have received a large collection of tools and materials from the estate of our director and friend, Scott Rupert, courtesy of his family. Some of it will be used for our fly tying lessons, and the balance will provide a great addition to our next sale. Scott legacy will continue on with this donation and we want to thank Scott s family for this donation. We are hope to be able to repeat the good fortune that we had at our mall sale last year. Family Fishing Event in Slate Run Discover just how much fun fishing can be when you do it together at a PFBC Family Fishing Program. Learn basic fishing skills like knot tying, casting, baiting the hook, and taking a fish off the hook. You and your family will have the opportunity to fish no fishing license required. All equipment provided and will include both spinning and fly fishing. This event was rescheduled from May and will be held on July 19, 2014 (11:00 AM to 05:00 PM). 3 Help Keep our Waterways Clean Storm drains are metal grate inlets that can be seen along road curbs, in parking lots, and outside buildings around our community. Storm drains collect rain water that is carried away through a network of underground pipes. In most places the storm water is carried straight to local streams and rivers - water bodies often used for drinking water by downstream communities. Storm drains simply carry rainwater and pollutants directly to the nearest stream, river or wetland. When it rains, the accumulated water washes over streets, roofs, lawns, and parking lots and picks up oil, sediment, bacteria, grease and chemicals that can pollute our waterways. Unfortunately, some people use the storm drains for hazardous waste disposal by pouring chemicals, pesticides, paints, antifreeze and used motor oil down the catch basins. Dumping these materials pollutes the water which kills fish, vegetation and wildlife and can even foul our drinking water supply What can you do to keep our storm water and streams cleaner? Do not dump anything into storm drains Use less, or even quit using, fertilizers and week killers on your lawn and garden Wash you car at a commercial car wash or on an unpaved surface like your lawn, which acts as a sponge and filter Remove yard debris and trash Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited clogging storm drain inlets Clean up car fluids that are spilled or leaking immediately Dispose of household chemicals responsibly by following the directions on the package The marker at the top of this article has been placed throughout our area on storm drains. Only rain down the storm drain pamphlet - Lycoming County Department of Planning and Community Development (April 2013) 2. ttp:// J o i n T h e C y c l e / I n Y o u r C o m m u n i t y / Stormdrain.aspx Recipe of the Month Mom s Best Crappie Sandwich 4 (8 to 10 oz each) crappie fillets 2 cups whole milk 1/2 cup white cornmeal 1/2 cup cornstarch 1/2 cup all purpose flour 2 Tbs chili powder 1 Tbs salt 2 cups canola oil 8 slices rye bread (or other bread of your choice) Tabasco or tartar sauce In a large container, soak crappie fillets in whole mile for 1 hour. In a large resealable plastic bad, combine cornmeal, cornstarch, flour, chili powder and salt. Remove fillets from milk; discard milk. Add fillets to reaealable plastic bag; shake fillets with dry ingredients. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium - high heat until hot. Place fillets in skillet; fry until golden brown, about 3 to 5 minutes. Place fillets on bread and serve with Tabasco or tartar sauce.
