THE OWA HOMEMAKER "A Magazne for Homemakers from a Homemakers School " VOLUME 2 MARCH, 1923 NUMBER 12 Patrck Plans for Openng Days of Gardenng Season T OP of the mornng to ye, and phat are the brdes a-sayng to yez today?" called old Patrck, the gardner to a queer mummy-lke fgure n the corner of the garden. Fath, soon an ll be of a takn that straw overcoat off from ye and yell be producn the fnest roses ver ths summer! And twas only ysterday dd take the "covers" off from all the lles and bulbs n the border and rake up all the old dead leaves-but not to burn lke old George across the way was dong-lm telln ye save all that stuff for -further use. "Now lets see, where was gon? Oh yes, rght n here to the tool-house to see f everythng s n tp-top shape for sprng work. There are my prunng shears and knves and my good old saw. ll never use that double edge saw agan -t runs the trees. Theres the gas tar and lqud asphaltum for dressng wounds when "doctor" the trees, and the green pant to brghten up the old wheelbarrow and the whte pant to touch up the lattce fence. "Theres so much to do- guess ll st down here and make a memorandum. "Mss Charlottes favorte specmen trees must have the dead wood cut out and the branches shortened a bt to presrve ther symmetry-! thought she sad "cemetery" and wondered where t was. Better do ths rght away as soon as danger from wnter s past and whle the trees are stll dormant. And ll not for get to do t the way old George showed me. ts bad to leave a stump- make a clean cut at the base of the branch and parallel to the trunk of the tree, says he. "ll be prunng the Japanese barberry hedge next-cant do that too soon now f want lots of berres. And then wont have to touch t agan tl after the frutng season. George says the prvet hedge s better trmmed wder at the base than at the top, wth the top a wee bt rounded. "The summer-flowerng shrubs wll have to be pruned, too, before growth begns so as not to be wnter klled. "Then must uncover those vnes that took down from the trells and bured last fall, and let them le uncovered about ten days before te them up agan. "Guess ll do some sprayng next. t could wat tl summer but dd see sgns of scale on some of the trees and a wnter spray of ncotne sulphate wll fx that. And ll get some Bordeau mxture or lme-sulfur to get rd of the rust and blght. Heres the pece clpped from the paper today about "Spray Donts." By JUANTA BEARD ~ ~-~~-=--...~/m -..., "Theres so much to do- guess ll st down here and makla a memoran dum," sad old Pattrck, the gardener- and much there s to do n every.garden wth the comng of sprng. 6 2 THE OWA HOMEMAKER What Wll Dffe, rentate Ths Sprng From Last By OPAL MLLGAN A GAN Dame Fashon steps from behnd her slken curtan, and dctates the styles for the comng Easter season. What shall t be? What wll be the mode that wll dfferentate ths sprng from last? And agan we have to answer truthfully, there s nothng new, just old thngs re-done n a dfferent way. so, as revewed the shop wndows found the old redressed n a charmng manner; smplcty seemed to be the key note o! the sprng fashons. When one thnks of Easter one naturally thnks of the "bonnet," that mak es ts debut on Easter mornng at church. f one were n Pars or Venna one would fnd mllnery shops to be lttle places, where seldom more than one or two dozen hats are on dsplay. There are no long counters heaped wth hats for women to try on. No ndeed! One orders a hat, just as one orders a portrat of herself. Mlady sts before a threesded mrror for hours, where an artst trys dfferent materals, ornaments, and colors on her, selectng only those whch brng out the colorng of the face, har and eyes and suts her own personalty. n Pars and Venna hats are marvelous creatons nspred by artsts, as they should be. Hats make the European women beautful. But n Amerca we are very dfferent. Very few women wll spend one or two hundred dollars on one lttle hat for one short season. No, we would rather have a number of hats each season and have them cost much less. So the hatters n our country have made beautful hats for the Easter season. There wll be bonnets of all knds to choose from. The small hat however wll be mostly favored. The styles gve hnts of the quant, so the lttle poke bonnet whch does poke way out n front and turns up n the back s comng to lfe very rapdly. Flowers, both large and small, fruts and even nuts of brght colors wll decorate the chapeau. Tny rbbons wll fnd ther rghtful place too, among the other trms. Vels are of great mportance for sprng, and ths s.good news for every woman who fnds ths lttle, but mportant detal of dress partcularly becomng. There are the real lace ones whch fall just over the brm of the hat. These shade the eyes a bt, and extend from sde to sde on the brm. Velng bought The styles gv e hnts of the quant, so the lttle puke bonnet whch does poke way out n front s qute n favor. by the yard s draped over the top of the hat and ted n an nterestng bow at one sde, wth the long ends hangng down over the shoulder. t s nterestng to read about fabrcs and one becomes mldly enthusastc through pctures of them, but t takes a tour through the shops to see them n all the gorgeous colors and unusual patterns, and to experence that satsfyng sensaton of rubbng between the fngers the soft, slky or woolly texture of the new fabrcs, to become really excted over them. And oh, such fabrcs! Or one should say such desgns. No one can.go downtown now-a-days wth a clear predetermned dea of what one wants n frabrcs for her new frocks. Nay-for f she does -she s sure to get all muddled up. That s f she has a lmted means, and can have but a lmted number of frocks-as s, sad to say, the case wth most of us. One merchant sad that n all hs years of experence n the slk busness he had never before seen so many novelty fabrcs on the market. And prnts-everythng s prnted, and he fears that such materals wll be very common, and pre dets that the esteemed plan crepes and satns wll become qute exclusve. These plan materals are ornamented n Egyptan embroderes and Bulgaran crosssttch desgns. Capes stll hold a place on the fashon plate. They are of duvetyn crepe backed satn, veldynes, marvella and other rch lookng woolens. Sport togs are always nterestng. Ths season tweeds both plan and pladed wll do ther part n the way of skrts, jackets, and sport coats. Another favorts fabrc s the kntted wool jersey made up n the three pece suts, slpons, and jackets. The b.rushed wool s popular, too, and. s very becomng to the slm mss. Felt and suede sport hats of neutral colors are contrasted wth the frock of brghter color. Many shops are featurng the kntted sweaters, n all sorts of styles. They are plan or of contrastng colors, and are worn wth a woolen skrt whch makes an effectve outft. The desgners seem to be almost outdong themselves n producng an endless varety of beautful collars and cuffs. Just as lace s a dstnct note n vels, so t s n collars. The Bertha collar s stll n demand, but the true rsh lace ones are more n favor. These are exquste on dresses and occasonally on sweaters. Organde too as a favorte. So much can be done wth ths fabrc. One desgner produced a charmng set by alternatng the colors lpstck red, copenhagen blue and almond green. The old fashoned jabot s back, and some French desgners are makng good use of t. One dress was shown featurng a jabot whch hung from the neck to the hem. Fancy hosery has become very popular the last few years. The fashon s another revval of an old style. The present fad orgnated n Pars, where the demand frst asserted tself for a narrow clock. When the craze for em bellshment for all artcles ganed momentum, a desre for wder clocks and more elaborate hose was created. Now we have every sort of a fancy hose and t takes rare judgment and good taste to choose a par or hose that wll not be out of harmony wth the costume. When one s n doubt purchase a par of good (Contnued on page 12)

PEOPLE are comng more and more to realze the value of lght n the home. n the past we were too prone to consder lght a rather necessary evl that must be suppled unless one wshed to go to bed wth the chckens. Snce the general use of electrcty, however, we have not only been puttng more value on bet ter lght, but also on usng ths lght and lght fxtures as a decoraton to our homes. The brght glare of an electrc bulb screamed for a shade, so our de sgners began expermentng and ther results show on every hand. The frst lght was the open fre. Ths s stll an attractve way of J.ghtng, and the person who has never dreamed an hour away whle gazng nto the chang ng multcolored lght of an open fre has one of earths joys stll before hm. The next step n lght development was bunches of grass ted to stcks and used as torches. Then came the tny vessels flled wth anmal ol, suppled wth a wck at one end, and a handle at the other. The ancents consdered use frst, but also made an honest attempt to deco rate ther lamps. They thought of several ngenous devses that were not only practcal but helped n the general appearance. These were varous projectons to catch the drp, and chans or brackets to hold the lamp up out of the way. Ths type of lamp became obselete on the nventon of candles. The elements necessary for candle lght were sockets, sprckets, pans for the drp, stable bases, and some method of attachng the candle stck to the wall. That the decoraton of the candlestck reached a hgh degree s planly shown by the beautful ones that have been left to us by our ancestors. Ol lamps gave lttle to the world n t s often the case that beautful lamps can be made at home for a v,3ry small cost. Here s a student n ceramcs makng clay candlestcks to be used n a home. THE OWA HOMEMA](_ER 3 Let There Be Lght By MLDRED BOYT A lght that reflects a fne old pantng or brngs nto the foreground tl!j3 ar tstc touches of decoraton s most to be desred. the way of beauty, and the gas era came at a tme when commercal desgn was at a very low ebb. Beautful gas fxtures mght have been developed f gas had remaned supreme after the era of artstc nghtmare was safely past. But by that tme electrcty was nvented. The great possbltes of electrcty were apparent at once. For the frst tme desgners dd not have to take nto consderaton the nflammable qualty of the materal they were usng, nor to provde a place for smoke or fumes to be gven off. For a whle electrcty was nstalled nto the gas systems usng the same fxtures. Fortunately there are few house so equpped today, and we have the choce of the best desgns for our homes. Many of us use our homes most n the evenng, therefore the lghtng s of vast mportance. Soft rose or tan lght, brngs a sense of peace, quet, and well beng. Brght lghts str us on to greater actvty and act as the stmulus for exctement. Glarng lght, poor flckerng lght, brght lght where we need dm, and dm where we need brght tend to make us uneasy, nervous and unhappy. Many famly dsagreements could be avoded f the house were correctly lghted. Soft warm lght s for the bedroom and lvng room, whle a brghter lght may be used to a better advantage n the dnng room, study, ktchen and ballroom. Often t s best to supply a drect lght where t s needed and have the rest of fhe room n shadow. There are many types of lght that may be used n every home, such as desk lamps, telephone table lamps, pcture lghts, decoratve lamps, mantle, dressng table, bedsde, cardtable, work and even shavng lamps. These n turn take every avalable shape and sze. A lght that reflected a fne old pantng or one that s so concealed that t lghts a quant fgure, or a bt of tapestry s beautful for a hall or lvng room. How often one has seen fne pantngs so poorly lghted they appeared as a gray mass, no lne or color beng dstngushable. The lamp craze may go to the extreme and be worse than no lamps at all. Too many lamps n a room gve the effect of a small balloon hanger. Ths may be avoded by havng dfferent types of lghts and avodng the mpulse to put a readng lamp on every bt of flat surface. Often a beautful lamp placed before a mrror wll serve as two lamps, both n lght value and n decoratve effect. Great care should be used n choosng the lghts for our homes. Frst we should consder just what we wsh the lght for, secondly what type of lght best fts n to the decoraton scheme, thrdly s the lamp beautful n tself? That s, the proporton correct? Are the colors rght? s t too plan or too decoratve? And wll tre of t? f we can honestly answer these questons then we need never fear the result. t s often the case that beautful lamps may be made at home for a very small cost, a jug or vase of pleasng lne and proporton may be wred, and a harmonzng shade of slk or parchment made for t. Most of the stores carry complete lnes of lampshade frames and fttngs, and as a rule have competent women who have charge of classes n lamp makng. t s best to avod blue or.green shades as these colors gve off a cold whtsh lght that s most unbecomng. f blue or green must be used to complete the harmony, then lne the shade wth some tone of tan or rose so (Contnued on page 14)

4 THE OWA HOMEMA[ER Fsh for Sprng Tme Dnners By KATHERNE GO EPPNGER "Ts very fresh and sweet, Sr- The fsh was taken but ths nght." -Beaumont and Fletcher. We, of the nland country, know lttle of the savor of fresh fsh. However, frozen fshery products may be prepared n so many appetzng forms that what we mss n freshness may be compensated for n palatable preparaton. Snce earlest tmes, fsh has been a staple food, but only recently has t been so unversally accepted as a refned dsh. Amercans eat 20 pounds of fsh a year per -capta. n ts proten content, statstcs ndcate that fsh s practcally on a level wth meat. Despte the fact that fsh contans less fat than the flesh of land anmals, many.nvestgators mantan that t s at least comparable to meat as a source of body vgor. Wth the war came a wdespread apprecaton of the value of fsh as food and resultant ncreased demands. t s cheap, wholesome and plentful. Food authortes suggest ts vared use on the menu twce a week. The housewfe often cheats herself by buyng only the best known and most popular fsh, for the knd that s n greatest demand s apt to be the most expensve. But there.are many knds of fsh not well known to the housewfe. Below s a lst of Msssspp Valley fsh and when they are n season: Black Bass- Entre year. Bowfn-Entre year. Buffalo-Sprng and summer. Carp-October to June. Catfsh-Entre year. Crappe--Entre year. Pke--Entre year. Sturgeon-Aprl to November. Sucker-Sprng and early summer. Wth su ch a range of nland fsh, besdes the many varetes of frozen fsh obtanable, can anyone thnk of a sea food det as beng monotonous? n buyng fsh, ts qualty may be tested as follows: When pressed by the fnger, the flesh of good fsh s elastc and frm, and does not retan an ndentaton. The eyes are brght, glls are brght red, skn s shny, the scales adhere to the skn smells fresh, snks n water, and muscular stffness s evdent to a greater or less degree. The supreme test s the flesh near the backbone. f t s n good condton, the fsh s fresh. "t s dangerous economy to buy cheap fsh," says Henry T. Fnck n "Food and Flavor. "No other food deterorates so rapdly after t comes from the water. Especally s ths true of whte fsh, whch spols quckest of all. Freezng breaks up the tssues and when t once s thawed t decomposes wth enormous rapdty. t should be pla-ced on ce mmedately after purchasng and covered closely, f n a refrgerator wth other foods. Wth fsh as wth meat, most knds can be used n the same ways. Left-over fsh can be made nto croquettes or salads, or creamed. Delcaces of the deep are made attractve when garnshed wth sj.ces of pmento ol1ves, hard-boled eggs, lemon, tomatoes, cucumbers, pckles, shreds of red or green peppers, or parsley. When you plan your weeks menus, put fsh down at least once. There are many delcous ways of servng sea food. Try the followng recpes and see how good they are: Hot Fsh Rolls Bake full crust rolls, usng one for.every person. Cut off the tops of rolls, scoop out the crumbs, brush nsde and outsde wth melted butter and bake n oven untl golden brown. Make a creamed fsh dress ng and add parsley and chopped whtes of hard-boled eggs. Fll the hot rolls wth creamed fsh and sprnkle top wth grated yolks of hardboled eggs. Rarebt n a chafng dsh mx a teaspoonful of melted butter, one tablespoonful cornstarch, 1-4 teaspoonful onon juce, and season wth salt and paprka. As t becomes warm, slowly add one cup mlk, %, cup chopped cheese and one cup cold flaked fsh. Add one be.aten egg and one tablespoonful lemon jwce. Serve hot on thn toast and garnsh wth strps of pmento. Fsh Box Butter a bread pan and lne wth cooked rce. Fll wth a cooked, flaked fsh, season, and cover wth a layer of rce. Stell!m for an hour, then serve on a hot platter wth tomato sauce. Fsh Boats Cut cucumbers n half lengthwse and scoop out the pulp. Make a celery sauce of one cup mayonna,se, two tablespoons fnely chopped cucumber, one cup mnced celery, one tablespoon chopped parsley, two teaspoons lemon juce, salt and paprka. Mx the sauce wth cold flaked fsh and fll the cucumber boats wth the mxture. Garnsh wth slces of pmento olves and serve on crsp lettuce. Jelled Fsh Bol a two-pound steak fsh 20 mnutes n three cups of water. Then remove the fsh and bol the stock down to two cupfuls. Stran and add two cups straned tomatoes, seasoned wth salt and celery salt. To the bolng stock add three tll!blespoons granulated gelatne whch has been soaked n two tablespoons cold water. Break the pcked fsh n flakes and put nto a mold. Slce one hard-bold egg, one lemon, and a dozen stuffed olves and arrange around the outer edge of the mold. Add the stock mxture and place n refrgerator untl frm. Serve on lettuce wth tartare sauce or salad dressng. Fsh Souffle To two cups of rced potatoes add a cup of cold boled fsh, one cup of whte sauce and three beaten egg yolks. Beat three egg whtes untl dry and fold n lghtly. Put n a buttered casserole and bake untl golden brown. Garnsh wth parsley and serve hot. Pneapple and Fsh Chop Suey Bol one and one-half pounds halbut untl done. Dran, cut n peces and fry wth one tablespoon fat and one and onehalf cups grated pneapple. Thcken slghtly wth %, tablespoon corn starch mxed wth -cold water. Fsh Loaf Fnely chop one pound of fsh steak n a meat chopper. Soak two cups of bread crumbs n one cup of mlk and one cup of fsh stock and cook untl the mxture. leaves the sdes of the pan. Mx la, cup butter and two eggs, beaten separately, wth the fsh pulp. Season wth salt, pepper and lemon juce and add one tablespoon parsley. Make a loaf wth sfted crumbs on the outsde and bake for half an hour n a hot oven. Serve wth lemon butter sauce made of two teaspoons lemon juc!,e. work!ed nto four tablespoons creamed butter. f the fsh dsh s vared n ts composton and not served too often, there s lttle danger of the famly becomng tred of the flavor. DECORATVE DARNS ONE of the lttle trcks of ths tme of the year s the ablty to darn or mend the worn garment. The wool dress may do to wear another month more f t s retrmmed n some attractve way to cover the worn places. The old trmmng wll have to be removed and a new method or knd of trmmng used. Wool and slk yarns n harmonzng colors may be used very effectvely. A pretty trmmng can be made by usng wool yarn on the sewng machne. The thread s put through under the pressure foot and caught wth the sttch. The materal s pulled back and forth under the foot and gves a smple but pretty lttle sttch. Ths could be used around the bottom of a skrt, or panels, or perhaps on cuffs. The sweater may be gettng thn. Do not let hand-knt thngs go nto real holes f you can avod t. Always mend them as soon as they show sgns of wear. Whether mendng a hole or a thn place, start at the rght hand sde, at least three rows of knttng beyond the worn spot. Fnd where the thn thread frst makes ts appearance and put the pont of your needle n the same place. Follow t along and pass through two loops of the row above. Slp the pont of your needle through those two loops. Then t travels down nto the row below; comes down and goes through two loops there. So you go up and dow:n from row to row, always k eepngjyotr thread at the rght sde, and always rmttng your needle n and out of the mddle of each old loop never at the sde. When you have fnshed a row take your thread down to the wrong sde of the thng you are mendng. Choose a new row, ether above or below. Brng t up there just as you dd for the frst one, and start agan. Use washed and shrunken wool, and dont pull too tght.

THE OW A HOMEMAKER 5 Two Somethngs for Rany Day Entertanment THE bugle call draws the solder for. ward to hs duty whether he goes eagerly or wth unwllng steps. The bugle s hs master. The crack of the pstol sends the runner off down the cnder track to do hs best. So to each person n: every walk of lfe there s one sound that means, "Youve got to do your best. Now! There are those who depend on you!" t does not matter whether those who depend are an expectantly clappng audence n a theatre or weak and helpless patents n a hosptal. To the mother, the sound of restless lttle voces sayng, "Mother, what shall we do?" s the call she must never fal to answer. What shall they do? When the elements decree that the lttle ones shall not seek the out-of-doors; when books are too ponderous to be nterestng, and one hasnt tme to make them so; when games are very, very old and tresome, and lttle faces are rased expectantly-what shall they do? A solder would as soon shrug hs shoulders at the bugle sound, or a doctor turn away from a deng patent, as a mother would blot out the trustfulness n those lttle upturned faces. Very, very often, at tmes lke ths, one turns to Frend Scssors for help. When one sees hm all brght and shny, wth a fat tube of paste besde hm and a p.le of brght colored magaznes near by, t s often a spur to laggng nspraton. Add to these artcles, a shoe box and a pece of colored tssue paper and wll tell you how to make a "Faryland Box" that s every bt as nterestng for lttle people as t sounds. Lne the nsde of the box wth tssue paper, and paste on the sdes, fary castles and flowers, cut fr om the color ed advertsements n magaznes. There are many of ths type, you wll fnd when you look for them. Also there are pctures of lttle fary creatures, that, when pasted to stff paper wth a lttle strp connectng ther By HARRET SCHLETER Hoops, balloons and rouer skates are good enough as out-of-door entertanment, but t takes a resourceful mother to answer that rany-day queston, "What shall we do?" back to the floor, as a prop, wll stand alone n a most!he-lke manner. JNow, cut a hole about an nch and a half square n one end of the box. Ths s to peep thru when the box s completed. For fnshng touches, fasten lttle paper brds or baskets of flowers on a thread, and hang them through the cover, whch s made by stretchng another pece of color ed tssue paper over the top o,f the box and pastng t frmly on the edges. When the wonder flled chldsh eyes peep through the hole, the queston of what to do s, for the tme beng answered. As to a paper doll house, you know how paper dolls tend to scatter themselves and wardrobes thru every room n the house. They spll themselves out of boxes as fast as they can be put n. And any chld wll tell you that ther clothes are always mxed n a most dstressng manner. The mplements of amusement n ths case, consst of, some furnture and seed catalogs, a note-book of heavy paper and envelopes of dfferent szes, crayons, and of course, scssors and paste. On the rght -lha~d of the note, book paste an envelope, lengthwse, wth the flap turned toward the nsde of the book. Measure where the dolls head wll come, and there cut a hole large enough <for her head to show thru. Cut t so t can be closed or opened, dormr wndow fashon. n the seed catalogs there wll be some colored flowers that may be pasted all around the envelop house. Wth the crayons the chldren can put cur tans n the wndows, and on the opposte page they can ft out a lovely room for the doll wth rugs on the floor and a fne array of furnture. There- There are two somethngs to do! Hot Breads for the Unexpected Guests WHEN guests arrve at an nopportune moment the housewfe who has a store of good emergency r ecpes can meet the stuaton unruffled and composed. Emergency hot bread recpes wll greatly ad n plannng a hasty meal especally n a small town where there are no delcatessen shops from whch the housewfe may buy her l:akng. A good pattern bakng powder bscut recpe has many varatons whch wll gve varety to a meal as well as supply the necessary bread for lunch or dnner. 10 6 THE OWA HOMEMAKER Use Determnes the Knd of Floors You Should Have By MARY SMONS A floor sutable for the lvng room or a bed room mght not be at all desrable for the ktchen or breakfast room where there s constant wear and frequent cleanng s necessary_ OUR grandmothers never had to worry about the knd of wood used to floor ther homes as the floor was always entrely covered by an ngran, Brussels or Velvet Carpet, and never seen except at house-cleanng tme when the carpet was taken up to be dusted. Now, durng ths regn of polshed floors and removable rugs, the floor problem s very vtal. Both the knd and qualty of floorng materal s determned by the use or the wear of the floor n a partcular room. For nstance: A floor sutable for the lvng room or a bed-room mght not be at all desrable for the ktchen where there s constant wear and frequent cleanng s necessary. Wood s the most unversal materal used for floors n prvate houses. Some of the woods used for floorng are: oak, maple, brch. beech, pne, and fr. Of these oak s most used for floors, havng an advantage over pne and fr n that t does not slve r, makes a durable and attractve floor, and beng very hard t wears off evenly. To make a really beautful oak floor the lumber must be ouarter-sawed, ths not only brngs out the beauty of the gran n the wood, but also t has been found that t makes a more durable surface than plan-sawed lumber. A sub-floor of nexpensve lumber should be lad as a foundaton for hgher grade floorng. Ths nsures a level and tghtly fnshed top floor, also a warmer room n wnter. Oak or any selected wood may be used for all the house, however many prefer more durable substances than wood for floors subject to hardest wear as n the ktchen, bath-room, laundry, and entres. Concrete, tle, or composton floors are qute satsfactory for floorng materals as they are durable, santary, and easly cleaned. THe makes an especally attractve floor and s made n a varety of patterns and soft colors. The fnshng of the floors s an nd vdual problem for each home, dependng on preference, knd, of wood used, and the general tone of the furnshngs of th.e room. Snce the floor s the found aton and prmarly the background of the room t should be unobtrusve and as nearly neutral as possble n relaton to ts surroundngs to harmonze wth the rugs, walls, hangngs, furnture, and pctures. Varous combnatons of the followng fnshes may be used: ol, stan, fller, varnsh, shellac, and wax. Take for example an oak floor: f natural fnsh s desred, the pores of the wood are flled wth a colorless fller, shellaced wth a whte shellac, fnshed wth clear varnsh and waxed, or wax may be appled drectly to shellac, the varnsh beng omtted. Stans are used to brng out the gran of the wood and to make the floor darker n color, the latter method s used on soft woods to mtate hard woods. After a coat of stan dres, the floor must be sand-papered before a second coat of stan s appled, as the stan rases the gran makng the wood qute rough. Waxng s the most preferred method of fnshng floors as t enhances the beauty of the wood, s readly and comparatvely easy to renew, and s protecton to the wood. Wax s not expensve, nether does ts applcaton requre a number of expensve tools. A longhandled weghted brush s the only tool necessary for waxng. The secret of well-waxed floors s persstency when applyng the frst coats of wax. Put on a thn coat of wax and persstently rub ths coat to a polsh before applyng another. t s sad that f kept well-waxed the boards of a floor wll wear thn but stll retan ther orgnal fnsh and beauty. Floors should be rewaxed two or three tmes a year when subject to moderate use, otherwse the rewaxng depends on the amount of wear on the floor. Olng makes a satsfactory fnsh for ktchen and bathroom floors. t flls the pores of the wood and gves the floor a durable surface. Boled lnseed ol may be used or a mxture of lnseed ol and turpentne. Pant s another fnsh that should be mentoned as t s so helpful n refnshng old floors. t can be obtaned n a wde range of colors makng possble a floor that wll carry out the color scheme of a room. Panted floors are easly cleaned and f waxed and well cared for, they wll retan ther orgnal fnsh for a long tme. Though the methods of fnshng floors are vared there s one general statement that can be made n regard to fnshes. Always use the best materals obtanable as the expense of the orgnal fnsh s hardly notceable n comparson to ts lastng qualtes. (Contnued on page 11) Panted floors are qute popular. for bed rooms, for here there s not enough wear to necesstate a sturder fnsh.

THE OWA HOMEMAKER 7 "t Happens n the Best of Regulated Nests" By HARRET SCHLETER "RACHEL Robn, where have you been?" twttered Mr. Robn, a lttle mpatently, " came home an hour early to see you." "Oh, my dear Rchard," Mrs. Robn answered, perchng on the edge of ther nest and speakng n an excted chrp. " was just comng back from the market wth some thngs for dnner and stopped at the wndow of the House to talk to the Canares. They are such lovely people, not at all affected, even tho they lve n that gorgeous wcker manson." "Yes, lovely people. What dd they have to say?" " wondered f you werent ever gong to ask that. The people n the House had a quarrel yesterday. A most dreadful quarrel." "Vel, well, what was t all about?" "ll tell t to you just as they told t to me. They sad that all the afternoon The Grl sat on the davenport and read a book and ate chocolates. t got later and later, and the Canares were awfully worred because she ddnt seem to remember about gettng dnner for The Man. "And fnally they heard The Man whstle lke he always does, and The Grl ddnt move untl he was clear n the room. Then she jumped up and ran and kssed hm and sad, " Oh, honey! ve been realng The Shek, and ts wonderful." " Lke t, dear?" sad The Man. He began to look around for sgns of food. " just couldnt stop readng. The Shek s the most wonderful man n the world, except you." "Yes, but -deare, m awfully hungry," ventured The Man. " Have a chocolate, they are luscous. Let me read the part where- " " But honey, arent you gong to get anythng for me to eat?" pleaded The Man. "Well, there s some frut n the refrgerator. could make you a salad, and guess could fnd somethng to make a sandwch or two," sad The Grl thoughtfully. "But lsten," she "went on, brghtenng, " have just a few chapters to read. Couldnt you run and fx t for yourself whle fnsh. Then stack your dshes n the ktchen. ll be through by that tme and we can go to a move." "No, wont!" sad The Man frmly, or very frmly. " Why-why-deary- " "No. wont ths tme or any other tme. work hard all day and you could at least provde substantal food for me twce a day." "He was angry and so was she. She stamped her foot and threw back her head and sad, "Well, f that s why you marred me. why ddnt you hre a c-cook? You j-just want f-oo--food." "Then she started to cry. " ts my rght to at least be provded wth substantal food twce a. day, and besdes-" "Ooooo cant stand ths. You hurt my feelngs," sobbed The Grl. " That s- at- least-anyhow- " "The man was lookng less and less angry and more and more mserable. " mean-oh, honey, dont cry lke that. m sorry! Well go out for dnner 2.nd ll never- " " Ooooo, m sorryer. ll always Oh!" "s that all?" asked Rchard Robn. "Well," anfwflred hs wfe. " to!j you the Canares were lovely people. They ddnt look after that." "But suppose," sad Rchard Robn, puttng hs wng tenderly around hs wte. " suppose he dd lke ths." "Oh, Rchard, youll tear my net and muss up my feathers." A lesson hath March-f a teacher stern- A lesson twere well for the heart to learn. f the sky s dark and the wnds are cold, f the snows a re deep on the moor and wold, f the brown buds le n ther cells asleep, And the clouds come only to frown or weep; f the sprng be late n her warm embrace, She comes at last wth rush and shout, She wll put all the legons of Frost to rout. A h! thus f lfe s a weary March, We pass to joy through a vctors arch. -Helen H. Rsh. Ah, March! we know thou art Knd-hearted, spte of ugly looks and threats, And, out of sght, are nursng Aprls volets! -Helen Hunt. A House to Please the Brds By ESTHER RAYBURN F YOU would bul-d a castle n the ar, buld a brd house. Brds are ary creatures so they must have ther houses n the ar. Whether t s a small log cabn among the vnes on the back porch, a half cocoanut shell near the eaves outsde the bedroom wndow, a many porched and wndowed affar perched on top of a pole n the garden, or a swngng tw.g house hangng from a tree, t should be made attractve to both the brd dwellers and the good people who put t there. Small boys and grandfathers delght n buldng quant houses for the brds. They somehow seem to know just the knd of a home each brd wll be lookng for n the sprngtme. Perhaps most popular of all to the wee wrens s the house made from a very small tn can. After a wnter of pancakes and maple syrup there s sure to be a good supply of Log Cabn maple syrup cans for boys to experment wth. ndeed a lttle brown cabn peepng from the vnes near the back door s very perky. There s sure to be a wren settled there as soon as ths famly of brds are back from southern resorts. Blue brds sometmes buld n houses. Maybe, f there was a half cocoanut shell fastened up under the eaves just outsde the bedroom wndow, ths lttle brd would come and buld a nest there. Of course, the shell must be fastened securely between nals so that when there are small brds there wont be any danger of the nest fallng, From the tree n the front yard. why not have a swngng twg house? GrandfHther wll know how ths house should be made and wth the boys h elo wll surorse even the brds wth the cunnng affar. Sometmes there lttle swngng houses can be made to r esemble rustc summer houses that appeal to the woodsey brd. On some rare occasons these honses have been known to attract even the wly brown thrushes. Of course the twg house, the log cabn and the cocoanut houses are the most practcal, but all the same what fun t s to have a more arstocratc lookng resdence perched loftly on a pole n the garden. Ths s n hopes that sometme a hrd wll come wth enough of a tlt to hs beak to apprecate ths rather stylsh rlwellng. t must be larger than the rest <tnd have chmneys and doors, perches and wndows. There wll be apartments nsde so f the brds so choose they could lve wth cty comfort. Where there are brd houses there must be brd baths. As the garden s the rend evous of the brds, there the bath must be. A green earthen bowl hung by chans from a tree where the early mornng sun wll fall would please any brd. large or small. t s here the brds wll gather to splash and chatter n the early mornng. Remember to make the openngs small for wrens and larger for the bgger brds. Perhaps because youve bult a home for the brds they wll n return teach you to go salng off through realms of fancy wth them. t would only be far to return the favor, you know.
