1 Volume 47 Issue 3 June 2008 President s Message Greetings Club Members: Spring is now gone and here it is the beginning of Summer. Our dogs can now get lots of outdoor time and exercise. Our last meeting was held at the Ravenna Library. The auction made some money that will be used towards the Luncheon at our Specialty. Plans are coming along for our Specialty weekend July 31 thru August 3rd. If you are willing to help, please contact Randy Schriber or myself. The West Highland White Terrier Club of Northern Ohio Our next meeting will be held on June 13th at 6:30 PM. We have reserved the Ottawa Point Shelter in the Brecksville Reservation of the Cleveland Metro Parks. This is the same place as last year s picnic. Please plan to bring your well-mannered Westies, which are permitted on leashes, in crates or in ex-pens. The Club will provide hot dogs, hamburgers (and buns), but please bring your own table service, drinks and a covered dish to share. Directions to the shelter: follow Valley Parkway east from St. Rt. 21 to Meadows Drive. Go south (right) on Meadows Drive. Then go east (left) to the shelter. Valley Parkway is approx. 2 miles south of St. Rt. 82 on St. Rt. 21 and approximately 4 miles north of Interstate 77. For a map, go to then click on Announcements. Hope you can make it. 3 June 2008 The Highlander Page 4 Chris Schriber Chairperson, Vice President / fairislewestie@cs.com Rescue Report - Toto Moves to Columbus Toto, one of our club s rescues, has found a wonderful new family in Canal Winchester near Columbus, Ohio. This is after he has spent several months with the Hackenbergs and their two dogs, Kippin and Casey, in Wadsworth, Ohio. After numerous baths and some drugs from the vet, Toto has regained his health, his hair has returned, and he s become more playful with other dogs. While in Wadsworth he enjoyed taking walks in the park and romping a bit in the trilliums. In Columbus he shares his enclosed run with his new sister Sophie. We knew it would work out when his new owner Deborah Stone s first words were how gorgeous he looked. Rumor has it that he s celebrating his new home with Deborah under the new name of Sami. We wish only the best for Sami, alias Toto, as he adjusts to his new home. Chris Schriber In Memory A memorial donation has been made to our rescue fund by Norene Gibson in memory of her recently deceased Westie, Roxie. Norene wanted to publish that the Red Cross is offering pet first aid classes. You can find more information on the website or by calling your local Red Cross chapter. Learn from Your Local Red Cross Pet emergencies can occur suddenly and without warning. Knowing what to do in the initial moments can be critical to your pet s life. Thanks to the Red Cross, pet owners can equip themselves with first aid and CPR skills. American Red Cross Pet First Aid classes give pet owners the confidence and skills necessary to tend to unexpected emergencies until they can get their pet to a veterinarian. Many Red Cross chapters across the country offer classes with hands-on training in Pet First Aid procedures. Championship Plaques Any member in good standing who has earned an AKC title on their dog during the last year is entitled to a Championship Plaque. The plaques will be presented at the annual picnic on Saturday night, August 2nd at Canfield. Information needed: Registered Name of Dog Title earned Name of owner(s) Date title was earned Decorating 101 Those of you who have attended our summer specialty in the past may have noticed that we always try to decorate the building in some manner. I didn t realize that many had come to expect that until we let it slide last year. So we re bringing back that special touch! I m asking for everyone s help with the theme the board has chosen, which is WATERMELONS. What could be more Summery? We ll even have some to eat at Saturday s picnic. This is not a big budget item we re proposing, in fact, we re hoping for donations. Do you have an old tablecloth with watermelons on it? Spot some paper napkins or paper plates at the dollar store? We ll use it. Maybe one of those watermelon bowls at your neighborhood garage sale? We ll use it. Grandma s old apron or hot pad? Towels, a throw rug, salt and pepper shakers, a fan, some cute curtains? We ll use it. Posters from the farm market? Please help. Be on the look out. Think of it as a treasure hunt. Have some fun! Call me with your ideas. If you can bring it to the show or June picnic, great. Also, we are in the design stages of a souvenir tee shirt featuring westies and watermelons. The club and its approximately 100 members are dedicated to the betterment of our breed. Club meetings are generally held the second Friday of even numbered months, the meeting location varies. Details about the next meeting can be found in this newsletter. Our annual Specialty Show is held each year in August at the Canfield, Ohio Fairgrounds.
