An Official Publication of Genesee Valley Aero Modelers, Ltd. Editor: November 2006 Glenn Crocker 21 Highview Trail Pittsford, NY Balsa Dust NEXT MEETING DATE: Thursday, November 9, 2006 LOCATION: East Bloomfield Town Hall TIME: 7:30 p.m. Prez Sez Well it has been one of the wettest seasons on record. I have never seen the driveway to the field as wet as it has been this year. Usually I have been able to get a few flying sessions in near deer season. Not this year. I think this weather has even kept Joe Ficcaglia from flying! Even with the weather as poor as it has been just a little to our west things were worse. I drove out to Albion a week after the Friday the 13 th snow storm, damage to trees and property reminded me of our ice storm of I guess missing a few days of flying isn t so bad after all. Another Ladies Night out is history. Diane and I spent an enjoyable evening with Chris Keefer and his wife Mary. Before I knew it dinner was over and people were leaving before I had a chance to talk to anyone else. I hope everyone enjoyed the evening. I would like take this opportunity to express a big Thank You to Carol Crocker for the Ladies gifts. While I am saying thanks I would also like to thank Dave Beckwith for finding the new location. I only wish it were earlier in the evening so we could have enjoyed the view of the lake. I would also like to thank Glenn for making the arrangements for the restaurant. Having made arrangements for a couple of the Ladies Night Out dinners I know what a hassle it can be. Another topic that I touched on briefly at the last business meeting is the entertainment after our meetings. We have enjoyed many informative and entertaining programs in the past and I would like to continue to do so. In order to do this I need your help. If you have a topic that you would like to present, a video that you would like to share, or a skill that you could demonstrate, I want to hear from you! Well that s all for now. See you at the next meeting. Jim Balsa Dust* - A collection of refuse possibly containing turkey droppings, and other bits and pieces, possibly retrogressive to your alleged mind.

At The Field By Glenn Crocker We had a great turnout for the 2006 Ladies Night Out. We had 45 people in attendance which was the most we have ever had at the dinner. We had a new location this year (Honeoye Inn on the Lake). Dave Beckwith suggested it and I feel it was a good move. The food was good and was offered at a reasonable price. We will more than likely give it another try next year. There was a suggestion to have something earlier in the day so we could enjoy the view. Dave offered to give boat rides if we did Dick Parshall was not able to make it this year and I believe this is the first dinner he has missed since I have been a member. It seems the 2006 flying season is winding down more rapidly than we would like. Usually we can get some good flying into November but the weather does not seem to be cooperating. The next day without the monsoons and hurricane force winds we will be taking down the shelters for the season. After the recent wet weather you may want to park on the road. The driveway may be a little soft. Max said the boat did not have a curfew but we will more than likely be pulling that before too long. Just because the Titusville Terror is going south he doesn t have to turn our weather off on us. We did have a lot of activity at the field this year. In past years if you went to the field other than club night you would more than likely be by yourself. This year there were people there every evening. There seemed to be a morning, afternoon and evening shift. Charlie worked all three shifts but he didn t ask for overtime! That is about all for now. See you at the field and remember to keep the trees hungry. For Sale Due to Absence of Youth!! Ace Olympic 5 ch. The season runs from November 18 th thru December 10 th. The way the weather has been this may not be much of a hardship. Calendar of Events Jan rd annual Frozen Finger Fly - 2 -

A Titusville Terror Alert For you folks in Titusville this is like a severe storm warning. The Titusville Terror aka. Tom Crazy Fingers Brown is on his way south. I should have sent this warning out in last months newsletter to give you guys some time to prepare. We tried unsuccessfully to have him learn a little couth this summer. We did however get him to put in a couple of flights. We have made progress keeping his thumb off the rudder stick on landing (must be the hammer Charlie carries) but now he needs help to keep it off the rudder on takeoff. Well we have done what we could so now it is up to you guys. PS. Tom did well picking up after the geese. He is a shoe-in at the next election. Notes from an e-flier by Mitch Gerdisch Flying electric airplanes is just one more facet of this great hobby and more and more pilots are trying electric flight. Therefore, for those budding e-fliers, I thought I would share a few thoughts from my four years of experience in this part of the hobby. 1. Once that battery is plugged in, assume the propeller has only one goal in life and that is to hurt you. Even with throttle locks on transmitters and switches on speed controllers, once you plug that battery in, you want to make sure you keep away from the propeller. spinning even with the speed controller switched off. 2. Use quality connectors. I see some folks using Tamiya connectors. Tamiyas are not really suitable for RC flight since it's not a matter of if they will fail, but rather a matter of when. For small models, Dean's makes micro connectors which are well liked. For larger models, Sermos (AKA Anderson Powerpoles) or Dean's Ultra connectors are liked as well,. These are just a couple of choices, but the bottom line is to use a quality connector. 3. Finding a good motor, propeller, and battery combo is a bit science and a bit art. On a glow model, you generally combine a known engine and a known propeller (e.g..40 engine with a 10 x 5 propeller or something like that). In electrics, it can be a bit more complicated since you also have to account for the number of cells, plus there are a number of motor and gearbox combinations. The easiest thing to do is simply find a combination someone else is successfully using in a similarly sized model and copy that. One source for this sort of information is the electric power systems forum like I hope this helps those thinking about trying out electric flight. And, feel free to contact me at telemitch@wowwav.com if you have any follow-up questions. from the Prop Masters RC Aero Club's newsletter. Dave Masters, editor Warrenville IL When a gas or glow-motor driven propeller hits something it will generally stall the motor, but not without doing some damage. An electric motor will not stall; it'll just draw more current in an attempt to keep going. So, an electric driven propeller can do much more damage. Thus, it must be given your utmost respect. The switches on speed controllers are no guarantee either. I've had motors start - 3 -

2006 Ladies Night Out The cake for Ladies Night Out. Dick would not have approved. There weren t any round engines and two wing planes on the cake. All I heard this summer was man I have to lose some weight Look at him go after that Rib. The best side of Tom - his wife Joan, John Reynolds wife, John, Ned Holmes wife and Ned John, Carl, Mike and his wife Barb, Harry wife Harry hid) and Johns wife.. Kris, Jim Dave, John, Carol and Carol Coye Shirley, Charlie, Carolyn and Lou

Club Shots Henry Latka s WACO UPF7. You can t see Henrys unique boots. Nick and his new plane. The plane flies great. I can hear it. I know it is up there somewhere. This is a part of the afternoon shift I was referring to. This is Andrew I believe just before wing separation. The laws of Physics are hell. Dave getting the job done. This summer we had to mow between the rain drops
