1 Sodbusters RC Flying Club News Letter #2189 February 14, 2013 News Letter THE MEETING The meeting was called to order by Scott Russell at 6:30. We had 21 members at the meeting. New Member/ Guest: Roger Naf is from Switzerland and works for 3M. He flies all types of aircraft including jets and slope flyers. We're glad to have him join our club and look forward to seeing him at the field. Treasurer Report: Ted Gilbert was out of town, but Marv Sanderson gave the numbers to the club members; all bills are paid including the field rent for the year. Secretary Report: Marv Sanderson reported that there are currently 57 members. Once again, your club dues need to be paid by March 1st, 2013 to avoid a late fee. Marv will be gone during the month of March, so get your dues in soon. Old Business: The TCRC and the MARCEE auction took place the last couple of weeks. About half dozen members attended the TCRC auction. No major purchases to report, but if you are in the market for any type of plane, you can probably find it for sale at the auction. Zagi combat will resume again this year with the hope of more combatants. This is a full contact aerial fight, with the addition this year of prizes that will be awarded at the end of the season. A 5 to 10 dollar buy in will be required to compete. Get your Zagi ready and spend some time with your simulator and be ready to go. Combats are Sunday evening at 6. New Business: Two members aren't doing well: Paul Costello is at the Good Samaritan in Stillwater (North Owens St.) after an operation and hopes to be clear to go home soon and Dell Kirk is at the Ramsey County Care Center (White Bear Ave and Frost). If you have time, please stop by and wish them a speedy recovery. Also, Tom, the owner of Hobby Warehouse had a perforated ulcer and is recovering. Grassfield R/C does a lot of pylon racing. They would like to give us a presentation in the next couple of months. Scott Russell stated that someone from their club will contact him regarding a date that would work. Field cleanup and field improvements were the next topic: The lawn mower will be serviced as soon as possible this spring. To save the club some money, a Page 1

2 few members stated that they would be able to trailer the mower to the service facility when that time comes. Show and Tell: Marv Sanderson brought is new Zagi, purchased from Zagi.com. He hopes to win all rounds this year and claim the championship crown. Only time will tell!!! A white board and parking signs will be erected this Spring; the white board for lost and found equipment and planes; the parking signs will help with the problems the club has had with people leaving unattended cars in the lot and also the trailer parking next to the shelter. Mark Miller also showed off his new Zagi. Time will tell who the best combat pilot is. Spring cleanup looks to be a big event this year, most with the club reacquiring some of the parking area that was tilled up during the fall harvest. Many people are needed to till, level, and reseed this area. Page 2

3 John Baligrodzki brought has finished Fu-Bar. A small electric project that he made when he was much younger with the help of his father. It has 2 servos with an Eflite 280 motor with a 300ma battery. Greg Coyan brought his DeNight Special. It's a Hanger 9 plane and is equipped with a OS.46 AX. The plane went together quickly, although Greg states that he's not a fast builder. Greg Steffan brought the fuselage of his 4 Star 40. He's looking to electrify it and got some tips from member on how and what to do. RealFlight G2 Lite Simulator Loaner Program The system requirements below are what the manufacture considers to be the minimum PC configuration in which RealFlight G2 should be installed. DLE 20 gas engine with special quiet muffler Troy built modification. Never crashed and about 20 flights on engine plane and entire system. Very pretty plane. Ready to fly $ 675 or stripped out $290. Another option is I keep the DLE 20 and sell the rest ready to fly except for engine for $470. Can bring to field for serious buyer. Yakovlev Yak-3 This Months Airplane This Yak-3 is at the Wanaka Airport, which hosts the New Zealand Fighter Pilots Museum established by aviation enthusiast Sir Tim Wallis. David Price of the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica persuaded Yakovlev to build new Yak-3s using the plans and tools of the original plus the Allison engine. It featured my 1/3-scale Howard DGA-5 Ike Golden Age racer. This Henry Haffke design was built as part of a team effort with Henry and myself working together to finish this impressive icon of National Air Racing fame. In the article, I showed highlights of several of the details that help bring this model to life. Here I would like to show you some of the techniques in more detail. Enjoy! 5 Start with small screws and hinge material from Nelson Hobby Specialties Jerry Nelson specializes in all sorts of giant scale hardware. You ll also need a small screw driver and instead of a small drill but, use a sharpened piece of music wire to pierce the surface of the model. This is quicker and easier than using a drill bit. Here s the completed cockpit hatch on the finished model. The detail is realistic because it uses real screws and piano hinge to make it functional. First you have to build the cockpit section and make sure it fits properly in place. I build the hatch in place on the fuselage so I know it will fit and match the model s outline. Tape the roughed out hatch cover in place. Page 5

6 Without taking the tape off, position the hinge as shown centered on the hinge line. Stick the sharpened wire into the screw hole and install the screws, working from one end to the other skipping holes as you go. The fill in the rest of the holes with screws. Now remove the cockpit hatch cover and start working on it to smooth its surface and fill in any seams or other defects. Here the hatch cover is in place with the hinge screwed in place. Once it s sanded smooth, finish it with a layer of fiberglass cloth and Pacer Z-Poxy Finishing resin. Use two coats and sand between each. Sand smooth again and prime with your favorite spray on primer. I like cheap Krylon primer from the hardware store. Page 6

7 Go over the primed hatch cover and fill in any imperfections and pin holes with glazing putty. Let dry and sand smooth with fine sandpaper. To keep the hatch in place, I use strong ¼-inch diameter magnest (from Hobby-lobby.com) instead of a complicated latching pin installation. Simply drill a hole in the bottom rail of the hatch cover and the top rail of the fuselage opening and glue the magnets into place. They hold very securely but allow easy access to the cockpit interior. Repeat the process as much as necessary until you have a perfectly smooth surface. Now spray a coat of white primer on, let dry, lightly sand and then spray on your final paint job, in this case Insignia White. I use F&M Enterprise s Scale Stits Poly Tone paint applied with a Nelson HVLP spray gun. Once the hatch cover and hinge are painted to match the fuselage, the jobs done.
