1 CALIFORNIA FLY FISHERS UNLIMITED SACRAMENTO S OLDEST FLY FISHING CLUB SINCE 1962 June 2016 From Boring to Exploring CASTING NEWS FROM LAURIE BANKS Ken and I were driving back from Idaho a few weeks ago. As we drove by the turnoff to Ely he remarked that we should take a trip on Old Highway 50 across Nevada to Great Basin National Park. He continued, Highway 50 is called the Loneliest Road in America. We could stop by Ichthyosaur State Park to see the fossils and there is a Bristlecone forest in Great Basin National Park. He could tell by the blank expression on my face that I wasn t too thrilled so he immediately added. There s fishing there. Ok, that peaked my interest, so I got out my phone and Googled it. Turns out there are brook, rainbow, Lahonton and Bonneville cutthroat trout in Great Basin National Park. When Lake Bonneville dried up 25,000 years ago The Bonneville cutthroat moved into the mountain streams. Fascinated, I started Googling more information and planning our trip. Those three words There s fishing there. Completely changed my attitude. I felt like Captain Kirk or Jean Luc Picard. Star Trek s mission statement rang in my ears: to explore strange new places, to seek out a Bonneville trout, to boldly fish where I have never fished before. So now I am on a quest to find a Bonneville trout, a subspecies I have never seen, let alone caught. Although fishing is about catching fish it is also about exploring and discovery, it s about planning and research, it s about anticipation and expectation. It s these components that keep fly fishing from ever becoming old. Laurie Banks Our June speaker is Dan LeCount and he will be presenting a program on fly fishing for Alternative Species of the Tahoe Region. Believe it or not, there is more action to be had in the Tahoe area than strictly chasing Rainbows, Browns, and Brookies. Dan will show us when, where, how, and why it is also fun to fish for Smallmouth Bass, Carp, and if it must be a Trout, why not make it a Mackinaw? Dan is a contract fly designer for the Umpqua Feather Merchants and has been guiding for many years. He will be tying some of his favorite Smallmouth and/or Carp flies before our general meeting so be sure and get there early. This promises to be an exciting program! Ken Giesser Programs Director JUNE 7th SPEAKER FLY TYING DEMO June s demo tier will be Dan LeCount. He will start tying at 6:15 pm so come early to watch them tie some of their magic at the vise. 4 An important aspect of fisheries conservation is learning where to find information KNOW YOUR FISHERIES CONSERVATION GROUPS about the important local/regional topics and projects that affect the environment and survival of aquatic species. Topics can include water diversion, water quality and habitat degradation/restoration. Conservation organizations that address these topics generally consider several different perspectives of the project, including biological, environmental, political and legal aspects. Listed below are some of the fisheries conservation organizations that are good sources of information in our area. Most of these groups have periodic newsletters which they will send to you if you want to give them your address. California Trout (Cal Trout) Started in 1971, Cal Trout was the nations first statewide conservation group supported by trout and steelhead fisherman. Their mission is to protect and restore wild trout, salmon and steelhead waters throughout California. Currently, Cal Trout has over 30 conservation projects in various regions of California. California Sportfishing Protection Alliance (CSPA) The CSPA is a non-profit public benefit conservation and research organization established in 1983 for the purpose of conserving, restoring and enhancing the state s water quality, wildlife and fisheries resources and their aquatic ecosystems and associated riparian habitats. Current CSPA campaigns include: the Delta Plan, No Bay-Delta Tunnels, Bay-Delta Water Quality Plan, Hydropower Relicensing, Clean Farms-Clean Water: Stop Ag Pollution, and Clean Water Enforcement. Friends of the River (FOTR) A current significant project for this organization is the topic and issues surrounding water conservation. FOTR believe there are options, other than simply building or expanding current surface water storage facilities. These include: better agriculture irrigation practices, recycling highly treated wastewater that is currently discharged into the rivers/ocean, repairing leaks and breaks in urban water systems, cleanup and recharge the San Fernando Valley ground water basin with storm water and state-wide installation of more efficient toilets. Ocean desalinization plants are also an option. Northern California Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers (NCCFFF) The NCCFFF is currently very active in supporting the Veterans First Fly Fishing Program. Restore the Delta This is the go to web site for current information on anything involving the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, including water flows/diversions, fish and, of course, the proposed tunnels. Save the Auburn Ravine Salmon and Steelhead (SARSAS) The overall goal of SARSAS is to eliminate any barriers that limit the movement of Chinook salmon and steelhead that inhabit this waterway. They have a volunteer Citizen Science program that conducts visual surveys for these species along Auburn Ravine every year between October 15th and April 15th. Additionally, SARSAS has a monthly meeting where a guest speaker presents information on a variety of topics that have previously included fisheries science, water quality, stream restoration and stream ecology. Save the American River Association (SARA) SARA is a grass roots organization established in 1961 to spearhead the establishment of the American River Parkway and the adoption of the Parkway Plan. Their mission is to protect and enhance the wildlife habitat, fishery and recreational resources of the American River Parkway. Some of their achievements and current responsibilities include: Serving as an advocate in cases where publicly owned Parkway property or zoning ordinances are threatened by private and commercial interests. Serving as the American River advocate on the Sacramento Water Forum, a diverse group working to ensure a stable water supply through the year 2030, while protecting the resources of the river and the parkway. Providing representation on many local agencies and advisory boards with an interest in the river and its assets. Served as plaintiff (with Sacramento County and the Environmental Defense Fund) in a 17-year legal battle against East Bay Municipal Water District to prevent their taking American River water except under stipulated conditions. South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) The SYRCL is s very active organization with many volunteers who contribute to fisheries conservation through a variety of participation programs, including river monitoring to ensure good water quality, a youth river education program, a huge river cleanup program, river and riparian restoration, and promoting an annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival. This group is also active in addressing current conservation issues, such as the impact of marijuana cultivation and the relicensing or building of new hydroelectric dams on water quality and fisheries on the South and Lower Yuba, as well as Bear River. Trout Unlimited (TU) Trout Unlimited is the grand-daddy of fishing conservation organizations. It was founded 56 years ago on the banks of the famous Au Sable River in Michigan. TU is dedicated to ensuring that wild and native trout populations are allowed to thrive, as nature intended, i.e. eliminate the stocking of hatchery trout. There are three very active TU chapters in our area: TU Eldorado Chapter TU Sac-Sierra Chapter TU Truckee Chapter CONSERVATION NEWS Please take the time to visit these web sites and become knowledgeable about their programs and active in fisheries conservation. 5 CFFU has selected Ph.D. candidate Larken Root, of UC Davis's Center for Aquatic Biology and Aquaculture to be the winner of the 2016 Bittner Scholarship. His research involves the investigation of the mechanisms of infection by Bacterial Cold Water Disease (BCWD) in Rainbow Trout. BCWD causes a high mortality in state run hatcheries every year and can impact wild populations as well. His research will help to identify biomarkers in trout which can be used for diagnosis of the disease. It will also increase our understanding of the effects of infection on the cellular level for development of better disease treatments. The scholarship funds will be used to test whether proteins he has identified as biomarkers can accurately predict the infected state of trout. Bill Felts 2016 BITTNER SCHOLARSHIP WINNER Larken Root, on the right, is this years Bittner Scholarship winner. MAY 3rd SPEAKER On May 3rd we were treated to an outstanding program from Rick Mazaira that featured fly fishing inside of Yosemite National Park. Yosemite is one of the crown jewels in our National Park system and is relatively close to Sacramento. Rick spoke briefly about the history of the area and explained how a lot of fish were transported into the park via "coffee cans. He listed the various species including Lohanton Cutthroats, Goldens, Brookies, Rainbows, and Browns. He talked about the short growth season because of altitude and suggested the best time to fish is mid-june through October. He then branched off and discussed methods and gear while emphasizing simplicity and stealthiness. He touched on locations that are easily accessed by the wading fly fisher along the Merced and to Tuolumne Rivers but concentrated a little more on the back country. He broke the park in half by showing us trailheads from inside and outside the park that lead to destinations in the Northern and Southern wilderness areas. He reminded us that no float tubes are allowed in the wilderness and a permit is required to spend the night. This was a terrific program and Rick did a great job of answering questions throughout his presentation. He closed by challenging us and asking for our help on a conservation project regarding the Yellow Legged Frog and its competition with the Trout of Yosemite. He is asking for fin-clip samples. This is a good opportunity to become involved and an even better opportunity/excuse to go fishing! How about it? Thanks Rick! Ken Giesser Programs Director On Wednesday, May 11th, we had 10 new member attend the quarterly new members meeting. Their names are: Trevor Segelke, Richard Whitmire, Mary Ellen Mueller, Debbie McAllister, John Mcallister, David Sheehy, Julie Kaye, Harriet Bennett, David Bennett, and Mike Nielsen. To the other new members who were unable to attend, we extend an invitation to attend our next quarterly new members meeting on Wednesday, 10 August at 6:30 p.m. The CFFU members who attended were: CFFU President Laurie Banks, New Members Liaison Jim Walker, Coachman Award Chair Paul Wisheropp and I, Membership Director, Rich Wilson. Laurie Banks chaired the meeting and informed our new members of all aspects of the club, answered questions and lead discussions regarding what CFFU is all about. At the end of the meeting our new members were presented with a certificate for 6 free flies from each of the three fly fishing shops in Sacramento and Roseville for a total of 18 free flies that alone more than covers the cost of their membership dues for the first year. 6 CFFU ANNUAL BBQ MAY 10 On May 10th, we held our annual BBQ at the home of Howard and Donna Ross overlooking the American River. With the smell of BBQ in the air, catered by Patrick Stiltner Catering, approximately 50 people, both old and new members, enjoyed outstanding food and camaraderie. The weather was perfect. Setup was done by Howard and Donna Ross, Beth Ison, Laurie Banks, Meloney Welborn, Rich Wilson, Greg Howard and Jim Simon. Gary Howard supplied his famous home- brew and many others brought wine and delicious desserts. Carl Lang handled name tags and security. I'm sure many fish stories were spun (whether true or otherwise) and there was much laughter. Thanks to all who attended. Let's do it again next year. 7 FLY TIERS EXCHANGE by Don Wallace Photo s by James Simon Christie Roberts tied a Grand Slam-Scrambled on an octopus hook, size 8, using red or florescent orange thread. The head is a size 7/32 tungsten bead. The body is yellow peach craft yarn split with yellow flashabou. Comment: This is an egg pattern combination between the Depth-Charger and Scrambled Eggs. Tim Landrus tied a Soft Hackle Brassie on a size 6 straight nymph hook using 6/0 black thread. The abdomen is brass wire or red or green. The hackle is Pheasant or partridge. The Demo Fly was a Prince Nymph tied by Gary Howard on a Tiemco 5262 size 14 hook using black 10/0 thread. The tail is black goose biot. The abdomen/body is peacock herl with a copper wire rib. The wing is white goose biot and the hackle is partridge. FLY OF THE MONTH BPS Spent Caddis MATERIALS: Hook: Tiemco 100, Size Thread: Danville s Flymaster 6/0 Black Body: Peacock Herl Wing: Fine Deer Hair Tied and photographed by: Jim Berdan COMMENTS: The BPS Spent Caddis was designed by Dennis Komatsu. Dennis passed away in 2013, but before he died he had designed more than fifty flies of which this is just one. The fly rides low in the water and may be difficult to see in low light conditions. I wouldn t hurt to add a hot spot on top of the fly and between the wings. A material such as Loon s Fly Paint could be used. This is an easy fly to tie and uses only two materials beside the hook and thread. Step 1 Step 1: Pinch the barb and attached the thread about a hook eyes width behind the eye. Next, tie in three peacock herls on top of the hook and wrap back towards the bend of the hook ending just above the mid-point between the hook point and the barb. Continued on page 7 ON THE FLY June 2016 Page 7 Copyright (c) 2006 CFFU All rights reserved.

8 Continued from page 6 Step 2: Wrap the herl forward in touching turns, but behind the thread; this will keep the herls from separating and make a fairly full body. Tie off the herl leaving one to two eye widths free. Step 2 Step 3 Step 3: Select a small clump of deer hair, clean the under fur, and stack in your hair stacker. Measure the deer hair so that it is about the length of the peacock herl body and tie it in just behind the eye. Step 4 Step 4: Separate the deer hair into two equal parts. Using a figure eight style wrap, tie the wing in a spent wing configuration as shown. Step 5 Step 5: Continue the figure eight wraps to form a smooth head, whip finish, and apply head cement. Step 6 Step 6: The finished fly. That s it. Give it a try, especially when the trout are feeding on spent caddis. ON THE FLY June 2016 Page 8 Copyright (c) 2006 CFFU All rights reserved.

The dates of this year s outing are June Set aside these dates and get ready to battle these sturdy California heritage trout. Many of our experienced members will be camping at the Christie Campground located on hwy The campground is about 5.2 miles beyond the sign for the marina and boat launch. Some anglers may wish to enjoy the comfort of a hotel in Susanville a moderate minute drive from the lake. We suggest you book lodging at either the Super 8 Motel, 2975 Johnstonville rd. or The High Country Inn, 3015 Riverside Drive. Eagle Lake is an early morning fishery, so we are suggesting we meet at the Christie Campground day use area at 6:00 a.m. We will then proceed as a group to the fishing area located at Wildcat Point. The drive to the fishing area is a bit testy so those with low clearance vehicles need to pay attention to occasional obstacles in the road. We have never had a problem so this is just a word to the wise. Bring your float tubes, pontoon boats, prams, or kayaks, for the most ideal presentation. You may also be successful wading along the beaches. Those with boats can launch at the Eagle Lake Marina boat launching ramp. We will provide directions to Wildcat Point from the marina. Bucky" May, a well-known local expert has been fishing the lake for over 40 years. He is a member of C.F.F.U. and is always available to assist in making your experience one that you will remember for years to come. Meals are an ad hoc affair but mover the years we met at our campsite at Christie Campground Loop C for potluck dinners and lots of stories. This trip promises to create new and lasting relationships as well as bragging rights around the campfire. When you sign up at the general meeting pick up a handy fact sheet and map which will explain all the ins and outs. Dennis May This year s summer camp out will be held at Twin Lakes in Mammoth Lakes Ca. Mammoth lakes area is one of my favorite places to vacation AND fish. There is so much to do and see in this area you cannot get it all in just one trip! The Minarets are awesome at sunset!! Devils Postpile, Reds Meadow, Rainbow Falls, Hot Creek; the list goes on and on!! We will be staying in an area that has 5 lakes to fish. Load your buddies and tubes up and pick one. We will do the same 2-fly Event on Saturday AND The Natural Tie Event as well at Saturdays Potluck. At this point I am not sure which lake will be fishing the best to hold the 2 Fly event; time and research will tell. Huge Alpers trout have been planted for years in this area, but since last year the Trout have been coming from Oregon; due to Hatchery issues, i.e., WATER ISSUES. There will be fish and that s all that really matters :) Fishing this area is almost endless: Hot Creek, Crowley Lake, Convict Lake Rock Creek and Rock Creek Lake, Upper Owens River, Lower Owens River; just to name more than a few PLUS 5 Lakes in our backyard of camp. This year there will also be a guided trip on Crowley Lake. The cost is 310$ for 1/2 day, 2 fishers and 410 $ full day, 2 fishers. All flies and gear provided, drinks, snacks for 1/2 day, and lunch is included for full day. 10 Hi All, updating Pyramid Lake fishing trip with Rob Anderson in April, Friday night we went to Gilly's Bar and Grill, watched Laurie ride the mechanical bull in an Urban Cowboy manner and we ate delicious food. Everything went very well Saturday. Although wind was really pushing us around (and off of ladders) the 17 hardy souls who toughed it out caught more than 200 fish of excellent size. Many had dinner together afterwards and bragged about our fish. Sunday was calm. Too calm for the fish and only one was caught so we all headed home early. Great fun was had by all and Rob Anderson seriously put a memorable fishing experience together for us and we hope to see him again next year! Meloney Welborn PYRAMID LAKE OUTING APRIL 30-MAY The line of ladders at Pyramid lake. A bird in the hand is better than a fly in the bush. Mike showing off his catch-of-the-day. Only four fishers took advantage of the April trip to 5-Dot Ranch, but great fun was had by all. 5-Dot is a pay-to-play fishery close to Susanville and while there is primitive camping available, we found it much more convenient to rough it in town, where running water and cold beer were readily available, a scant 30 minutes from the lake. The lake is about 400 acres in area, and despite early reports, quite accessible to float tubes as long as the wind is not too bad. The fish were quite hot and a very pleasant surprise considering the lake is planted. Often a hooked fish would rocket out of the water, and more than a few were lost during their aerial acrobatics, when one forgot to 'bow to the fish'. We had one day of foul weather, and one day of fair, and all in all the fishing was fair-to-good. Sam Seaton managed to christen his brandspanking-new float tube by landing a 23" rainbow, which just inched out Guy Deaner's big fish of 22" (pun intended). Ken Giesser and the author had to settle for smaller fish, most 12-16", with a few in the 18-20" range. Most fish were take either stripping Woolly Buggers or leech patterns, although nymphing worked pretty well once you got the depth right, and Ken managed one on a dry-dropper rig. Not many rising fish but the lake just screams potential if the conditions were right. Between the five anglers (Doug O. fished too), we landed better than 60 fish total. A few notes if you decide to go. As mentioned, float-tubes are fine, pontoons probably even better, and the usual tackle that you might use on a lake like Davis will serve. A floating line, intermediate, and maybe a faster sinker will cover all the depths (I only used floater and intermediate). The lake is not terribly deep (at current lake level, 18' was the deepest I charted), but the fish this time of year seem to be at various depths depending on where you were. The fish do not seem particularly leader shy and were taken on everything from a #18 nymph to a size 6 Woolly Bugger. Finding hungry fish seemed more important than fly in our experience. The campground is nice, but so is the casino/hotel in town. One warning though, that no one told us, do not try to get to the lake in anything less than a truck with decent clearance. A 4WD is ideal, and my AWD Outback worked as well as did Ken's 2WD pickup, but a standard 2WD passenger vehicle would be a really bad idea because the road in is filled with ruts and you have to ford two streams in the final stretch. The lake is open in the spring and again in the fall, and the action was just good enough this year that the four of us are already planning on going back next spring. If interested, drop me a line and if there is enough interest, we might asked Doug Oullette for a clinic. Spots will be limited, however, so when the 'official' announcement goes out this winter, act quick or you will miss out. John E.
