(Carl Bruger, Hudson River Fisherman s Assoc.) Jon started kayak fishing in the late 90s, and has logged over 1000 days on the water fishing from a kayak in over 70 kayak models for 100 species of fish. He s done so from Alaska to Baja to the Caribbean up through New England in both fresh and salt waters. He s worn many of the hats within the sport. He s a NJ native and knows the local kayak fishing well. Besides catching most of our local fresh and saltwater species, he s also caught tarpon, bonefish, billfish, tuna, redfish, snook, mahi- mahi, halibut, salmon, sharks and many other exotic species using spin, conventional and fly gear. Jon has over 20,000 forum posts, has authored hundreds of articles and is author of Kayak Fishing the most comprehensive book on the subject. Jon created the first business that catered to kayak fishing and it had a significant effect on the sport and industry. He has supplied fishermen with kayaks and gear all over the world. As with any sport that evolves, the gear choices have increased over the years; and it s a bit overwhelming for those looking at the sport for the first time or the veteran wanting to see what s new. It was reported that last year s success would be hard to top. There were the great food and prizes both donated and won and the presentation of the annual Flat Wing Award. But to this observer, the most appealing part of the evening were the auctions of the boat fishing trip and day of work. Rick Hettenbach came up with the idea and served as auctioneer. First up was a hotly contested auction for a day of fishing on Rick s boat, finally won by by Terry Burke and Art Watkins. Next came the day of work donated by Terry Burke. Frequently referred to as a husband for a day or a handy man for a day the bidding went back and forth and forth and back with multiple phone calls being made until Rick Hettenback cast the winning bid. All in all we had a great time, shared in the fun, and once again, made some money for the club. The winner of the fly rod was Ron Meza of Philadelphia, PA. He bought the winning ticket at the Somerset show. coastalflyrodders.com
