10 John Egan Memorial Honouring a Football Legend on June 17th On June 17th, Sneem GAA, via its John Egan Memorial Committee will host the unveiling of a bronze memorial to one of the All-time Greats of Kerry football and Sneem native, John Egan. The memorial is a life size statue of John, sculpted by renowned artist, Alan Hall from Valentia and will be set in South Square, facing Sneem Sportsfield, where John gave so many displays of his remarkable footballing skills, vision etc. over many years. The memorial will be unveiled by a quartet of GAA icons comprised of Mick O Dwyer, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Jimmy Deenihan and Niall Cahalane of Cork fame. All 40 of John s teammates and panel members between 1973 and 1984 have been invited to attend. In addition, members of the great Dublin team of the 1970s have also been invited and already Seán Doherty, Anton O Toole, John McCarthy and Robbie Kelleher have said that they hope to be with us in Sneem on the 17 th. In addition to many of John s great opponents from Cork, like Dinny Allen, Colman Corrigan.etc., we also hope to have Richie Connor, captain of the Offaly team of Furthermore I can say that Seamus Darby, the man who shattered the dreams and hearts of all Kerry sports fans in September 1982 with that infamous late goal, has confirmed that he will be with us in Sneem for the unveiling of John s memorial. There is a busy schedule of events organized for the 17th. Between 10am and 2pm an Under 14 John Egan Football Blitz will be staged at Sneem Sportsfield, with the final taking place at 2pm. At 4pm the unveiling celebrations commence with video displays on a big screen of John s famous scores for Kerry. In addition, it is hoped to have Marty Morrissey with us to have a chat with some of John s illustrious teammates and indeed some older stars like Mick O Connell and younger icons like Seamus Moynihan and Colm Cooper, who have all been invited to attend. The Unveiling Ceremony commences at 5pm and we can look forward to hearing f rom Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Mick O Dwyer, Niall Cahalane, Tim Murphy, among others. We will have John Egan s wife, Mary and her children, John Jnr. and Máirín on stage also. I think that many will be very anxious to hear from John Jnr., now that he joined that elite band of sportspeople who has represented his country. Page 10

11 John Egan Memorial Following the unveiling ceremony, traditional entertainment will be provided by our local Sneem Melody Makers. At 7.30pm a football County League Match will take place in Sneem Sportsgrounds between Sneem/Derrynane and Lispole. At 10.30pm the celebrations will continue in the Sneem Hotel with the band Hell for Leather providing the entertainment. Finally, Sneem GAA invites one and all who enjoy sports and in particular, all those throughout Kerry and beyond, who would have played with or against John Egan, at any level, to come to Sneem on June 17th, to pay tribute to a true Gaelic football legend. Incidentally, it s still not too late to be part of the memorial by making a donation to The John Egan Memorial Fund C/o Sneem GAA, Sneem. 14 Sneem Walking Club Sneem JFK 50 Mile Challenge The 6th Sneem JFK 50 Mile Challenge took place on Saturday 20th May under very favourable weather conditions. About 80 people set off from the South Square at 5am, some to do the 15 miles route, others to do 26 miles and the braver ones to tackle the 50 miles. This year runners as well as walkers were allowed to take part and Denis Keane (pictured right) f rom Killarney completed the 50 miles in an unbelievable time of 7 hours and 15 minutes. While this was an outstanding feat we would like to stress that the JFK is not a race and everyone should do it at their own pace as they are allowed 20 hours to complete the course. We would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to make the day a success, our sponsors, the girls in the marquee, the masseuse, the Geopark staff, the people who provided refreshments and toilet facilities along the way and to all the volunteers who worked hours on end to look after the competitors throughout the day. Roll on 2018! A special mention must be made of Graham Tobin (pictured centre below) of the Reserve Defence Force 6 Infantry Battalion (Athlone) who has brought a group of reserves to participate in the JFK Challenge from the start. This year Graham helped organise and promote the event to help raise funds for Childaid, a charity that was founded by members of the Irish Defence Forces and friends who had f irst hand experience of the dire conditions experienced by children in the slums of East Africa, Nepal and at home in Ireland. Pictured left with Graham are Alan Gold from the Naval Service and Colin Gorman, Damien Kelly and Chriistoper Noonan from the defence forces. Page 14

We were guided by Ian McGrigor from Gortbrack Organic Farm in Tralee. Each bed in the tunnel now has four drip feed pipes and a separate tap so that the owners of the bed can choose to water automatically or not. We will shortly be installing a tank to gather rainwater and this will be fed into the system on a timer Many thanks to all those to helped install this system on Saturday, especially Joe Ryan who attached most of the connectors - trojan work!! 18 Kenmare & District Garden Club The weather has been wonderful and after the heat and dryness to now have rain has made the garden explode. There is a lot of work to be done just to keep on top of the expanding bushes and weeds not to mention the grass but the club does offer some respite from all the jobs. On Wednesday 7 th June, Vincent Hyland, an outdoor educator, and official OPW guide will be taking us around the Derrynane National Park and teaching us about the local flora and fauna. We had a wonderful 2-day trip to Co. Waterford early May visiting Mount Congreve, Salterbridge House, Ballyin Gardens, Tourin House and Garden, Shady Plants and a number of nurseries. More plants than people on the way back I would say!! Another major trip coming up on 16th to the 21stJuly will be to the UK - Stratford-upon-Avon and surroundings should be good. There will be no evening meeting until Thursday, 7 th September but if any members garden visits are arranged in the meantime, you will be notified by text etc. Until we meet again, Happy Gardening!
