Bethlie together with Norman lived in the village for many years. They were both active members of our community. Norman being Chairperson of the Parish Council for 10 years and Church Warden for many more. Bethlie was an active member of the Church and WI. 4 Thought for the Month Proverbs Chapter 1, verse 19 Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain; it takes away the life of its possessors. CHURCH HALL DROP-IN AFTERNOON : FEBRUARY 14TH The church hall is open on the second Wednesday of the month for anyone to call in during the afternoon for the chance to meet up with others for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat. We are continuing to meet during the winter months, weather permitting, and the ruary get together is on Wednesday 14th anytime between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. ALL SAINTS LUNCH CLUB : Sunday 18 th ruary The unexpected heavy snowfall on the December morning of our Christmas lunch unfortunately meant that only 14 guests and helpers were able to get to the church hall to enjoy a traditional Christmas lunch together but many thanks to all those who, in spite of the conditions, managed to make it. Thank you to all our volunteers who helped to transport guests and prepare and serve the excellent festive meal. Our first meeting in the New Year took place on Sunday 21 st and special thanks to Sally and Alistair for running this lunch. The ruary lunch will be on Sunday 18th at 12.30pm in the church hall. All are welcome and transport to and from the lunch can be arranged. For more details or to book in contact Kay or Stuart on CALLING FOUNDATION/RECEPTION YEAR FOOTBALLERS WWFC s hugely popular sessions are set to start up again on Sunday mornings commencing 25 th ruary Located at Fulbrook Middle School in Woburn Sands, the sessions offer a secure and fun environment for boys and girls in the Foundation/Reception years at school to get one of their first opportunities to sample the excitement and friendship with one of the areas leading grassroots football clubs. With a number of our older teams already based at the Pavilion. The Club is particularly keen to encourage as many participants from Bow Brickhill as possible. If you are interested in registering your interest, please Ian Williams:- ian.williams@connectedness.co.uk PAN DISABILITY : COMMUNITY FOOTBALL SESSIONS TO LAUNCH Woburn & Wavendon FC are delighted to announce the launch of their Goalability Football Sessions aimed at girls and boys of all ages and types of disability. They will be the first community-based disability football sessions in the West Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes area run by a local grassroots football club, and reflect the Club s commitment to delivering the fun, friendship and fulfillment that football can offer to all. Taking place between 10am-11am every Sunday (commencing 25th ruary 2018) at Fulbrook Middle School in Woburn Sands, FA qualified WWFC coaches with full safeguarding and DBS certification will guide and control activities, placing the care and protection of children first. The aim is to offer youngsters a path to fun-filled progression and development where individual goals can be achieved and celebrated. We ve been working hard to put everything in place for over a year commented Gary Towers, WWFC s Vice Chair. I m indebted to the advice and support we have received from the County FA, but also the inspiration we have all received from the late Zach Heath. Zach -who was disabled himself worked tirelessly with the development of Goalability, and achieved his FA Level 1 in preparation for coaching at the sessions. The Club and FA have been determined to honour his memory and are delighted that his family are still lending their help and support to the initiative. To obtain tickets you have to be 60 or over and be resident in Bow Brickhill. These outings take place usually on the third Wednesday of each month up to October. To obtain tickets please contact Sylvia or Ron Fox on Bow Brickhill History Society : 7th ruary Talk by Jean Yates, Project Officer of the Dunstable Medieval Project entitled Medieval Dunstable A dot.com business Wednesday 7th ruary at 7.45 pm, Church Road All Welcome. No charge. Refreshments available A car was recently stolen in this area when the owner left the engine running and the car unattended as it defrosted. With sub-zero temperatures you should expect your vehicle windows to be iced up in the mornings. You should also be aware that opportunist thieves could be on the look out to take advantage of a vehicle left while its owner is warming it up to defrost the windows. The simple message is not to leave a running car unattended for any length of time. Message Sent By: David Huckle (Police, PCSO, Milton Keynes) 11 4
6 Are you aged 9-14? Then why not join the. BOW BRICKHILL YOUTH CLUB Get Sorted MK! We buy and throwaway things every single day. What we do with what we throwaway makes a big difference! Whether it s a newspaper, can of drink or food wrapper, by putting the right stuff in the right bin we are all playing a big part in making sure what can be recycled, is recycled! In Milton Keynes, we are recycling over 54% but together we can do better! 1st & 3rd Thursdays of each month 6.30 p.m. at the Pavilion : Cost 2 per child ASTRA 500 Club The results of the November draw : 1st prize: 2nd prize: 3rd prize: Emma Walker Alistair Twigg Peter Willis ticket number 27 ticket number 30 ticket number 35 In 2015 Milton Keynes Council was awarded a grant from DCLG to run a Community Recycling Reward Scheme In 2016/17, 16 Parishes took part in the Green Bin Campaign which focused on food waste recycling. The top achieving Parish made a 38.14% increase in food waste recycling over 3 months. In 2018, MKC will run a new recycle & reward scheme for Parishes focusing on reducing contamination in recycling sacks. Bow Brickhill PC have signed up to take part in this scheme. ASTRA 500 Club The results of the December draw : 1st prize: 2nd prize: 3rd prize: Sally Robinson Peter Willis Sue Malleson ticket number 5 ticket number 105 ticket number Every week a large amount of potential recycling is incorrectly placed in another bin, box or bag as well as the wrong things, such as nappies and food being put in the recycling sack. This means that all the contents of the sack will then end up in landfill which costs MKC lots of money to process. Andrea Spurdle : 500 Club Manager The draw is held in The Wheatsheaf on the last Thursday of every month - do come along and support Andrea The Parish council will be working on new events to get everyone involved. Please see the parish council website for updates. Saturday 24th ruary, 7.30, Village Hall, Church Road. Some Recycling facts.. Aluminium cans are 100% recyclable, meaning each can you place in the recycling can end up back on the shelf within 60 days! If all the aluminium drinks cans recycled in the UK were laid end to end, they could orbit the earth 30 times. Sally & Alistair are holding a Paella evening of Spanish themed fun in aid of ASTRA Come as you are or dig out that old holiday sombrero, Flamenco dress or Matador outfit Traditional seafood paella, dessert : Tickets per head. Book a table of 6 friends and get a free jug of Agua de Valencia or Sangria Please ask for vegetarian or non-seafood option when booking tickets. Contact: Sally and Alistair, , sally@pepper-agency.co.uk for tickets. See for more information about the scrumptious food. Do you want to hold a party at the Pavilion? The Pavilion is available to hire for residents (and non-residents) at very competitive rates should you wish to get available dates or hire rates: Each tonne of recycled paper will save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic meters of landfill space, 4000 KW of energy and 7000 gallons of water. It can take just 7 days to turn old newspapers, books and magazines back into new ones. Every Christmas, we throw away enough wrapping paper to cover over 11,000 football pitches! More than 28 billion glass bottles and jars end up in landfills every year which is the equivalent to the Empire State Building filling up every 3 weeks The Parish Council has paid for a colour supplement to be added to this issue to remind everyone of the correct locations for recycled items. We hope this will help in the drive to improve recycling targets. Please Contact: Rebecca Gurnett - the new Parish Clerk/Pavilion Manager 5 10
7 WOBURN SANDS BIG BAND SOCIETY Do you enjoy listening to the hundreds of tunes from the great American Song Book era? If so, come and hear them played by big swing bands and small jazz groups, and frequently performed by the great singers of that era, played on high quality sound equipment. We are basically an appreciation society and meet every third Thursday of the month, 7.00 for 7.30pm, at the Ellen Petit Memorial Hall in Woburn Sands, listening to the great swing music of the Big Band era. Members give presentations playing their selections and talking about the composers, the arrangers, the musicians, the singers and, of course, the big bands of which there are many. There are two one-hour sessions, with a tea/coffee interval; 2.00 entry for members, 3.00 for guests. For more information, call or WI will 'Show the love' on 14 ruary Valentines Day 2018 The NFWI is a founder member of the Climate Coalition and for the past few years there have been events organised by WIs to publicise the issue of climate change and the need for clean energy. The campaign is called 'Show the Love' and is symbolised by green hearts. Each year Bow Brickhill WI have joined in and created green hearts and held conversations in our ruary meetings about climate change. This year we intend to discuss what changes we have seen around the area which might be related to the effects of climate change and to 'Show the Love' around the village. We encourage you to also think about climate change and to look out for our displays of green hearts on Valentines Day. Laughter Lines: I bought Lexi, an 8 week old spaniel, as a surprise for my wife but it turns out she is allergic to dogs, so we are now looking to find her a new home: She is 59 years old, a beautiful and caring woman who can drive, is a great cook and keeps a clean house. NEW DEFIBRILLATOR AT THE PAVILION Following the previous training session in the use of the newly installed defibrillator at the pavilion there were requests for another session to be organised for those that could not attend this one. To this end the Parish Council will seek to arrange this but wish to know if there is sufficient interest for this to go ahead and whether people would prefer a weekday evening or a weekend day time session? Please register your interest and session preference with the new Parish Clerk, Rebecca, either by phone or . PAVILION IMPROVEMENTS Funding from S106 from the Brickhill Sands development will be providing improvements to the pavilion that will consist of picnic benches and seating in the playing field, new play equipment in the children s play area and improved lighting and new acoustic panels in the pavilion. At the last Parish meeting it was agreed that, in order to make full use of these enhanced facilities, the pavilion would be made open to villagers at the weekends for social activity probably starting in the Spring. If people are in favour of this then it is suggested that a village meeting be held in the pavilion on 17 th ruary at 3.30 p.m. to which all those interested are asked to attend to decide how this should be implemented. R U R A L C R I M E If you become a victim of rural crime or suspect that a crime has taken place, you should report it to police by calling the non-emergency number, 101. If an incident is in progress, or there is an immediate threat to life, you should call 999. Important details to note when reporting an incident include the date, time and details of what you have seen, along with a description of any people or vehicles involved. This aide memoir can be printed out and kept at home or in your vehicles for easy access in the event of an incident: documents/1327/4608_rural_crime_aide_memoir_3up_v3.pdf By reporting incidents to the police you can help to build resilience and reduce the impact of rural crime on your local community. There are often fewer witnesses to rural crimes and greater opportunities for criminals to target isolated properties and businesses. The effect of these crimes can also be greater, with people feeling more vulnerable due to their remote location. 9 6
8 PHOTOS OF THE SANTA PARADE WHICH TOURED THE VILLAGE ON SATURDAY 2ND DECEMBER ENDING WITH A CHILDREN S PARTY AT THE CHURCH HALL What wonderful support greeted the Santa Parade which drove all round the village on Saturday 2nd December. Santa was then led to his grotto to meet and greet the children who were then treated to a party with lots of goodies and treats. The grown ups also had lots to keep them amused. Thanks to all who contributed. 7 8
