2 Headteachers Blog Term 4 is drawing to a close and we can look back at a real purple path in the school s achievements. The weeks since Christmas have been absolutely packed with events and success. You will see elsewhere in this newsletter the fantastic sporting success in recent weeks, including a repeat of last year s success in the National Girls U13 football competition, reaching the final on the turf at Wembley on Sunday 8 th April. However, it is just the tip of the iceberg, with successes ranging across swimming, gymnastics, cricket, football, badminton and many more. Issu The term has also seen around 150 of our young people take part in the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. We are the largest centre for this award in the region and I am very pleased to say that we also have the highest completion rate. 3 BBC School Report 2018 On Thursday 15 March our Year 7 students took part in BBC School Report Day. Throughout the day they filmed and reported on stories that mattered to them. BBC School Report aims to educate and inform young people about the news and the world around them by giving them the opportunity to make the news for real! Click here to watch the full report

4 Flying Start Challenge Grand Final 2018 Congratulations to the Year 8 Gordano team who won first place for their presentation and collective scores in the engineering challenges at the Grand Final Flying Start Challenge 2018! Flying Start Challenge is an engineering competition in the South West of England run by nine aerospace companies: Airbus, Atkins, BAE Systems, GKN Aerospace, Leonardo, MBDA, Rolls-Royce, Safran Landing Systems and Triumph. Gordano School were represented by teams from Year 7 and Year 8 at the event held at Fleet Air Museum. Due to the success of the Year 8 team, they were able to walk away from the day with multiple prizes, which included 250 for the school to use for STEM. Congratulations to Jack fielder and Jasper Topham who were awarded certificates for their successful designs, in a further activity that allowed students to design and build their own wing for an aircraft, before it was tested for its strength and flexibility.

5 #TECHNOGNITION Gordano recognised the essential yet often overlooked roles of school science technicians at a #Techognition event held last week as part of British Science Week Technicians were encouraged to take photos of themselves undertaking the weird and wonderful tasks they are required to do! 6 Royal Marines teach Students Military Skills The Royal Marines Visibility team visited Gordano this week to teach students military skills and give an insight into military life. Students learnt shelter building, observation skills and cooking! Students who were selected to take part have previously shown an interest in military life.

The winner will be announced on Monday 18 th June All the students have said how much they have enjoyed taking part and many have signed up to join the Book Club after the Easter holidays each Wednesday lunchtime. Anyone is able to join, just pop into the Library on a Wednesday and you can enjoy writing reviews, reading, discussing plot, sub-plots and characters with others.

8 Message to Parents Return of Library Books As we enter Term 5, it would be a good idea for students to start returning late books that they took out earlier in the year. This is a timely reminder that books do not incur fines, wear and tear on books is expected, but lost books do need to be replaced. Tutors do a great job of reminding students, but somehow this doesn t translate into books making it into school bags. If you need an excuse to have your son/ daughter have a tidy of their bedroom, why not try this approach? If you wish to know if books are outstanding, the library staff are happy to oblige! The library team is available on ext.420 Students raise over 250 for Sport Relief 2018! A big thank you to everyone who Read supported more Sport Relief this year. An amazing 250 was raised from merchandise sold by Sainsbury's staff members, which included wrist bands, pin badges, water bottles, socks, mugs and cakes.

9 Successful Chemistry Olympiad Entries 2018 The Chemistry Olympiad is the leading chemistry competition for students in secondary education across the UK. Run annually, the Olympiad is an opportunity for teachers to challenge their chemistry students, helping them to develop problem-solving skills and apply familiar knowledge in new and interesting contexts. We had 14 entries for Gordano this year, three of those being brave year 12s. The grades were announced on Wednesday this week and it looks certain that Eve Pope, Jemilla Colyer and Lena Perkins will each receive a silver award. Nathan Carey, Amy Jackson and Billy-Kalen Hedges (Y12) will receive a bronze award. A massive well done to these six, particularly Billy in Y12. Awards of participation will go to the following students: Hayley Oliver Rhiannon Woodland Ellie Payce Samantha Butcher Will Gullock Will Henley Jamie Skinner Zander Snow Well done to Rebekah Hichliffe who played beautifully on Saturday night after winning the North Somerset concerto competition!

10 Country Football Finals! Congratulations to our five football teams who have made it to the County Football Finals! An amazing achievement with our U13, U14 and U16 boys teams creating history by winning all three of their Somerset Cup Semi-Finals! A big thank you to Mr Supple for organising it all. U13 Girls Football Team Going to Wembley! Read more Congratulations to our U13 girls who won the EFLTrust Southern Finals to book their place at Wembley in the EFL Trophy! The girls overcame strong opposition in Reading, Colchester & Crawley & won a nail-biting final on penalties.

11 Gordano Swimming Champions! Gordano are North Somerset Swimming Champions! Well done to all swimmers who took part in the North Somerset Swimming Gala last Thursday (15 March). County Cricket Tournament Well done to our U13 girls who battled hard but lost to a very strong Taunton School in the semi-finals of the indoor county cricket tournament by 20 runs. A great experience with some fantastic cricket played.
