Perth High School Sports Newsletter August December 2017 Almost 50 S1-S3 girls have been taking part in the netball club after school on Wednesdays. Thank you to the senior pupils and members of staff in the school who run the club and who have encouraged so many pupils to sign up. Meanwhile the S2 netball team (above) sit top of the Perth & Kinross League after playing 5 fixtures to date. The S1 team are also currently top of their league after winning their first 2 fixtures. We have 2 S4/Senior teams competing in the league this year and both teams have participated in 3 fixtures so far. A strong representation in school netball leagues from Perth High School this year!

Sports Ambassadors Our Sports Ambassadors have been busy promoting extra-curricular opportunities in school: attended year assemblies to deliver presentations to pupils; taken school teams and organised Scottish Cup fixtures; organised an S2 table tennis tournament in December and arranged for the first team coach and U 20 players at St Johnstone FC to come and deliver a coaching session to S1-S3 pupils. The Sports Ambassadors work alongside our Active Schools Coordinators collectively trying to increase participation in extra-curricular clubs in school. We are aiming to encourage pupils to become more engaged in sport, particularly girls and other hard to reach groups. The ambassadors are currently recruiting additional pupils from other year groups to join the team and have been holding interviews at lunchtimes. It will be fantastic to have wider representation from each year group across the school. We look forward to welcoming some new faces soon! L to R: Claire Fillingham (S5), Ben English (S6), David Reid (S5) and Georgina Adams (S3). Katie Fairbairn (S6) and Seb Merone (S6) (not pictured).

Girls Participation This term we have seen a gradual rise in girls participation in our school clubs. This is largely due to a more targeted approach from Active Schools and PE staff to increase the range of opportunities that we offer. However, there is still a significant drop-off of girls taking part from 1 st year into 2 nd year and we would like to encourage more girls to come along to clubs. We offer both competitive and non-competitive clubs therefore we have something for everyone. If you are unsure as to which clubs are non-competitive then please speak to your PE teacher or Active Schools Coordinators. In particular, we would like to see more girls attend the exercise to music class after Christmas. This club takes place in the small gym on Thursdays after school. The club is delivered by 2 fitness students from Perth College and they are happy to tailor the class to pupils requests. If there is a club that you would like to take part in and that we don t currently offer, please speak to your Active Schools Coordinators or a teacher in the PE department and we will try to provide it.

Hockey Our hockey teams have started the league season well. The senior team finished 1 st and 3 rd in the opening tournament of the year. The S3-S4 team currently sit in 2 nd place in the A-league and our 2 nd team are currently in 3 rd place in the B-league. The S1-S2s took part in their first league fixtures of the season and finished 1 st and 3 rd in the A-league and 5 th in the B-league. They have 2 more rounds of games to look forward to in 2018.

Football The S3 football team won 3-0 against Levenmouth in the Scottish Cup and followed this up with a 3-2 win against Webster s High School. They are now through to the 4 th round of the cup. The team are pictured with coach and senior pupil Ben English. Our S2s below during their first P&K schools league match of the season against Pitlochry High School. The S2s also progressed into the 4 th round of the Scottish Schools Cup and are due to play Aboyne Academy after Christmas. The S1s made the second round and were unfortunately knocked out. The senior team are also through to the 4 th round of the Scottish Cup. S1-S3 pupils above with Alec Clelland, 1 st team coach at St Johnstone FC during the recent coaching session.

National Representation Congratulations to Gregor Donald (S5) who made his debut for the Scotland U 17 team in August, playing in a mini-tournament against Italy, England & Turkey. Well done to Sam McLellan (S6) who won a silver and bronze medal in the individual and team saber event at the UK School Games in August. Rory McLellan (S3) won the Secondary School Fencing Championships In November. Ben Wightman also performed well at the UK School Games competing in the Shot Putt and finishing 4 th. A great achievement.

Inter-House Events Mr Robinson s CSLA class organised an inter-house football competition for S1-S2 pupils in September. Some great play and lots of happy faces!

PTA Funding A huge thank you to the PTA for continuing to support our extra-curricular clubs. We are extremely grateful that we can provide these opportunities as they help with purchasing much needed equipment. The badminton club received 30 new rackets and our hockey club were given funding to purchase a hockey goalkeeper kit which Lewis Thomson (S2) is modelling.

Rugby Fantastic photos, courtesy of parent Jan Venter, of our pupils playing in P&K schools rugby fixtures. Eric Davey (S2) above in possession of the ball and Jonathon Venter (S2) below.

Volleyball The lunchtime volleyball club continues to be popular - particularly amongst girls. Our Senior teams played in their first volleyball tournament in Aberdeen in November. We also have 2 senior girls teams competing in the PKDVA recreational league on Sunday evenings at Bell s Sports Centre.

Basketball Junior teams took part in the Douglas Bader basketball tournament at Bell s Sports Centre in October. Thank you to the pupil coaches who helped with the teams. Our S1 boys team had their first match of the year in November and the S1 girls won a close match with Perth Grammar School winning

Tennis Our Senior boys team are taking part in the Scottish Schools Tennis Championships again this year. The boys won their first round match against the High School of Dundee 4-2 and played The James Young High School in December in the second round winning 5-1.

Scottish Schools Road Race Pupils took part in the Scottish Schools Road Race Championships in Falkirk in October. We had an S1 boys team, an S2 Boys team and an individual girl competing. Well done to Alastair Johnstone, Oliver Laing, Lewis Thomson, Finlay Jarvis and Daniel Lidstone who finished 2 nd overall. The team were initially told they finished in 1 st place before race organisers realised they had miscalculated the scores. Regardless of this, our boys ran superbly well.

Leadership A variety of leadership opportunities have been offered to pupils through Active Schools. In the last 6 months pupils have undertaken the following courses through the School Sport Coaching Project and are now helping with school and community sports clubs: Lucy Angus Dance Leaders & Gymnastics Katie Gregory - Basketball Getting Started James Sneyd Badminton Basics & Football Development Sophie Fletcher Badminton Basics Jack Hutchison Badminton Basics, Football Early Touches & Football Development Angus Booth Football Early Touches & Football Development Euan Brand Football Early Touches, Football Development & First Aid David Reid Football Early Touches & Football Development Ben English Football Early Touches & Football Development Ramzi Thain Football Early Touches & Football Development Ellie Mands Gymnastics intro to coaching Layla Harris Gymnastics intro to coaching Allie Kinnear Gymnastics intro to coaching Tess Robertson Gymnastics intro to coaching Ellie Magee Gymnastics into to coaching Katie Hughes Netball Getting Started Joanne Riley Netball Getting Started & Volleyball Rachel Brown Netball Getting Started Emily Kennedy Netball Getting Started Claire Fillingham Introduction to coaching Volleyball Kelly Smart Community Sports Leader Award

Premiership Experience A huge thank you to Mr Robinson in PE who organised a trip to the Etihad Stadium in December. 46 pupils attended the Manchester City v West Ham match with City winning 2-1.

Girls Football Our newly established girls football team played their first friendly match against Blairgowrie High School in November. The team got off to a winning start and this gave the girls some match practice ahead of the PCS regional football tournament. The girls took part in their first PCS regional tournament in November. Despite winning 2 matches, drawing their 3 rd game and finishing in joint 1 st place, they lost out in qualifying for the Scottish Finals on goal difference. A great performance in their first tournament.

P&K Schools Badminton We had a large cohort of pupils participate in the Perth & Kinross Secondary badminton championships at Bell s Sports Centre in November. It was great to see many more pupils take part this year. Congratulations to Molly MacDonald & Jamie Frenz who won the senior mixed doubles event.

Curling We had 3 teams entered in the Hay trophy this year. Well done to all players who took part in this event. The Hay trophy involves playing matches against other schools across Scotland over 2 days. Perth High s 1 st team managed to retain the trophy this year which is a great achievement. Congratulations to Rory Desmond (S5), Harry Gow (S4), Matthew McKenzie (S5) and Cameron Paterson (S6).

Participation Data This term we have increased the number of pupils taking part in extra-curricular activity. We also have 62 new volunteers coaching within our school clubs. The graph above highlights that the largest proportion of our deliverers are senior pupils. All of our teachers, senior pupils, parents and club coach deliverers are volunteers. The other school staff paid deliverers are our outdoor instructors.

Staff & Pupil Events Well done to Miss Hardie, Mr Campbell, Mr Findlay, Mrs Yellowley, Miss Sturrock and Miss Sorbie who took part in the Mo run in Edinburgh to raise money for prostate cancer. Staff and pupils also took part in the Santa run in Perth recently and Miss Grant, Miss Sturrock and Miss Barnet took part in the Perth Mo run in November. Thank You We would like to thank all the staff, parents, community volunteers and pupils who are involved in the delivery of extra-curricular clubs and do so on a voluntary basis. Thanks also to staff who drive mini-buses to take pupils to fixtures. Thank you to Mrs Easson, proof reader of the Sports Newsletter. A massive thank you to Alison Wilson, local resident and great supporter of school sport. Through Alison s recent donation we have been able to provide opportunities for pupils who may otherwise miss out.
