1 THE THISTLEDOWN Scottish Society of Tidewater, Inc. SUMMER 2016 SST Brew Day! P lease join us for the Scottish Society Brew Day on Saturday, July 16. We will meet at Coelacanth Brewery (760 W 22nd St, Norfolk, VA 23517) at 2 pm. The head Brewer will be giving us tours of the facility and talking about the various types of beer they brew. There will be a food truck on site and there are various restaurants that deliver and within easy walking distance. Coelacanth [pronounced SEE- LUH-KANTH] is one of Norfolk s newest breweries and has become a very popular place to enjoy a cold brew on a summer day. Beat the heat at Coelacanth! CoastalVirginia Cup T he Hampton Roads Hurling Club and the Cumann na mban Camogie Club are hosting the second annual Coastal Virginia Cup on July 23. The event will be at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex, which is located at 4001 Dam Neck Rd., Va. Beach. Activities and tournament play runs from 9:30am to 5:00pm, and is free and open to the public. Teams from Hampton Roads, Richmond, DC, Baltimore, Charleston, Atlanta, Raleigh, Nashville, Philadelphia and Allentown will be participating this year, more than twice the teams that participated last year. This tournament features the ancient sports of hurling and camogie, which are exploding in popularity across the US. Please come out and support your local teams! VOLUME 33, ISSUE NUMBER 2 Wallace Night M ark your calendars now to attend our annual Wallace Night Pot Luck Supper on Wednesday, August 3 at 7 pm. This will be our regular monthly meeting at the Church of the Ascension in Virginia Beach. This event commemorates the murder of William Wallace in Celtic Cousins Picnic Saturday, Sept. 10 Y ou won t want to miss the Celtic Cousins Picnic on Saturday, September 10 from 1-5 pm. It will be held at the Church of the Ascension picnic shelter, so it s rain or shine! The address is 4853 Princess Anne Rd., VB. This event is co-hosted by the SST, the St. Andrew s Society of Tidewater, and the Irish American Society of Tidewater. The societies will be providing hot dogs, hamburgers, (maybe) BBQ, condiments and soft drinks. Please bring your favorite picnic side dish or dessert. Coolers are encouraged. And bring your appetites! Bring an instrument if you play!

The Scottish Society of Tidewater exists to promote the preservation and study of Scottish culture, including music, language, art, history, folklore, dance, literature, athletics, and all other things distinctively Scottish among interested persons in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area and to cooperate with like-minded persons, groups and organizations here and abroad. A meeting is held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Church of Ascension Community Center, 4853 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach, VA Social time begins at 7:00pm, and the meeting starts at 7:30pm. I hope you are managing to stay cool. I am pleased and excited to have the opportunity to serve again as SST president. I enjoyed my first tenure and am looking forward to the coming year. A big THANK YOU goes out to our outgoing president, Stacy Apelt. We are so grateful for your hard work, enthusiasm, and passion for all things Scotland. You left some big shoes to fill but I will do my best! We have some great things planned for summer and fall. Upcoming is the Brew Day at Coelacanth Brewery in Norfolk on July 16. Very excited about this, come on out and tour the Brewery! Next comes the Coastal Virginia Cup on July 23. Last year s event was a huge success, and we are hoping to have a repeat. We need volunteers to support the hurlers and camogs of Hampton Roads! Up the Coastal Virginia GAA! Our Annual Wallace Night is on Wednesday, August 3. This is one of my favorite events, and I hope you ll make every effort to join us. The Celtic Cousins Picnic will be on Saturday, Sept. 10. Please come out and avenge Caledonia as we (once again) endeavor to be the Irish in the corn hole challenge! There are several other events happening this fall, including the Kirking at Knox Presbyterian on Sunday, November 13, and the Richmond Games on October 22 & 23. Will keep you posted! We have three new members on our Board of Directors. Welcome, and thanks for your willingness to serve. We are working hard to come up with new and creative ideas for events, membership recruitment, programs and projects. Please share any ideas you may have with a member of the Board. 10 PAGE 10 THI S TL ED OWN SUMMER 2016 Baird Memorial Scholarship 2016 T he purpose of the Richard & Olive Baird Memorial Scholarship is to provide financial support toward the study of an element of Scottish culture. It was named in memory of Richard Dick Baird, who served as the president of the Scottish Society of Tidewater from , and his wife Olive. Both Olive and Dick were very proud of their Scottish Heritage. They devoted much of their lives to the promotion and celebration of Scottish-American culture. It was very fitting that the Scholarship award announcements were made at the Tartan Day Ceilidh by our immediate past president Stacy Apelt. Thanks to Connie Smith for serving as our Scholarship Committee Chair this year. Congratulations to all! Eileen Walker will use her scholarship to help fund a week of Gaelic study on the Isle of Skye this summer. Emily Brubaker will use her scholarship to help with costs associated with competitive Highland dancing. Her father accepted her award on her behalf, as she is away at college. Colin McGlynn will use his scholarship to help offset costs to attend the Jink & Diddle Scottish Fiddle Camp in July. Seán Heely will use his scholarship funds toward his studies in Scottish fiddle. His good friend and long-time SST member Anne McGowan accepted the award on his behalf.
