Reflective Year 7 share their experiences so far at Treviglas Treviglas Community College ran the first Newquay Primary mixed key stage 1 football festival on Wednesday 20th January. The festival was played in the Sports Dome, an ideal space for football in the winter that helps develop the players much quicker. The afternoon was a great success with 10 primary schools entering teams. The players were glowing from the exertion in the cold weather, with many of the players never playing in a football match before; it gave them a new opportunity to compete at this level. The final was played out between Bishops School and Summercourt, with Bishops coming away the winner. 3rd place went to Trenance with Perranporth 4th. Players of the festival awards went to: Oli from Summercourt, Oliver from Bishops and Joe from Trenance. The KS 1 festival was run by Jordan, a Year 11 leader and a member of the football leadership academy. Jordan said, The skills shown were really good the passing and movement at speed was great to watch. Sean Wells School Sports Coordinator for Treviglas explained, This being the first year of th festival, we introduced Futsal to the players: the smaller playing area, less players and a heavier ball at all ages develops the passing, movement and keeping the ball on the ground. The origins of the game originates from Brazil, where it is played at very young age. Treviglas partners in developing football, Newquay FC have been running coaching sessions at local primary schools for this age group with Treviglas football leaders over the past year. This initiative is to get more girls and boys interested in having a go at football in their school at a younger age. Thank you to all the parents and coaches and schools who supported the event, and Newquay FC for their ongoing support. If you want have a go at playing more football: Newquay Ladies Train u6-u pm-6.00pm, Treviglas Sports Dome every Tuesday. Newquay football club run a mixed mini club for U5 U10 on Tretherras Astro pitch every Saturday.
Star Crossed Lovers impressive at Treviglas in latest outstanding production Audiences have been delighted at the outstanding talents of Treviglas students in the college s latest production, Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet. With a full house every night, the students presented one of the best known stories ever told in an engaging and innovative way. There were many great performances in the production, which included lots of ensemble moments and some striking dance, as well as intense moments between the two lovers. The leads acted with true professionalism, impressing the audiences with their clear grasp of Shakespeare s language and their obvious talent as actors, demonstrating a range of emotions. At times the action was fast paced, most notably the fight scenes, which became mass brawls. At others, the pace slowed, and an intensity developed, particularly in the final scene in which Romeo and Juliet died. Behinds the scenes too, students excelled, with lighting and sound being operated by students, led by Olive Stansfield who stage managed the show in a highly professional way. Amelia Old, Year 12, played Juliet, and she commented, I was so excited to be cast as Juliet! I loved the rehearsals, but performing in front of an audience was brilliant. I have gained so much experience through this and enjoyed every minute of it. Jack Pritchard, also Year 12, added, It was a privilege to be involved in this production. I have made new friends from other year groups, and gained in confidence as a performer. I can t wait for the next show! Some students were performing for the first time at Treviglas. Morwenna Taylor, Year 7, said, It was really fun and exciting. I enjoyed working with so many other people!. Ben Bullen, also Year 7 and in charge of lighting the shows, agreed, saying, I have learned a lot and want to learn more it was brilliant!
Treviglas students discover the Newquay Community Orchard Year 7 Treviglas students were recently given the exciting opportunity to visit the main Newquay Community Orchard site and to see what it had to offer. This trip was arranged through the partnership between Newquay Orchard and Treviglas in the creation of the Treviglas Nature Garden on the college site over the past few months. Jane Bridges, Education Officer for the Newquay Community Orchard, suggested that it would be beneficial for the students whom she had been working with, to travel to the main site to gain ideas and take part in activities transferrable to their own college project. The students took part in a range of activities during the session and learnt about the layouts and different considerations required in the planning of any community garden. They dug up and re-planted willow saplings, to protect other trees and plants from the wind and Cornish weather! A hedgehog house was built, to track and monitor the wildlife on site and provide these animals with a protective area in which to live. The students were also very excited to spot a kestrel during themorning. Two students were identified by Jane Bridges as being extremely engaged. She commented, A special mention has to go to Lily who was amazingly helpful and engrossed and also Charlie who really seemed to be in a happy place on Friday and asked a lot of good questions. Both students were developing valuable leadership skills. The Treviglas Orchard project is mainly focussed on social skills, outdoor education and bringing to life both maths and English sessions using material relevant to the Nature Garden. The students are carrying out the hands on approach to learning every Friday at college and are being the primary helpers in the creation and maintenance of this community area. The students have a follow up task set by the Newquay Community Orchard team to complete in their sessions and they are now looking forward to taking some of their inspirations from the main Newquay Community Orchard and embedding these ideas into the Treviglas Nature Garden this Friday!

Treviglas hosts indoor primary rowing festival Newquay Sports Partnership rowing festival took place at Treviglas College, 15 teams were entered from 18 schools. The festival gave the opportunity for the children to compete for the first time against other schools. Treviglas has set up a hub for Indoor rowing in the Newquay area with 3 successful bids from Awards for All which has provided 8 rowing machines for St. Columb Major Academy, 8 for Trevisker and 8 for Treviglas. This year, records were broken in every event, showing what great athletes we have in the Newquay area. The rowing festival this year was for Year 5 and 6 students, boys and girls, from all Newquay Sports partnership schools. Treviglas Sports leaders helped with the festival. Nathan, a Year 8 leader who worked on the festival, said, It was great fun! It was my first big festival leading. It was a great experience and I am looking forward to the next one. The individual results were: First in Girls was Ella from Newquay Junior Academy, with second place going to Brya from Cubert. First place in the boys was Jack from Goonhavern, and James from Newquay Junior Academy came second. In the team competition, Newquay Junior Academy won, with Goonhavern second and Trevisker in third. There were 24 teams entered for the team relay rowing event, where each member of a team of 5 rowed for 1 minute. Newquay Junior Academy were again victorious, followed by Goonhavern, with St. Columb Minor in third. Safer Internet Day 2016 Staff and Students at Treviglas are supporting Safer Internet Day Treviglas is joining hundreds of other organisations across the UK in celebrating Safer Internet Day and promoting the safe and responsible use of technology. To celebrate the day, Treviglas is focusing on on-line Trolling, as part of their ongoing year round Digital Literacy program. The college Digital Leaders will be holding a drop in session during the day to provide information and support to their peers. Safer Internet Day 2016 is on Tuesday 9th February 2016 with the theme Play your part for a better internet, offering the opportunity to focus on both the creative and positive things that children and young people are doing on-line, as well as the role that we all play in helping to create a better internet.
Rugby Football League recognition for Treviglas Treviglas Community College are proud to announce that Treviglas is now accredited as a rugby league development college in partnership with St. Helens Rugby League Club and Cornish Rebels Rugby League Club. On Wednesday 6th January Treviglas welcomed ex-professional rugby league player, Craig Richards, to deliver a master class to students from Years 7-9. Craig has played for Bradford and Oldham and represented the Jamaican rugby league team. The students were put through a carousel of skills workshops to develop their performance on the pitch. The skills the students use within rugby union were positively transferred across to the game of rugby league. Terry Simmonds (Chairman of Newquay Hornets mini s and youth section) who supported the afternoon said, This is another opportunity for students to learn a new game and will have such a positive impact upon the development of our rugby union players within the Newquay Hornets; a fantastic afternoon was had by all. Some of the standout performances during the afternoon were Bailey Williams and Declan Simmonds, who were each awarded a St. Helens rugby ball. The afternoon was supported by Treviglas post 16 rugby leaders, who were trained prior to the session by Craig Richards. Craig was extremely impressed by the leadership, organisation and communication skills of these students. After the huge success of this day, the college is offering local primary schools an opportunity to enjoy a rugby league taster day in partnership with the Cornish Rebels and St. Helens. This will take place on Wednesday 16th March. Andy Nions, Leader of Learning for P.E at the college commented, We are proud of the partnerships we have developed, and the contribution we are making to rugby in our community. Goals Galore at Newquay Sports Partnership Large Schools Netball league Treviglas Community College hosted the Newquay Sports Partnership s large schools netball league on Wednesday. The standard of play in the leagues was impressive from the young players, with the teamwork and communication really developing as games continued. Sean Wells, Community Sports Coordinator for Treviglas, said The local schools find it difficult to get fixtures played in the winter, so with the local primary schools using the Sports Dome and our Netball leaders refereeing and officiating, it makes it a much better environment to develop the players learning of the game. Newquay Junior Academy were especially impressive this time, beating the last year s league winners, Goonhavern, in one of the matches. Well done to all players. Amy, a Year 10 Netball leader, added, We had two roles today as older leaders: referee the games and also teach the younger leaders how to officiate Netball. The Year 7s learned really fast and hopefully will take on more helping out, both in extracurricular clubs in College and at the interhouse events.
Year 9 Gifted and Talented students take part in STEM at Culdrose Year 9 students recently took part in a STEM challenge day at Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Culdrose in Helston. The students had the opportunity to look round the Merlin training facilities and sat in a Merlin training helicopter, as well as seeing the simulators that are used to train pilots in action. The students took part in a challenge to design a lifting device that would move a model stranded helicopter from a desert landscape. Lucy Coleridge, Leader of Learning for Design Technology at the college, commented, The students enjoyed the day and widened their knowledge of engineering and the opportunities available to them. Ella Pudney said, I am thinking about engineering as a future career and today showed me that this is possible. Ben Henwood s reflections on the day included, The STEM challenge was fun; we had to learn to work as a team as well as solve the problem. It was great to go to Culdrose.
Post 16 Curver plastics industry visit Post 16 Product Design students visited Curver plastics, an injection moulding factory in Redruth, recently. Curver produces plastic items for most leading supermarkets and a wide range of shops and businesses. The students had a presentation from the company about plastics and then toured the factory. The students gained a full understanding of the design process, the work and the expense that goes into producing products that are often taken for granted. One of the students, Alex Simmons, said, It was good to see first hand how the injection moulding process worked. I was really surprised how big the machines actually were and how fast the robots worked. Eleanor Chamber added, It was really interesting learning about how the factory recycles their waste and used waste plastic in new products. I didn t expect the factory to be so big and loud: we had to wear ear defenders and follow all the health and safety procedures. Lucy Coleridge, Leader of Learning for design technology concluded, The tour gave students a full understanding of the design process and will support them in their product design exams. It was a really useful visit.
Outstanding Oxbridge success for Treviglas students Treviglas students, Luis Torquato and Joe Smith, were both dancing for joy when they received their Oxbridge offers this week. Joe Smith, who already has an exceptional set of early A-level results to his name, was offered an unconditional place to study Natural Science at Cambridge. Luis Torquato was offered a place at Oxford, to study Chemistry, when he achieves his predicted A* and A grades. Both boys are exceptional in their own way. Joe holds the Treviglas record for the best success in Science and Maths A-Level subjects. including early entry. Luis was the highest achieving student overall in his GCSE Year. The boys have been supported in many ways by the staff at Treviglas on their journey to success. They are highly complimentary about their subject staff, and the pastoral system. Both boys have been on the Treviglas Oxbridge Aspiration Programme since Year 9. Through this scheme they have accessed tremendous support, including subject specific master classes at many universities such as Exeter, Imperial, Oxford and Cambridge. They have also received mentoring from the Oxbridge outreach officer during his 3 visits to the college. They attended summer schools and student shadowing schemes at Oxford and Cambridge. The boys were also supported by Treviglas to apply for a place on the prestigious Nuffield scheme. Oxford and Cambridge value this experience very highly as it demonstrates a passion for the subject beyond the A-Level curriculum. Mrs. Robin Penrose, former Future Prospects Coordinator at the college, said, Not only is this a dream come true for two extremely exceptional and deserving local boys, but it is a dream come true for all the staff too. It is very special indeed.
The Steelers entertain the crowds at Eden On 7th February, Treviglas Community College s steel band, The Steelers, delighted audiences at The Eden Project s World Music weekend. Following performances at Camp Bestival last summer, and at many festivals in the area, the band were thrilled to represent Treviglas, and Newquay, at this nationally renowned tourist and education destination. The band played two sets outside of the two main biomes, and quickly found themselves performing to the Eden crowds, as their music filled the whole arena! Tunes such as Take on Me, Uptown Funk and Hold My Hand were just some highlights from the two sets. Band leader, Mr. Steve Mildenhall, said of the event, These two sets were the culmination of our hard work practicing every week. I couldn t be more proud of the whole band: it was brilliant to see our students enjoying performing their music to a crowd who clearly loved what they heard. One member of the audiences commented, What an outstanding performance The Steelers gave. My son is 3 and loves music: he knew a lot of the songs you played, and you made his weekend when you asked him to play along on your shaker. All of the group were a credit to their school. Following the final performance from the band, all of the players had a session on the Eden ice rink, a lovely gesture from Eden Project. Double Tenor Pan player Esther, 16, said, It was amazing, a brilliant experience and atmosphere. The acoustics and setting were perfect for the pans. Thank you to all who came to watch, listen and dance!" Tenor pan player Dan, 15, added, The different world music performers at Eden were amazing to go and watch - I particularly enjoyed the didgeridoo soloist, who fused his didgeridoo sounds with beats inspired by dance music. A great day out all round. The band are now preparing for their next performances, which include an appearance at the Music For Youth Festival, and later in the summer, a return to the second stage at Camp Bestival.
Treviglas performers triumph at Hall For Cornwall Following on from the recent success of the college s production of Romeo and Juliet, the college s GCSE drama students took to the stage at Hall For Cornwall as part of KEAP s (Kernow Arts Education Partnership) annual Secondary Schools Drama Showcase. The students presented a new play, The Walk, written by local writer Ellen Moule. The play tells the story of Mary Kelynack, and 80 year old Cornish woman who walked 300 miles from Cornwall to London to see the Great Exhibition. It had been written in response to artefacts held at the County Records Office. Treviglas students, Year 10 and 11 GCSE drama students, used a range of ensemble, physical theatre and chorus approaches to bring the script to life in a visually interesting. Feedback from the audience has been resoundingly positive. When the group finished performing, there was a roar of approval throughout the auditorium. The writer, Ellen Moule commented, I just wanted to thank you and the group again for performing such a lovely piece. It was great to see your interpretation of the play, which was brilliant and stayed faithful to the original script I wrote. You captured the essence of the piece for me brilliantly. I'd be grateful if you could convey my thanks to the group again for all the hard work and effort they put in to bringing my script to life. Amanda Harris, Director of KEAP, said, I thought the Treviglas performance was excellent and really brought the script to life. I didn t want it to end. An audience member added, Please pass on my congratulations to your students, who I thought did a great job. I thought their performance really stood out it was very polished and focused. It fills me with courage and relief that you have a strong Drama department as my children will be coming to Treviglas. Mr. Sam Colborne, leader of learning for Creative Arts at the college, commented, Once again, our students rose to the occasion, and delivered a great performance. I m really proud of them, as they should be of themselves. Treviglas students will be performing once again at Hall for Cornwall in April, as part of the National Theatre Connections scheme.
Treviglas students raise over 4000 for charities since December! Students from Treviglas have raised over 4000 for charity in the past two months. Charity week, the last week of the Christmas term, is always a very special one for students and staff at Treviglas. Events included a bake sale, raffle, teacher versus student quiz and some of our male students and teachers even volunteered to have their legs waxed. Many of the students gave up their free time to ensure that the week was a huge success and will be rewarded by having the hours credited towards their Young Leaders in Service awards. The annual Rock Mime concert is always a highlight and every year we look forward to some extraordinary performances. The concert was exceptional and thoroughly enjoyed by all students, both those directly involved and those in the audience. We were delighted that many students, parents, grandparents, younger and older siblings and friends were able to join us for the evening performance of Rock Mime. Harry Brewer, Head Student at Treviglas, said, Year 13 students would like to pass on our congratulations to the Year 12 Dream Team. Charity Week was fantastic this year and a lot of money was raised. Well done to everyone involved! Half of the 2000 raised in Charity Week activities will go to our four House Charities: the Devon and Cornwall Air Ambulance; Shelterbox; the RNLI and Aid4Orphans, and the other half will go to the Sixth Form students chosen charity for this year: The South West Children s Hospice, Little Harbour. Treviglas Sixth Form students again rose to the challenge, rasing over 1000 for SUDEP (Sudden Death in Epilepsy). This charity event was led by Sophie Howard, a Year 12 student, who wanted to raise awareness of SUDEP in memory of her sister, Jess, a former Treviglas student, who sadly died in October. Sophie led a hugely successful fund-raising day, when all students donated cash to wear their own clothes, many reflecting a purple theme, the colour of the SUDEP action charity. A chocolate raffle and sweet sale helped students hit their 1000 target. The students recently welcomed Professor Stephen Brown, Trustee of SUDEP Action and former doctor and professor at the Peninsula Medical School, who specialised in epilepsy. Sophie and Cerys presented Professor Brown with the cheque and he was kind enough to speak to students about the work of the charity and thanked them for their magnificent efforts. Sandra Stephens, Director of Post 16 said, Jess was a talented, creative and sweet-natured student, who often made me smile. I am so pleased that Sophie was able to lead the charity event so brilliantly, in memory of her lovely sister, and to raise such a wonderful total for this worthwhile charity. Finally, students and staff alike came to Treviglas dressed in red and yellow on Friday 29th January to show their support for the RNLI. With a variety of stalls in the hall over 1000 was raised. Staff had their legs waxed and allowed students to put make up on them all in the name of charity. 100 pasties were sold and young people baked, sold hot chocolate ran raffles, sold soft drinks and offered a selection of puzzles and fun and games. Matt Cherry, head of Towan House commented, "Towan's close link with the RNLI is something we're very proud of. Last year we raised over a 1000 towards new life suits. This year has seen the RNLI busiest year for its flood rescue team and we hope that some of the money raised will go towards supporting this cause.
Treviglas students Have a Go at Rick Stein's Seafood School in Padstow Young people from Cornish Schools explored careers in hospitality at Rick Stein s world-famous restaurant in Padstow on 27th January, when The Seafood Restaurant hosted a 'Have a Go at Hospitality Day. Treviglas Students joined students from Budehaven and Sir James Smith s Community School and travelled to Padstow for the event, where they had a go at housekeeping, filleting and cooking fish, making mocktails and customer service. The event was organised by Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership and we are so grateful for the exciting and rewarding opportunity provided by them. Luke Hannaford, one of the students involved, enthused, 'Thank you to all the staff at the Seafood School who organised all the activities and the chef's in the cooking session, especially Aaron, who was a Treviglas student once too.' Hannah Rendall, food and nutrition teacher at the college, commented, 'The students had a fantastic day and learnt so much, not only about possible careers in the catering and hospitality industry, but also skills and knowledge they can apply to their own GCSE coursework and revision.'
The Duke of Edinburgh Award preparing young people for life and work It has been a busy term for the students in Year 10 who have taken on the challenge of completing their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. The award is personalised and students have to show commitment to complete the four different sections: volunteering, physical, skill and expedition. Many of our students have already started their volunteering, securing places with various charity shops and youth groups around the local area. Students have also completed their expedition route, first aid and two 14km navigational training walks. Students should be proud of their achievements thus far and are on track to complete their internationally recognised award.
