2 FRA: Principal s Report Dear All Typically the weather appears to have turned the very moment we break up, but fingers crossed that things will improve quickly. A short, but busy week has finished with an End of Year assembly that perfectly captures the special ethos and sense of community at FRA. My thanks go to Mr Horton for organising the extravaganza. We had an impressive performance from a cheerleading squad, stunning performances from Imogen Vale and Benji Brockett and even an Easter Bonnet Parade; yes really! Heads of House led interactive inter-house karaoke and we revealed the current overall house winners are Trenarren; well done to the them! As I mentioned in last week s newsletter, we have so many enrichment clubs and activities here at FRA. I m really delighted that we have awarded over 400 certificates today for attendance and commitment to these clubs. To promote ever greater participation we are planning an ENRICHMENT FAIR after Easter which we hope will showcase the opportunities on offer. Finally, well done to all those students who have had 100% attendance this term, they have all received certificates and raffle tickets and will be entered into a grand prize draw at the end of the year. Please be reminded that Summer Term starts on Monday 11th April. We have an INSET day on Wednesday 13th April and the Academy is closed to Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. Year 11 are in however and school buses will run at the normal pick up and drop off times. Martin Dale Principal

FRA: creative Y10 Students Take the Audiences Breath Away REPORT BY : Talia Lewis-Fowler, Sophie Banks, Eloise Rickard Y10 On March 10th 2016 Year 10 Drama

Working on a National Theatre project, we feel our performance is as close to a professional production as we could get at this point in our training.

This particular aspect of the performance was a challenge to perfect and we rehearsed every night prior to the evening of the performance to ensure it was as

David Ralfe the visiting Director from the National Theatre was thoroughly impressed with our performance and in his feedback he described it as Superb and

demonstrated enormous enthusiasm, commitment and maturity.

4 FRA: creative Y10 Students Take the Audiences Breath Away REPORT BY : Talia Lewis-Fowler, Sophie Banks, Eloise Rickard Y10 On March 10th 2016 Year 10 Drama students performed a poetic ensemble piece called Take Away. We have rehearsed since November 2015 and enjoyed the whole process of devising the play. Working on a National Theatre project, we feel our performance is as close to a professional production as we could get at this point in our training. The main performance technique we used was psychical theatre which created an ensemble bond between the cast. This particular aspect of the performance was a challenge to perfect and we rehearsed every night prior to the evening of the performance to ensure it was as accurate as we could get it. David Ralfe the visiting Director from the National Theatre was thoroughly impressed with our performance and in his feedback he described it as Superb and identified that, The company rose to the challenge of staging this vibrant and multi-faceted text by combining it with physical theatre to brilliant effect and demonstrated enormous enthusiasm, commitment and maturity. They also made some perceptive links between the portrayal of small communities in the play and their own experiences of growing up in a small town, popular with tourists. Miss Hall, Head of Drama said, I am so proud of the work that has been produced. The students have committed themselves 100% and their hard work has certainly paid off. We look forward to performing Take Away again at the Drum Theatre, Plymouth on Tuesday 19th April, tickets are on sale at the box office now.

FRA: inspired WhereB2 Stole The Show! REPORT BY Ms Wehmeyer Last Saturday the Young Enterprise team WhereB2 attended the Spring Trade Fair 2016 held at the Eden Project.

They won four awards: Best sales Pitch Best Business Case and Communication Best Marketing and Promotion and, the big one Best Overall Company (in Cornwall)!

5 FRA: inspired WhereB2 Stole The Show! REPORT BY Ms Wehmeyer Last Saturday the Young Enterprise team WhereB2 attended the Spring Trade Fair 2016 held at the Eden Project. Teams from all over Cornwall were in attendance; Years They won four awards: Best sales Pitch Best Business Case and Communication Best Marketing and Promotion and, the big one Best Overall Company (in Cornwall)!!!! The also reached an important sales target, having sold 1,000 worth of playing cards. Throughout the process the talented Young Enterprise group have been guided by a team of advisors: Ms Wehmeyer (Business Studies and Young Enterprise Centre Lead), Nick Griffiths (Any Old Lights) and Byran Wills-Heath (Bluefruit SW) as well as developing valuable connections with various experts in print production, graphic design and finance. Next step for the entrepreneur's is the Young Enterprise Cornwall Innovation Awards, which will be held at Culdrose airfield on Thursday 28th April. The winner of this round will go forward to represent Cornwall in the South West Regional Finals of the National competition at Dawlish in June and, from there, the finals in London. #knockknocklondon Ms Wehmeyer said I m absolutely delighted with WhereB2 s resounding success, which is thoroughly deserved. It is ten years since a Cornish team last won the national Young Enterprise competition and we all wish WhereB2 the very best of luck in their quest to bring the trophy back to Cornwall this year. FRA: competitive Y8 Netball County Championships REPORT BY the team On Friday the 18th March a team of 8 girls (Maddy Hunter, Jasmine George, Nancy Mansell, Sami Pallett, Hannah De Grey-Warter, Ellie

6 FRA: competitive Y8 Netball County Championships REPORT BY the team On Friday the 18th March a team of 8 girls (Maddy Hunter, Jasmine George, Nancy Mansell, Sami Pallett, Hannah De Grey-Warter, Ellie Swiggs, Charlotte Pennington and Amelia Collings) set out for Netball County Championships to compete against the other schools in the country. After a long journey the team arrived at Camborne School ready for our first pool of competitors. This pool included teams from Falmouth, Bodmin, Newquay Tretherras and more! In these matches our attacks (Amelia, Ellie, Jasmine and Hannah) played extremely well getting the ball to our shooting third and the defence (Nancy, Sami, Maddy and Charlotte) played brilliantly, stopping our opponents from scoring on a number of times. Although we played our best we only made it to the 5th place pool with 2 other teams. In these matches our movements were great, our defence was tight and strong. All in all, it was a successful day in Camborne learning new things and improving our skills.

When it got close to our time to race there was lots of ergo machines for us to warm up on, then we were marshalled to wait with everyone in our race.

We all find rowing exciting and enjoy new challenges.

7 FRA: competitive School Games Rowing REPORT BY Nikita Williams At the beginning of March, Emma de Grey Warter, Lydia Virr, Nikita Williams and Karl Williams all attended the School Games Indoor Rowing Regional s, at the University of St John and St Mark, Plymouth. We competed in Truro early in the year to be able to go to the Rowing Regional s. When we arrived we registered for our races. In the free time we had there was lots to do, such as double ergo machines and canoeing race machines so you could have fun competing against your friends. When it got close to our time to race there was lots of ergo machines for us to warm up on, then we were marshalled to wait with everyone in our race. While we waited we were given our ergo machine number. We all did extremely well that day as Lydia came 7th, Emma came 8th, and Nikita came 4th which is a personal best for all. We all find rowing exciting and enjoy new challenges. On everybody behalf I would like to thank the school for giving us the opportunity to take part, and Mrs McHardy and Mr Davies for accompanying us on the day and doing a great job supporting! Y7 Handball Match REPORT BY the team On Tuesday the 15th March the selected girls played their second handball match. The game went well with everyone working brilliantly together and putting forward their skills learnt during practice. In the match Aimee Lumb, Lexie Hall, Megan Bennett and Jemma Pritchard each scored 1 point towards the final outcome. The girls weren t expecting to come out on top yet managed to draw - 4 v 4.

8 FRA: enriched Race for Life REPORT BY Mrs Smith Fowey River Academy is hosted its very own 5km race for life event on Saturday 12th March to help raise money for Cancer Research UK. The event was a massive success with 50 runners ranging from age 9 68 years. People ran, walked, came in fancy dress and 2 even completed it 3 legged. The race was won by Owen Johnson in a time of 22minutes 11 seconds and through entry fees and a phenomenal effort of competitors fundraising and sponsorship.we raised 850 for Cancer Research! This is enough to pay for one full week of child cancer research trials or 40 hours and cancer research chat line support. A massive thank you to all participants and supporters with special reference to Coryn Brewster and Rosie Pimblett who raised 350 between them. Here s to next year!!
