Rotary Young Chef Competition District Final Monday 5th May Bank Holiday School Closed Izzy Morris s beautifully presented competition entry. BBC at TBS On Tuesday 4th March the BBC came to The Blandford School to film some Y10 students who were taking part in a workshop run by SAFEDATE. The BBC were filming the workshop as part of a BBC Three documentary being made by Stacey Dooley. When Rihanna hit the headlines after being brutally assaulted by Chris Brown 46% of teenagers believed the pop princess was to blame for his violent actions. Shocked by these reactions, Stacey Dooley is on a mission to investigate domestic abuse amongst young Britons. Stacey says that domestic abuse is the biggest social issue affecting women and girls in Britain today. During their lifetime one in four women will experience some form of domestic abuse at the hands of a partner and a quarter of girls aged 13 to 17 have experienced physical violence from a boyfriend- a trend that is worryingly getting worse. The very important message was put across to the students through the workshop, with one part delivered by Stacey herself. It was very interactive and the students quickly were used to the presence of the cameras and boom microphone. It was a great success for everyone involved and the students are hoping that they will make it to the finished and edited programme. We will be sure to let everyone know when we find out when the documentary is due to be aired. On 22 nd February the District Final of the Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland Young Chef Competition was held at Bournemouth and Poole College. The Blandford School s own Izzy Morris was joined by 13 other finalists who had each won their own local Young Chef competition organised by the Rotary Club in the their local town. Both the District Governor and the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset attended the event to make it a memorable occasion for the young people. The overall standard was excellent, and although Izzy didn t win she was praised for both her organisational and cooking skills. And we know that she will have gained experience and confidence from participating in the competition. Rotarian Mike Preen who organised the competition said Congratulations to all of you who took part in the Rotary District Final for displaying a very high standard of excellence. As I said at the time, you are all a great credit to your teachers and especially yourselves Young Enterprise Dragons Den Out the Box, the Young Enterprise group at The Blandford School, took part in a Dragons Den event at Barclay House in Poole on 11th March The group had to do a presentation on their product an application to stimulate and maintain the interest of young readers - to a group of business men (the Dragons) from various Dorset businesses in an attempt to secure an investment of money or time. Out the Box s product, which is still in the development stages, is aimed at a target market of families with young children. The group who did the presentation included Lindsay Acott Managing Director, Hannah Pitman Secretary, Aaron Joyce Financial Director and Tyler Creech Product Development. Their dynamic presentation and successful fielding of the barrage of questions thrown at them by the Dragons secured an investment of 50 from John Murray of NatWest. Out the Box now needs to submit a final report on their experiences throughout the programme and hopefully will be selected to go through to the finals which will be held in May.

2 Thank you Year 9 Robotics Challenge The Blandford School was delighted to donate to Teddy20, a local charity that supports children with cancer. The money was raised through the nonschool uniform day that was held on Friday 14th February. Owen Newton, Chairman of Teddy20 said "Every day 10 children and young people hear that they have cancer, so your contribution is really important in helping us to continue supporting them and their families. In the coming years we also plan to help children and their families by providing a safe and effective respite holiday home based in Dorset. This we hope will provide local families with a chance to have short breaks and holidays away from chemotherapy treatment free of charge".teddy20 have asked that we pass on their thanks to all the staff, children and parents who supported the event. Sporting News & Results Y9 Football The year 9 boys have worked really hard in training but began their season with a 2-0 loss to Sturminster Newton, however the boys showed glimpses of what a strong future they may have. Sturminster Newton played well, using their greater height and strength to their advantage with some long ball techniques. TBS tried to play eye-catching football by linking some brilliant passing phases together. In the second half Blandford was consistently causing the opposition goal keeper trouble. All the year 9 boys worked hard and tried to bring back the deficit but in the end luck wasn t on our side. Mr Sanders would just like to say a massive thank you to all the parents and relatives that came down to cheer on the boys it was greatly appreciated. Keep your head up boys you did yourselves proud. Netball Results Y7 V Knighton House Won 9-6 Y8 V Knighton House Lost 9-4 Y9 V Milton Abbey Won 13-9 Y10 V Y11 Milton Abbey Won 34-8 Y10 B s V Sturminster Newton Lost Y10 A s V Sturminster Newton Y11 Won Our Year 7 and 8 teams went to the North Dorset Tournament and played some great netball at times. The Year 7s lost 2-1 to St Marys and drew 3-3 with Leweston (these 2 teams went on to be the eventual winners of the tournament). New name on Netball trophy On Tuesday 28 th February, 38 Year 9 Students took part in a Robotics Challenge STEM day. This involved constructing and programming a robotic vehicle to perform a series of tasks much like NASA s Mars Rover. All of the students achieved a CREST award by tackling this challenge. They participated with great enthusiasm and teamwork. Y10 Football On Tuesday 18th March The Blandford School Year 10 football travelled to Gillingham to take part in the North Dorset football tournament. Our team came 4th, missing out on the final by sudden death penalties. Player of the tournament went to Elliot Manson. Skills shine through in football festival. On the 12 th March six schools brought seven teams to participate in a football festival for year 3 s and 4 s held at the Blandford School. The skills ranged from passing, dribbling and basic skills which all the children thoroughly enjoyed. After mastering the skills they then played round robin matches against each team where their newly learnt skills shone through. 70 children from Archbishop Wake, Milldown, Blandford St Mary, Spetisbury, Durweston and Downlands attended the festival and showed great improvement. The sports leaders were helped by student PE teachers from Exeter who played a key role in the festival and showed that they are going to become very good PE teachers in the future. The event was organised by Toby Dunn, year 13 Higher Sports leader, and proved to be a very successful event. On Wednesday 5 th March, 6 teams from 6 primary schools participated in a 5-a-side round robin netball tournament held at The Blandford School. All children from year s 5 and 6 played extremely well, with Blandford St Mary at the end claiming the trophy for the first time. The tournament was organised by Laura McClinton a year 13 higher sports leader with year 10 level 1 sports leaders umpiring. Teachers and parents were incredibly supportive cheering on their pupils from the side lines. The top two schools, Blandford St Mary and Downlands, on the 11 th March went on to play in the North Dorset tournament at Gillingham, where Blandford St Mary came 6 th and Downlands came 3 rd.

The cast have made a special appearance in year assemblies performing One Day More over the past two weeks. We have advertised for those interested in taking a backstage role, so if you are interested and you haven t yet spoken to us, please talk to Mr Cardno, Mrs Bowerman-Ellis or Ms Mutimer now! The production art work is ready and you will see posters and flyers appear around the local community very soon. Tickets will go on sale after Easter so book early to avoid disappointment! More profiles to come next Newsletter! Gavin is a year 13 student, studying Drama, Music Technology and History at A Level. Gavin began his Performing Arts career playing Beedle in TBS Production s Sweeney Todd (2010) at The Jellicoe Theatre in Poole. He took GCSE Drama and Music and went on to play Anger in Sarah Kane s 4:48 Psychosis. He played Stas in the AS Drama production of The Grandfathers by Rory Mullarkey and then took the lead role of Allan in Operation Allan (2013), as a member of Clockwork Productions. Gavin has toured as Valjean in Paris with the PCA Tour (2013) and has performed as a solo artist with The Royal Signals Band, at Presentation Evening and in whole school assemblies. Gavin has a place to study Theatre Arts at Roehampton University. Gavin is also a keen martial artist and a founder member of Last Resort. Gavin Marish Valjean Zoe is in year 13, finishing her A Levels in Drama, Dance and Music Technology. Her career in the Performing Arts began in TBS Productions Sweeney Todd (2010) where she took the role of Johanna. Zoe played Abuse in 4:48 Psychosis (2012) and enjoyed a chorus role in South Pacific (2011) before going on to star as Maria in West Side Story (2012). Zoe played Dim in the AS Drama production of The Grandfathers and Professor Lundborg in Operation Allan (2013), as a member of Clockwork Productions. Zoe has toured Paris performing as Eponine and outside of school she is a member of Stagewise - performing all over the county. Zoe is a regular contributor to Presentation Evening, Blandford s Got Musical Talent (Advanced Winner 2013) and whole school assemblies.
