Gateshead a storm Secretary Rob Jones commented we ve been planning to do something in 2016 at the club to support the Danny Jones RFL Benevolent Fund. We've asked the players to go out and get sponsorship for the event and it will double up as a good test of fitness for the lads. We've had great support from Bob Gallagher at Gateshead Council and I'd like to thank him for the support." Big Well Done to all the players that took part #Teamwork #Stormfamily #DidItForDanny
U10s Round Up - What a year it has been for the under 10s not only have they come on together as a great set of players but have shown some good rugby as well. To start the season the u10s took part in the Newcastle Thunder 9s festival before the Thunder v Widnes friendly game where they became mascots for thunder. One of the big 2016 events was the mini tour to Butlins Skegness to take in the Leeds Rhinos Challenge where they would come up against Hartland clubs this would be a big test for the players but the aim of the tour was to give the kids the chance to do something together get parents together and have a great time to which they did. It was a Scary Night at the awards night where the kids got dressed up and jumped around all night to the games and dancing games. Nice to see the parents having a good time on the Jolly Boys outing to the Super League Grand Final these guys and the other parents have played a massive part in what has happened this year and the club thank you for your support over the year. Storm Players as Mascots before the Thunder v Widnes pre season game
U12s Round Up This year the u12s have shown some great attitude towards Training, Games and Coach s 2016 was a good year with them making it to the u12s plate final but also having a good league campaign. The season started the same as normal with the Thunder hosting a 9s festival which the lads played pretty well in to get to the semi finals. This year we took some u12s to play in the Leeds Rhinos Challenge in which they would get a standing ovation which was fantastic for the lads as having to play 5 v 9 in some games where the opposition would not lend players but this did not effect the lads as they where fantastic through out and even brought them closer together. The Awards Night was a great night for the u12s as they would share out the awards and even share some but the season they had was great and one they all should be proud of. As October came so did the Super League Grand Final and 3 buses going straight to Old Trafford. Josh, Ryan, Aaron and Ollie looked like they all had a good time as well. Also though out the season storm would take in some guest coaching from Newcastle Thunder players Vincent Rennie and Rhys Clarke and Dan Turland but on the last training session of the year we manged to get hold of 9 Cap Welsh International Matty Barron a former storm player himself to give the lads a fond send off for the year.
U14s Round Up This year saw the u14s start with two teams but due to numbers dropping and coach s moving on the decision was made to make one team which worked out to be the best thing ever as the team went on to have a great season. First up for the lads was the Newcastle Thunder 9s festival to mark the start of the league sea. son and then the start of the league games where they played some tough games but got some good wins against Durham Tigers, Whitley Bay and Cramlington Rockets Orange. Storm had so good high points last year not only did they become Ball Boys for the Magic Weekend at St James Park they where even treated to a trip to the Super League Grand Final where they would see Wigan take on Warrington in the final at Manchester Utd's Old Trafford Ground. As the season was coming to a close the league would split with a top 3 and a bottom 3 storm finished in the 4th in the league and would take on both Cramlington Orange and Whitley Bay for a place in the final. After beating both teams storm would face Cramlington Orange in the Plate Final at Kingston Park on Finals Day. The game did not disappoint as storm went on to win the game 28-0 with Tyler Hepple winning man of the match this was also followed up with Tyler taking the North East Junior Player of The Year at u14s. October came and so did the awards night for the club there was a great turn out for the club which had all age groups there to pick up their medals and awards if they where winners. During the Season the lads had the chance to get some extra coaching for Newcastle Thunder Captain Rhys Clarke pitched with players after one of the sessions leading up to the plate final. Also on hand was Matthew Barron who also plays for Thunder but is also Storm s Welsh International. Also a Big Thank You to Adam Houston for is time and help at the club and effort he as put in over the years.

1st Team Round Up Coach Parker Reflects on 2016 The 2016 season saw Gateshead Storm complete their second season in the National Conference Leagues. Despite a bottom of the table finish Gateshead made a significant improvement in games. In 2015 the Storms points difference was -455 which improved to -267 in A number of narrow defeats to Eastmoor, Dewsbury and Woolston in the first three weeks of the season could have been points on the board and changes Gateshead's fortunes. The withdrawal of Castleford Panthers from the league saw 4 points wiped off the clubs point tally. On the field 8 try man Andy Morris was a stand out player in 2016 while Luke Banham, Dom Mewes and Chris Parker showed their steel playing in every game of Youngsters Ieuan Bodman and Thomas Skidmore emerged as up and coming talents in the Storm ranks with impressive performances. Long term injuries to club Captain David Cash, centres Jon Mason and Daniel Bleek pushed the clubs squad to the limit at times through out the season. A big thank you must go to all the players who put their bodies on the line each week also to everyone who came down to support the lads Louise for the running of the shop and also taking some great photos with Anna Winlaton for once again looking after the club the way it does and to all the sponsor s who support us each year and special mention to Mark Ainsley and Tony Carter..

2nd Team Round Up Business Name Storm 2nd would start the season in the North East League. This year the league would be split and then go into a Top and Bottom half mini league with points been carried over into the new format. Storm would figure in the bottom half in which they would play Winlaton, Whitley Bay, Catterick and Durham Tigers with games been very competitive every week the team would build a great team sprit and this showed against Catterick when storm at one point went down to 11 players and still came out on top in a tough battle. Though out the rest of the season storm would go on to beat Catterick at home this was then followed up with a win at home to Durham Tigers in a tough game. There only loss would come at the hands of Whitley Bay which would have a say on the make up for the Plate Final. Going into the last game of the season storm would be playing Winlaton with a win still not making sure if storm would make they final. Below Aaron Stephenson, Jack Inglis and Steve Murray collect their awards from Graeme Neighbour.
Update Sky Try is a seven year programme that will support and develop grassroots participation of the sport across the UK. In the first year the following Club Foundations have been invited to be a delivery partner: Bradford Bulls, Castleford Tigers, Huddersfield Giants, Hull FC, Hull Kingston Rovers, Leeds Rhinos, London Broncos, Salford Red Devils, St Helens, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Warrington Wolves, Widnes Vikings, Wigan Warriors, Doncaster, Sheffield Eagles, Newcastle Thunder, Whitehaven, Workington Town, London Rugby League, Oxford, University of Gloucestershire All Golds and Coventry Bears. This Year Gateshead Storm have been benefitting from this schools coaching which as been helping our u8s grow. The out line of what gets delivered is brilliant and supports the local community clubs grow. The way it works is as follows, each club are asked if they wish to take part in this programme and then from here we the club give the schools we wish to work with then they get approached by Newcastle Foundation. They get 4 weeks of coaching in the school bye the foundation coach's then after this they attend a festival which all schools are asked to join in. So far this year the schools that have taken part are Wardley, Carr Hill, Bede, Bill Quay. From this all the schools will take part in a festival at Kingston Park where they will take on other schools that have been benefitting from this programme.
