16 Background New Zealand Rugby League - Be a Sport Initiative Overview New Zealand Rugby League s (NZRL) More than just a game kaupapa is to create more positive experiences on and off the field and in doing this retain players and volunteers for longer. One of the programmes that NZRL have launched is Be a Sport and it will be sideline at all 2017 national tournaments, including the NZRL Women s Nationals. Be a Sport, Just Support has proven itself as an effective programme developed within the rugby league community (Auckland Rugby League) to promote positive side-line behaviour and educate participants, parents and spectators on appropriate levels of support. NZRL 2017 Women s Nationals - Be a Sport information and resources Team managers will be briefed further on Be a Sport at the managers meeting, Friday, 2 nd June, 7pm Cornwall Park, Puriri Dr, Epsom, Auckland. It will be up to the team managers to inform the players and supporters on how this initiative works and resources include: - two Be a Sport vests per team - code of conducts wallet cards to hand out to spectators displaying unsportsmanlike behaviour. - Supported with Sandwich Boards strategically placed around the fields for Team Champions to reinforce positive behaviour. How does Be a Sport work? Two supporters (not the team manager or team staff) are to be selected as the "Be a Sport" Team Champions and given the hi-visibility vest to wear for the duration of their teams game. The referee will start the game when all 4 Champions (2 per team) are on the sideline wearing their vests. The Team Champions role is to monitor their team's sideline conduct using the supporter s code of conduct - especially as it refers to alcohol-free and smokefree sidelines, use of positive language and supportive behaviour. The "Be a Sport Team Champions are only responsible for their supporters, not the opposition's. When signing the match manager s card, the referee will make note if the team has undertaken their Be a Sport duties. Note - It is not necessary for the same two supporters to be the Team Champions for the duration of the tournament. NZRL are committed to creating more positive experiences on and off the field. 16
17 Continued inappropriate side line behaviour Continued inappropriate side line behaviour NZRL Be a Sport Seven Step Process Step One: Two Team Champions appointed, wearing vests and visible on the side line Step Two: Supporter behaving inappropriately on the side line Step Three: Team Champion reminds supporter of appropriate sideline behaviour using wallet card and sandwich board messaging Step Four: Match Manager and Team Champion speak to supporter Step Five: Match manager calls on Tournament Director to speak to supporter Step Six: Tournament Director notifies NZRL staff of issue Step Seven: NZRL call in NZ Police to assist with side line management 17
18 NZRL Blue Card Pilot Player suffers a potential head injury Did team management remove the player suffering the head injury from the field? YES: Follow NZRL concussion protocols. (ACC Sport Smart Concussion NO: Referee suspects serious head injury.
