1 Wellington Rugby League Newsletter- Pass It On 2014 Edition 34 Thursday 23rd October Wellington Boys-Kurt Robinson, Peter Gubb & Paul Ulberg Peter Gubb (ex-university Hunter) was the winner of the Wynnum Manly Seagulls Anthony Schweitzer Memorial Award: Supporters Award. This award capped off another stellar season for Peter with Wynnum-Manly. Speaking with Peter on board the Sweet Georgia he said it was very humbling to be recognised by the clubs supporters in this way. In his usual quiet manner he suggested maybe he received the award because the club supporters at home games have their permanent set up in his wing corner. Kurt Robinson (ex-petone Panthers) was named the Warriors NYC team s Club Person of the Year. Robinson, who was forced to leave the field with concussion in the first half of the grand final, went into the match mourning the loss of his grandmother. Newly-appointed Vodafone Junior Warriors coach Kelvin Wright, collecting the award on Robinson s behalf, could not speak highly enough of his contribution in all areas. After being barely used last year he made just six appearances Robinson was all but ever-present this season missing just one of the side s 28 games. Every game he never allowed his effort levels to drop. While he finished up with only one try in the campaign it was one of the most vital, the first of the two tries the Vodafone Junior Warriors scored in the last two minutes to eclipse Parramatta to reach the grand final. Paul Ulberg (ex-porirua Vikings) started on the right wing for the Vodafone Junior Warriors in the NYC grand final against the Brisbane Broncos. Ulberg s passage to the match was fairly dramatic. He flew to Sydney on the day of the Parramatta clash in the Grand Final qualifier, turning in an impressive all-round display despite the late call. This included a 60 metre run after the kick off from Robinson s try to set the Warrriors up for the match winner. An NYC rookie, the Lower Hutt-raised Ulberg made his 14th appearance of the season. 2 Pirtek Volunteer Cruise aboard the Sweet Georgia It was all aboard the Sweet Georgia to enjoy the hospitality of Paul Gubb and his boys Peter & Charlie as we thanked many of the volunteers that make our game in Wellington so great. This is the 3rd year of the Pirtek Volunteer Recognition event and we would like to thank Pirtek for their support. Whilst a number of our volunteers were not able to be present those who were there had a great afternoon cruising the harbour, fishing and enjoying a great lunch served up by the Gubb boys. Volunteers are the heart of our rugby league clubs and it is fantastic to see a major sponsor of NZRL, Pirtek, acknowledging this by providing the opportunity for us to put on an event such as this.

5 Varsities named for South Island Clash NZ Univerities coach Kenny O Brien has chosen a team of good youth and experience from more than 60 nominations to play the South Island as a curtainraiser to the Kiwis v England Four Nations test next month. In the end, he has chosen an exciting young team, says NZ Universities Tertiary Students Rugby League Council chairman Rodney Moore. The team includes four players - Dexter Buchanan, Marrin Haggie, Denzil Hokianga and Nicholas Read - who went to England last year as part of the New Zealand Student World Cup side. The remaining 14 players will all be making their New Zealand Universities & Tertiary Students representative debut from eight different university and tertiary institutions, including six from the Auckland University of Technology. Moore says the game is especially significant for the team, given that Dunedin is the spiritual home of student league in New Zealand, where the first university club was formed 60 years ago, along with being the city where the first ever New Zealand Universities side played in The team captain will be named when the team assembles in Dunedin on November 6. The squad in alphabetical surname order is: Chaz Brown Auckland University of Technology Dexter Buchanan University of Otago Marrin Haggie Waikato Institute of Technology Tumoana Halkyard New Zealand Institute of Sport Denzil Hokianga Wellington Institute of Technology Theo Lalakai Auckland University of Technology Isaac Misky University of Otago Jordon Norton Auckland University of Technology Nicholas Read Waikato Institute of Technology David Saumolia Wellington Institute of Technology Solomona Sio Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation Elifasa Sopi Auckland University of Technology Tyrone Tangata-Makiri Auckland University of Technology Uta Toea ana Auckland University of Technology Ken Tofilau University of Canterbury Manu Weepu Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology Jason Whareaitu University of Waikato Coach: Kenny O Brien (Wellington) Manager: David Marsh (Auckland) Event manager: Marama Puketapu (Wellington) Trainer: Johnny Herewini (Dunedin)
