2 Message from the GM... It all kicks off on Thursday night with what is probably the biggest rivalry in the NRL, Rooster v Rabbitohs. Both teams look to have really strong rosters which should provide for a great first round match. The Roosters have picked up 2 superstars in Sonny Bill Williams and Michael Jennings whilst the Rabbitohs have half a team of Burgess brothers and of course an ever improving GI. If you remember back to last year these teams played 2 matches that were both won on the final play of the game after each looked to have unassailable leads. Can t wait for it. On the local scene it was Randwick who have picked up the first trophy of the year winning the Leonardo Va a Memorial 9s last weekend at Wise Park. A full wrap including all the scores is inside. The Jim Courtney Memorial Pre-season competition kicks off this weekend with matches at Cannons Creek, Wainuiomata and a double header at Petone. The local derby clash at Cannons Creek between the Dragons and the Vikings for the Creekfest Challenge Trophy will take place after our 2nd Community Carnival for The clubs will be there taking junior registrations and there is FREE breakfast for all the kids under 12 and FREE activities and giveaways. DINGO NOTICE OF AGM Wellington Rugby League Zone Friday 5th April 7pm Pelorus Trust Sports House Hutt Park Road, Seaview Wellington Orca - Simon Mannering, the new 2013 Kiwi Captain Stephen Kearney, the Kiwis coach, said Mannering brought many assets to the position. Simon is well-respected throughout the rugby league community. He s a vastly experienced player at both club and international level, he s heading into his fourth season as captain at the Warriors, and you know he ll give you 100% every time. Mannering, who made his debut for the Kiwis as a 20yo in 2006, has been part of the Kiwis senior leadership group of players. He was the logical choice to step up as captain, says Kearney, and we believe he can lead us now and into the future. At just 26, Mannering (Kiwi #731) has already played 30 Tests for the Kiwis. He was a key part of the winning 2008 Rugby League World Cup and 2010 Four Nations campaigns and has made 165 NRL appearances for the Vodafone Warriors, 65 of those as captain since taking over for the 2010 season. He led the Warriors to the NRL Grand Final the following year. Mannering was understandably pleased when offered the position. It s a massive honour to even be considered for the role, he said, let alone to be chosen to lead your country.

3 Wellington strip for the Capital Clash Ben Matulino, captain Simon Mannering and Alehana Mara model the Wellington replica strip the Vodafone Warriors will wear in their historic home game against the Bulldogs at Westpac Stadium. The Vodafone Warriors are not only playing in the Capital this season but they ll also be kitted out in Wellington colours for their historic NRL encounter with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Westpac Stadium on Saturday, May 11 (7.30pm kick-off). The club has unveiled a one-off Canterbury of New Zealand jersey based on the strip Wellington rugby league teams wore in the 1970s. Black and gold and sporting rugby league s traditional league vee on the jersey, the kit has been modelled by Vodafone Warriors captain Simon Mannering, prop Ben Matulino and hooker Alehana Mara for the club s marketing and advertising campaign for the match dubbed The Capital Clash. Wellington s Matulino (24), the club s 2012 Lion Red Player of the Year, is fizzing about the prospect of wearing the special strip in the first home game outside Auckland in the Vodafone Warriors history. It ll be awesome not just playing at home but also wearing the Wellington jersey. Iit s a really cool design, said Matulino. I ve played at Westpac Stadium for the Kiwis before (against England in the 2010 Four Nations) but it s always been my dream to play for the Vodafone Warriors in my hometown as well. I can t wait for the chance to run out for my club in front of all my family and friends. It s going to be a massive night for us and for rugby league in Wellington.

Taita Central, Pomare, Tawhai and St Micheals Primary Schools are all Term 1 recipient s, and 8 teams will contest and participate in the Festival which will be held at Taita College. The students have become more aware of what is involved in coaching and more importantly leadership and the role it plays in not just rugby league but right across the board including everyday life. High Performance Sport New Zealand and Wellington Rugby League are underway again in 2013 as our elite athlete s prepare themselves not just for the important club program but also a rigorous representative season which will include the Performance Camp and trials for the NZ 16 s & NZ 18 s who will play against their Australian Counterparts later on this year. The boys that were picked in the Merit Teams last year are apart of the group to participate in the program. Street Play 2013 Hutt City Council invited Wellington Rugby League along to Street Play which also encompassed 13 other sports codes. The theme was Have a Go, which is exactly what happened. Kids turned up to try their hand at a variety of sports including Rugby League. The weather was fantastic, the Dowse in the Hutt was completely devoid of traffic so sports codes could set up different games, drills and skills. Normally reserved for traffic, the Dowse became a sports hub for the day which included Tennis, Connex Group, Les Mills, Karate, Gym Sports, Hockey, Basketball, Soccer, Softball, Frisbee, Rugby League and many more. 7 Leonardo Va a 9 s Memorial Cup Randwick win for 2013 It was a glorious day at Wise Park, Wainuiomata for the 2013 Leonardo Va a Memorial 9s tournament. 10 teams participated in this year s event which did not run last year due to bad weather. It was great to see the Kapiti Bears back on the field too and the Hunters had 2 teams playing. Perennial finalists of the 9s the Petone Panthers were notably absent as were other premier teams Upper Hutt, Porirua and St George. 2 pools of 5 teams played in round robin play with the top 3 from each pool then progressing through to the finals Pool A - Wainuiomata, Randwick, Kapiti, University B and Te Awa Kairangi. Pool B- Va a Family, Hutt Valley Samoa, University A, Te Aroha, Marlins. Early results in Pool A pointed towards Wainui, Randwick and Te Awa Kairangi challenging for the finals and the 14 all draw between Wainui and Randwick was testament to the closeness of these teams. In Pool B the Va a Family and HVS were looking strong whilst winners of the previous 2 years 9s, Te Aroha looked to be well off the pace. So after 20 matches in pool play in very hot conditions Wainui and the Va a Family earned the right to go through to the preliminary final by finishing top of the pools. The semi-finals saw Randwick def. Uni A and HVS defeat Te Awa Kairangi in close games that hung in the balance until the final whistle. Again the preliminary finals were set to be close matches with players starting to tire in the exhaustive heat. Randwick continued along undefeated beating the Va a Family 24-8 whilst Wainui came from behind to defeat Hutt Valley Samoa to advance to the final. The final had everything you would expect and the standard of play from both teams was exceptional especially considering it was Wainui s sixth game and Randwick s seventh with the latter backing up for their fourth match in a row with only 10 minutes break between each. Wainui struck early and were soon ahead 12 nil with tries to Patrick Tanoai and Tyler Grant both converted by EJ Albright. Randwick hit back before the break with Benson Tago crossing. With Wainui leading 12-4 at the break the pressure was on Randwick to score first in the second half and that they did with Phillip Salevao getting over the line and Bronson Marino adding the extras. The conversion left the Kingfishers down with time almost up. Wainui were looking tired and gave away possession and Randwick pounced with Nick Falaoa scoring to hit the lead for the first time. Try as they might Wainui couldn t score again and it was the Kingfishers that held on to add the 9s trophy to their cabinet. A big thank you to all the hardworking referees and match managers who ran back to back games all day to ensure all matches were fully staffed.
