GEORGETOWN FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY Be sound in everything we do. We have a staff of great coaches; it's our job to make sure we are not caught off guard by anything. Uncover ever stone, every week, to make sure we are giving our kids the best chance of success. There is a time and place to-out scheme the "bad guys". But most importantly, we need a staff that will demand excellence from our kids and hold them accountable in everything we do. This is how we will win in Georgetown; we must be willing to do the little things that others are not willing to do! Off-Season Makes the Difference Off-season is where we will build our desired commitment level and our toughness. We must build our athletes. Off-season is where we will build great relationships throughout the program. Our off-season program will foster winning expectations in our athletes. Every level of OUR PROGRAM is the same It is critical that our middle school programs mirror our high school programs. Our middle schools will mirror the high school from the way we call our plays, the way that we line up offensively, how we teach tackling, and how we call our defense. Our middle school off- season drills will be run exactly like the high school off-season drills. We will be committed to developing a program from the 7 th grade up! Grades They can not play if they are not passing. It is everyone s responsibility to keep up with the athletes grades. We will do grade checks during the season; players and coaches need to make sure that the athlete is getting the help they need to be a success in their academics. We should never lose a player to grades. WINNING Winning is not easy. However, winning is not complicated either. Building a winning program requires a huge amount of planning and a rock solid "plan"; a commitment to following through with that plan and a desire to see that plan become successful. 3
Player Expectations Responsibilities: 1. Always be on time or early is better 2. Give maximum effort in the classroom 3. Help keep our facilities clean 4. Accept responsibility for your actions 5. Be committed to your teammates, coaches, and football program Travel Procedures: All athletes will depart and return on school approved transportation. EXCEPTION: Emergency situation- accident or injury If the athlete makes the coach aware that he is riding home with a parent prior to the game, the parent must make contact with the coach before leaving the game. A written note must be provided for GISD liability purposes. The student must return to the school with all of their equipment on game days. Athletes will be given assigned seats on the bus when traveling to away games. Athletes will not wear hats on the bus. Food and drink are prohibited on the bus unless approved by Coach Coulson. Practice Attendance: Excused Absence: an excused absence is where the player has given prior notification that they will not be able to attend practice. The player must make up the previous day's conditioning upon his return. Excused absences that become habitual will cause a loss in playing opportunities. Unexcused absence: an unexcused absence is where a player misses practice and has NOT given notification concerning the-missed workout. Unexcused absences will result in the player doing conditioning drills in addition to any make-up conditioning. Unexcused absences that become habitual will cause a parent conference and possible dismissal from the team. Players who are assigned ASD (After School Detention) or ISS (In School Suspension): ASD/ISS students will do a required make-up workout; player will have limited playing time in the next game. Habitual ASD/ISS students will not play in the next game; player will face a possible suspension from the program. Practice on School Holidays: A school holiday (Labor Day) is not an excuse to miss a practice. The coaching staff will make every attempt to schedule practice at a time that is convenient for families to spend holidays together. Injured Players: Injured players will be required to attend all practices and games while undergoing rehabilitation treatment. All players who experience sickness or pain must report to a Benold Boy s Football Coach so we can make an appointment to see Chad Hennessey ( ext. 7200) or Vanessa Morales ( ext. 7213) at the GHS Trainer Office. Injured athletes undergoing rehabilitation at GHS MUST report to the Training Room at 7:00am, or as advised by Chad Hennessey. If a player must stay home due to sickness, he should call the Benold s coaches office at (512) ext
Playing Time: Every player will play every game, unless they break team rules. Game Uniform: At Benold Middle School, an attempt is made to display our team colors in a very professional way. With this in mind, the coaching staff will not allow players to wear any athletic accessories (towels, wristbands, tape, bandanas, pads, etc.) that have not been issued by the BMS staff or approved by Coach Coulson. The use of face paint, fingernail polish, or hair dye before a game is prohibited. Lockers: All players will be issued a locker with a lock. Players are encouraged to lock up their valuables every day. The athletics department is not responsible for the loss of valuable that are not secured in a locker. Athletes who lose their lock must pay $5 to the Athletic Department to be issued a new lock. If there is a problem with a locker, the student must notify a Boy s Football Coach. Training Rules: The possession or use of alcohol and illegal drugs is a serious offense. Any occurrences of this nature will be handled in accordance with the Benold Student handbook I GISD Code of Conduct. Player Conduct: Football players need to conduct themselves in a manner that will bring pride and honor to Benold Middle School, Georgetown Athletics, and the Georgetown Community. No athlete, involved in the football program has the right to do or say anything that might hurt, embarrass, or degrade himself, his teammates or his coaches. Conduct that does not reflect the values of the Georgetown community will be handled with the appropriate disciplinary action. Penalties for Inappropriate Player Conduct: 1. Physical Conditioning 2. Quarter, game, or m u ltiple game suspension 3. Indefinite suspension 4. Dismissal from the team Conflicts with Policy or Personnel: This section is included for conflict resolution purposes between Player and Coach or Parent and Coach. Any conflict with football policy or football personnel should be handled in accordance to the following protocol: 1. Meet with that coach directly at a mutually appointed time (not after practice or game) 2. Meet with coach and Benold Athletics Coordinator at a mutually appointed time. 3. Meet with coach and GISD Athletics Director at a mutually appointed time. 5
Expectations of Parents It is reasonable to expect your child's coach to inform you: 1. When and where practices and contest are held. 2. About our coaching philosophy. 3. About the expectations for all athletes on the team as well as your child. 4. What is required to be a part of the team? 5. If your child is injured during participation in-practice or a contest 6. Whenever any disciplinary action results in the athlete being denied participation in a practice or contest. Typical concerns of parents that are appropriate to discuss with a coach are: 1. How you can contribute to your child's skill improvement and development. 2. Any dramatic changes you detect in your child's behavior. Concerns of a parent that are inappropriate to discuss with a coach are: 1. Playing time. 2. Team strategy or play calling. 3. Other student athletes. Coaches often need parents to tell them: 1. Any health concerns about the athlete should be expressed directly to the head coach. 2. Notification of any schedule conflicts well in advance. How should I contact the coach if there is a question involving my athlete? If the problem arises during practice or a game, please contact the coaching staff by or by phone. All messages will be returned as quickly as possible. PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CONFRONT A COACH BEFORE, DURING, OR FOLLOWING A CONTEST OR PRACTICE. 6
University Interscholastic League Behavior Expectations of Spectators Remember that you are at the contest to support and yell for your team, and to enjoy the skill and competition - not to intimidate or ridicule the other ream or its fans. Remember that the school athletics are a learning experience for students and that mistakes are sometimes made. Praise student-athletes in their attempt to improve themselves as students, as athletes, and as people, just as you would praise a student working in the classroom. A ticket is a privilege to observe the contest, not a license to verbally assault others or be generally obnoxious. Learn the rules of the game, so that you may understand and appreciate why certain situations take place. Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, spectators and support groups. Respect the integrity and judgment of game officials. Understand that they are doing their best to help promote the student-athlete, and admire their willingness to participate in full view of the public. Recognize and show appreciation for an outstanding play by either team. Refrain from the use of any controlled substances (alcohol, drugs, etc.) before, during, and after the game on or near the site of the event (i.e. tailgating). Use only cheers that support and uplift the teams involved. Be a positive role model at events through your own actions and by censuring those around you whose behavior is unbecoming. Parents and spectators should be aware that the school can (and should) remove them from the premises and can prohibit them from attending future contests due to undesirable behaviors. Game officials can ask that school administrators have unruly fans removed from a contest facility. There is no such thing as a "right" to attend interscholastic athletics. Interscholastic athletics are considered a "privilege" and the spectator who avails themselves of it is expected to conduct himself or herself accordingly. Keep in mind that you are a guest of the school, and that while winning is certainly an admirable goal, it is hollow if it comes at the expense of morals, ethics, and just plain common sense. The school is responsible for the behavior of their spectators. The school district can be and will be punished for actions of patrons in violation of UIL standards and rules. 7
Georgetown ISD Parent/Student Equipment Release Form Georgetown ISD is committed to providing the athletic equipment to be worn in practices and games by the district s student-athletes. However, the District does recognize the desire of parents or students to explore the option of providing their own equipment to be worn with the approval of district officials. The following guidelines are established to provide the conditions under which equipment may be released to the school district for use by student- athletes: All released equipment must be equal to or an upgrade to standard GISD equipment and if approved for use becomes the property of the GISD and its use is then solely determined by district officials. All released equipment must be unused and new; and must include the date of purchase with a sales receipt included. All released equipment must be approved by the District as meeting the safety standards for the activity as certified by the NFHS (National Federation of High Schools) and the NOCSAE (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment). Only district officials may alter the equipment or make changes to the equipment from original purchase such as changing a helmet facemask, hardware replacement, addition of visor, or bladder replacement. This list only provides examples and does not limit other changes to equipment as done by a district official. The District may accept equipment of a different brand or style than what is provided to the other student-athletes, but the release and acceptance of such equipment could lead to the inability of the District to repair or replace the item when damaged. Thus, the athlete would not be allowed to return to competition until parental permission is granted to use other District owned equipment, or the parent provides new equipment or parts for repair to the District. The District will be responsible for the recertification of the equipment, if needed. The District shall make every effort to provide the released equipment to the student-athlete as long as it is deemed safe to do so by District officials. The parent or guardian must sign a release form forfeiting possession of the equipment to the GISD and understands the equipment will at no point be returned for use outside of district activities. The equipment will be released back to the parents at the conclusion of the student s eligibility at that campus. 8
