4 Buffalo Bills & ADPRO Sports Coach of the Week McKinley Coach Honored for Upset McKinley coach Brian Hillery was named the Buffalo Bills/ADPRO Sports Coach of the Week after his Macks went to Orchard Park and came away with a 25-7 win. I m extremely proud of the kids, Hillery said. It was a great win for our whole staff and for the kids. Hillery wanted to play Orchard Park for the Macks nonleague game. I knew our team would be pretty talented this year, he said. I definitely feel that when you play tough competition, win or lose, the competition makes us better. So when we went to schedule our non-league contest, I scheduled a great program. Kaiyer Fields had a huge day for the Macks. The junior RB rushed 18 times for 313 yards and 3 TDs. We have two great running backs, Hillery said, but Kaiyer is special. Orchard Park scored in the first quarter and held a 7-0 lead. Late in the second quarter, Fields bolted through the line and went 65 yards for a TD to tie the game at 7-7. We called a counter play, Hillery said. He broke one ankle tackle, bounced off another tackler, got to the open field and outran everyone. To go into the half tied was huge. I think if we were still down at halftime, it s a different game. In the third quarter, the Macks took their first lead when senior safety Troy Coble returned an interception 30 yards for TD. Our pass rush got to the QB and he threw a bullet over the middle, Hillery said. Troy stepped up, grabbed the ball with both hands and was down the left sideline. McKinley suddenly led 13-7 and the sideline exploded. The kids went absolutely crazy, Hillery said. it was impossible to get them ready for the extra point and Orchard Park blocked it. The Macks held the 13-7 lead until the fourth quarter when Fields broke off another big run. With the ball at the 37-yard line, Fields broke a tackle and went down the sidelines again. Sixty yards later he was brought down on the OP 3-yard line. Kaiyer was gassed so we put Myles Haynes in, Hillery said. He punched it up the middle on the next play. McKinley led 19-7 but Hillery was still nervous. It was still early in the 4th quarter, he said. It wasn t in 4 the bank yet. Orchard Park is an outstanding program and our kids knew that. We played our normal defense. They drove the ball on us a couple of times but we came up with some huge stops. Fields had one huge play left in his arsenal. With 3 minutes left, and the Macks facing 3rd-and-4, the junior RB broke a tackle, juked a defender and went 85 yards down the sideline for the clinching TD. McKinley led Hillery says that the win has given his team a shot of confidence and raised the excitement level. The kids have been fired up all weekend, he said. They have been texting me, wanting to now how to upload their Hudl highlights, asking when we re practicing next. This is a great way to go into our 6-week league schedule. Hillery has been sought after by more than just his players. I ve talked to more media this weekend than I did all last season, he said. Hillery is in his second year as a head coach at McKinley. He also spent 2 years as the JV coach under Ed Wilson. Before that was the JV coach at Riverside for 3 years. Photo by Mark Adair McKinley coach Brian Hillery was named the Buffalo Bills/ADPRO Sports Coach of the Week after leading his macks to a 25-7 win over Orchard Park. He is also one of those rare coaches who have never played football. I ve never played a down of football in my life, he said. I have always been a huge football fan but I was a golfer growing up. Unfortunately, golf and football are the same season in high school. If golf was in the spring, I would have payed football. Hillery played hockey and golf for 2 seasons at ECC. He then went to SUNY Brockport where his love for football took a serious turn. I took a 3-credit course that was called Advanced Football, Hillery said. Pete Mathews, the offensive line coach at Brockport, taught a film room. He showed how the game was called, why motion, why shift. That class led me to be a student of the game. After graduating from Brockport, Hillery coached middle school football for one season in Virginia. That was a great start because it was all about teaching the fundamentals, he said. After 1 year, I came back to Buffalo. It took a couple of years but I finally was able to join the staff at Riverside.

8 By Mark Adair Rhim Leads Medina to Win Medina trailed with 2 minutes to play in the first half but rallied to beat Burgard in the season opener last week. We had some untimely turnovers in the first half, Medina coach Eric Valley said. Our defense is very young and I wondered if we were going to be able to slow them down. Trailing by 14 points late in the 2nd quarter, Medina took possession on their own 17-yard line and proceeded to drive 87 yards for a crucial score. We hit a lot of short passes, Valley said. With time running out in the half, QB Izaiah Rhim hit Mason Lewis with a 30- yard TD pass with just :14 left in the half to pull the Mustangs within That definitely created some momentum for us, Valley said. We knew if we made some adjustments and eliminated the mistakes, we could play with them. Valley says the passing game began to work late in the first half. We didn t have much success running the ball, Valley said, but it opened up the passing game and Izaiah picked them apart. After making a few defensive adjustments at halftime, the Mustangs defense allowed no points after the break. Our defense really took over, Valley said. We gave up just 2 first downs in the second half. Medina scored twice in the third quarter and entered the final frame with a lead. Early in the 4th quarter the Mustangs scored again to pull in front A final TD clinched the Mustangs first win over Burgard. As far as I can remember, we have never beaten Burgard, Valley said. Maybe it happened years ago but I certainly wasn t here for it. The win, though it has no effect on the B-3 standings, has given the entire program a boost in confidence. It s a great way to start the season, Valley said. It was s a non-league contest and a very difficult opponent. We think we can play with anybody in B now. Medina QB Izaiah Rhom tied a school record when he tossed 5 TD passes in the win over Burgard. 6 Rhim had a big night as he completed 14 of 28 passes for 244 yards and 5 TDs. His emergence as one of WNY s top QBs would be welcome news for a team that traditionally runs the ball. We re definitely different this year, Valley said. We called 35 pass plays against Burgard. We ve had to take a different approach. Medina also lost RBs Jake Cotter and Eric Neace to graduation, meaning Valley was going to have to change tactics with the offense. We have two juniors, William Braswell and Daemon Shatara, Valley said. They did a great job but we had trouble moving the ball until went with 3 wide receivers. Once the field was spread, Braswell was able to find running lanes and finished with 80 yards and 2 TDs on 12 carries. Rhim tied a school record with 5 TD passes in a game. He zips the ball with the flick of his wrist, Valley said. He can throw the football. Photo by Bert Smith Rhim (6-2, 240) has many targets to choose from, including WR Jalin Cooper who has already committed to play at Toledo University. People are going to double-cover Jalin, Valley said, so we need Izaiah to move the ball around. We have 3 other targets he can go to. Rhim, who started as a sophomore, maintains an academic average of 94. Izaiah is a very smart kid, Valley said. He s smart in the classroom and he s a savvy kid on the field. He s 100 percent in charge out there and the other kids know it. Rhim, who also plays basketball and baseball at Medina, is also working with 4 new offensive linemen. He is calling our blocking schemes and the plays out there, Valley said. He s a student of the game and he embraces all the learning that goes along with being coached. Izaiah is a hard worker and he s a great kid to have on the team and in the program.

Getting a win in the first game was a welcome change after the Red Raiders started the 2016 season with 5 straight losses. I think it says a lot about our group that we can take a young team on the road and win, Jamestown coach Tom Langworthy said. The Raiders will be fielding a youthful squad this season. Out of our 22 starters, we had 15 guys get their first varsity start, Langworthy said. The Raiders have just 4 seniors on offense and 3 on the defense this season. Langworthy says that this team is the youngest group he has coached in a while. Five years ago we started 6 sophomores, he said. That class ended up being very successful for us. Langworthy said he isn t worried about the learning curve that comes with such an inexperienced roster. Jamestown junior Jeff Seager. We love our kids, he said. They have a great attitude and they play hard. Jamestown will play Hutch Tech at noon on Saturday at All-High Stadium. The game was originally supposed to be played on Thursday. One player that the Raiders will be relying on this season is junior CB Jeff Seager, who started as a sophomore last fall. We had a need in the secondary, Langworthy said. Last summer, we watched him play 7-on-7 with the JVs and he made a lot of plays. We felt Jeff was ready for the varsity and he played well on defense. In the win over Photo by Tim Frank Frontier, Seager started at WR for the first time. He has good speed and good hands, Langworthy said. Langworthy said that Seager (5-10, 165) prepares thoroughly for each game. He watches a lot of film, he said. Jeff is a student of the game and likes to be prepared. It s a great memory for these kids to be the first team to play a game there and get a win. Ken West led 16-0 at the half but Niagara Falls pulled within with a minute left in the 3rd quarter. Jared Carney caught a 23-yard TD pass from Frerichs put Wilson out in front 19-7 at the half. If the Lakemen are going to contend for the C North title this season, they will need a big year from senior Matt Lange. We called him up as a sophomore, Atlas said. He played 2 games for us then we sent him back down. Lange (6-3, 240) starts on both the OL and the DL. We tried to give him a rest early on, Atlas said, and as soon Photo by Mark Adair as we pulled him off the field, Silver Creek drove and scored. We don t have many big boys in the middle so it s nice to have him. Lange, who also wrestles for Wilson, gives Atlas some bulk in the middle. We put a lot of weight on his shoulders, Atlas said. We d either have a bad first play or we started rolling and Olean would come up with a big defensive stop, Furlong said. It was tough to get anything going. The Gators were hampered when TB Jake Lippert could not play in the first half with leg cramps. We wanted to pound them but it didn t work as well without him, Furlong said. Bartoszek said that the re-worked schedule in Class D has made winning division games even more important. There is going to be an extra league game for both Maple Grove and Randolph, He said. So it was crucial to get this win. The Titans trailed 7-6 before scoring 24 points in the 2nd quarter for a 30-7 lead at the break. Just to come out and win was a great way to start the season, Bartoszek said. We really needed that win. The Titans scored early in the third quarter to put the game away. 23 CoverStory Go West, Young Man Senior QB Matt Myers transfers home to play at West Seneca West By Mark Adair West Seneca West opened a huge 41-0 lead at the half and beat Amherst 54-6 in the opening week. The Indians led 7-0 after one quarter and scored 34 points in the 2nd quarter. We got some short fields, West coach Mike Vastola said. Our whole team did really well. The Indians new QB Matt Myers completed 5 of 8 passes for 87 yards and 3 TDs. He also rushed 6 times for 98 yards and 2 TDs. He even sat out the end of a drive, Vastola said. His helmet came off in the 2nd quarter and we let our back-up finish the rest of the drive. He hardly played at all in the second half. Myers, one of WNYs top QBs, transferred back to his home district after two seasons at Bishop Timon. Vastola learned of the good fortune that fell in his lap in the summer. I ve known Matt and West seneca West QB Matt Myers passed for 87 yards and 3 TDs in the Indians 54-6 win over Amherst. He also rushed 6 times for 98 yards and 2 more TDs. coached his brother, he said. Our offense relied on the QB quite a bit. When you find out that one of the best QBs in the area is coming to your school, you get excited. Vastola says that Myers coming back to West Seneca West was good on several levels. Obviously, Matt can play, Vastola said. But this also took a lot of pressure off of our sophomore quarterback Liam Scheuer. Until June, Scheuer was slated to start for the Indians. Liam is pretty darn good, too, Vastola said. Having both of them gives us the best 1-2 punch in our area, perhaps even the state. But he s still just a sophomore and I think that having Matt here takes a lot of pressure 21 Photo by Nick LoVerde off of Liam. West Seneca West has not had much success in recent years, though the Indians were improving. We have had a tough run lately, no doubt, Vastola said. We just didn t have a ton of good athletes for a while. West also had the disadvantage of playing in the AA South which, for a while, was one of the toughest leagues in the state. We were the smallest school in AA, Vastola said. It seemed like every year, we would be ready to move down to Class A, and the state would change the numbers and we would be moved back up again. A combination of a smaller pool of players and having a dry spell with athletes was a deadly whammy. We were the smallest fish in the pond, Vastola said, That was tough for us, especially when you don t have any playmakers. We would walk into OP or Jamestown and lose 3 starters to injury. West Seneca West last made the playoffs in We had Dez Randall, Jeremy Kelley and Tim Rowley, Vastola said. They were really good, multi-sport athletes. They finished 7-1. It had been a while since we had good athletes like that. Things began to turn around when West was finally moved down to Class A and, last fall, the Indians finished 4-5. We are not playing a AA schedule, Vastola said, We See Cover Story on page 22

24 CoverStory continued from page 21 went from the smallest fish to the biggest fish. And, right now, we are in a good spot with athletes. We have football players now. And then, the top QB in WNY, who has already verbally committed to play at UB after high school, walks onto your team. It s a good thing for him and us, Vastola said. Myers had attended West Seneca West and played JV football as a freshman. He transferred to Timon in January of his freshman year. Everybody s population is shrinking, Vastola said. The private schools are recruiting to stay afloat. They have to recruit now, where maybe they didn t have to 30 years ago. But we have St. Francis, Timon and Canisius all in our general vicinity. With a smaller fishbowl for everybody, you really notice when your top 3 kids are at a private school. Myers made the decision to transfer back to West Seneca West after turmoil hit the Bishop Timon program. Timon s principal was let go and football coach Charlie Comerford reigned. Rumors were rampant that Timon was not going to be able to field a team this fall. When he called me I was pretty happy, Vastola said. Matt came home to play with all his friends. He always felt like it would cool to come back to West. Myers says it was a tough decision to come back to West Seneca West. At first I was devastated by everything that happened, Myers said. I had not planned on leaving Timon. We had a great bond with all the guys there. And before a final decision was made, Myers talked with Vastola. Before I officially transferred, I talked to the team and the starting QB, Myers said. I told Liam that I didn t mean for this to happen. I want to come in and compete and I m not automatically the starter. I don t want the job given to me. Myers also worried if he would be accepted after leaving West to go to Timon 3 years ago. I wondered if they going to accept me in the locker room, Myers said, but the guys were excited to have me here. It s been great. Vastola says that, so far, everything seems to have worked out. Liam and Matt have been consummate teammates, Vastola said. Liam plays defensive end for us. He played a whole half of quarterback this week. He knows he has 2 more years to play after this. He has time to get used to the varsity speed and he s still a heck of a DE for us. Myers says he is thrilled to be back playing at West. It s exciting, he said. I think we showed what kind of a team we can be. I m very happy were I am right now. In addition to being excited about contending for a playoff spot, Myers is excited to be verbally committed to UB. I went out and watched some practices, he said. I really can t wait to get to UB. I m going to love playing there. But first I want to win here at West. 22 Roger Weiss Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! 26 Team Reports Costanzo Leads Maryvale Maryvale opened the season with a thrilling win over Cleve Hill in the teams annual season-opening rivalry game. The Flyers trailed 24-8 with 6 minutes remaining but scored 3 TDs to pull out the win. This was a one-sided rivalry in favor of Cleve Hill for a long time, Maryvale coach Jeff Buccieri said. The last 5 years we have had good competitive games where it could go either way. The last 4 years, the game has gone down to the last play. Buccieri says that the rivalry game is intense, if not celebrated among WNY media and fans. I think is one of the most underrated rivalries in WNY, he said. There is great respect on both sides, from the players and the coaches. The family ties between the teams make the rivalry even more intense. Our offensive coordinator, Steve Griffin, coached at Cleve Hill under Dennis Mason, Buccieri said. Coach Mason is now the offensive coordinator for Glenn Graham at Cleve Hill. We are all very competitive with each other but we have great respect for each other and we are good friends. Buccieri says that the rivalry was huge in years past. It was a big rivalry at one time, he said, but it kind of died away. But the credit for reviving it goes to Steve Griffin. Griffin was a Phys Ed teacher and a football coach for Cleve Hill before accepting the Athletic Director s job at Maryvale. As soon as he got to Maryvale, he wanted to start that rivalry back up, Buccieri said. It s become a great tradition in Cheektowaga. The stands at Cleve Hill were full for the now-annual season-opener and many fans were standing on the track behind the ropes because there was no seating available in the bleachers. It s really starting to become a big deal here in northern Cheektowaga, Buccieri said. There is definitely a buzz to it all the the week leading up to the game. When Cleve Hill scored with 6 minutes left to take a 24-8 lead, Buccieri was worried. It didn t look very promising, he said. It was definitely deflating. But, after the score, Dylan Casey returned the kickoff 77 yards for a TD, sparking a rally. That was a huge play, Buccieri said. What a swing in momentum. Maryvale Photo by Mark Adair Maryvale senior Nick Costanzo. stopped Cleve Hill s next drive and scored to pull within 2 points. Senior LB Nick Costanzo, a 3-year starter, made a huge tackle stopping the drive. Nick is a captain, both last year and this year, Buccieri said. He is out top offensive lineman and our middle linebacker. He s a really a huge part of our team on both sides of the ball. Costanzo made 14 tackles in the win, 3 for lost yardage. All 3 TFLs came at crucial oments. He was a huge run-stopper for us, Buccieri said. He s the defensive captain. He takes the signals and is the field general who gets everyone lined up properly. Costanzo (6-0, 210) is an honor roll student with an academic average in the mid-90s. Nick is a great leader and a very succesful wrestler, Buccieri said. He wants to play college football and I think he ll be a very succesful D-3 player. Akron Tigers The Tigers led 13-0 at the half and went on to beat Roy-Hart 23-8 last week... 52 By Mark Adair Buffalo State led at the half, fell behind in the third quarter, but rallied for a win over Bridgewater State to open the season last week. We always have very high expectations, Buff State coach Jerry Boyes said. It was a total team effort and a 60-minute game. At the end of the day, our score was bigger than theirs so we ll take it. After forcing a turnover on downs on the game's opening possession, Buffalo State marched 69 yards on eight plays, Kyle Hoppy capped the drive when he hit Stephon Johnson with a 35-yard TD pass to take an early 7-0 lead. We went right down the field on the first series and scored, Boyes said, It was a nice way to open the season. Bridgewater responded with a 69- yard drive for a TD to tie the game at 7-7. Buffalo State scored again on their second possession of the game early in the second quarter when Stewart reversed fields on a pitch to the right and walked into the left side of the end zone for a 3- yard TD and a 14-7 lead. Were 2 of 4 in getting points in that first half, Boyes said. Bridgewater scored on a disputed 4th down late in the first half. The Bears had a first-and-goal on the 1-yard line but Buffalo State stuffed three straight plays. On 4th down, the Bridgewater RB appeared to be stopped short of the goal but the referees ruled that the ball had crossed the goal line. I thought that was a great goal-line stand, Boyes said. I feel that we didn t give up a score but it went on the scoreboard. College Football Cliff Brown Leads Buff State D Bridgewater missed the PAT which left the Bengals in front, 14-13, at the intermission. Buffalo State fumbled away its first possession of the second half, and the Bears took advantage of a short field to score a TD. Bridgewater led after a failed 2-point PAT attempt. With 7 minutes left in the game, Hoppy hit Ricky Bailey with a 34-yard TD pass to give the Bengals a lead. The defense held the lead the rest of the way. Our defense looked pretty good, Boyes said. Our kids pursue like hell. We have great team speed. We just need to stay away from injuries. A big key to the Bengals defense this season is senior DE Cliff Brown. Cliff came from McKinley, Boyes said. He has all the tools you are looking for. He has size and strength but he has speed that sets him apart. Brown made 44 tackles in 2016, 11 for lost yardage. In the win over Bridgewater, the Bengals defense was not scored on until Brown was injured early in the 2nd quarter. Cliff had a strained Photo by Mark Adair McKinley graduate Cliff Brown was named a captain for Buffalo State this season. 50 knee, Boyes said. He won t be out very long. We have a game in two weeks and he should be ready. Brown was elected as a captain by his teammates before the season. He doesn t say a lot, Boyes said, but when he does, guys listen to him. Boyes says Brown is a whirlwind on the field. He is a very high-motor kid, Boyes said. He s always going. He never takes a play off. Brown is also a solid student and is majoring in Industrial Engineering. He s a great young man, Boyes said. His work ethic sets him apart. We don t have to spend any time with him. He ll do what he s supposed to do all the time. The more kids we have like Cliff Brown, the better.

53 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?

Akron coach Andy Clouse has been coaching football for 10 seasons, the last three as Akron s head coach. He has never had a harder or more painful week. None are even close, Clouse said. This was absolutely the worst. On Saturday evening, just 6 days before the seasonopener, Akron senior Johnny Fiebelkorn was killed in an auto accident on the way home from the Luke Bryan concert at Darien Lake. Clouse was awakened by a phone call at 2 am early Sunday morning. It was starting LB Jake Sarow. He was just hysterical, Clouse said. He just kept repeating that we lost Johnny. Sarow was also at the concert but had left in another car a few minutes by the car Fiebelkorn was riding in. There were 3 boys and a girl in the car, Clouse said. The car rolled over and Johnny was killed. Everybody else was fine. It s just devastating. Clouse left quickly for Millard suburban Hospital. Quite a few of our players were there already, Clouse said. Johnny s family was there. Fiebelkorn, a team captain, was popular in school and on the football team. He was a special kid, Clouse said. Everybody looked up to him, even the older kids. He was a very hard worker and a very humble kid. He had great character. That s why he was a 2-year captain. He just always did the right thing. Akron, a small town, was hoping that the Tigers were going to have a solid season this year. We only have 19 kids on the roster, Clouse said, but almost every starter was back from last year. We have a lot of talent this year. Clouse thought he could steer his team to the playoffs this year - but, standing in the hospital with his shattered players, he didn t know how to handle this. There no chapter in the Coaches Manuel that addressed a situation like this. If there was I missed it, he said. I just tried keep all of our boys together and just love them. We were there for 3 hours and the hospital finally sent us home. They wouldn t let us see him. The sun was starting to rise when the Tigers left the hospital for Akron. I told the kids to get some sleep but, obviously, they couldn t sleep, Clouse said. They went to a teammates house and just hung out together. They didn t want to sleep. When he arrived at home, Clouse sent out a group text. I had them all meet at our locker room at 10 am, he said. the whole team was there. We talked to the boys a little bit but very little was actually said. It was still so fresh. When his players left, Clouse broke down. There have been students that passed away but never any as close to me, Clouse said. Certainly not one of my own players during the season. On Sunday, Clouse and his players went to the crash site and held a word of prayer. On Monday, Clouse held a team meeting. I wanted the players to make a schedule for the week, he said. I thought we should try and focus on something productive. We had to go to the wake and the funeral. I wanted the players to decide when we were going to go and when we were going to practice. At that meeting, the akron players decided that they would try to play their game against Roy-Hart. I encouraged that, he said. On Tuesday we had a full practice but there was no motivation. Everyone was just walking through the motions. The Tigers went to the wake as a team. We stayed for 2 hours and then we had to practice. We had to get a practice in so we would be eligible to play. After practice, a lot of the boys went back to the wake. On Thursday, the team attended the funeral. Six of our kids actually lowered Johnny into his grave, Clouse said. The let us do that. I think that helped, actually. Clouse then had his players meet to practice again. It was an unbelievable practice, he said. We will grieve the whole season, but the kids wanted to play. Everybody was focused and on task. We had more tears and hugs but they were ready. On Friday, the Tigers arrived at the field and warmed up. Clouse gathered his players in the end zone... and pulled out Fiebelkorn s #25 jersey. There wasn t a dry eye in the huddle, he said, and they played a great game. They played fast and hard. After the Tigers 23-8 win the players gave the game ball to Fiebelkorn s parents, who were in attendance that night. This will be a struggle the whole year for us, Clouse said. Not just football season, but all school year. He built so many strong relationships with other people. Clouse worries about that mythical Coaches Manuel. We have a lot of troubled kids, he said. I love football and coaching but there is definitely more to coaching than just winning football games. That will definitely be the case this year. I just hope I can do a good job for them.
