4 East Aurora s Wade Honored for Win East Aurora coach Tim Wade was a unanimous selection as the Buffalo Bills / New York National Guard Coach of the Week after his Blue Devils upset Eden 24-3 last weekend. That s pretty cool, Wade said, I wish I could say it was all me but it was the kids. They believe in what we are doing. They have worked hard to become better football players. Eden was a heavy favorite entering the game. Eden is a good team, Wade said. And they have a reputation for being a physical team that can run the ball. Wade says that he saw his players energy level pick up after the Devils first series on defense. We went on defense and shut them down, Wade said. The kids suddenly realized that they could play with them. We could do this. After East Aurora forced a punt, the Blue Devils struck. Joe Gugino broke away for a 50-yard TD run. We got a first down and then Joe ripped off the run, Wade said. At that point, everything started to shift. For a team that is Buffalo Bills & National Guard Coach of the Week starting to believe in themselves, that kind of play can really bring the players up. That play really picked up all the players who were playing and the players on the sideline. The defense really started playing well and just being really physical. East Aurora led 7-0 after the first quarter. At the start of the second quarter, the Blue Devils stretched the lead. They drove to the Eden 20-yard line and Mike Coatsworth kicked a 37-yard FG. We had a bad snap, Wade said, but Connor Allan pick it up and got it put down. Mike hit the kick. Later in the 2nd quarter, Allan hit Tom Volpe with a 67- yard TD pass to give the Devils a 17-0 lead at the half. Eden pulled within 17-3 with a FG in the third quarter but East Aurora put the game away in the final quarter when Gugino ran 67-yards for a TD. 4 It was a big win, Wade said. We have been down for a couple of years and we have been trying to get the kids to believe they can be a good team. A win like this can really make them believe that they can play with anybody. Wade played high school football at Massena High School in Northern New York. It s the most northern town in New York State, Wade said. We were closer to Montreal than we were to Syracuse. Massena has a long history of winning football. The school still has longest win streak in NYS history. Massena won 55 straight games, a streak that ended in They lost a couple of games and then started a new streak that went 47 games, Wade said. I was a part of the second streak. Wade was named an allleague player at RB and DB before he graduated in the spring of He then played Photo by Buffalo Bills East Aurora coach Tim Wade was named the Buffalo Bills / New York National Guard Coach of the Week after his Blue Devils beat Eden 24-3 last weekend. two years of football at Hudson Valley Community College. After earning his 2-year degree, Wade transferred to SUNY Brockport... but didn t play football. I actually tried out for the hockey team and played three years of hockey at Brockport, he said. He met his wife Leslie at Brockport and they settled in East Aurora. He teaches at Eden High School but landed the east Aurora coaching job 12 years ago. Both my boys were playing at East Aurora, he said. I knew that time you can spend with your kids is something you can never get back. I wanted to be a part of their lives and it was a no brainer to apply for the East Aurora job when it opened up. Coaching at East Aurora has never been anything but a marvelous experience. Wade s son Eddie went to Monroe CC to play lacrosse while his son Andrew played football at Cornell. Wade has a career record of

5 Milt Western New York R E P O R T By Milt Latimer The Best D Rivalry in the State Friday, 7:00 pm, Maple grove Randolph and Maple Grove are two of the most respected small school programs in New York State. They also happen to be in the same division. The winner of their matchup is usually an odds-on favorite to advance deep into New York State Tournament play. Since the State went to the current classification system in 1996, these two programs have combined to win 5 NYS Titles (including 3 of the last 5) in Class D. Ten of the 17 Section VI D crowns have gone to one of the two schools. If not for a 4-year run by Clymer and Jehuu Caulcrick, it might be 14 of 17. They ve met 7 times in the playoffs with Randolph holding a 4-3 edge. They are 2-2 in games played at the Ralph. Last year, Randolph won the state title but Maple Grove beat them in the regular season. One of the most definitive years in the history between these two programs was Randolph would end up winning the state title that year, but it very well could have been Maple Grove. Flip a coin. Maple Grove beat Randolph early in the year 7-6, and then proceeded to score at least 4 TDs in every game of the regular season and playoffs leading up to a rematch at the Ralph for the Sectional Title. Maple Grove seemed to be poised for another state title, earning back-to-back championships. In one of the most iconic games ever held at the Ralph, Randolph would upset Maple Grove. The signature moment of the game occurred when the Red Dragons scored a TD in the closing moments of the game to pull within Maple Grove QB Chris Secky also did place-kicking duties, but wore a special flat-toed kicking shoe. After every TD that season, he would rush over to the sideline and change into the kicking shoe before the PAT attempt. But, this time, there was problem with his shoe and the laces were tied in a knot. He struggled to get the shoe on. As the play-clock was counting down, he finally managed to get the shoe on and rushed onto the field. The special teams unit tried to hurry the play. This messed up the timing of the entire play and the kick sailed wide, leaving the Cardinals one point ahead. A failed onside kickoff gave Randolph the win. Randolph would outscore Dundee and Groton on its route to winning the state title that year. It s a safe bet that Maple Grove would have fared the same. For the promotion of amateur football in WNY! 7 By Mark Adair Burgard beat Lew-Port 31-0 last weekend to improve to 3-0 on the season. It was the Bulldogs third shutout of the season as they have also beaten Bennett (14-0) and Albion (48-0) while not allowing a point. I knew we had some returning players that could play, Burgard coach Jason Kolb said. With the special kids that were coming up from the JV team, I knew we would be pretty good this season. Kolb says that his team has also benefitted from Burgard s consolidation with nearby MTS Seneca School. That school is just on the other side of ECMC from us, Kolb said. It s just a couple-mile walk for those kids to come to practice with our kids at Burgard. Last season, the MTS Seneca kids were playing at Riverside. None of this would have happened if those kids were still at Riverside, Kolb said. It was hard for those kids to get to practice every day. We got more kids to come out for football this year because they are so much closer to us and it s easier on them to participate with the team. The result has been that M-m-m-m-m... GOOD! The Burgard offensive line is (from left) Emmanuel Moss, Taiwon Moss, Alex Montilla, Roderick Morrow and Laron McKinney. Kolb has one of the deepest squads he has ever coached. We have first and second groups that I can actually put into the game, he said. Most of our second-team kids could start at other high schools. We don t have to have everyone playing both ways now so it keeps them fresh for the fourth quarter. The 3-0 start has excited everyone at both Burgard and MTS Seneca. The Bulldogs are starting to get noticed. We were invited to appear on the Fred Jackson Show earlier this week, Kolb said. When we are at practice the kids are having fun. They are singing on the bus rides home, they are excited and having a great time. I ve never seen these kids light up so much. Burgard is currently ranked #5 in the Buffalo News Small Schools poll and #13 in the New York State Class B poll. Kolb says that his players The other students in school know that we are winning and they are starting to get excited, too, Kolb said. While the Burgard defense is getting most of the headlines right now, the Bulldogs offensive line has quietly become as good as any O-line in Western New York. Our offensive line is all Burgard kids, Kolb said. They are good friends and they hang out together outside of school. These 7 guys came every day to work out together in the off-season. They communicate with each other on the field. It s really exciting to see a group of guys mold together like they have. Oddly, all five of the offensive linemen have last names that begin with the letter M. We didn t really even think about it when practice started in August, Kolb said. But one day, we were going over the depth chart and coach Braun noticed it. We thought it was kind of funny. Each one of the linemen in the m&m (and m&m&m) squad brings a different skill to the unit. Laron McKinney (a 6-0, 275-pound junior) starts at RT. He s one of the stronger linemen we have, Kolb said. He s the secondstrongest kid on the team. Roderick Morrow (a 6-2, 215-pound junior) starts at RG. He s the best allaround athlete and the leader of the group, Kolb said. He can move, he s strong and he can hit. He playing great at defensive end, too. Alex Montilla (a 6-0, 270-pound senior) starts at C. Alex is the strongest kid of the group, Kolb said. He can bench press over 300 and squat over 375. He lived in the weight room in the offseason. Taiwon Moss (a 6-5, 280-pound junior) starts at RG. He s a quiet kid, Kolb said. He s always making sure that he is doing the right stuff and always staying after practice to do extra work. He s also the hardest hitter on the team. Taiwon s cousin, Emmanuel Moss (a 6-6, 290-pound junior) is the biggest of the bunch. Emmanuel Moss starts at RT. He also plays basketball, Kolb said. Both of the Moss kids play basketball and can move up and down the court. They are pretty athletic for big men. The offensive line will now lead the Bulldogs into one of the biggest games in years, when Burgard hosts undefeated Medina (also 3-0) at All-High Stadium at 4 pm on Saturday. Medina is a very good team, Kolb said. Medina has scored more points than we have but we have three shutouts. Medina has not been tested by a team like ours... but we haven t been tested by a team like Medina either. This game will go a long way towards sorting out the Class B playoff picture. It s a big game for us, Kolb said, and it should be a great game. We re excited to get a chance to play a game like this.

I thought we played well, coach Rich Harris said, but, a few times we drove the ball down into the red zone and stubbed our toes. We still have to get better. Kenmore West lost to Lancaster when they lost six turnovers. The Devils led in the 3rd quarter before falling to Jamestown in Week 2. Harris said that his players are disappointed with the start to the season, despite the win. We had big aspirations for this team, he said. We feel we should be 2-1 at this point. Everybody feels like we ve underachieved and that we still have a lot to prove. Earning the first win did help. Right now, the mood is good, Harris said. We are focused. We have re-set our. We want to win out, make the playoffs and get some respect for our football team. The kids feel like they can play even better. If the Blue Devils are going to run the table they will be relying heavily on RB Alex Price. He s a horse, Harris said. He s strong and a great inside runner. Price, a 3-year starter, ran 24 times for 149 yards and 2 TDs in the win over West Seneca West. He was an immediate impact player when we called him up to the varsity, Harris said. He was an immediate starter on defense and he has been the starting running back for two years now. Photo by Tim Frank Kenmore West senior Alex Price. Price (5-9, 165) rushed for 1,001 yards in less than 6 games. He missed two games with, incredibly, a broken neck. The game was played in a steady downpour and both offenses struggled on the wet field. The Falcons are still looking for their first win of the year. It was a hardfought game, Wheatfield coach Brent Tylec said. The team that limited the turnovers would come out on to. Our kids were in tears at the end. They work hard and they want to win. The Falcons allowed Grand Island to return the opening kickoff 80 yards for the game s first TD. We worked all week on special teams, Tylec said. We spent a tremendous amount of practice time on it. It was the Spartans first win of the season. We were extremely physical in all three phases of the game, North coach Mike Mammoliti said. We geared up to stop the run. The different looks we gave them caused some breakdowns that we were able to take advantage of. Mammoliti said that his players were angry after losing the first two games of the season - especially the 2nd game against the Spartans other rival Williamsville South. Our guys were ticked off, he said. They knew they let one slip away in Week 1 against McKinley. We missed to PATs and we had 2 touchdowns called back. It was there to be had. Playing Williamsville East one week after playing Williamsville South was an odd quirk in the schedule. To play two rivalry games back-toback is pretty unusual, Mammoliti said. Our kids saw it as an opportunity. If we can put a few wins together, it puts us right back in the playoff race. If the Spartans are going to claw back into the playoff chase, they will be looking to rely on junior lineman George Attea. He started last year as a sophomore, Mammoliti said. He s pretty athletic for a big guy. He also plays basketball and has great feet. He uses his hands like a senior who has been coached for 3 years. I just love the way he uses his leverage. We knew that we would be coaching a young team this year, JFK coach Jeff Sabatino said. We are teaching more than we ever have. These kids have lots of potential but we have 28 kids and 21 of them are first-time varsity athletes. In 2012, the Bears beat Cleve Hill to win the C North Division on the last day of the regular season. And, of the 21 players on that team, 20 graduated. We have two sophomores and two freshman that are starting, Sabatino said. We have several more sophomores that JFK senior Jeff Retzer. play major roles. Instead of having a chance to learn things at the JV level, we had to throw them right into the fire and they have to learn on the varsity level. They are young and they are making mistakes. The coaching staff is relying on a few seniors to help with the teaching this season. Team captain Jeff Retzer is playing a big role with the Bears this fall. Jeff is doing a phenominal job being a leader, Sabatino said. He was on a championship team but those players aren t here this year. He is doing a great job teaching the young kids. Retzer is a RB who has had to start the season at QB. We are transitioning a sophomore to QB, Sabatino said. Jeff is our best athlete and he has filled the role while we help the younger kid become a starter. Sabatino says that Retzer will play more and more at RB as the season Photo by Tim Frank wears on. Our hope is that by Week 6, Jeff is doing what he does best, which is run the ball, he said. Sabatino says that Retzer is a solid student with an academic average in the 90s. 22 CoverStory By Mark Adair The Next in Line Pioneer senior Ryan Merlau is a high achiever in football, school Pioneer beat Dunkirk 35-6 to improve to 2-1 on the season, 2-0 in Class B South games. The Panthers have quietly rebounded from a season-opening 44-7 loss to powerhouse Oneida in the Syracuse Carrier Dome. We were absolutely destroyed in all phases of that game, Pioneer coach Jim Duprey said. We were unprepared for that team. The best thing about the whole experience was that our kids never gave up. Pioneer came home and beat Olean 10-7 in overtime the following week. Olean has a lot of great offensive weapons, Duprey said. We played well on defense but we shot ourselves in the foot several times. To pull that game out in overtime was a real credit to the kids. After the shellacking that the Panthers had endured, Duprey was worried about playing Olean. The most impressive part of the game was our defense, he said. Olean has a really explosive team and Chris Edwards, our Defensive Coordinator, put together a phenomenal game plan. We were playing better but we still had a lot of things to clean up. In last week s win over Dunkirk, Pioneer put together a solid game for the first time this season. The Panthers rushed for 256 yards as they used a punishing ground attack. We finally put it all together, Duprey said. We played real well. Our commitment to the run game shows very well about our offensive linemen and our running backs. In recent seasons, Pioneer has had a plethora of good Photo by Tim Frank Senior Ryan Merlau is the latest in a long line of great high school linemen at Pioneer. Merlau is not only a standout football player but maintains an academic average of offensive linemen. Connor Johnson, last season s standout, is now playing at Edinboro. Randy Colling, who graduated in 2008, has received multiple NFL tryouts and is now playing for Cleveland in the Arena League. And Dylan Anna, the 2010 Trench Trophy winner, is now playing at ECC. We ve had a steady pipeline of really good offensive linemen, Duprey said. A lot of times the O-line gets no credit but our kids deserve some. Edwards, Pioneer s defensive coordinator, is also the Panthers line coach. I think you can search high and low, Duprey said, and you will not find a better line coach than Chris. The results of his coaching speak pretty loudly. This season, the Panthers are again getting solid line play as they gear up the ground attack. We re not as big as we have been, Duprey said. We have good-sized kids but they aren t huge. We have a nice mix of seniors and underclassmen, too. This season, the Panthers line is being led by senior team captain Ryan Merlau, a 2nd-team all-star after the 2012 season. He s a two-year starter, Duprey said, but he started at center last year. We moved him to tackle this season. Merlau is 6-foot-5 and 255 pounds and starts at both offensive tackle and defensive tackle. He worked so hard in the off-season, Duprey said. He put on some really good weight. He put on 25 See Cover Story on page 23

23 CoverStory continued from page 22 pounds of straight-up muscle. He s a really strong kid right now. Merlau has been one of the top linemen in WNY early in the season. In the last two games, he has absolutely shined, Duprey said. He is the guy opening the holes for the running backs. He has a non-stop motor and he plays whistleto-whistle. Merlau made three tackles-for-loss and also recorded a QB sack in the win over Dunkirk. He worked to make himself better, Duprey said. and it is showing. He came in early every morning for workouts before school. He s a great role model for other kids. Duprey says that Merlau works hard at everything, on and off the field. For him, it s internal motivation, the coach said. and it starts with his academics. Merlau has an academic average of 99, is ranked fourth in his class, is active in the National Honor Society and is the President of the Future Farmers of America. He s looking at attending Ivy League and Patriot League schools, Duprey said. His family owns a dairy farm and, I can tell you, they work hard. Merlau says that We have 300 cows, he said. My dad lets me play football but, in the summer I m up milking at 7 am and then mowing hay all afternoon. When it s not football season, Merlau starts work right after school. I come home from school at 2:30 and go out and help in the barn, he said. There s a lot to do here. Merlau, who scored a 1760 on his SAT, is being recruited by several colleges to play football. However, he is being selective about which college he will attend. I want to play football in college, Merlau said, but I also want the academic program. I want to major in Engineering, most likely Civil or Structural Engineering. I ve already turned down a couple of coaches who had good football programs but didn t have the academics that I want. Right now, Merlau is very interested in Cornell, Clarkson University in Potsdam and Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. He has already been awarded a Leadership Scholarship to Clarkson, if he chooses to attend the school. I was really impressed with Cornell when I went out there for their football camp, Merlau saud. But my real goal for going to school is to learn Engineering. I would rather have a great Engineering program than a great football program. But while Merlau is searching for the right college, he is also focused on returning to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse at the end of November. Things really started out rough in Syracuse, he said, I would love to go back and play for a state championship. I thought we played pretty well against Dunkirk but I know that we can play even better. We still need to work hard, show up on Friday nights and get a win every week. 23 Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! It was the first win of the season for the Big Green. Winning always make people feel better, coach Colin Bronson said. We like to win. The kids put in a lot of work for football and winning always makes the work worth it. The game was also emotional for both teams. Portville was playing just a four days after Westfield junior Damon Janes died after suffering injuries in a game on their field. It was emotional, Bronson said. It was a horrible tragedy. Portville invited us into their prayer circle before the game. We wanted our kids to play with enthusiasm and joy and still maintain respect for the loss that we ve all had. Brinson says that, after opening with losses to Cardinal O Hara and Maple Grove, it took a few weeks for his young squad to find their way. The Big Green also had a big defensive stand late in the game as Portville reached the 25-yard line. After that, we got a first down to run it out, Brinson said. Ken Williams was a big contributor to the defensive stand. He finished the game with 11 tackles, 2 for lost yardage. He also recovered a key fumble in the second half. 53 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?

54 Otto Weighs in Again THE EXTRA P O I N T By Mark Adair I saw Otto Slamkowski the other day. He had a scowl and was chomping on his ever-present cigar. Hey, Otto. How ya doin? He gave a resigned sigh and shook his head. What s the matter, now? I asked. Oh, my wife got a computer a few weeks ago, he said. I joined this thing called Facebook... big waste of time. Well, I answered, If that s the case, why did you join? I m trying to keep up with the Western New York football scene and if you wanna do that nowadays, you have to have a computer and use that internet thing, he said. I asked him what he was seeing on Facebook. Everyone s all up in arms, he said, because Bennett beat Maryvale People are ranting about the game without mentioning the teams involved... like they don t want to embarass anyone. Well, I said. A lot of people don t like it when a team from a bigger school pounds an opponent like that. They kind of took advantage of a weaker team. Oh, Otto said, wrinkling his forehead. But, isn t that what football teams are supposed to do? Find a weakness in your opponent and take advantage of it? Well... I started. So, if your opponent has a weakness, you re supposed to try not to score? Maybe the coach could tell his running backs to fall down as soon as they get the ball. That might make it easier on the other team. I don t think you understand the spirit of high school football, I said. You are supposed to use good sportsmanship and not humiliate the other guy. Who said anything about humiliating? Otto asked. What s humiliating about getting beat as long as you did your best and played your hardest right to the end? I guess I see your point, I conceded. But some people are saying that Bennett should have stopped scoring because the game was out of hand. Out of hand? Otto asked. Check the New York State record book, pal. In the old days, there were a lot of games that ended I mean, quite a few teams have won games 48-0 this year. Should we punish them for that? Jamestown has scored 50 points on three straight We make rules so that successful people are as mediocre as everyone else. 53 opponents. Should they get a letter of reprimand? And why should Maryvale be embarrassed? They fought hard to the very end. They have nothing to be ashamed of. I guess... I started. Maryvale just got caught on a bad night, Otto said. What about those other programs? What other programs? I asked. There are a few football programs out there that haven t won more than two games in a season since McKinley was shot in Buffalo, Otto said with disgust. Their community does not take the sport seriously and all the opposing coaches protect these programs by not scoring on them. For years, these same teams lose 45-0 each and every week. Why not truly roll it up on them and let everyone know how bad they really are? That wouldn t be very nice, I said. So what? Otto laughed. Football isn t nice. It s a competition. The idea behind a competition is to do your very best. After it s over, shake hands, share some mutual respect and leave the field together as fellow warriors. By beating them 121-0? I asked. Sure, he said, Then these kids might understand how much work they have to do to get better. You see, the really good programs don t just get lucky. Those coaches and their players work their butts off to get good. They work all winter, spring and summer to get ready for the season. They do a ton of fund-raising so they can attend camps and coaching clinics. Their community and their school district makes sure they have all the equipment they need to get bigger, stronger and faster. But... I started. Unfortunately, not everybody wants to work hard, Otto said. Some kids sit around all summer watching cartoons. Did they run the bleachers? Did they lift weights every day? Maybe if they got beat every single week, they would understand exactly how much work and effort it takes to be good at football. But we re trying to do more than just coach football, I said. We re trying to teach life s lessons to these kids. By not making them feel bad, Otto said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. Let me tell you, teaching kids that life will take it easy on you when you don t work hard is exactly the WRONG kind of lesson we should be teaching. Um... I said. Wow... maybe you have a point. Of course I have a point, he said, but it ll never happen. Everyone would rather complain about the successful programs than try to be more like them. We make rules so that strong and successful people are as mediocre as everyone else. That way, nobody gets their feelings hurt. It s the American way.
