4 Buffalo Bills & National Guard Coach of the Week Bills Back with Coaching Awards The Buffalo Bills and the National Guard are once again sponsoring the WNY Coach of the Week program for the 2013 season. Each week throughout the 2013 season, the Bills and the Guard will recognize a Coach of the Week from WNY. The football program of the Coach of the Week will receive a $2,000 award. At the end of the season, a Coach of the Year will be chosen from the 11 weekly winners. The football program of the Coach of the Year will receive a $4,000 award. Last year, Canisius coach Rich Robbins was named the Coach of the Year after finishing a perfect 11-0 season with the Msgr. Martin Association championship. I m so proud of my coaching staff and our kids, Robbins said after learning of the award. They bought into everything I was giving them for the program. With our schedule and the strength of our league, to go 11-0 is a great accomplishment. The last Msgr. Martin Association team to finish a season unbeaten was St. Joe s in The last Canisius team to finish unbeaten was the 1976 squad that finished Robbins said that, after winning the title and finishing the perfect season, he heard from Canisius graduates from all over the world. I have received messages from our alumni from around the country, Robbins said. I have s from Canisius alumni that are in the military and overseas. That really brought it home to me that we did accomplish something very special. Canisius beat Timon in Ralph Wilson Stadium to win the school s first Msgr. Martin title since Qadree Ollison led Canisius as he ran for 195 yards and 3 TDs. The teams were tied at the half. Timon recovered a Canisius fumble early in the third quarter and drove 77 yards for a go-ahead score. Adam DiMillo rushed in from the 3-yard line with 5:37 left in the 4 third quarter. A missed PAT left Timon leading by However, Ollison began to pound away and the Canisius ground attack began to dominate. After Timon took its only lead of the game, Canisius drove for a TD on the following possession. Ollison ran the ball on every play except one. He finished the drive when he rumbled 13-yards for the TD on 3rd-and-goal. Chris Alaimo kicked the PAT and gave Canisius a lead. Canisius held Timon bottled up deep in their own end and finally forced Timon to turn the ball over on downs at their own 12-yard line. Canisius took advantage of the very short field and powered it s way into the end zone, using Ollison in a bruising, methodical drive. With just 3:22 left. Ollison punched it in from the 3-yard line to give the Crusaders a lead. Canisius then forced Timon to turn the ball over on downs again after just 4 plays. The Crusaders ran for a first down and ran out of the clock. Photo by Buffalo Bills Canisius coach Rich Robbins was named the Coach of the Year in 2012 by the Buffalo Bills and the U.S. National Guard. Canisius beat Timon in the Msgr. Martin Association title game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Robbins says that his team is already talking about another perfect season in We have a ton of talent coming back, he said. and we have already talked about With two high-profile transfers into the Canisius program, the Crusaders look like the early favorites to repeat as MMA champs. But, with games against Aquinas and Ohio-powers Walsh Jesuit and Cardinal Mooney, another 11-0 season will be tough. We want to keep it rolling, Robbins said. The juniors that are coming back want to go undefeated in their senior year, too. Robbins said that since taking over the Canisius program, he has tried to run it as a family-operation. We are a program and a family, Robbins said. We are a program for the 9th grader, the 55th kid on the team and the last guy on our bench. Everyone is an equal part of our family.

5 Milt Western New York R E P O R T By Milt Latimer Iroquois-Sweet Home Renew Rivalry Friday, 7:00 Iroquois Throughout the first decade of the new Millenium, Sweet Home and Iroquois, developed one of the better rivalries in WNY. They met twice at the Ralph for the VI A Final, and 5 other times in the playoffs. These games also produced some of the most memorable moments in recent high school history. Seven playoff games that decided 6 Class A championships. 2002: Sweet Home 42, Iroquois Home News articles after the game mentioned how Chiefs were physically outmatched in the game. It spurred Iroquois to develop a year round weight program. Sweet Home went on to beat Grand Island at the Ralph to win VI A. 2004: Iroquois 28 Sweet Home Home The Chiefs used their improved weight program to shock the Panthers. Chiefs playoff run was also inspired by recent alum Mike O Brien who was seriously injured overseas, his jersey was brought to the sideline for playoff games. Iroquois won the Section VI Class A title and set numerous State records in their regional win over Eastridge at the Ralph. 2005: Sweet Home 28 Iroquois Home In a game that went back and forth, Sweet Home made a goal line stand as Chiefs had 1st and goal from inside the 5 just before halftime. Sweet Home would score on their 1st possession of the 2nd half. Seldom used backup Wyatt Mariacher came into the game, threw 3TDs and returned an INT for a score as Chiefs won. This is still the highest scoring total for a winning team at the VI Finals at the Ralph. JV call-up Matt Corigliano ran for a Ralph record 94 yd TD run in the final minute. 2007: Sweet Home 25 Iroquois Home Sweet Home had made a gutsy 4th quarter comeback to win. Marcus Johnson ran behind Nick Christman at least four times on 4th down to keep drives alive, including a couple of bring out the chains first downs. QB Casey Kacz, who would leave the game after breaking his hand. Panthers would go on to beat Cheektowaga at the Ralph with back-up QB Mark Wolcott. 2008: Sweet Home 39 Iroquois Ralph Wilson Stadium DeShanaro DayDay Morris would score 5 TDs and be a force on defense. In one of the Ralph s most iconic plays, Morris ran over referee Dick Schwede near the goal line. Schwede left the game on a stretcher. Sweet Home would win the NYS Title vs Burnt Hills. 2009: Sweet Home 34 Iroquois Home Sweet Home got off to a fast start in this VI A Semi as they controlled field position in this extremely windy game. 7 QB is Tough As a Bulldog By Mark Adair After two disasterous seasons, Kenmore East rebounded to finish 5-5 in 2012 and won the Class A Bowl Tournament championship. The two previous years were rough, coach Matt Chimera said. We knew last year going into the season that we had a nice group of kids coming up from JV. I really thought we could be a decent team but that we needed some time and varsity experience. The Bulldogs opened with losses to Grand Island and Sweet Home but won four of their final five games. We got on a roll and finished strong, Chimera said. A lot of our kids started to fit in at the varsity level. Kenmore East has a solid nucleus of skill position players returning to the roster. They will also get reinforcements from a JV team which finished 6-2 in We have a lot of good skill kids coming back, Chimera said. Our JV team had their best record since I have been here. We have some good players coming in. The Bulldogs will also have QB Connor McMahon returning for his senior season. Connor has been our starting QB since he was a sophomore, Chimera said. He s a tough, tough kid. He s not very big but he works his ass off. McMahon passed for 582 yards and 5 TDs last season. He also rushed for 146 yards and a team-high 6 TDs. He s a very good runner, Chimera said. He makes things happen with his legs. Chimera says that McMahon has become a solid leader for the Bulldogs. We ll rely on his leadership this year, Chimera said. He s a good leader who has really grown in the last couple of years. Two years ago, he was a 10th grader leading seniors, which is a tough thing to do. Last year when we had that run at the end, I saw him grow as much as anyone. McMahon says he is looking forward to building on the Bulldogs Bowl title from last season. I m excited, the senior said. We have a lot to look forward to. We have a lot of returners who worked hard in the off-season. We got a touch of winning last year but that makes us even more hungry to win this year. McMahon, who is just 5-9 and 150 pounds, has also played three years of varsity football while battled a medical condition that makes it difficult to gain any weight. Pound-for-pound he is our toughest kid, Chimera said. He works hard in the weight room but just can t gain weight. He lifted hard all year long for three years and just can t put on any weight. McMahon has a rare disorder called Maple Syrup Urine Disease, an metabolic disorder so rare that only three kids in NY State have been diagnosed with the disease. It s an Amino Acid deficiency, McMahon said. I can t have any meat, cheese or fish. I have to be very careful with my diet. If I can take care of my disease, I m fine. But if I don t take care of it and burn a bunch of calories, I ll get sick. Keeping MSUD under control requires careful monitoring of blood chemistry and involves both a special diet and frequent testing. I have to take a supplement, McMahon said. It s like a milkshake and I have to drink it every day. Once in a while, I ll have to drink it at halftime because I m not feeling well. Chimera says that McMahon proves his toughness with every practice and every game. Most kids who have his Photo by Mark Adair QB Connor McMahon will start his 3rd varsity season for Kenmore East. McMahon has battled a serious medical problem while leading the Bulldogs. 7 problem can t play football, Chimera said, or even anything else. He has days where he is not 100 percent and we just have to recognize that. McMahon says he is lucky to be playing football - or doing anything else. Most kids who have this aren t fully mentally developed, he said. They end up mentally retarded and are physically incapable of playing anything. Newborn screening saved my life. I am so thankful to be in the position I am. I feel lucky. McMahon says that a liver transplant may be in his future. I really don t need it right now, he said, and I feel that should not take a liver from somebody who really needs it. He also says that, despite what people may think, being 5-9 and 150 pounds is not a handicap on the football field. It s not the outside that s important in football, McMahon said, it s the inside. If you don t have the heart to stick your nose in there and make a play, it doesn t matter how big you are.

We expected him to have a good year but he exceeded all of our expectations. Corrao passed for 1,200 yards and 13 TDs last year. He was also a standout pitcher for the Grand Island baseball team. Will you execute your assignment, will you do your 1/11 on each and every play until the whistle is blown? The how is in this belief statement. Be on Guard and purpose in your heart to stay the course. In other words will you be attentive from the opening kickoff till when the clock reads 00:00? The decision is yours! Be alert and be attentive, focus on the task and beat your opponent to the punch!!! 21 CoverStory By Mark Adair Raise The Curtain Steven Stauss and Albion are ready to step into the Spotlight Later this week the curtain will go up on the 2013 Western New York football season. Friday night, the Albion Purple Eagles will take the stage and try to avenge a tough loss to Barker-Roy-Hart in Week 3 last fall. It s absolutely a big test right off the bat, Albion coach Tony Osburn said. Barker is wellcoached and a they are a good football team. Albion lost to Barker in the final seconds when Barker s Jacob Haight kicked a 35-yard field goal in the rain. Barker had entered the game still mourning their teammate Tyler Miller, who died in his sleep earlier that week. They lost their friend and teammate that week, Osburn said. For him to make that kick in the rain... It was just an incredible ending to a great game and a very emotional night. Albion finished 2-6 last season but Osburn is hoping that his young squad will be ready to steal the show. We got a lot of young kids and we had a very tough season last year, Osburn said. Most of the defense and the offense is back. Osburn says that he is hoping that the bulk of his roster will benefit from the growing pains the Eagles suffered in We re excited, he said. We were at camp this summer and we were working on adjustments instead of teaching right from the beginning. Most of the kids on the field have been through a varsity season. We had to go through some bumps last year but we ve got a lot of kids back and they know what they are doing. Photo by Mark Adair Albion lineman Steven Stauss is 6-6 and 295 pounds. The senior is on the pre-season watch list for the Trench Trophy. Stauss is being recruited by several college football programs. 22 The Purple Eagles will have a veteran offensive line. Senior Steven Stauss will lead a unit that has three players returning for their 3rd varsity seasons. Stauss is 6-6 and weighs 295 pounds and is poised to take center stage in Western New York. Osburn said that he worked hard to get ready for the 2013 season. He s down under 300 pounds for first time since he started playing with us, Osburn said. He s real excited about that. He wanted to get his feet a little quicker and we can already see the improvement. Osburn said that Stauss set a goal to play at less than 300 pounds this season. He s a good kid and a hard worker, Osburn said. When he gets something in his mind, he s not going to be stopped. Osburn says that Stauss has shown steady improvement since he entered Albion as a freshman. Every year, he has gotten better and better, Osburn said. He listens. He makes improvements. I have no expectations other than that he will get better again this year, just like he always has. Stauss is already on the recruiting lists of several college programs and is getting noticed around the state. He was selected for the Rising Juniors Upstate-Downstate game and would have played but the game was cancelled. He s big, strong and knows where everyone should be at all times, Osburn said. Once he gets his hands on someone, they will go in whatever direction he wants See Cover Story on page 23

22 CoverStory continued from page 22 them to go. I would hope he would be a Trench Trophy finalist this season because he is that good. If Stauss is ready to take a leading role on the football stage, maybe it s because he has experience with performing in a leading role. Stauss earned leading roles in the past two Albion High School musicals. In 2012 he played the role of Captain VonTrapp in the school s production of The Sound of Music. This past spring, Stauss played the role of Lumiere, the candlestick, in Beauty and the Beast. As a little kid I was always in the chorus and the choir, Stauss said. I got into acting and the musicals in my 8th grade year at Oakfield-Alabama. Singing, dancing and acting is something I love to do. I took dancing for five years and I think it helps with my footwork in football. Osburn admits that it is rare for a football player to also play such a big part in the theatre department. You could coach for 20 more years and not get many kids across your plate like Steven Stauss, he said. He has the lead in the school play the last 2 years. When he s done with play practice, he comes into the weight room and squats 400 pounds. He s a special kid with a lot of different talents. He doesn t fit the mold of an offensive lineman. Stauss, a team captain, is being actively recruited by several college football programs, including Buffalo, Syracuse, Boston College, New Hampshire, Albany, Bucknell, Wagner College and Division III Hobart. Harvard and Yale have asked about him, too, Osburn said, but I think he s just a little under their academic benchmark. Stauss maintains an academic average of 92 and has scored a 1030 on his SAT. He works hard in the classroom just like he does with everything else, Osburn said. He won t have an issue being accepted academically to any college that wants him. He s from a great family. Both his mom and his dad were athletes in college. His dad played football at Cortland State. Osburn says that he will rely heavily on Stauss this season, like he has in past seasons. He s a team captain, Osburn said. If we need something done, big or small, he s the guy we go to, the kids know he s been around a long time and they listen to him. Stauss says that he has high hopes for his senior year. We have a lot of returning starters with experience, he said. Our line has three guys back who are 3-year starters and the team chemistry is great this year. I think we have a good chance to win the league and be a contender for the Section 6 finals. A run to the Ralph would get Stauss noticed. Some people know who he is, Osburn said. But kids get noticed when the team does well. Going 2-6 in a good division won t get you noticed. If your team gets recognized, you get recognized. If we can make a splash this year, he ll be right in line for a lot of the awards at the end. 23 Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! 23 Team Reports Western New York 2013 F O C U S O N Three Legends Leave Western New York football lost three legendary coaches this past offseason. Alden s Dick Diminuco, Randolph s Pat Slater and Ellicottville s Tim Bergan all announced that they were leaving the sidelines... taking 618 wins with them. While Orchard Park and Sweet Home were defeated in the Carrier Dome, Randolph won the school s third NYS title when the Cardinals beat Tuckahoe 28-7 in the Class D game. As the clock wound down on the victory, Randolph coach Pat Slater was seen on the sidelines with tears streaming down his face. He looked at a reporter and said simply, That s it. I m done. And just like that, after 34 seasons on the Randolph sidelines, Slater retired. He says he did not know exactly why he chose that moment to walk away. I guess when you couldn t ask for anything better, it s the right time to leave, he said. I had been thinking about it for a while. Finally, I thought that maybe this was the right time. 52 THE EXTRA P O I N T By Mark Adair The ONLY Sport I went to lunch at Papa Grande s the other day and I saw my friend Otto Slamkowski sitting on a stool. He had a crumpled copy of the Football Weekly in his back pocket and he was chomping on his ever-present cigar. Otto had the Buffalo News open and was reading Mike Harrington s column. Hey, Otto, I greeted him. What s Mike got to say about the sports world today? Nothin, Otto said. He didn t write about sports at all. Just a bunch of crap about the Red Sox and the Yankees and a bunch of other stuff nobody cares about. What the heck are you talking about? I asked, incredulous. A lot of people care about the Yankees. The Yankees have more fans than any sports team in the world. The Yankees are not a sports team, Otto growled. They are a baseball team. Baseball isn t a sport? How can baseball not be a sport, I asked, growing a bit uneasy. I had a feeling that I should have left this subject untouched. Did you ever try to actually watch a baseball game? Otto asked sarcastically. I m usually asleep by the second inning. Heck, a perfect game in baseball is when nothing happens! It may as well be soccer. Okay, I said. I understand that some people like more action. But what about basketball? There is almost continual action in basketball. Yeah, until you get to the last three minutes of the game, Otto said. Then there is an unending parade to the foul line interrupted only by each coach taking all 15 of their allotted timeouts. I once turned on a basketball game and there were 6.7 seconds left. I went out and mowed the lawn and when I came back there were still 3.4 seconds left. So I went back out and changed the oil in my truck. When I came back in some guy hit a buzzerbeater to win the game. Besides, a real sport requires contact. When contact occurs in basketball, they call a foul. Well, I said, there s lots of action in hockey and there s a lot of contact, too. Football is the ONLY sport... everything else is a game. 53 Hockey is pretty cool, Otto said grudgingly, but it ain t really a sport because they allow fighting. If they got rid of the fighting I might reconsider. Real men don t handle their frustrations on the playing field by throwing fists. They simply flatten their opponent with a good, clean shoulder-to-the-mouth on the next play. I see. So what about women s sports? The only girls that play sports are those girls in that semi-pro football league, Otto said. I bet some Olympic ice skaters would disagree with you, I said. Ice skating is stupid, Otto said. The only thing that would make ice skating a sport is if they sent all those girls out onto the ice to do their Triple Toe-Loops at the same time. The way you would win is to knock the other girls off their skates and onto their butts. If a girl got knocked down she would be eliminated. Last girl standing wins the Gold. Then you must think that Roller Derby is a sport. Don t be a jerk, Otto sneered. Roller Derby and Professional Wrestling are scripted shows. They may as well be boxing. But there are lots of people that don t like football that are into sports, I said. Just look at the sports pages. There is wrestling - Otto interrupted. Two guys rolling around on a mat in their underwear. Lovely. I continued. There is cross country - Cross Country isn t a sport, Otto said. Running four miles over hills and through mud is exercise for do-gooders that eat tofu and bean sprouts for lunch every day. Well, what about Golf? I asked. Anything that requires you to get out of the way and let somebody else play through isn t a sport. Tennis? Ping Pong on grass. I guess that leaves Bowling, I said. Otto started laughing. What s so funny? I asked. I m in a bowling league, Otto said. And you don t consider it a sport? Heck, no! Otto roared. Look at me! I m sixty-three years old. I smoked cigars since I was 12 and the only exercise I get is when I go out and sit on my riding lawn mower and cut the grass. If I can bowl, it ain t a sport. Well, look, I said, I do agree that football is the best sport but - Wrong, Otto said. Football in the ONLY sport. Everything else is a game.

53 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?
