4 Maurino Honored After Big Win West Seneca East coach Jim Maurino was named the WNY Coach of the Week by the Buffalo Bills and the U.S. National Guard. Maurino led his Indians to a 28-7 win over Williamsville South in a key divisional matchup this past weekend. Both teams entered the game unbeaten (2-0) in A South games. Going in, I felt like we had a great week of preparation, Maurino said. I wasn t nervous because I knew we were prepared. West Seneca East used a smothering defense that shut down the high-octane offense of the Billies. The deciding factor in the game was our defense, Maurino said. My assistants came up with an amazing game plan. Defensive coordinator Paul Gregoire and line coach Mark Kawalec devised a scheme that helped the Indians intercept 5 passes on the night. The two of them just created an amazing game plan and the kids executed it to perfection, Maurino said. Any time you are plus-5 in the turnovers, you have a great chance to win. West Seneca East scored a TD in every quarter as the Indians took advantage of every opportunity. QB Andy Smigiera completed 8 of 11 passes for 91 yards and a TD. He also rushed for 53 yards. The offense played as well as it needed to, Maurino said. We took advantage of opportunities with turnovers and the short fields it gave us. West Seneca East moved into sole possession of first place in the A South Division with the win. If the Indians beat Hamburg this week, they will clinch the A South championship. That would be a big step for the program as they try and challenge for the schools first Section 6 championship. Maurino has been at the head of the program for 10 years but has not yet won a Section 6 title. That absolutely bothers me, Maurino said. Our goal is to win championships. We want to win our division and then play at the Ralph. We work really hard in our program and that is our ultimate goal. It would show some validity to what Buffalo Bills Coach of the Week we are doing over here. Maurino says he is happy with the progress his program has had over the past decade. It bothers me that we have won a championship but I want to go about the right way, he said. Number-1 is trying to build young men of character. Right now, we have great kids who behave in school, get good grades, are good athletes and will work hard in practice. We want to do this the right way and eventually we ll get to where we want to be. After the Indians are finished with their six league games, they will finish the regular season against their arch-rival West Seneca West. We want to win the championship of West Seneca, too, Maurino said. We play our league schedule, then we have a one-game season against West and then we start the playoffs. Maurino played fullback and linebacker for West Seneca West and graduated in He went on to play football for Canisius College and graduated in Photo by Mark Adair West Seneca East coach Jim maurino was named the Coach of the Week by the Buffalo Bills and the U.S. National Guard after his Indians team beat Williamsville South He Majored in Physical Education and earned his Master s Degree in General Education He landed a job as a teacher and an assistant coach at West Seneca West but after two years, moved across town to join his once fiercest rival. I had just got into the district teaching and a lot of coaching openings on the East side, he said. If I wanted to be a head coach, it would have to be at East. Maurino was named the head coach at West Seneca East in The first couple of years were very different for me, he said. I had to get used to wearing green instead of blue but I ve embraced the East side and the community and they ve embraced me. We are in this together. Maurino says he feels lucky to be a part of something as special as the East-West Rivalry. This rivalry is a huge part of my life, he said. It s been huge for me and my family.

5 Western New York 2012 N O T E B O O K Akron Still Alive in C North By Mark Adair Akron lost a second straight hard-fought close battle when the Tigers dropped a decision to JFK last week. After losing in overtime to Cleve Hill the week before, Akron is now 0-2 in C North games but the Tigers are still alive in the competitive playoff race. If we can get healthy, we can win out, coach Mike Dean said. We have four starters out right now. We only have 23 kids on the team so depth is a problem. But, if we win out, we are in the playoffs and I think we can do this. Connor Meier (LB), Evan Eckerson (WR), Louis Henley (S), Peter Szlapak (LB) have all missed time with injuries. The Cleve Hill game was a very tough loss, Dean said. Both teams were really beat up after that game. It was a physical game and both teams were really beat up afterwards. Dean says that Akron is not out of the playoff race, by far. The Tigers have a huge game at Wilson this weekend. It all comes down to Photo by Mark Adair Akron QB Austin Mietz has become one of the top players in Class C. The Tigers are 2-2 this season. our discipline, he said. We had penalties kill us against JFK. On almost every drive, we had to overcome a penalty. The Tigers have no trouble scoring. We are averaging almost 35 points per game, Dean said. We just need to find some players to step in and fill the gaps of our injured starters. Akron QB Austin Mietz has had a solid season thus far. Austin has become one of the best players in Class C, Dean said. He s a 3-year starter. His vision and his ability to read the defense have made him a very good quarterback. Mietz completed 12 of 21 passes for 246 yards and 2 TDs in the loss to JFK. We run a true Zone Read offense, Dean said. In the off-season, Austin went to Tyler Stoldt to learn the Zone Read. We are running plays based on how the defense is lined up. Mietz has passed for 596 yards and 7 TDs this season. He has colleges interested in him, Dean said. He s a very respectful kid but is definitely a vocal leader on the field and a leader off the field, too. For the promotion of amateur football in WNY! 7 Lockport s Chambers of Horrors By Mark Adair Lockport celebrated their Homecoming week with a 49-9 win over Niagara Falls last week. It s our first Homecoming win in a few years, coach Greg Bronson said. We lost to Ken West last year and lost to Williamsville North two years ago. I think it s a big deal for the players. There was a big crowd and I think that s important to them. Lockport is now 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in AA North games. There s some enthusiasm in the school when the team is doing well, Bronson said. We feel pretty good about where we are right now. Lockport will play at Kenmore West this weekend and can clinch the Division title with a win. That s something we will absolutely we will talk about this week, Bronson said. This game is for the division championship. If we win, we ll be AA North division champs. That should be something to keep the kids focused. Everything we want to achieve is available in this game. We would get at least one home playoff game and that s important to us. In the win over Niagara Falls, RB James Chambers simply exploded. He scored a school-record 7 TDs in the win, three on long kick returns. The two coaches who preceded me were in the stands, Bronson said. Neither Mike Finn nor Bob Casler can remember anyone scoring more than 5 in a game. Wade Smith once scored 5 TDs in a game and his younger brother Randy equaled the feat in the early 1980s. I also coached Jamal and David Fluellen, Bronson said, and neither of them scored that many in one game. Chambers rushed 7 times for 59 yards and scored TDs on runs of 44, 6 and 2 yards. He also returned kickoffs 95 and 92 yards for TDs and returned a punt 75 yards for a TD. For good measure, Chambers also caught 3 passes for 52 yards, including a 22-yard TD. James touched the ball 13 times, Bronson said. That s all. He touched the ball just 10 times in our offense. It was really an incredible performance. Bronson says that Chambers performance is easily one of the top games he has ever witnessed. The only thing that I have seen comparable is when David Fluellen rushed for over 400 yards in just three quarters, Bronson said. David sat out the first quarter because he had missed practice one day that week and still rushed for 403 yards. Incredibly, Chambers almost tied the WNY record of 8 TDs in a single game but dropped a sure TD pass in the third quarter. The record was set by Homer Geoffrion in The other kids will bring it up to him and do some good natured kidding about that, Bronson said. It hit him right in the chest. Chambers has also announced the fact that Lockport will be a team to contend with in the AA playoffs later this season. He has tremendous acceleration, Bronson said. He has very deceptive speed. He s able to stop and go very quickly. It looks like something is broken down and he ll take off before teams can react. Chambers also plays defense occasionally. He can be physical, Bronson said. We see that Photo by Mark Adair Lockport s James Chambers scored 7 TDs in the Lions 49-9 win over Niagara Falls. Chambers returned two kickoffs and a punt for TDs. 5 when he plays defense. He can turn kids upside down with some of his hits. He s not on defense all the time but he enjoys that part of the game. Unfortunately, Chambers may not get another chance to return any kicks after his performance against Niagara Falls. He may not get any more kicks but it s hard to tell, Bronson said. Some people are kind of stubborn and they may not want to shy away from kicking to him. But, if an opponent does try to kick to Chambers, Bronson says that the Lions wil make them pay. He has vision, acceleration and he s a tremendous athlete, Bronson said. He s a special athlete but I am convinced that he knows he can run even harder. With Chambers in the lineup, excitement is growing in Lockport that the Lions may have a special season this fall. The kids are getting the feeling that they have some weapons, Bronson said. They have the ability to play with the best teams around here and confidence is a huge factor.

8 AA N o r t h Kenmore N O T E B O O K Hutch Tech led 6-3 at the half but lost to Grand Island 24-6 last weekend. QB Lenny Dowell scored a TD on a 48-yard scramble to give Hutch Tech a 6-0 first quarter lead. Dowell completed 5 of 18 passes for 51 yards and also ran 8 times for 86 yards. We have to win out, Ken West coach Richard Harris said. That s been the theme since we started league play. This was a good start. The Blue Devils will now host Lockport in a game that should decide the AA North title. It s a huge game, Harris said. Lockport is also undefeated and we want to be the AA North Division champions. We have to approach this like every day is our last and every minute is our last. Kenmore West tied for the AA North title in 2010 and won the title outright last season. It s a new season, Harris said. The kids have been working hard on making this season their own. They want to bring their own championship home. If Kenmore West is going to win the AA North, they will be relying heavily on junior TB Alex Price, who rushed for 176 yards and 3 TDs in the win over Riverside. He started for us at cornerback last year, Harris said. We put him on the best receiver and he is a lockdown cornerback. He was also Martin Bailey s backup. Harris has been anticipating a solid season for Price this fall. I knew coming into the season that he was a great player, Harris said. He has a great lateral cut and gets North- South really quickly. He has good acceleration and finishes every run. Price has rushed for 560 yards and is Photo by Mark Adair Kenmore West junior Alex Price. on pace to go over 1,000 yards rushing this season. During the offseason, he took over in the winter passing league, Harris said. He looked outstanding. He also had a great scrimmage. The Red Raiders are just a half-game behind Orchard Park in the race for the AA South Division title and will play at Frontier this weekend. We have to continue to work hard and get better every day, coach Tom Langworthy said. The team we have now is better than the team we started the season with. But the team at the end of the season should be better than the team we have now. Jamestown has three league games remaining and is now ranked 10th in the New York State rankings. We have seen some all-around improvement, Langworthy said. Our blocking has gotten better up front and the tackling has improved. We have a fairly young group and experience does a lot. One reason that Jamestown s line play Jamestown senior Zack Eklum. has been so solid this season is 2-way starter Zack Eklum, who filled in while All-WNY lineman Cortland Haines was out with a knee injury. He starts on all of our Special Teams and defense, Langworthy said. He s very physical and plays a very fast-paced and intense game. Eklum is a top student and currently ranks in the top five of his class academically. He is a very intelligent young man, Langworthy said. He can grasp things quickly. You only need to tell him something once. Langworthy says that Eklum has a chance to finish Photo by Tim Frank as the school s valedictorian and is an unselfish player. Zack s main concern is having the team win, he said. That s what makes him special. He s like an extra coach on the field. He understands the blocking schemes. Faller was pleased with most of the Panthers performance. Our defense held strong and didn t allow them too much rushing, Faller said. We had a couple of turnovers that hurt us but that was it. Sweet Home switched from the Spread to their Big Bird offense in the second half. The double-wing attack was nearly unstoppable as the Panthers ground out the clock. It s a nice change of pace, Faller said. We can give them either offense. We needed a good drive to eat up the clock. Eden will now play Olean before facing undefeated Pioneer for a chance at the B South championship. If we win both games we are division champs, Tilley said. If we can stop doing the stupid things, the sky is the limit with this group. If eden is going to challenge for the B South title, they will need more big days from Smythe. Akron had a couple of big plays that hurt us. Nick Anderson intercepted a pass to set up the decisive scoring drive. Joey Burkowski slammed in from 1-yard out for the game-winning TD. That was a great drive, Ostempowski said. We really put ourselves in a position to win. Akron had one final scoring chance but turned the ball over on downs with 5:00 left in the game. We ran the clock out, Ostempowski said. That was an eternity but we were able to get a few first downs and run it out. The Bears now find themselves in the thick of a fierce division race that probably won t be decided until the final week of the season. It s a pretty tight division, Ostempowski said. Everybody is playing well. Akron still plays Fredonia and Wilson so they still have a chance to get in the playoffs. They re a tough team. If JFK is going to challenge for the C North title, they will be relying on their running attack with senior lineman Christian Klyczek paving the way. He s a very tough kid, Ostempowski said. I-Prep has a lot of talent, Fischer said. If we let them get in the game they will be dangerous. They are huge and athletic. We need to stay focused. 22 CoverStory The Trojans Horse Andy Smigiera is leading West Seneca East in the A South By Mark Adair West Seneca East won a huge game when the Trojans beat Williamsville South 28-7 last weekend. It was a big win, East coach Jim Maurino said. It was one of the biggest we ve had in a few years. With the victory, West Seneca East took over sole possession in the AA South Division with a 4-0 record. While West Seneca East was expected to be a good team this fall, the Trojans were somehow overlooked when the top programs were discussed during the pre-season hype. After being around for 10 years, I ve learned to stop guessing, Maurino said. All you can do is just be the best prepared team you can be each week. The games will take care of themselves. Maurino says that the week leading up to the game against Williamsville South was one of the most productive weeks he has had. Photo by Walter Stanley West Seneca East senior Andy Smigiera has led the Trojans to a 4-0 record this season. Smigiera is a 3-year starter at QB for West Seneca East. All week kids were battling each other and making each other better, he said. Nobody just went through the motions. I can t say enough about our Scout Team. They are a big reason why we are having such a good season. Maurino says that Scout players - like the Trojans in general - are often overlooked. Those kids are unbelievably crucial to a program, he said. If those kids buy in for you, your team is going to be better because of what those Scout players do during the week. Scout players are responsible to imitate the coming opponent so the starters will no what to look for once the game starts. It s not a glamorous job. 20 They may not play in the games but they get their snaps during the week, Maurino said. If those kids play hard, they make us better by pushing the starters. Right now, we are competing on a high-level in practice and those guys are making us better. West Seneca East now has two games against league opponents before closing the season with their tradition crosstown rival West Seneca West. We have to take care of next two weeks, Maurino said. We have to win the next two games. Once we get past these two games, we have an all-out battle with West. It s like a oneweek season. If the Trojans are going to win the A South Division, they will be relying heavily on quarterback Andy Smigiera. Andy is one of the hardest working players I have had, Maurino said. He does all the things you need to be successful both on and off the field. I just can t say enough about him. Smigiera is a 3-year starter and a team captain for the Trojans. Smigiera is the one Trojan who was not overlooked during this pre-season as he was mentioned as a possible Connolly Cup finalist. I believe he s a Top 5 kid in Western New York, Maurino said. Because of the multitude of things he does for us, I think he s one of the top kids in our area. When you look at the Connolly Cup, it goes to the best player. Andy would be in that conversation for sure. Smigiera has completed 30 of 46 passes this season for 489 yards and 4 TDs. He also leads West Seneca See Cover Story on page 23

23 CoverStory continued from page 22 East in rushing with 335 yards. He also starts on defense at cornerback. He s also averaging over 40 yards per punt, Maurino said, and 95 percent of his kickoffs are out of the end zone for touchbacks. Smigiera is also one of WNY s leading kick returners. We have him back deep on the kickoff returns, Maurino said. If they kick it deep, he has such great speed that there is always a chance he will break it. He s like lightning. Smigiera also runs track for West Seneca East. Last spring, he finished 2nd in Section 6 in the 200- meter dash and 3rd in the 100-meter dash. He has been timed at 10.7 seconds in the 100. He missed the NY State meet with an injury but finished 5th in the state in the 100 as a sophomore in the spring of He does so many things at such a high level, Maurino said. Everywhere you put Andy he makes your team better. Smigiera is also a top student, maintaining an academic average of 93 while taking Advanced Placement classes. He is also getting some long looks from college football programs. I m sure there might be scholarship offers for track, Maurino said, but he has his heart set on playing college football. The Division I level is based so much on speed that I believe he could play at that level. Smigiera attended the football camp at the University at Buffalo and was timed in the 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds. No matter where a Division I team played him, he could be a help to them, Maurino said. He could play cornerback, quarterback or wide receiver at that level. I have that much confidence in him. Maurino has heard from several colleges that are interested in Smigiera. The UB coaches have talked to me, he said, and we ve had a lot of visits from the Patriot League teams. He s a great player and he does really well in school. I think any program would want him. Despite all the college programs trying to secure his services in the future, Smigiera says he doesn t want to think past this week s game against Hamburg. We just want to concentrate on Hamburg right now, he said. The playoffs are always in the back of our mind but we really need to worry about Hamburg right now. Smigiera wants to major in Sports Medicine in college. I d like to be a Sports Trainer some day, he said. I definitely want to play football in college but I don t know where. Smigiera learned to punt while playing soccer as a child. He did not play football until he was in the 9th grade. I started kicking a ball when I was 6, he said. That s how I learned to punt. When I was starting my freshman year, my dad asked me if I wanted to play football. I gave it a try and I loved it. And the Trojans are grateful that he did. 21 Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! 24 Team Reports Western New York 2012 F O C U S O N Cleve Hill Comes Back Cleve Hill earned a huge win when the Golden Eagles beat Wilson last weekend. We were really aggressive and were able to make just a few more plays than Wilson did, coach Glen Graham said. Cleve Hill trailed 13-8 at the half. We had some opportunities to score in the first half but had a number of turnovers, Graham said. We lost two fumbles and an interception. Graham says that the coaching staff did not make any cghanges at the half. We didn t make any adjustments, he said. We just played better football. It was the second straight week that the Eagles were behind at the half and came back to win a division game. Cleve Hill trailed Akron 24-6 with 17 minutes to play in the game and rallied to win in overtime. We were lucky to survive, Graham said. Our coaching staff trusts these kids to do the job. To our kids credit, they have risen to occassion. Cleve Hill is now 4-0 and has a huge game at Fredonia this weekend. The winner will have an inside track on winning the C North Division. If you look at Class C, the North Division is crazy this year. Someone could win a league championship with a loss. Right now, it s wide open. Graham says that the tight games his team has faced the last two weeks will help during the stretch run and during the playoffs. It s not always good to win big every week, he said. That hurt us in Most of our starters had played just half of the game all season. It s not a bad thing to be tested, especially if the kids find a way to win. 55 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?
