Buffalo Bills & NY National Guard Coach of the Week Brown Leads Cards back to Dome Randolph coach Brent Brown was named the Coach of the Week by the Buffalo Bills and the New York National Guard after his Cardinals beat Tioga 35-6 in the New York State semifinals in Rochester. The win gives the Cardinals a second straight trip to the Syracuse Carrier Dome for the Class D New York State championship game. Randolph will play Chester (9) on Friday at 12:00 pm for the title. Randolph jumped on Tioga (4) early and led 14-0 in the first quarter. We held them to a couple of 3-and-outs and got good field position, Brown said. Our defense was super. Chris Doubek scored both TDs on runs of 16 yards. He finished with 203 yards on 27 carries. He s had a heck of a season, Brown said. Randolph stretched their lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter. After a 12-play, 63- yard drive, Mitchell Maycock tossed a 19-yard TD pass to Bryce Morrison. Mitchell throws the ball good, Brown said. and we have some guys who can catch it. 4 Maycock has passed for 871 yards and 15 TDs this season. He has thrown significantly more passes this season than the Cardinals have attempted in the past before Pat Slater retired. Slater once led the Cardinals through the NYS tournament without throwing a single pass. We throw 7 or 8 times a game, Brown said. It makes our play-action work better. The Cardinals defense gave up a total of three first downs in the win. The starting unit allowed just one first down, and none in the first half. That s impressive, Brown said. Against that Tioga team, that s impressive. Randolph beat Tioga 7-6 in the NYS semifinals in The Cardinals stopped a 2-point PAT attempt with less than six minutes to play in the game. We thought it would be the same kind of a game, Brown said, but our defense just didn t give them anything at all. Brown was quick to praise Randolph defensive coordinator Nate Armella. Our defense really couldn t have been any better, Brown said. Nate s been with us for a while. He was on the JV staff for a while and came up to the varsity when Pat retired. Randolph has now won 22 straight games. Last year, the Cardinals lost to Maple Grove in Week 3 to fall to 1-2 before winning 10 straight games and claiming the NYS Class D championship. From that point on, this group has gotten better and better and better, Brown said. We were young last year and started out slow. Once we got a little confidence it was easier to keep it going. Brown is a firsttime head coach, however, he has been at Randolph since I coached the JV defense under Pat, Brown said. I came up to the varsity in the fall of Brown was Slater s defensive coordinator for a decade. He took Photo by Buffalo Bills Randolph coach Brent Brown was named the Coach of the Week by the Buffalo Bills and the NY National Guard after the Cardinals beat Tioga to advance to the NYS championship game in the Carrier Dome. over the program when the legendary Slater retired after winning more than 200 games. I did the defense straight through until this year, Brown said. Kevin Hind, Gerald Carlson and Greg Sherlock have all been on staff for more than 15 years. We have a bunch that have been here for a while, Brown said. The whole staff has been around the block. That made this transition pretty easy. Brown played quarterback at Pine Valley. I wasn t very good, he said. I was a tiny little kid. We had a good running back so all I had to do was hand off. Brown was a star pitcher and outfielder for the baseball team. He played baseball at Jamestown Community College before finishing his career at UB and Brockport. I coached varsity baseball for 9 years but stopped when my wife and I had kids, Brown said. I m going to coach modified baseball this spring.

The All-FW Team In this issue is our annual All-Football Weekly team. Before the season started I asked seven area fans who are deeply involved in the Western New York Football scene to help with the selection process. Each of the seven went WAY above-and-beyond the call of duty and submitted four complete all-star teams. I will not name these people. One of our criteria is that the committee members identities will remain a secret. I do not want them to start getting pressured to name certain kids because people know who they are... and where they live. Here are a few items to remember when looking over the selections. 1. All-Football Weekly: These teams are made up of players from teams that have participated with the Football Weekly. If your school has chosen not to participate, your players are not eligible. There are five teams in Western New York that chose not to participate with our magazine in Players from those five schools are not recognized on the All-Football Weekly team. 2. Positions: Each Offensive Team is made up of 1 Quarterback, 3 Running Backs, 2 Wide Receivers, 5 man, 1 Tight End, 1 kicker and 1 Specialty Player total. S E C T I O N 6 Football Upstate W E E K L Y Each Defensive Team is made up of 4 Defensive Linemen, 4 s, 4 Defensive Backs, 1 Punter and 1 Specialty Player total. 3. Team Record: The All Football Weekly Team is loaded with players who helped their teams reach Ralph Wilson Stadium and the Section 6 finals. It makes sense... the best teams obviously have the best players. While a losing record did not disqualify any player from being recognized as one of the best players in Western New York, players certainly got noticed when their teams won more games. 4. Big Games: Big regular season games and playoff games carried more weight than other games. Big players deliver in big games. 5 Friends in High Places November 21, 2013 Issue No Pages A Perfect 10 QB Jake Sisson leads Jamestown to 10-1 and is named the 2013 Player of the Year Former Roomates Named WNY s Top Coaches for Behavior Counts: Players who were suspended for behavioral reasons were not eligible for our postseason honors. The best players should carry themselves with some sense of dignity. Players who were discipline problems for their teams or their schools were not recognized at all. Behavior counts kids... behavior counts more than winning football games. 6. Grades Count: Most of these players are superior students... or at least good students. A few struggle with academics but they try hard. Players who were academically suspended because of outright laziness were not eligible for the team. If you can t give half an effort in the classroom, we will not reward you with post-season honors. 7. One Per Customer: Many all-star teams will list players at multiple positions. For the All-Football Weekly team, each player is listed once. If a lineman is named a 1st-team offensive lineman, he is not eligible to be recognized as a 2nd-team linebacker. Jamestown QB Jake Sisson is our Player of the Year and, therefore, is not eligible to be listed at a position. 8. Attitude Counts: Players that were guilty of poor sportsmanship were downgraded. We may not throw them off the team, but our best players do not taunt opposing players or get into obscene screaming matches with opposing fans or get ejected for throwing a punch. The best know they are the Two teams Move on to Carrier Dome All-star teams named by WNY Coaches Canisius Runs Past St. Joe s for MMA Title PLUS: State Records Team Reports NYS Rankings Schedules ALSO: Sideline Chatter Extra Point Section 6 Standings INSIDE: best and they act like it. 9., All-League Teams: Each League in WNY submitted an All-League team as chosen by the coaches. Also, each coach in Western New York was asked to nominate players for a category that we call Super Seniors. These are players that have given everything they have to their programs. These kids may not be allstars, but they are all good kids who gave everything they possibly could for the betterment of their teams. We wanted to salute them one final time... and thank them for putting on a great show for all of us fans out here.

Canisius Wins 2nd Straight Title By Mark Adair Qadree Ollison broke away for an 86-yard TD run late in the second quarter to give Canisius a 21-0 lead at the half and the Crusaders beat St. Joe s 41-7 to win the Msgr. Martin Association title at Ralph Wilson Stadium. He saved his best game for last, Canisius coach Roch Robbins said. It was the championship game. It was against St. Joe s and it was at the Ralph. What more could you ask from a kid? He saved his best game for the last. Ollison finished the night with 240 yards and 5 TDs on 20 carries as the Crusaders won their second straight title. Q also made a statement to any media members or fans who doubted him as he posted lower numbers than he did ;ast season. He rushed for 1,800 yards last year, Robbins said. He had 1,500 this year and he had almost 100 less carries. Ollison was named the Player of the Year by the Football Weekly and was a finalist for the Connolly Cup. Many area fans assumed Ollison would win both awards in a walk this season. I think everybody thought he was going to rush for 3,000 yards this season, Robbins said. But we had an offensive line with 4 new starters. Everyone tried to stop Q this year and he never got frustrated. To do everything that he did, he had a better season this year than last year. In the MMA title game, Ollison exploded in the first half as he ran for 174 yards on just 10 carries. He scored TDs 6, 51 and 86 yards. When the Marauders pulled within 21-7 Canisius responded with a long drive capped when QB Jacob Loucks hit Ryan Richards with a 28-yard TD pass. Ollison finished the scoring as he rushed for TDs of 19 and 2 yards in the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter with Canisius safely ahead, Robbins pulled Ollison from the game and gave him a prolonged hug as the senior reached the sidelines. That was the last time he would play football for Canisius, Robbins said. Every snap I have ever coached at Canisius, Canisius running back Qadree Ollison breaks away for an 86-yard TD run in the Crusaders 41-7 win over St. Joe s in the Msgr. Martin Association title game. 7 Photo by Mark Adair Qadree has been there.i think the world of that kid. After the game and the career he had, it was nice to share a moment on the field at the Ralph with him. Canisius finished 9-2 on the season, losing only to Aquinas (3-0) and Cardinal Mooney (9-7). Canisius did not allow a TD in either game. Cardinal Mooney will play in the Ohio State semifinals this week while Aquinas will play for the NYS Class AA championship on Sunday. We lost two games by a total of five points, Robbins said. And, we may have lost to the state champions of two different states. The Crusaders starting defense finally allowed a TD for the first time this season when St. Joe s Nigel Davis scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter. Davis finished the night with 73 yards rushing for St. Joe s. Nigel made a hell of an effort, Robbins said. He s a great player. Canisius allowed just 43 points this season while 8 of 11 opponents did not record 100 yards of total offense. The Crusaders had six shutouts among their nine wins - and did not allow a TD in the two losses. Late in the game, Robbins called time out and called his defense into a huddle. Before the time out ended, Robbins replaced the entire unit, allowing the Canisius fans to applaud. I just wanted those kids to get recognition for what they did, Robbins said. They made up the baddest defense I have ever seen in high school football. It was an amazing defense and they had an amazing year. A lot of fans were clearning out by then but I saw some parents standing and clapping. Robbins did say that he was frustrated by the apparent lack of respect for his squad throughout the area. We had a lot of returning starters, he said, and I think everyone expected us to go 11-0 again. I understand that anything less than 11-0 would be seen as an unsuccessful season but we had a pretty successful season. This senior class was Their body of work was pretty impressive.

CTF s vision is to develop the hearts of coaches and athletes to be men of character for others. This Week in the ANSWER THE CALL process is the word Confidence. The Simple ATC statement is JUST.BELIEVE! Confidence is having full belief and acting on it without doubt! The Outcome is Faith overcomes Fear. As an athlete sometimes you just have to trust with all your heart and not lean or depend on your own understanding. It is having the mental attitude that all things are possible for those who believe. Our nation at one time had a confidence in God. This is evident on the dollar bill In GOD WE TRUST. Now we have a tendency to trust the money more. When The Heart of a Champion Character Playbook theme is Answer The Call! it comes to the game, one of the most confident personalities in the NFL is Peyton Manning. He says the reason you have confidence is because of how hard you have prepared and how hard you have worked. Also, perfect love destroys fear. This is an enormous statement that says you will have your teammates back when he fails. When you do, they will play fast and not worry about mistakes. When it comes to confidence a Man of integrity plays and lives confidently and securely. The reason is simple, He is COMPLETE. Complete athletes play with confidence and will always ANSWER THE CALL. 30 CoverStory By Mark Adair A Perfect 10 Jamestown QB Jake Sisson had a season for the ages Jamestown lost to Aquinas in the Far West Regionals to end the season at The loss did nothing to dampen the season as the Red Raiders won the school s first Section 6 title since Jamestown coach Tom Langworthy says that ending the season with a loss to a private-school does not leave him bitter. Aquinas is a really great team, he said, We had three or four opportunities to get the tie and we didn t do it. If we get to play them again, maybe we win. But we don t get to play them again. The Raiders trailed in the fourth quarter. The Raiders intercepted a pass near midfield but lost a fumble on the return. Aquinas scored a few plays later to cement the win. It was a great game, Langworthy said. The Aquinas kids and their coaches were classy. Langworthy says that this fall has been enjoyable. More so than any season since he took over the program five years ago. I m so proud of our kids, he said. They work hard. There s no drama and no egos. No one cares who gets the credit. If you do things the right way, even if you lose, you can still be proud. One player who can be proud is senior QB Jake Sisson, who passed for 299 yards and a TD in the loss. He finished his senior season with 3,170 passing yards and 33 TD passes. He also rushed for 718 yards and scored 24 TDs. Sisson also set the WNY Single Game passing record when he threw for 508 yards in a win over Kenmore West in Week 2. His 3,170 passing yards breaks Chad Kelly s Photo by Mark Adair Jamestown QB Jake Sisson passed for 3,170 yards and 33 TDs this season. He also rushed for 718 yards and 24 TDs. Sisson was named Player of the Year by the Football Weekly. 30 record that was set just two years ago. His team averaged over 52 points per game. For all of that, Sisson was named the Player of the Year by the Football Weekly. Jake has been the best player in Western New York, bar none, Langworthy said. He had an amazing season. I never thought I would be a coach that passed more than ran but when you have a QB like Jake, you ve got to go with the talent of the kids. Langworthy was actually surprised to get Sisson on his team. Sisson had attended the nearby Southwestern School District until his family moved to Arkansas before he entered the 8th grade. I do remember Jake, Langworthy said. He was a lightweight wrestler in the 8th grade. I would go to watch my brother Patrick s wrestling matches, Jake was also on the team. When the Sisson family moved to Arkansas, Langworthy didn t think of Sisson again over the next three years. However, just over 16 months ago, the coach was notified that a new player would be joining his team. The week before practice started, I got a call from my Athletic Director, Langworthy said. He told me that George Sisson was a finalist for a job opening in Jamestown and that if he was hired, Jake would be joining our team. George Sisson was hired and Jake immediately came to Jamestown, even ahead of his family. Jake s father was hired for the job on a Friday, Langworthy said. Jake flew in to Jamestown on Sunday See Cover Story on page 31

CoverStory continued from page 32 night and he made it to practice on Monday morning. He stayed with his grandparents until his family was able to get settled. Langworthy still didn t know the type of QB that had just dropped onto his roster. We didn t know much about him, he said, but when he came to practice and started working we were able to see that he was pretty talented. The transition was easy for Sisson, who didn t even have to make new friends. He already knew many of the Jamestown players from youth sports. A lot of our kids knew him through youth basketball, Langworthy said. Jake and Zack Panebianco had been friends for a few years. He got the respect of the team pretty quickly because the kids saw how hard he worked. Sisson had a good season in 2012 as Jamestown advanced to the Class AA title game, which the Raiders lost to Orchard Park. Last year Jake was really solid, Langworthy said. He was a good player and one of our best players. But it wasn t until we played our first game this year that I saw how headand-shoulders he was over other high school players. When Jamestown led Niagara Falls 41-0 after the first quarter of the opening week, Langworthy says his eyes were opened. The following week, Sisson passed for 508 yards passing in a win over Kenmore West. I just said, Holy Cow. Langworthy said. Not only is he good but he might be the best player in Western New York. Turns out, he is. Langworthy says that Sisson, who is 6-0 and 190 pounds, will probably not get many Division I-A scholarship offers because of his height. He already has a lot of Division III schools that are interested, Langworthy said. I will also personally talk to some D-2 coaches. Whoever lands him will be a happy coach. It doesn t matter if he s 6-5 or 5-9. What he can do ion the football field has nothing to do with height. He is so talented and so gifted. Sisson says he is proud of the Raiders season. We had a very successful season, Sisson said. We went 10-1 and won the Section 6 title. We got all of our goals except the last one. We wanted to win the states but we had a season we can be very proud to look at. Sisson said that he did not know he had passed the 3,000-yard mark or that he had broken Chad Kelly s record during the loss to Aquinas. I wanted to win the game, he said. That s all I ve thought about all year. These records would come in but I just wanted to win the game. The win-loss record is what matters. Sisson says he has been applying to colleges. Hobart, Alfred University, Washington & Jefferson, Bethany College (WV) and Allegany College (Pa.) have been recruiting him. I want in major in Architectural Engineering, he said. So, we ll see which schools have the program I want before I make any decisions. 31 Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! Be sure to LISTEN Saturday Morning from 10 to 11!! 32 CoverStory Friends in High Places Wilson and Mammoliti have connections that go way back By Mark Adair Depew coach Brian Wilson and Williamsville North coach Mike Mammoliti have been named the Coaches of the Year by the Football Weekly. Both coaches led their teams to improbable runs to a Section 6 title. Both coaches helped their teams end long winning streaks in Ralph Wilson Stadium. Both coaches have led their teams to the NYS semifinals after winning a Far West regional game in Rochester. Williamsville North beat Sweet Home at the Ralph to end the Panthers 69-game winning streak against WNY opponents. It was the school s first Section 6 title. Depew upended Alden at the Ralph to snap the Bulldogs streak of 39 wins against WNY teams. In addition, both Mammoliti and Wilson had teams that were left for dead after two weeks of the season. Williamsville North lost its first two games, including one to crosstown rival Williamsville South, to start the season 0-2. No one had the Spartans on any contenders list for anything other than a matchup game at the end of the season. Depew lost starting QB Anthony Buono when he suffered a broken collarbone in Week 2. The Wildcats lost 28-7 to defending champion Alden in Week 4 and then lost leading rusher, scorer and tackler Rodney Turner in Week 7... a 36-0 loss to arch-rival Lancaster. It s been a season of ups and downs, Wilson said. It was heartbreaking to lose Anthony Buono when we did. He s a tremendous kid and a tremendous competitor. We expected him to have a great season. Photo by Mark Adair Williamsville North coach Mike Mammoliti (left) and Depew coach Brian Wilson have been named Coaches of the Year after leading their teams to the MYS Semifinals. 32 Sophomore Dylan Sekuterski stepped in for Buono. Dylan stepped in and did a tremendous job, Wilson said. We dealt with a lot of different injuries. That stuff happens. We also had kids step up and play well. Mammoliti says that when his team started 0-2, he was frustrated but did not panic. I thought we had our chances in both games, he said. We just made too many mistakes that cost us the games. The similarities between the teams are striking. And when you consider how far back the friendship between the coaches stretches, it gets eerie. Mammoliti and Wilson were teammates on the University at Buffalo Division III teams from 1979 until They were roommates while they were in college and stayed roommates for five years after graduating. We were college roommates and have been great friends ever since, Wilson said. I can t think of anybody better to share this with. But while Wilson is happy to share the award, Mammoliti is uncomfortable being named Coach of the Year. I never think about putting myself in the same category as Brian Wilson, Mammoliti said. People don t understand how good of a coach he is. He s a college level coach here in high school. The pair met after Wilson returned home from Bowling Green to attend UB. He went to Bowling Green to wrestle but he missed See Cover Story on page 33

CoverStory continued from page 32 football, Mammoliti said. We met during that first offseason that he was back. He asked me to come train at his parents house in Orchard Park. When Mammoliti arrived at the Wilson s home, a huge surprise was waiting for him. Brian grew up across the street from Ralph Wilson Stadium, Mammoliti said. They had a whole gym set up in the basement. The first time I went there to work out, I met Craig Wolfley of the Steelers, Ron Wolfley, who played with St. Louis, Jim Burt of the Giants and Larry Pfohl, who became the pro wrestler Lex Luger. Even in 1979, those were pretty big names in WNY. I didn t think I was in the right place, Mammoliti said. They were all great guys. I learned a lot of lessons down in that basement. Wilson and Mammoliti remained friends, despite a difference in living styles. We were like Oscar and Felix, Wilson said. Mike is a neat freak and I can be, well... not so neat. It worked out in my favor, though. He kept things picked up pretty nice. Mammoliti admits that he was a bit more ordered. I was a bit uptight, he said, but Brian s college wardrobe consisted of whatever sweat pants he picked up off the floor that morning. The coaches bring their teams together every summer to participate in the Be The Best Camp at Depew High School. They remain in contact year round and have been following each other throughout these playoffs. Since this was Mammoliti s first trip to the Ralph, he asked Wilson for advice on how to handle things. I was torn, Wilson said. Mike is a great friend of mine but my son was playing for Sweet Home. He sent me a text asking Any advice. I sent one back that said, Just win baby. He laughed about it. Mammoliti says he was expecting a little more. All those years we ve been friends and that s the advice I get? the Spartans coached asked. The pair have continued to text throughout the state playoffs. After beating Eastridge on Friday night, Mammoliti sent Wilson a text that read, Now it s your turn. When Depew followed up with a win on Saturday, Wilson sent one back that read simply, Joining you in Rochester next week. And so, as the two friends get ready to play a NYS semifinal game with a trip to the Carrier Dome on the line, they have practiced together at Depew High School. Brian s got the turf there, Mammoliti said, so we have been going over a couple of days a week to practice with them. There has been no talk of rooming together again... however... Maybe we can be roommates again in Rochester, Mammoliti said with a laugh. Hopefully, we can room in Syracuse in a couple of weeks. Update: Williamsville North will play in the NYS title game in the Carrier Dome. Depew lost to Maine-Endwell. 33 For the promotion of amateur football in WNY! 63 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?
