4 Buffalo Bills & NY National Guard Coach of the Week Fatta Honored for B North title Cheektowaga coach Mike Fatta was named the Buffalo Bills / NY National Guard Coach of the Week after his Cheektowaga Warriors beat Burgard 12-8 last week. Cheektowaga won the B North Division championship with the win but it wasn t decided until the final seconds. With just :34 to play, Burgard, which entered the game 5-0, led 8-6 and was looking to claim the B North title. The Warriors defense forced Burgard to punt. Preston Summers fielded the punt at his own 30, and then found a hole and raced down the sideline into the end zone for the game-winning TD. We told our kids that we needed a good enough return so we could reach the end zone with a Hail Mary pass, Fatta said. Preston split two guys and started running down the sidelines. I thought we would be able to get a throw into the end zone. Then, he just kept going. The wild scene unfolded in front of several former Cheektowaga players as the Warriors clinched their second straight division championship. It was really neat, Fatta said. It was our Alumni Game so all the older guys were there. It was a really cool atmosphere. Fatta said that approximately 40 former players returned for the game, including Ron Moretuzzo, the captain of the 1955 Pine Hill team, which was the area s high school before Cheektowaga Central even existed. He came to the team dinner and talked to the kids, Fatta said. We got him a Pine Hill jersey to wear at the game. Moretuzzo, 78 years old, was at midfield for the game and called the coin toss, which he won. As he came off the field he looked at Fatta and said, I did my job, coach. The defenses dominated the game as each team struggled to muster any offense at all. Both teams were only able to record 130 yards of total offense. We knew going in that Burgard s defense is very good, Fatta said. They have a great defensive line. 4 When you play them, there is a lot that you just aren t able to do because they can stop with you with all four guys up front. Cheektowaga s defense matched Burgard as the teams played to a 0-0 tie at the half. Our kids are real disciplined, Fatta said. We worked all week on where to be in the right spot. They were disciplined all day and trusted each other to not do too much. They did a great job. The Warriors took a 6-0 lead in the 3rd quarter. They started at midfield and finished the drive when Marshawn Gibson ran 14 yards for a TD. We were finally able to sustain a drive, Fatta said. Up until then, we just weren t able to go anywhere. Burgard took the lead in the 4th quarter when they got a short field to work with. The Warriors were forced to punt out of their own end zone and the Bulldogs took possession at the 35-yard line. A few plays later, Burgard QB Photo by Buffalo Bills Cheektowaga coach Mike Fatta was named the Coach of the Week by the Buffalo Bills and the NY National Guard after his Warriors won the B North Division title with a 12-8 win over Burgard. Rayshawn Jones scored on a 20- yard run. A 2-point PAT gave Burgard an 8-6 lead. The defenses then tightened up again until Summers miraculous punt return. Fatta thought his team would be good this season. We were very young last year and we fell apart at the end, he said. We have 16 seniors this year and they really wanted to make up for the way the season ended. The chemistry on this team is 180 degrees from what it was last year. Fatta is a second-year head coach but has been with the Cheektowaga program for 14 seasons. He worked as an assistant coach under Scott Zipp for 10 seasons. After one year away from the program, Zipp is now on staff as Fatta s offensive coordinator. Fatta played for Cheektowaga and graduated in He was named a 2nd-team All-WNY linebacker his senior year and then played football for four seasons at Canisius College.

5 Western New York Milt R E P O R T By Milt Latimer The Biggest Little Rivalry in WNY Saturday, 2:00 pm, Cleve Hill The last week of the regular-season schedule is usually reserved for Rivalry games and WNY has a nice collection of such games. Some are old, like Fredonia-Dunkirk (120 years) or Albion- Medina (started in 1893). Some are crosstown battles that bring the whole community out (Lancaster-Depew, Tonawanda- North Tonawanda, Kenmore East vs Kenmore West and West Seneca East vs. West Seneca West). There is one rivalry that doesn t get as much high-profile press, but it doesn t change the fact that both schools circle the date on their calendars... Cleve Hill vs John F. Kennedy. Both schools are located in Cheektowaga. Both schools are about the same size and play in the same division for most sports. Neither school has lights, so their games are always on Saturday afternoon. Both even have a Presidential reference, as one school notes former Buffalo Mayor and President Grover Cleveland, while the other was the first school in the nation to name its school after a sitting President in JFK alumni always point to their magical 1975 season, Last year s Cleve Hill-JFK game was a classic in the series. when the Bears went 8-0 and finished the season ranked #2 in New York State. That team still holds many school records... Most Points scored (327), Least Points Allowed (27), while RB Chuck Goettle has team records for TDs (24) and Rushing (1,363). Another JFK great was Rayshawn Bolden, who still holds the WNY record for Receiving Yards in a Game with 304 vs Springville in Cleveland Hill also has a proud program. Since 2000, the Golden Eagles have been in 5 Section VI title games. RB Eric Everett ran for 2,195 yards in 2000, one of a handful in WNY history to eclipse the 2,000-yard mark. Notable alumni include Carl Kuras, who founded the Trench Trophy, recognizing WNY s Top Lineman each year, and Sal Capaccio, WGR radio host who played on the 1989 Cleve Hill team that beat Salamanca at Rich Stadium. Last year saw one the most exciting games in the series between the schools, Cleve Hill raced out to a lead before JFK scored 2 late TDs. After the second TD pulled JFK within 28-27, the Bears opted to go for a 2-point conversion. QB Nick Anderson scrambled into the corner of the end zone for a win and ultimately won the division title on a tie break. However, Cleve Hill would rebound from the loss and go on to win the Class C title at The Ralph. 5 For the promotion of amateur football in WNY! 7 A Summers Day for Warriors By Mark Adair Things looked bleak for Cheektowaga. The Warriors trailed Burgard 8-6 with just :34 left in the game and it looked like the Bulldogs would walk away with the B North title. Both teams had entered the game with 4-0 records in league games and a reputation for fierce defense. The offenses had struggled to muster any sort of an attack all day long. Each team only had about 130 yards of offense, Fatta said. We knew going in that their defense was very good. Burgard has a great defensive line. When you play them there is a lot that you just aren t able to do because they can stop with you with those four guys. Finally, Cheektowaga forced Burgard to punt with :34 left. Fatta was hoping for a miracle. I was just hoping that we could get a good enough punt return so we could at least reach the end zone with a pass, he said. Even with a pass, the Warriors would have been hoping for something to go right. We re not a passing team, Fatta said. I think we completed one pass all day. It was on a 4th-and-11 but we missed a field goal on that drive. The Warriors run the ball almost exclusively and their quarterbacks are seen as running options. We run the Triple Option, a little Veer and some Wishbone, Fatta said. It s mostly read option plays. It s all predicated on reading a lineman or a linebacker. The quarterback has to see what the defense gives you and then we take what they give you. Preston Summers fielded the punt at his own 30 and head up the middle. He suddenly veered towards the sideline. He split two guys and then headed to the sideline, Fatta said. When he got to midfield all of a sudden everything opened up for him. When he got to the 30, I was thinking that we could at least reach the end zone with a Hail Mary pass. But he just kept going. Summers outran the coverage team and went into the end zone to give Cheektowaga a 12-8 lead with just :20 left in the Preston Summers returned a punt 70 yards for a TD with just :20 left in the game to help Cheektowaga beat Burgard 12-8 last weekend. 7 Photo by Mark Adair game. The play set off a wild celebration on the Cheektowaga sideline. After a kickoff and two plays, Cheektowaga was B North champions. That s his first touchdown as a punt returner, Fatta said. We work a lot on punt and punt returns. As far as special teams go, we think those are the most important plays. Fatta actually designs a different punt return each week, depending on how that week s opponent lines up. There is such a big difference from one week to another, Fatta said. Some teams go with a 4 or 5 receivers on their punt formation. Some go with a double tight end. The Warriors, whose only loss this season was to a Class A school in the Carrier Dome for the Kickoff Classic, will be the #1-seed from the B North. Summers is a 2-year starter for the Warriors. The senior (5-6, 140) is a serious weapon who is asked to fill a lot of roles. He is one of our best athletes, Fatta said. He is our best ball carrier and on any other team he is a running back. We put him out in the slot because he can catch the ball. Summers presence at wide receiver forces opposing defenses to pay attention to him. He s a big reason that we run the ball so well, Fatta said. Other teams have to cover him and respect him or you are giving us easy throws. Because of that, some other guys get more carries and he doesn t care. If he wasn t such an unselfish player, our offense would not work. Summers is second on the Warriors in rushing but leads the team with 12 TDs. Marshawn Gibson leads Cheektowaga with 827 rushing yards. Marshawn has the majority of the carries and the yards, Fatta said, but Preston gets the points. He s fast enough to play Division III football after high school. He s small but he can play. Fatta says that Summers is an enjoyable player to have on the team. He is a phenomenal kid, Fatta said. He s always smiling and good to have around. He s an easy kid to root for.

All of our problems stem from mistakes in execution or even awareness, Lockport coach Greg Bronson said. Ken West scored two touchdowns on long passes where we just completely didn t cover kids. Right before the half, the Lions hit a 70-yard pass play, giving them the ball on the West 10-yard line. We lost a fumble on the next play, Bronson said. We also had a 1st-and-goal on the one and we had a procedure penalty before we even snapped the ball. This kind of stuff has happened three weeks in a row now. As a result, Lockport now faces a must-win game against West Seneca West. If we win, we ll get the 7th seed, Bronson said. But until we focus enough to eliminate mistakes, we ll lose games we are perfectly capable of winning. If the Lions are going to make the playoffs, they will need to get more big performances from Marshall Taylor. The senior made 7 tackles, including 4 QB sacks in the loss to Ken West. Marshall is a very hard worker, Bronson said. He is in the weight room all year long. Taylor is a 3- year starter at DE. He was also the Section 6 champion in the 215-pound weight class for the wrestling team. He s one of the strongest players we have ever had here, Bronson said. Taylor is a fierce competitor. If people look at scores they might think we didn t play well, Grand Island coach Dean Santorio said. But scores don t mean a whole lot. At the varsity level, any team can beat you. After losing an emotional, hardhitting game to Sweet Home the week before, the Vikings struggled to focus again. We found a way to win the game, Santorio said. The kids did the job. Grand Island will enter the playoffs as the 5th- or 6th-seeded team in Class A, despite having a solid 5-1 record. There still could be some movement with the seedings, Santorio said. The goal is always to finish in the top four and get a home game but our point differential wasn t good enough. The Vikings will close the regular season with a non-league game against Williamsville North. North has a good ball club, Santorio said. It s a chance to play a quality team right before the playoffs. If Grand Island is going to make a deep run in the post-season, they will be relying on Tom Doctor to anchor the lines. He has really good size, Santorio said, and he s an athlete. He s been fantastic on both sides of the ball. Doctor (6-3, 240) is a team captain. He s a hard worker and a smart kid, Santorio said. Wilson allowed his players to meet without the coaching staff before taking the field. The seniors had a little meeting, he said. They knew we had to come out play McKinley football. There were two quarters left and we just had to let everything go and play football. After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Mike Denton and Jeremy Kelley each scored a TD to give McKinley a lead. Our defense got some 3-and-outs, Wilson said. Our defense really stepped it up when we needed them too. McKinley will finish the regular season with a non-league game at Sweet Home this weekend. The win clinched second place in the C North Division and ensured that the Tigers will play a first-round game at home for the playoffs. It s been a while since we ve had a home game in the sectionals, coach Mike Dean said. I think the last time Akron played a home playoff game was in Dean said his players knew fully that a victory in Lackawanna would mean getting a home game. They did know, Dean said. It s something we wanted before the season started. It was definitely a fun ride home. All those hurts and aches don t mean anything on the ride home when you win. The Tigers finished 2012 with a 6-3 record and may be the best team in WNY history to not qualify for the playoffs. Even though we had a very good team, Dean said, we didn t make the playoffs. That s motivated us all year. The kids weren t going to miss out again. Senior CJay Longwell played a big role in the Tigers win. He intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble on defense. Longwell (6-1, 175) entered the summer as the Tigers starting QB. He was the back-up last year, Dean said. We all thought he would be the starter this year. But Brenden Weierheiser came up from the JV team and won the job. CJay made it a point to help him out, Dean said. Photo by Mark Adair Akron senior CJay Longwell. We moved to WR and he s played really well there. Weierheiser was injured in the 3rd quarter at Lackawanna and Longwell stepped back in at QB. He completed 3 of 4 passes for 70 yards, including a crucial 27-yard TD pass. That was right in the middle of their comeback, Dean said. CJay has been huge for us all year and he did it again. 14 Michael Road West Seneca, NY (716)

The Warriors locked up the 2nd-seed in Class C South and will host a first-round playoff game. We ll focus on getting a few guys healthy this week, Salamanca coach jason marsh said. We want to get our back-ups more playing time and we everyone back to 100 percent before the playoffs. This is the first season back on the sidelines for Marsh after he stepped away from the head varsity job last year. It was nice having the year away from being the head guy, he said. It helped me rejuvanate a bit. I am really enjoying this year. We have a great bunch of kids and were having a lot of fun. Marsh said that the Salamanca football program is as strong as it s ever been. The last three years have been pretty exciting for us, he said. People in town are excited and it s kind of how a lot of people used to remember it. One player who has had a solid season is Joe Hinman. The senior WR caught a 4-yard TD pass in the win over Allegany-Limestone. He s scored a touchdown the last two weeks, Marsh said. Hinman (5-10, 170) also broke Salamanca s alltime receiving record earlier this year. The record of 614 yards was set by Ellicottville s new head coach Chad Bartoszek in 1997 and Himman now has 684 receiving yards in his career. Photo by Tim Frank Salamanca senior Joe Hinman. 22 CoverStory By Mark Adair Cardiac Kids Alden Bulldogs making last-minute wins a habit For the fourth time in six games Alden fashioned a thrilling, lastminute victory when the Bulldogs beat Olean last weekend. Alden trailed 20-0 at the half and was looking at their 41-game winning streak against WNY opponents going up in flames. We just couldn t click offensively, Alden coach Rob Currin said. Olean s defense was playing extremely well and we just couldn t do anything. We dropped passed, we missed blocks, we had blown coverages. At the break, Currin addressed his players. Olean was doing everything we expected, he said. We just were getting out-played. Character is not revealed when things go well, but when there is adversity. He gave his players a choice. We told them that they could continue getting smacked in the mouth, he said, or they Photo by Tim Frank Alden QB Brian Stoldt led the Bulldogs to a comeback win over Olean last weekend. Alden clinched the B South Division championship with the victory. could go down swinging. Every kid came out and turned it into a fight. On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, QB Brian Stoldt hit Austin Hopcia with a 74-yard TD pass. That gave us a spark, Currin said. Our kids started playing outstanding defense. We ended up with 8 sacks. The offense, however, still couldn t get out of it s own way. Eventually, the Bulldogs trailed 20-6 with just 4:34 left in the game. Apparently, Alden had the Huskies right where they wanted them. I can t say that there was one certain thing that happened, Currin said. There was no magical moment. It was just the result of a group of people that have faith in 22 each other. Alden got a break when they turned a broken play in a TD. Stoldt tossed a pass to Tom Wideman who fought his way into the end zone to complete a 10-yard scoring play. Alden had closed to within The coaches, the players, everyone believes in each other, Currin said. That mentality helps to make a 20-point deficit manageable. Alden then stopped the Olean offense and forced a punt. With the clock ticking away, the offense produced a frantic drive and Lyle Grant scored on a 20-yard run up the middle. Alden still trailed We decided to go for two, Currin said. I figured we had all the momentum so we wanted to try and get the lead right then. Stoldt ran into the end zone and Alden finally led but it still wasn t over. The Huskies started their own frantic drive to get into position to try a game-winning field goal. Olean had actually reached inside the Alden 20-yard line but Lyle Grant stepped in front of a pass and took the interception 85 yards for a touchdown. Another 2-point conversion sealed the game with 1:05 left. Three touchdowns, a pair of 2-point conversions in 3 minutes, 29 seconds of playing time. Our kids were amazing, Currin said. What an effort on their part. It s been our story all year. Alden is now 6-0 but this season has been anything but easy. Games against Eden, Hutch Tech, Pioneer and See Cover Story on page 23

23 CoverStory continued from page 22 now Olean have come down to the final minute. In three of those games, Alden trailed and needed to score to keep their streak alive. Only against Pioneer did the Bulldogs have a lead going into the final minute. This has shown us that this team has thrived in the face of adversity, Currin said. These kids do not pack it in. They use their full 48 minutes and this is really something to be proud of. Dylan Dussault finished with 5 of the Bulldogs 8 sacks. Stoldt completed 13 of 23 passes for 207 yards and 2 TDs. Stoldt has also proven himself to be more tham cool in desperate situations. He has engineered three game-winning drives in the final minutes this season. There is no stat for come-from-behind wins, Currin said. Brian has the mind of a coordinator and the body of an athlete. His week of preparation for each game is as intense as any of our coaches. Currin says that Stoldt works incredibly hard to make sure his team is ready by game time. He will watch film all weekend, Currin said. On Monday, we talk about what he s seen in homeroom. If he has a break during the school day, he ll make sure everything is done academically and then he will be with me watching film. But, Stoldt s studying is not confined to the school day. Every Monday or Tuesday night, he hosts a team film session at his house, Currin said. He ll have the offensive line or the running backs meet at his house to watch more film. The kid watches as much film as the coaches do. All throughout the week, the senior QB will give input to Currin on possible tweaks and changes to the offense. The coaches decide what we like, Currin said, and then I ll meet with Brian. He has a lot of liberty to talk to me about what he likes or doesn t like. Currin has full faith that what his QB thinks is as important - and maybe even more important - than what the coaches think. His greatest strength is his football mind, Currin said. It s not normal. This is my first year as a head coach and to not utilize his brain would be incredibly stupid. Stoldt said that the Bulldogs actually benefitted from the coaching change when legendary Dick Diminuco retired and Currin took over. With all the changes in our program, there were a lot of spots still open, he said. A lot of young kids had a chance to move up and get starting jobs. As that happened through the summer, guys got that sense of battling and to keep fighting. That is really is starting to carry over to the season. All that battling we did in the summer has paid off. Stoldt (5-11, 185) has an academic average of 94 and is ranked 30th in his class of 159 students. He will play college football but is undecided about a major. I d like to major in Psychology and Sports Studies, he said. One day, I want to be a college coach. I want to go as far as I can with it. I love the game so much and that s a challenge I really look forward to. 23 Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! Be sure to LISTEN Saturday Morning from 10 to 11!! We were pretty good in Week 1 and again in Week 2. We were beating Jamestown with 4 minutes to go in the third quarter. We are the only team to give Jamestown a tussle this year. If Kenmore West is going to advance in the playoffs, they will need a few big performances from QB Adam Fron. He spent a lot of time in the offseason preparing himself, Harris said. He has played really well because of the work he put in during the off-season. Fron, a team captain, is an outstanding student who will graduate from West s International Baccalaureate Program. Getting an IB Diploma is even more advanced than taking all the AP courses, Harris said. Top colleges will take a look at that. I think Adam wants to play at Cornell. Fron has passed for yards and 6 TDs this season. He has a of QB Rating. Adam has been fantastic this year, Harris said. I couldn t ask for anything more from a quarterback. Before the playoffs start, Kenmore West will play their crosstown rival Kenmore East in the annual regularseason finale. This game is exciting, Harris said. 53 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?
