4 Buffalo Bills & NY National Guard Coach of the Week Kraig Kurzanski Honored for Win Williamsville South coach Kraig Kurzanski was named the Buffalo Bills-National Guard Coach of the Week after his team beat North Tonawanda last weekend. That was a good win, Kurzanski said. I m feeling real confident about our team. We have a lot of good players and they are excited and focused. The Billies improved to 4-0 with the win as they head into their annual Yom Kippur game that will be played this Thursday evening against crosstown rival Williamsville East. The East game is a big thing in our community, Kurzanski said. It s the closest thing to a rivalry that we have. All the kids grow up together and they all know each other. Kurzanski said that playing on Thursday makes the week difficult. We have to be careful that we don t wear our kids out, he said. It limits what we can put in that week. It can be difficult. In the win over North Tonawanda, the Billies jumped out to an early 14-0 lead. We started out pretty good, Kurzanski said, but NT is a pretty good program and they fought back. The Lumberjacks had scored to pull within But South s Matt Foster returned the kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and a 21-7 lead. We never really looked back after that, Kurzanski said. They worked hard to score and cut into our lead and within 13 seconds we scored again. It s like a punch in the belly when that happens. It s pretty huge. Williamsville South had won their previous three games by a total of 13 points - something that critics had pointed to as a sign that the Billies weren t that good. We had opportunities to score but didn t, Kurzanski said. We sold our kids that we needed to 4 finish games. This time they did. In addition to enjoying his team s 4-0 start, Kurzanski is also overcoming a scare. On Labor Day, just 4 days before the season started, he was admitted to the hospital with a heart ailment. I was in the hospital for three days, Kurzanski said. I m blessed to have great assistant coaches and they really stepped up that week. Defensive coordinator Brian Swatland assumed the role of head coach while Kurzanski was in the hospital. Offensive coordinator Tom Woodruff and Line Coach Kevin Lester also assumed part of Kurzanski s normal duties. I think one of the most under appreciated people in high school sports are the assistant coaches, Kurzanski said. I am fortunate to have good ones. The Billies preparation for the season opener did not seem to be affected. Photo by Buffalo Bills Williamsville South coach Kraig Kurzanski was named the Coach of the Week by the Buffalo Bills and the National Guard. Kurzanski led his Billies to a win over North Tonawanda last week. Our kids were very good, Kurzanski said. They understand that I m just one of the coaches, not the whole program. Kurzanski s players stayed in contact with him throughout the week. They called and texted me, he said. That meant a lot to me. Kurzanski rejoined his team on Thursday. I got out of the hospital and my wife took me to practice, Kurzanski said. The kids were waiting for me. The doctor says that I am allowed to coach so that s what I m going to do. Kurzanski says he will have to change a few things in order to continue coaching. I have to change my eating and stay off of caffeine, he said. But, other than that, we re back and we are working on winning the next game.

6 Cheektowaga faces tough two weeks Cheektowaga improved to 3-1 with a win over Amherst last week. The Warriors led in the third quarter before pulling away. The meat of our schedule is in front of us, coach Mike Fatta said. We ve won our first two league games, so we like what we are doing so far. We are just trying to improve our own team because the next two weeks will dictate our season. Cheektowaga is 2-0 in B Central games and has two crucial contests coming up. The Warriors will play at Depew this Friday before playing Alden at home. Depew is the defending champions in Class B, Fatta said, and we know Alden is a good team. We re trying to make the playoffs so these next two weeks are pretty big. Fatta says that his team has been inconsistent this season. We have a Photo by Nick Loverde Cheektowaga senior Robert Wilson #56. young team this year, he said. We have just one returning starter from last year on defense. Getting the kids to play consistently for four quarters of football has been a challenge. If the Warriors are going to emerge as the best team in the B Central Division, they will be relying on senior center Robert Wilson to lead the offense. He s an intense kid who never takes a play off, Fatta said. He plays at a high level and is physically dominant. Wilson, a 3-year starter at center, is a team captain. He s our true captain, the team leader, Fatta said. Most of the time, the spotlight gets shown on all the offensive weapons we have. But he is a dominant center and definitely one of the team leaders. Wilson (6-0, 215) has an academic average in the high 90s. We do a lot of zone blocking and he understands it, Fatta said. He s an intelligent kid. Wilson also plays baseball at Cheektowaga. He s a driven kid, Fatta said. He s a very good athlete and he does great with his academics. He s pretty fiery out on the field and he s definitely the leader of our group. For the promotion of amateur football in WNY! While South Park Photo by Mark Adair lost 34-12, they trailed just entering the final quarter. We turned the ball over seven times that night, Delaney said. You re not going to beat anyone doing that. Delaney scheduled the game against St. Francis simply to get his team ready for the tougher competition they will face in the post-season. We are trying to play against good football programs, Delaney said. Whether it s a private or public school doesn t mater to us. We think playing a team like St. Francis will help us when it comes to the post-season. Delaney did a similar thing a year ago when he scheduled a game against Jamestown, the eventual Class AA champions. We want to be known as one of the top programs in the area, he said. If you re going to do that, you have to play against other top programs. While the Sparks have a reputation as a high-flying offensive scoring machine, Delaney says his team hasn t actually played that well on offense. We are slowly coming along, he said. We re getting better each week. I think that once we find a rhythm on offense, we will be tough on that side of the ball, too. South Park QB Tyree Brown rushed for over 100 yards in the Sparks 14-7 win over West Seneca East last week. 9 the starter this year. Delaney says he needs a play-maker at the QB spot. His athletic ability is outstanding, he said. He can throw the football but his running ability gives us an extra dimension at quarterback. He is a phenomenal athlete and has a chance to be an exceptional player. Brown was timed at 4.55 in the 40-yard dash at the University at Buffalo s football camp this past summer. He s pretty quick, Delaney said. And he s an excellent runner. He rushed for over 100 yards against West Seneca East. Brown (5-9, 170) is not a powerful bruising runner. He s not a scrawny kid, Delaney said, but we have other kids who can pound the ball inside. Brown injured his ankle in the loss to St. Francis. He couldn t run that night, Delaney said. We want him to carry the ball on a third of the carries. It really changed what we were trying to do that day. He s back to 100 percent now. Delaney s past two QBs, Maurice Howie and Tyler Mascio, were Connolly Cup finalists. We ve been lucky to have a kid that can play the QB position the last few years, Delaney said. Tyree is still maturing in the offense and will do nothing but get better. As he continues to get better, we ll continue to get better.

While the rivalry is still new - this was just the 7th game between the teams - it is quickly growing in both communities. Our booster club made $700 at the snack bar for the JV game that morning, Lockport coach Greg Bronson said. It was a big crowd. And the varsity game over at Starpoint was pretty full, too. The close proximity of the districts makes a rivalry game a natural for Bronson. A lot of our kids play with their kids in Little Loop football, he said. Our kids know each other from way back. Lockport is now 2-2 on the season, 1-1 in AA North Division games. The Lions lost 5 turnovers in their loss to Lancaster and 4 more in their loss to Kenmore West. We have been in position in both losses, Bronson said. If we don t turn the ball over, we have been in the games. The Lions trailed at halftime of the win over Starpoint. It was quite entertaining for everyone who was there, Bronson said, but it was a little hair-raising for the coaches. Lockport junior Khalil James rushed for 205 yards and 4 TDs in the win. This is his first year of high school football, Bronson said. He didn t play JV or modified. We were hoping he would be a good back-up this season because he wasn t real familiar with our system. We just kept telling them that we have to go win the next play and turn the momentum back our way. St. Joe s trailed with less than 3 minutes to play as St. Francis was trying to run out the clock. Matt Jeffries caused a fumble with a QB sack and Josh Jackson scooped up the ball and ran 66 yards for the game-winning TD. We talked about being resilient, Gilbert said. 24 CoverStory By Mark Adair The Gold Crush LB Brad Zaffram leads a suffocating defense at Canisius Canisius beat Jamestown in the one of Western New York s most highly anticipated games in many years last weekend. Canisius had entered the game ranked #1 in New York State in Class AA while Jamestown came in ranked #3. Additionally, Canisius was ranked 48th in the nation by the USAToday. It was just an electric atmosphere, Canisius coach Rich Robbins said. It was really a stateplayoff setting with two great programs going at it. It was great for high school football. The Friday Night Lights added to the excitement for Robbins and his players. We mostly play Saturday afternoon games, he said. Anytime we get an opportunity to play on Friday night under the lights, it s exciting. Most estimates put the attendance at slightly more than 6,000 for the Photo by Tim Frank Canisius senior Brad Zaffram is leading the Crusaders defense this season. Zaffram and Canisius will play arch-rival St. Joe s this weekend. game - a figure that Robbins says is pretty close. I d say that s about right, he said. It s a small town and the stadium was just packed. It s a lot of fun to play in an atmosphere like that. However, while this was exciting, it s nothing new for the Crusaders. It seems that every week this season has been a big deal. In Week 3, Canisius traveled to the Cleveland area to play Catholic-school powerhouse Walsh Jesuit. There were 3 or 4 thousand people there that night, Robbins said. They had close to 90 players. They had a 200-piece band at halftime. They had a big scoreboard. It was really Friday night Ohio football. And the week before that, Canisius hosted Aquinas - a 24 team that entered the game as the defending NYS Class AA champions and ranked 48th in the nation. There were a couple thousand people at that game, too, Robbins said. So, every week we have something that everyone gets excited about. And, to top of the run of thrilling settings, here comes the Crusaders annual game against arch-rival St. Joe s. A game that attracts the biggest crowd of the season in Western New York every year. It s going to be exiting again, Robbins said. I guess this is how high school football should be for everyone. While the annual rivalry game is always anticipated, most area fans feel Canisius has a much stronger team than St. Joe s this season. If people are expecting a slaughter, they don t know what this rivalry means, Robbins said. They don t understand how hard St. Joe s is going to play. This game means everything to both programs. And we have to go to their house and play against a really good football team. Robbins says that now, in the middle of Joe s Week, is no time to sit back and reflect on where his program sits. Simply put, 10 years ago no one would have ever thought that Canisius would ever have a chance at cracking the national rankings in the USAToday. I think we got too wrapped up in all that stuff last year, Robbins said. Our focus has been on practicing like a champion each day and playing like a champion every week. If we do that, those big-time goals will be out See Cover Story on page 25

25 CoverStory continued from page 24 there at the end of the season. Robbins did admit to having one fleeting moment of satisfaction earlier this year. When his team took a 40-7 lead at halftime against Walsh Jesuit, he does admit to feeling a sense of pride. In 2010, we lost to Walsh Jesuit 58-0 on our home field, he said. Watching our kids dominate the way they did, I realized how far we had come as a program. We think we can compete with anybody now. The Canisius defense has been suffocating, crushing opponents on a weekly basis. In fact, it s news when the starters give up a TD, which they have done twice this fall. Aquinas was shut out. Walsh Jesuit scored one TD. Jamestown scored on an 80-yard pass play and returned a fumble for another TD. Our defense has played pretty well, Robbins said. And in the middle of the Canisius defense is senior LB Brad Zaffram, a player that Robbins calls the best linebacker in New York State. If you watch the film, he said, he s absolutely the best linebacker in the state. Zaffram (6-2, 225) is leading the Crusaders in tackles. He has also scored 2 TDs from the fullback position. He makes 15 tackles, deflects passes, sacks the quarterback, and then goes and plays offense, too, Robbins said. We ve had some pretty fantastic linebackers over the years and Brad is the best of all of them. Zaffram transferred into Canisius after playing his sophomore season at Sweet Home. People saw how hard he hit back then, Robbins said. Everyone knew he was going to be a great player. When Zaffram enrolled at Canisius, the move caused a few hard feelings. Charges of recruiting once again hit one of the area s private schools. However, Zaffram s mother says the move was necessary for her son... and not the football player. Our decision had nothing to do with football, Carol Zaffram said. Everyone said he was recruited or that we got scholarships. None of that is true. He was going down the wrong path. I needed to do what was best for his future. That was the only thing that entered into it. And, while the decision was agonizing at the time, it seems to have worked out well. Brad Zaffram just scored a 1240 on his SAT and will soon receive offers to get a free college education. And while it took a while to make the transition, Zaffram says he feels at home at Canisius - and in the middle of the Crusaders defense. I got fully used to it after last season, Brad Zaffram said. This year I feel like I m at home. I still try to go to as many of the Sweet Home games as I can. Those guys are still my friends and I still hang out with them. For right now, however, Zaffram s thoughts are on one thing... St. Joe s. We re used to playing big games but this is our rival, Zaffram said. At our reunion, no one will ask how we did against Jamestown. They ll ask if we beat St. Joe s. 25 Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! Be sure to LISTEN Saturday Morning from 10 to 11!! 56 Alfred University dropped a tough decision to Ithaca 17-6 last weekend. The Saxons led 6-0 at the half but Ithaca rallied for 10 points in the third quarter to take the lead. Alfred (3-1, 1-1 Empire 8) opened the scoring on its second drive of the opening quarter, driving 89 yards on 13 plays after stopping Ithaca on a fourth-and-one try at the AU 11. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Johnson connected with sophomore wide receiver Brendan Buisch for a six-yard TD pass to cap the 6:51 drive. The extra point missed and AU led 6-0 with 38 second left in the first quarter. We just didn t make plays in the second half and Ithaca did, Alfred coach Bob Rankl said. Alfred is now 1-1 in Empire 8 Conference games and will play Hartwick this weekend. We have a really good football team, Rankl said. It will be tough for anybody to make it through the Empire 8 unbeaten. If we win this week at Hartwick, we are right back in it in the Conference. Rankl says that his players are already focused on the next game. It s another work week during the season, Rankl said. Hartwick is a good football team. We ll go there with the expectation of having a dogfight into the 4th quarter. Alfred is scoring almost 26 points per game. The Saxons also averages 387 yards of offense per game (237 passing; 150 rushing). Sophomore quarterback Tyler Johnson leads the team in rushing with 396 yards (99 per game) with one touchdown. Johnson has passed for 872 yards, with 10 touchdowns. One of the reasons that the Saxons offense has been successful is the play of starting right guard Dalton Maska. College Football Starpoint grad Leads Alfred He s a captain of our football team and he is a tremendous leader, Rankl said. He has a very good work ethic. Maska, who played high school football at Starpoint for coach Al Cavagnaro, entered Alfred ready to play college football. Dalton is a real good model for a lot of the players on our team, Rankl said. He s always doing the right thing. Rankl says that one of the most important attributes of a good college football player is self-motivation. Good players simply do not need coaches hounding them to make themselves better. It s definitely important at the college level, Rankl said. It should be important at the high school level, too. If you are going to be a good football player you are going to be self-motivated. If guys come to us and they Photo by Alfred University Alfred senior Dalton Maska is a Starpoint grad. 56 are not in shape, they don t play for us. Rankl recruits the Western New York area and put extra effort into landing Maska for the Saxons. He looked really good on film, Rankl said, and he had very good grades in high school. When he came to Alfred as a freshman he had the mentality that he was ready to play right away. Even so, it s rare for a freshman to make the varsity roster for any team in the Empire 8. He showed up for camp and he started competing, Rankl said. He wasn t shy in camp. We knew we had someone who was going to play ball for us, no doubt. And he did play a little for us that year. Maska is now a 3-year starter at guard for the Saxons. And he has no grown into a team leader, validated by the fact that his teammates elected him captain during the off-season. He s a fiery guy on the field, Rankl said. He s a vocal leader for us. He does a great job as a captain.

It is just the second time in school history that the Pioneers have won their first four games. We had 3,000 people there on Saturday night, coach Blaise Faggiano said. I ve been on 4 radio shows this week. This town very much supports the college sports and everyone wants to be part of it. Faggiano said that his players are getting caught up in the excitement, too. The kids have worked hard to get to this point, he said. We have a lot of football left to play. But we feel good where we are at right now. We ve never been to the post-season and that s what we want. A shot at the NCAA playoffs. Utica will now play at Ithaca, where Faggiano was a star when he played college football. It s special to go back there but that s personal, he said. It will be more special if we can win the game. Faggiano says he has not mentioned once that he played at Ithaca to his players. The only way our kids know I went to Ithaca is because they look on the internet, he said. Because it won t College Football Depew grad coaching at Utica Ryan Wilson come from me. Our preparation this week is no different than last week. Faggiano has been helped this season by yet another assistant coach with Buffalo roots. Defensive coordinator Will Pluff is a graduate of Kenmore West. This past summer, Faggiano hired Ryan Wilson as a graduate assistant coach. Wilson played at Depew high school and later played at Edinboro. You can tell he is a coach s son, Faggiano said. He s has a lot of knowledge about the game and he works hard at it. Wilson played on a state champion team when he was at Sweet Home. He was originally hired to coach the linebackers at Utica. All summer he prepared to coach linebackers, Faggiano said. All of a sudden, we had a staff change and he had to coach running backs. He just made the change and he really is doing a nice job with it. Faggiano says he will continue to keep strong ties to Western New York with his coaching staff. I m from Rochester and we have 2 guys from Buffalo on staff, Faggiano said. Western New York is a huge area to recruit for us. There are a lot of good players in Western New York and we want to recruit as many as we can. It can only help when we have guys that can go home to recruit there. 59 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?
