Marsh says that this week will be harder for his coaching staff than getting ready for Southwestern was. We really have to focus on not having a letdown, he said. Some days there isnʼt a lot of difference, he said. You have to do a lot of motivating with each group. You have to be creative with them and do different things to motivate them to want to do well. He still talks often with Whitcher. We talk about Xs and Os a lot, Marsh said. We talk about different ways to motivate the kids. This week we talked about guarding against a letdown. Marsh says that he still uses the same stuff he learned from Whitcher when he was a player. Our terminology is the same, he said. We are still running a lot of the same defenses that we had when he was the coach. Some things we do differently but we havenʼt changed much.

5 Western New York 2011 N O T E B O O K Action Jackson Cheektowaga took control of the B West Division when they beat Tonawanda 43-6 last weekend. The Warriors are now 3-1 overall and 3-0 in division game. They are in first place will clinch the division with a win over Maryvale. Weʼre elated, coach Scott Zipp said. We have a good group of kids. Our athletes are superb. Our guys that play in the trenches are hardworking kids that work together. We have athletes all over the field that have the capability of scoring on any play. Cheektowaga has won three straight after losing the season-opener to Depew. We struggled against Depew in the second half, Zipp said. Depew is a great program and we ran out of gas. It gave us a reality check. We lost a game but Photo by Mark Adair Marquel Jackson. we gained a lot of insight about our team. Against Tonawanda, Marquel Jackson ran absolutely wild. He rushed for 201 yards and 3 TDs on just nine carries. He scored on runs of 36, 80 and 25 yards. He also had three long runs called by a penalty, Zipp said. Heʼs pretty much done that all season. In every game he has had a 50-plus-yard run. Heʼs the real deal. After four games Jackson has rushed for 626 yards and 7 TDs. The only full game he has played was against Depew, Zipp said. He didnʼt play in the second half of two games and he didnʼt play in the 4th quarter against Tonawanda. Zipp says that he is frustrated that Jackson has been unable to play more than one full game. Marquel is as good as any running back they talk about right now, he said. I want him to get the notice that he deserves but I refuse to leave him in a game and ring up 60 or 70 points on someone. I would love to leave him in to rush for 600 yards some night but we canʼt do that. Zipp said that Jackson should be mentioned when it comes to awards like the Connolly Cup. This kid is up there with the best of them, he said. His speed is off the chart. Jackson, a 6-0, 185-pound junior, has never been officially timed. When asked about his time in the 40-yard dash, Zipp had an answer. Fast, he said. He can move. Kids have angles on him and he runs right by them. For the promotion of amateur football in WNY! 6 Players of the Week Offense Justin Patterson - Alden Justin Patterson led Alden to a win over Albion last weekend as he rushed for a new school-record 310 yards on 25 carries. Patterson also ran for 3 TDs, scoring on runs of 70, 11 and 79 yards. Alden is now 4-0 and ranked 3rd in new York State Class B. Defense Ben Whitney - Jamestown Ben Whitney had a huge night as he made 12 tackles, recorded a QB sack and recovered a fumble in Jamestown s 40-7 win over West Seneca West. 7 Sweet Home s Mr. Reliable Sweet Home survived a stiff test when they beat Starpoint last weekend. The Panthers trailed 8-6 at the half and the teams were tied at after three quarters. Starpoint has definitely improved, Sweet Home coach John faller said. They won the Bowl Series in Class A last year and they are looking to get to the playoffs and make it to the next round. Sweet Home has survived three straight tense games and has 44 straight wins against Section 6 competition. Weʼve really been pushed to the limit, Faller said. The last three games have been tough. Faller says that the closeness of the games can help his team get ready for the playoffs. It helps when you win these games, he said. I donʼt think it helps when you have close games and lose. But we are 4-0 and we had to overcome adversity in each game. Faller said that his team still needed to improve. My kids have to realize that they have to be focused all the time, even in practice, he said. Our penalties are hurting us. We make a bad decision or donʼt use proper technique and are out of position. Itʼs got to start in practice and we need to carry it over to the games. In a game, you donʼt get a third chance to try something like you do in practice. Sweet Home QB Jordan Johnson is the Panthers marquee player. Johnson was a finalist for the Connolly Cup last season and has already given a verbal commitment to play at the University at Buffalo after graduating. And Johnson did not disappoint in the win over Starpoint. He completed 8 of 13 passes for 92 yards, including a 42-yard TD pass. He also rushed for 70 yards and scored TDs on runs of 39 and 14 yards. But if the Panthers are going to win a fifth straight Section 6 championship, they will need contributions from elsewhere on the field. Senior running back Juwan Douglas, one of the Panthers four team captains, has been a solid player all season. In the win over Starpoint, Douglas rushed for 62 yards on 14 carries and caught 3 passes for 14 yards. If we had 20 kids like Juwan we would be a lot better off, Faller said. Heʼs quiet, heʼs hardworking and respectful. Heʼs a focused kid and he always gives 100 percent. Douglas also starts at LB for the Panthers. He started there last year too, Faller said, but we spell him on defense. Heʼs a full-time player on offense. Faller has known Douglas since he was a kindergarten student at Maplemere Elementary. He was the same way back then, Faller said. Even when he was a little kid, he was quiet and hard working. No matter what activity we did you could never get two words out of him. And, Faller said, it was Photo by Mark Adair Sweet Home senior running back Juwan Douglas rushed for 62 yards in the Panthersʼ win over Starpoint. Douglas is a team captain. always apparent that Douglas would be a very good player some day. He was always one of our better athletes, Faller said. Heʼs played Little League football since he was 6 or 7 years old. Heʼs been around the game a long time. He knows football, both offense and defense. Faller says that Douglas is a reliable player. You can count on him no matter what the situation, he said. He always brings his best to the game and gives you his best. Douglas (5-11, 180) has a chance to play football after high school. He has a future to play somewhere in college, Faller said. Thatʼs a tremendous accomplishment, to play in college and get your degree. Kids should try and play the best football they can but they should come out of there with a degree. - Mark Adair

If the Devils beat Lockport this weekend, they will clinch the AA North title. In 2010, Ken West finished in a 3-way tie with Williamsville North and Riverside. That s not what we wanted last year, Ken West coach Rich Harris said. We lost a heartbreaker to Riverside and it cost us. Harris said that his kids were disappointed with sharing the championship. How many years did we finish second to North Tonawanda, he said. Last year, we finally beat NT and then we have to split the title. Harris also said that he has not hidden the fact that this week s game will be for a division championship. We went over it in the team meetings this week, Harris said. Our kids know what s on the line. Martin Bailey rushed for 219 yards and 4 TDs in the win over Niagara Falls. He also returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a TD. Clarence improved to 4-0 on the season despite the fact that the game was played on a sloppy field due to the weather. It was difficult to get going, Clarence coach Mark Layer said. Early on, Lancaster did a great job defending the double wing. It s the kind of offense that can wear you down though. We did a nice job on the opening drive in the second half and our defense played outstanding. One of the many bright spots on the wet night was senior running back Nikolay Mohan, who is a key returner from last season s sectional championship team. His best asset is his speed, Layer said, and it was a little difficult getting his speed going. He hits the hole at 100 MPH and that gives him the ability to break it open. He is a strong kid with explosive speed. Clarence used the double wing for the majority of the game, so senior Mike Gelz carried most of the workload. The win improved the Steelers to 3-1 on the season as they moved into second place in the B West Division. Maryvale has a pretty solid football team, firstyear coach Adam Tardiff said. Their offense has been scoring a lot of points, and they were high scoring. We played well defensively. In the 4th quarter, Lackawanna executed a fake punt to keep a drive alive. Cameren Smith later scored on a 27 yard run to finish the drive. He added a 40 yard score to put the game out of reach. He plays well for a sophomore, Tardiff said. He scored some big TDs for us. He can play anywhere on the field; tailback, receiver and defensively he has had a pretty good nose for the ball. Smith intercepted three passes in the first half in the loss to Cheektowaga. If the name and number appears familiar, Smith is the younger brother of previous Lackawanna standouts Capone, and Christian. He has a pretty good pedigree, Tardiff said. The offense was just clicking early. JFK used a power running attack rushing the ball 43 times for 161 yards and 3 TDs. Senior RB Ryan Ball was a key contributor, rushing 18 times for 59 yards and a touchdown that gave the Bears a 14-0 lead. Ball is a four-year senior starter on the Bears defense, and is averaging eight tackles a contest. During the off-season, Ostempowski expanded Ball s role on the offensive side of the ball. He decided he wanted to do both and he has done well there, said Ostempkowski. He didn t have a big day statistically but he is one of our best leaders. If you have played for four years, you have seen a lot. Ostempkowski says that Ball is outstanding in the classroom. Photo by Mark Adair JFK senior Ryan Ball. With the win, the Warriors (3-1) moved into first place in the C South Division. The loss was Southwestern s first regular-season loss since 2007, and the first league loss since the Trojans moved down to Class C. It was defiantly a big night for our team, Salamanca coach jason marsh said. This is something the kids have had their sights on all year. We knew if were going to have a chance, this is a team we were going to have to beat. Marsh said that the win meant the most to his seniors, who have watched the Trojans recent dominance of Class C. We haven t ever come close to beating them, Marsh said. The seniors did not want to go out without a win against Southwestern. Salamanca led 6-3 at the half but forced three turnovers in the second half to take control of the game. A key contributor to the Warriors fortunes this season has been senior Ben Haas, who was quiet on the stat sheet but his presence was felt. It was not a huge game statistically for him, Marsh said. They were keying on him. Ben is a team player and he knew the things we were doing were working. Photo by Tim Frank Salamanca RB Ben Haas. Haas, who leads the team in rushing with 457 yards and 5 TDs, is also a state champion wrestler. He is a real good team player for us, Marsh said. He is very dedicated and hard working. The loss dropped Portville to 0-4 on the season. Randolph, is clearly one of the top 5 teams in the state, coach Gary Swetland said. We have a young team. We have scored some points, we just have some trouble stopping the run. Portville s first four opponents included the last three sectional champions in class D; Maple Grove, Silver Creek, and Randolph. The first four opponents have to be in the top ten of the state, Swetland said, It s a real tough division. A bright spot this season has been senior quarterback Colt Lowe. Colt and our receivers have kept us alive, Swetland said. Whatever degree we have been in the games they have kept us in. We have to grow up fast in this division. Lowe threw two TD passes in the loss to Randolph last weekend. He passed for over 100 yards and has now passed for 864 yards this fall. He is a quality passing quarterback, Swetland said, and he is improving with his feet all the time. He has ability to throw the ball accurately. He s a pure passer. Forestville was putting a lot of people in the box forcing us to throw the ball, Sherman coach Bob Krenzer said. Offensive Coordinator Ty Harper did a nice job of taking what they gave us. Sophomore quarterback Andrew Graham put on a strong showing, throwing for three touchdowns while adding 90 yards rushing. He s just a young sophomore who s still learning, Krenzer said. He has a relatively accurate arm, but he is also a threat with his legs. He forces teams to defend both. Graham has been steady over the course of the season for the young Sherman team. He has passed for 327 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. Graham has also rushed for 114 yards. We are a very young team, Krenzer said. We only return three starters from last season. We probably have more sophomores starting than juniors and seniors combined, so the team doesn t really look at him as a young guy. Krenzer knows the real challenge for his squad lies ahead in the next several weeks. The important part of the season is coming up, he Photo by Tim Frank Sherman QB Andrew Graham. said. We play Clymer on Saturday, then finish the regular season with Pine Valley, and Chautauqua Lake. Our quarterback has to continue to improve as does the running game. It is kind of funny, St. Mary s coach Dave Hersey said. The same weekend the Bills end their streak against New England, we do the same thing. It took us both seven years. Sophomore tailback Nicc Vallone scored the games first two touchdowns and rushed for 150 yards on the day. We decided to play him just on offense this week, Hersey said. He was the best kid in the league, and we won a championship, he said. He is a great young man and he comes from a good family. Vallone who weighs just 155 pounds, has earned the respect of his older teammates. He practices at a high rate of speed, Hersey said. He is fast and hits like a truck. It means Iʼm old, Pugh said. Itʼs nice to have. Pugh says that the CHSFL has been a competitive league for years. Itʼs tough in this league, he told MSG Varsity. You have a good year, youʼre.500 and you make a run in the playoffs. Photo Submitted Senior QB Yianni Holy Cross Tom Pugh. Gavalas from Holy Cross (3-0, ranked 12th in Class AA by the NYSSWA) went 12-of-16 for 300 yards and three touchdowns, all to Shyheim Wingate, who also had two short rushing scores. And what were Pugh's plans for last night after the milestone victory? Iʼm going to do the stats, go home and have a meatloaf sandwich, he said. Digging Their Graves? Quick, check the laws governing child labor in New York. It sounds like a Section 3 JV football team has been working the graveyard shift. The Marcellus school district is investigating a complaint that JV coach Jim Marsh made players lay down on top of graves in a local cemetery to emphasize a message about not giving up, The Syracuse Post-Standard reported Tuesday. Sources told the paper Marsh asked the roughly two dozen players to lay on the graves for several minutes while he extolled the importance of playing hard, and how those buried underneath them would cherish the opportunity to trade places with the players. The district confirmed Marsh, who also coaches boys varsity basketball and teaches English, stopped the team bus at a cemetery near the school Saturday afternoon after a loss at Skaneateles, district spokesman Craig Tice said. District officials met with parents Monday night; assistant superintendent Patricia McCarron ordered a Post-Standard reporter to leave the school campus following the meeting. 19 Friday Night Lights Fri., 9/2 Kickoff Special 7:00 pm Depew 7:30 pm Fri., 9/9 Wmsv North Tonawanda 7:00 pm Fri., 9/16 Lake Wmsv South 7:00 pm Sat., 9/24 Sweet Home 2:00 pm Sat., 10/1 Orchard Park 12:00 pm Fri., 10/7 Orchard Lancaster 7:30 pm Sat., 10/15 Grand Island 2:00 pm PLAYOFF Schedule TBA 2011 Be sure to LISTEN Saturday Morning from 10 to 11!! 22 CoverStory The Land of Cotton By Mark Adair In one of the most anticipated games of the season, defending Class B champion Alden will travel to Depew to play the undefeated Wildcats this weekend. Depew beat East High last week to improve to 4-0. Weʼve still got a long way to go to be a 4-0 team, Depew coach Dan McGrath said. Weʼve got a lot of work to do. Weʼve got things we need to correct and things we need to get better at. We need to improve this week to be better next week and we need to do that every week. Despite his search for improvement, McGrath is pleased with his roster. Weʼve got a little bit of depth at a number of positions, he said. We are least 4-deep at running back. Weʼve got a couple of fullbacks and and a couple of quarterbacks. We donʼt have 40 kids in uniform. We have 40 kids that can play. Along with improved depth, the Wildcats are - once again - absolutely huge along the offensive and defensive lines. And, for the second year in a row, the Wildcats have a Division I-A scholarship player on the offensive line. Two-way tackle Jaden Cotton is an imposing sight. The senior stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 331 pounds. He has already given a verbal commitment to play at the University at Buffalo after high school. I really liked UB, Cotton said earlier this summer. I liked the coaching staff. I wanted to play there and I wanted to go to school there. I really didnʼt want to wait Justin Patt Depew tackle Jaden Cotton has helped the Wildcats to a 4-0 start this season. Cotton is 6-6 and 331 pounds and will play at UB in Photo by Mark Adair so I committed early. Cotton says he is looking forward to playing at UB, but he doesnʼt think about it very often. Iʼm very excited to be going there, he said. But Iʼm more focused on this season and trying to go far this year. Cotton is just the latest in a long line of big (i.e. enormous) linemen that have played for McGrath. Last year, John Kling (6-7, 295) anchored the line and is now on the roster at UB. Depew graduate Adam Rosner ( ) just graduated from Syracuse University after a 5-year career for the Orange. Weʼve been really fortunate that our parents continue to feed our kids well, McGrath joked. And we certainly hope it continues. The most shocking thing about Cottonʼs size is still just 16 years old. Heʼs still just a boy, McGrath said. He started school early and heʼs been with us on the varsity since he was a 14-year old sophomore. Cotton was actually on McGrathʼs radar long before the playerʼs sophomore year, however. We saw him coming up as a middle school student, McGrath said. He was already 6-4 and 220 in middle school when he played modified football. Cotton says he size was always impressive. Iʼve always been one of the biggest kids in my class, he said. Ever since kindergarten. I had an uncle who played football at Fordham and another was a bas- See Cover Story on page 21

23 CoverStory continued from page 20 ketball player at UNC Ashville. So size runs in my family. By the time Cotton was 14, it was apparent that he was big enough to play on the varsity at Depew. We brought him up as a tight end, Mcgrath said, but, as he continued to grow, we moved him to the interior line. McGrath says that whenever a young player makes a push for a spot on the varsity, he and his coaching staff do a thorough investigation before the player is actually called up to the varsity. We go through a process, McGrath said. We work with the parents. We also watch with the kid in spring camps and summer workouts. We need to see if this kid belongs socially with the older group of kids. We need to see that the kid will fit in before we determine whether or not we keep him with the varsity program. McGrath also leans on his seniors for help. We expect our seniors to look out for our underclassmen, he said, in the locker room, in the hallway, in the cafeteria and at social events. They need to watch out for these younger kids and we make sure they understand that. And Cotton is far more than just a big kid. McGrath says that Cotton - while not exactly a speed demon - is athletic. Heʼs not fast, McGrath said, but heʼs fast enough. He has decent feet. He plays center on the basketball team, so heʼs a pretty good athlete. He anticipates things very well, so he can get to where he needs to be ahead of time. Cotton plays basketball simply because he enjoys it. I used to play baseball, too, he said. I play basketball to stay in shape and have fun. It keeps me focused through the winter. I just like to get out there and play. Cotton is also is on the Honor Roll at Depew and maintains an academic average of 91. Iʼve thought about majoring in business but Iʼm leaning towards Medicine, he said. I like to help people. Iʼd love to be in Physical Therapy so I could be around sports. McGrath says that Cotton is the leader of a group of linemen that are inseparable Itʼs a tight group, McGrath said. They like to eat, they like to talk and they know when to turn the switch and play football. They all help each other in the weight room. They all lift together and each lineman is as intense as the next one. They compete against each other and push each other. Cotton says that he is determined to help the Wildcats go farther in the playoffs than they did in Last fall, Depew finished the regular season 7-0 but lost to Lackawanna in the first round of the playoffs. That was tough to go out the way we did last year, he said. That loss is always in the back of my mind. We have really high hopes this year. We just need to play our hearts out and see where it takes us. TRAINING THE HEART OF A CHAMPION FROM THE INSIDE OUT The Heart of a Champion Character Playbook theme is FINISH STRONG! IT ʻS NOT HOW YOU START THE SEASON, THE GAME OR LIFE.BUT HOW YOU FINISH!! This weekʼs FINISH STRONG WORD IS Servant. Intensity: is honoring and sacrificing for others while expecting nothing in return. (Those who humble themselves will be exalted or lifted up; those who exalt themselves will be humbled.) Athletes and Coaches: to FINISH STRONG you have to believe that you do not come to the team to be served but to serve and give your abilities to the team. Hall of Famer, Steve Young said he understood that it was his job to get the ball to the other guys to make them look good. Your ability to humble yourself and esteem others will draw people, on the field and in life, like a magnet. Loving your teammates deeply from the heart is demonstrated through deflecting praise to those around you and protecting those whose weaknesses arise in the course of the game or season. Martin Luther King said, Everybody can be great because anyone can serve. You do not have to have a college degree to serve. The cost of regret far exceeds the price of discipline So fight the good fight, finish the race, and keep the faith! Be intense and FINISH STRONG! 53 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?
